Special What can and (definetly can't) be posted on the sub :)

Users have been asking and complaining about the "vagueness" of the topics that are or aren't allowed in the subreddit, and some requesting for a clarification.

So the mod team will attempt to delineate some thread topics and what is and isn't allowed.

Backstory:

CharacterRant has its origins in the Battleboarding community WhoWouldWin (r/whowouldwin), created to accommodate threads that went beyond a simple hypothetical X vs. Y battle. Per our (very old) sub description:

This is a sub inspired by r/whowouldwin. There have been countless meta posts complaining about characters or explanations as to why X beats, and so on. So the purpose of this sub is to allow those who want to rant about a character or explain why X beats Y and so on.

However, as early as 2015, we were already getting threads ranting about the quality of specific series, complaining about characterization, and just general shittery not all that related to "who would win: 10 million bees vs 1 lion".

So, per Post Rules 1 in the sidebar:

Thread Topics: You may talk about why you like or dislike a specific character, why you think a specific character is overestimated or underestimated. You may talk about and clear up any misconceptions you've seen about a specific character. You may talk about a fictional event that has happened, or a concept such as ki, chakra, or speedforce.

Well that's certainly kinda vague isn't it?

So what can and can't be posted in CharacterRant?

Allowed:

  • Battleboarding in general (with two exceptions down below)
  • Explanations, rants, and complaints on, and about: characters, characterization, character development, a character's feats, plot points, fictional concepts, fictional events, tropes, inaccuracies in fiction, and the power scaling of a series.
  • Non-fiction content is fine as long as it's somehow relevant to the elements above, such as: analysis and explanations on wars, history and/or geopolitics; complaints on the perception of historical events by the general media or the average person; explanation on what nation would win what war or conflict.

Not allowed:

  • he 2 Battleboarding exceptions: 1) hypothetical scenarios, as those belong in r/whowouldwin;2) pure calculations - you can post a "fancalc" on a feat or an event as long as you also bring forth a bare minimum amount of discussion accompanying it; no "I calced this feat at 10 trillion gigajoules, thanks bye" posts.
  • Explanations, rants and complaints on the technical aspect of production of content - e.g. complaints on how a movie literally looks too dark; the CGI on a TV show looks unfinished; a manga has too many lines; a book uses shitty quality paper; a comic book uses an incomprehensible font; a song has good guitars.
  • Politics that somehow don't relate to the elements listed in the "Allowed" section - e.g. this country's policies are bad, this government is good, this politician is dumb.
  • Entertainment topics that somehow don't relate to the elements listed in the "Allowed" section - e.g. this celebrity has bad opinions, this actor is a good/bad actor, this actor got cast for this movie, this writer has dumb takes on Twitter, social media is bad.

ADDENDUM -

  • Politics in relation to a series and discussion of those politics is fine, however political discussion outside said series or how it relates to said series is a no, no baggins'
  • Overly broad takes on tropes and and genres? Henceforth not allowed. If you are to discuss the genre or trope you MUST have specifics for your rant to be focused on. (Specific Characters or specific stories)
  • Rants about Fandom or fans in general? Also being sent to the shadow realm, you are not discussing characters or anything relevant once more to the purpose of this sub
  • A friendly reminder that this sub is for rants about characters and series, things that have specificity to them and not broad and vague annoyances that you thought up in the shower.

And our already established rules:

  • No low effort threads.
  • No threads in response to topics from other threads, and avoid posting threads on currently over-posted topics - e.g. saw 2 rants about the same subject in the last 24 hours, avoid posting one more.
  • No threads solely to ask questions.
  • No unapproved meta posts. Ask mods first and we'll likely say yes.

PS: We can't ban people or remove comments for being inoffensively dumb. Stop reporting opinions or people you disagree with as "dumb" or "misinformation".

Why was my thread removed? What counts as a Low Effort Thread?

  • If you posted something and it was removed, these are the two most likely options:**
  • Your account is too new or inactive to bypass our filters
  • Your post was low effort

"Low effort" is somewhat subjective, but you know it when you see it. Only a few sentences in the body, simply linking a picture/article/video, the post is just some stupid joke, etc. They aren't all that bad, and that's where it gets blurry. Maybe we felt your post was just a bit too short, or it didn't really "say" anything. If that's the case and you wish to argue your position, message us and we might change our minds and approve your post.

What counts as a Response thread or an over-posted topic? Why do we get megathreads?

  1. A response thread is pretty self explanatory. Does your thread only exist because someone else made a thread or a comment you want to respond to? Does your thread explicitly link to another thread, or say "there was this recent rant that said X"? These are response threads. Now obviously the Mod Team isn't saying that no one can ever talk about any other thread that's been posted here, just use common sense and give it a few days.
  2. Sometimes there are so many threads being posted here about the same subject that the Mod Team reserves the right to temporarily restrict said topic or a portion of it. This usually happens after a large series ends, or controversial material comes out (i.e The AOT ban after the penultimate chapter, or the Dragon Ball ban after years of bullshittery on every DB thread). Before any temporary ban happens, there will always be a Megathread on the subject explaining why it has been temporarily kiboshed and for roughly how long. Obviously there can be no threads posted outside the Megathread when a restriction is in place, and the Megathread stays open for discussions.

Reposts

  • A "repost" is when you make a thread with the same opinion, covering the exact same topic, of another rant that has been posted here by anyone, including yourself.
  • ✅ It's allowed when the original post has less than 100 upvotes or has been archived (it's 6 months or older)
  • ❌ It's not allowed when the original post has more than 100 upvotes and hasn't been archived yet (posted less than 6 months ago)

Music

Users have been asking about it so we made it official.

To avoid us becoming a subreddit to discuss new songs and albums, which there are plenty of, we limit ourselves regarding music:

  • Allowed: analyzing the storytelling aspect of the song/album, a character from the music, or the album's fictional themes and events.
  • Not allowed: analyzing the technical and sonical aspects of the song/album and/or the quality of the lyricism, of the singing or of the sound/production/instrumentals.

TL;DR: you can post a lot of stuff but try posting good rants please

-Yours truly, the beautiful mod team

Riri Williams failed because she is a poor attempt of suceeding Tony, she has the same bad qualities but neither of the good ones that made Tony great

Riri seems to be selfish and egoistic same as how Tony was, both have huge ego. However, the main difference is that Tony have things that Riri lacks which makes him much more likeable

To begin with, Tony has a lots of charisma, yes he has ego but he is also someone extremely likeable, there are many people who watch Iron Man just because Tony was in it. This is due RDJ just oozing charism and having a presence that Dominique simply lacks, not saying she is bad but she just doesn't bring the same presence to the screen.

And second Tony is a hero, one of the reason people love Tony is because despite his ego he is willing to sacrifice everything to save everyone. We have seen it multiple times in Avengers, he went through a wormhole which was almost guaranteed everyone to save New York, then he was basically obssesed with saving everyone from an upcoming threat and then he sacrificed everything to take down Thanos and save the Universe. Riri just doesn't have that heroic qualities in her, she is more like a villian as everything she does is for herself and we never see heroism in her.

Finally Riri doesn't even have the right to act that arrogant, Tony is a once a generation genius that even villains respected, he has earned the right to be arrogant. Riri never had the legacy that Tony built so to me her acting so arrogant and full or herself makes her very unlikeable especially compared to Tony

Basically Riri willaims is if we took everything that made Tony's great such as his achiements, his charisma and his heroism, that's why I think Riri willaims didn't work because he is basically Tony without good qualities

Another thing is that Ironheart directly disrespected Tony's legacy making it seem like he only did it because of his billlions ignoring his genius, charisma or heroism. Like, one of the points of the MCU is that the suit doesn't make the hero, both Steve and Tony proved that even without special powers they were unique on their own so for someone to come and downplay Tony as someone who did it because of his money makes her very unlikeable. And to me this is golden rule in writing, if you want to suceed a beloved character you can have him downplay a legendary character, a lot of people are gonna hate them for it even if they have a valid point, you just don't do that.

Films & TV If the mcu wants me to hate john walker they should actually make him more than just the baseline mcu Asshole

Just rewatched Thunderbolts the other day great movie, one issue though…it just reminded that we’re “supposed” to see John Walker in a darker light than a standard MCU comedic asshole.

I’ll admit, everyone got their jabs in this movie, but for some reason at according to the character responses, we’re supposed to take Johns more seriously…

It will never not enrage me hearing Yelena “you killed an innocent man in the street” like I’m sorry where? Is the innocent man in the room with us? The literal terrorist? Who ran around with a terrorist gang? And planned to blow people up? Like terrorist? The same people who killed John walkers partner? That “innocent” man? Sure okay…

What comes before is laughable…When Bob touched John and showed his “darkest” moment on screen…we’re supposed to believe this man is a shitty father because he scrolling the internet and not holding his baby who get this…right next to him…totally fine...I might need to rewatch that scene but I don’t even think the baby started crying until the mother came in and started an argument.

We’re supposed to hate John as a father and husband for that moment when in the same movie mind you…we see Bob’s father an actual abusive asshole put his hands on his child & wife..now that guy I hate…

Its been a while since I have watch Falcon and Winter solider, but from the moment john was introduced it seemed like we were supposed to hate this man like hitler, when honestly I can’t even remember even genuine things to hate about him or shitty things he’s done.

Anime & Manga The Bleach TYBW anime has written itself into a corner with Yhwach

And that corner is, Ichigo should be dead by the end of the last episode.

Unlike the manga, where Yhwach does toy with Ichigo, breaks Renji's Shikai but otherwise leaves him unharmed and emotionally damaged, Yhwach in the anime has demonstrated no such charity. He is brutally and efficiently finishing everyone off from what we've seen, and killed Orihime and Ichigo off several times with no regard for Ichigo, forcing Orihime to revive him.

What follows that differs from the manga is Yhwach then brutally killing all of Ichigo's friends. Or at least, killing enough to satisfy English law. Should they survive, that's another matter, but it wouldn't be because Yhwach spared them.

Following from that, with the way everything is set up and following off the character beats we've spent the last 42 minutes of the anime establishing... Yhwach lifts his sword high on the air, and presumably chops off Ichigo and Orihime's heads and ends the series while Gerard kills the rest of the Gotei who cannot defeat him.

The final four episodes will now be set in Yhwach's new world.

Anything else is incoherent from what we've been shown. Yhwach changing his mind and sparing Ichigo? He chopped his head off. Why would he not do it again? Leaving Orihime alive? He impaled her five times. What's a sixth?

Unfortunately, we know Yhwach fights Aizen down in the soul society, and we know Ichigo must deliver the big choppa at the end of the series. And somehow, Uryu must be involved. And I am finding it very hard, based on what has been currently established, to believe that Ichigo's lifespan is not measured In seconds at this point.

Bold change. Let's see how they pull off this no doubt big rewrite.

General Flim and Flam from My Little Pony are fucking STUPID

For those who don't know - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a show about talking ponies. These ponies have a mark on their hips - cutie marks - that show their talent, though they don't necessarily make that their job.

One of the six main characters is Applejack, who is part of the Apple family - a family of ponies that have a gigantic farm near the main location of the show, Ponyville. They're seemingly the main food supplier of the town (definitely when it comes to apples and 99% of apple-related products), they've been there since the literal founding of it, they're famous and beloved, they have huge tracts of land where they grow their apples, and so on. They also host a yearly celebration where they sell Apple Cider, which is so popular that a line consisting of basically every single citizen forms as soon as it starts, with them genuinely not able to make enough cider for everyone due to the sheer workload it'd take.

In the episode we first see this cider selling celebration, a duo of brothers shows up that tries to butt into their business - Flim and Flam.

And their plan sucks. And they suck. And the only reason they're not poor or in a dungeon forever is because Equestria's citizens are stupid when they're in a group and because the laws are pretty lax when it comes to small time crooks.

Because the first thing they do is roll into town on The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000, telling the citizens that they can make more cider than the Apples and asking the Apples for cooperation - with a 75-25 split.

The Apples, obviously, refuse. To which Flim and Flam say "Alright, we'll just drive you out of business then, get bent". They come back the next day and ragebait the Apples into a competition - their Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 against the Apples' manual labor, whoever makes the most barrels of cider wins, the loser doesn't get to sell it anymore.

The Apples agree and start losing, because the machine genuinely is just that good and fast at making cider. So their friends, the rest of the Mane Six, come in to help them. Flim and Flam are okay with this because they're cocky, but their machine starts to fall behind, resulting in them disabling quality control and sucking up not only apples but rocks and whole-ass trees.

They win quantity-wise, but their cider is such pure unfiltered ass that no one wants to drink it, resulting in them leaving on their machine.

Every single time we see them after this, they attempt to do some sort of scam. First they try and sell a snake oil miracle tonic to old and crippled ponies, telling them it'll cure everything, including old age. Then they sell tickets in pony Las Vegas, eventually taking over the entire (very profitable) resort. Then they start a scamming friendship university that uses Scientology-esque "You have to pay to level up" schemes. Then they start selling cheap and broken holiday dolls while pretending that they're the hottest shit ever. And this is just the main show - they do even more in the comics and the alternate human timeline.

All of these fail with varying levels of success, from "We have to refund literally everything" to "We sold our stock but were chased out of town". This is a constant thing with them. They are only ever foiled by the Mane Six after screwing over the masses.

But the thing is, they could have just used that first machine perfectly fine.

Their cutie marks are apples. They are talented at farming/using apples. People genuinely liked the cider they made, and only got angry at them because they were trying to upstage one of the most beloved families in town and because they shut off their quality control for quantity.

If they fucked off to somewhere where there wasn't an established Apple family and just sold their cider there, they would've made metric fucktons of money. Hell, they could have kept up with the quantity perfectly fine by just making another machine. We even see in the comics that they can make different drinks with different fruits, like lemonade.

But instead of focusing on that, they decide "Oh hey, let's absolutely fucking annihilate our reputation by starting to scam people". They could have genuinely just started up the fruit drink equivalent of the industrial revolution with their machine, arguably making more money in both the long and short term, but they're just scamming people for the love of the game.

Even when they eventually become managers of Las Pegasus - an absolute goldmine of money - they don't use the money from the resort to expand it. Instead, they start at least two separate scams to fund these expansions, both of which fail spectacularly.

They never had to scam anypony. Like ever. They could have just gone somewhere else where there wasn't a famous Apple-related family that's literally saved the town/country/world, offered a fair split instead of a shitty one or imported the fruit, and made tons and tons and tons of money via drinks there. Fuckin' Manehatten is right there, they could have easily made bank over there.

We even see an alternate timeline where the main characters never got together as a group to stop villains, where they've become such gigantic business moguls that they're littering the landscape with factories and tearing up every single tree for profit, seemingly beating/outlasting any and all other villains of the show via sheer corporate greed.

Also Rainbow Dash is an alcoholic. Genuinely eats spilled Apple Cider out of the dirt because she couldn't get any.

TL;DR: Flim and Flam could have made an insane business with their cider machine but instead decided to become reoccurring villains by constantly scamming ponies out of their bits, leading to them being both hated and not as rich as they could be. Also ponies love alcohol.

General Gonna say it right now, so many people will claim the dumbest and more outrageous things if the villain(or any major character)is Hot or at least somewhat attractive.

I sometimes question how Gooner brained people are to where they claim some of the stupidest takes if the character's even somewhat attractive and really makes me feel like if they were being manipulated by any evil women, she wouldn't even need to do much, all she has to do is just give any gooner or schmuck the smallest bit of attention and boom, done.

I think it's cause that a lot of people project heavily and I mean HEAVILY onto these characters and to see them not act the way they specifically would is what they consider a fumble and I strongly implore people to put their dicks away for one minute and think with their main head as opposed to their "other head" and all that cause what are we doing here?

No genuinely.

If any character doesn't like a beautiful woman or accept their love confession immediately, that's a fumble.

If a character doesn't let a hot woman do whatever they want to them and let them do evil shit to them, that's a fumble or them "selling the bag".

I could keep going but way too many people think with their dicks as opposed to their brains.

Firstly, I'll see people constantly claim that they wish he was Mark[Invincible]when he is literally being raped by Anissa and gonna be so honest, this is why a lot of people don't take Male Sexual Assault seriously when y'sll are saying this shit and I guarantee you the only reason they're saying this is cause Anissa is hot.

I also see a lot of people claim that Spider-Man/Peter fumbled Felica and..if you want me to be so deadass,I would argue that she fumbles him but cause she's a Woman,a lot of people will seldom to never bring it up and place all the blame on Peter and that's 90% cause she's a hot woman with a skin tight bodysuit and a cat themed demeanor..if she was ugly,I genuinely don't think people would claim he fumbled her.

I also see people claim that Saitama fumbled Tatsumaki and Fubuki and I just wanna know how..he doesn't romantically like them.

Not romantically liking someone isn't a "fumble",you can't force romantic love.

I would argue he barely sees them as close friends, so how is he "fumbling?"

Same goes for Jimmy and Giganta in My Adventures with Superman.

Y'all only claimed that he was "fumbling" and "needed to pass the controller" cause she was a hot woman..that's literally it and I know y'all would gladly let her do anything she wants to you including drugging and experimenting on you and capturing you when you don't romantically like them back but some people actually have self respect.

I know we can talk about Kara and Jimmy and how he "fumbled" her but I chalk that up to bad writing at times and I guarantee you Kara wouldn't get half the defense and white knighting she does rn if she wasn't some overly cute golden retriever woman who is perfect and innocent and whatnot..like if she was actually a flawed and self destructive or even messy character, people would be a lot more apprehensive.

I genuinely don't get why so many people are so damn gullible with attractive characters and will go to war for them.

General I have a important question and discussion..is it possible to make a character Too Likable in a bad way?

I've seen a lot of people be upset when a character is too unlikable or flawed or whatnot in a lot of regards but I'm actually curious if it's possible to make a character too likable and I feel like..it definitely is cause when you basically give a character no flaws or trials or struggles for them to overcome as a character and basically make all the characters glaze them to no end, then you(as a writer)are trying too hard to make a character come off as likable and cool.

I'm not saying characters need whole speeches and discussions on how much they suck as people but I feel like it's more annoying when a character's flaws are either treated as jokes/things to laugh about or they just flat out don't make them flawed at all and just portray them as overly nice and trusting and caring and whatnot and here's the thing..you can definitely make "too trusting" or "too nice/caring" interesting character flaws.

If a character is too trusting, that could lead to them being gullible and easily manipulated by others and they would have to learn common sense.

If a character is too nice or sweet, that could lead to them being hesitant to fight back or do what needs to be done and they can be good-hearted and not sacrifice their morals while doing what needs to be done, that's another thing and it isn't impossible to make things that would be non-flaws actual flaws but a lot of writers fail to make that point, especially live action remakes.

Disney remakes have a really bad habit of sucking out the charm and flaws and just overall anything that made characters like Mulan so..enjoyable and well written in the first place.

Seriously, I would argue its more sexist or has more poor writing to remove a character's flaws instead of developing them from it.

But it's one thing to remove a character's flaws, it's another thing to barely acknowledge them at all or not acknowledge them at all and basically have characters glaze them in spite on it and basically dickride so hard that they're gonna get pregnant.

Oden from One Piece is a character that I feel like fits that example cause he is monstrously glazed.

Seriously I don't think I've ever seen a arc where a character is Getting this cocksucked and its not even like he did anything to warrant it cause Oden fucking SUCKS.

Like what is this bullshit about going to the red lights district at like 7 and having a harem of grown woman at 15 and starting a harem war and even had Whitebeard and Roger fighting over him,etc..I could keeping going but this guy basically fucked off from his country to play Pirate despite it being his job and then when he got back, shit was bad and instead of ASKING for help from his allies and friends who would probably gladly help, he decided to strip down and dance like a Buffoon and if you really think about it,basically almost all of Wano's disasters were his fault and he basically accomplished nothing outside of having a scabbard of dickriders and basically had his son sacrifice his childhood to become a adult just to become the leader and clean up his Dad's mess..he's kind of a piece of shit if you think about it but Oda glazes him to no end.

And nothing is more annoying than a character who SHOULD be more flawed then they actually are and that leads us into Kara from My Adventures with Superman.

I don't hate or dislike her but I feel like the writers made her way too perfect and likable by basically showing her as this overly sweet golden retriever character when i feel like she should be more flawed then she actually is..and it gets annoying when there's real potential with her with dissecting and showing the trauma she suffered at Brainiac's hands and there's real potential in how inexperienced she is with the world and people in General but that's just not exploited or explored enough and that's kind of..a problem since she basically feels like wasted potential and considering the series doesn't even know if a S4 is coming or not, how they ender her and Jimmy's relationship feels like a slap in the face and a huge waste of time.

So it is possible to make a character too likable by basically not giving them flaws or struggles at all.

Films & TV characters that are scumbags and why they are.

Upvotes
  1. Grace Chastity (Dirty Prudes Must Die).

She is insufferably arrogant. It's not even her being religious, it's that she uses it to sh*t on others. She literally plotted revenge on the villain, Max Jagerman, cuz she was sexually attracted to him. He could NOT control that, as much as he wanted it to happen. She even said one of the people he murdered was probably in hell cuz she was bisexual! The only major excuse you could give her is that she was raised in an EXTREMELY religious household, and probably not given the freedom to explore and stuff... that's still not even as sad as the WORST character on this list!

  1. Lila Rossi/Cerise Bianca (Miraculous Ladybug).

Out of the three character in this list, she is the MOST inexcusable from all that's known about her! She just manipulates to just get straight up WHATEVER she wants to have or keep at the moment. From the beginning, she was awful. She made Marinette, the main protagonist, look like a bully by making it look like she attacked her. She lied to and manipulated Adrien, the secondary main protagonist, to get close to him. She even found a way to get to Hawk Moth, the actual VILLAIN of the majority of the show! I don't even think it's been shown WHY she does all this!!

  1. Dale Dimmadome (Fairly Oddparents: A New Wish)

This actually seems like the most random and odd choice, but it really makes sense when you really look CLOSELY at his actions! First off, He gives zero cares about his own son, Dev who is also a jerk a bunch of times, which is obviously cuz he wasn't raised...like AT ALL, his primary caretakers are drones! Dale cares ONLY about business, When the main character, Hazel, who is a child by the way, was using wishes to make people happy at the event Dale was using to make money, it basically made him lose money. What did he do after learning she was connected to making people happy? He was busy making a PLAN called "Project H" which was basically him trying to figure out how she was doing it. This made Dev even more angry about not being loved, and so he eventually became KING OF THE WORLD! When Dale found out, he was more interested in using this for business, not considering the ethics or why his son was doing this, he just wanted MONEY!! He is the worst piece of sh*t on this list!! Now, the ONE thing that makes me like his writing is that he was a very poor kid that spent a long time basically being used for CHILD LABOR, and I guess when he suddenly got his wealth...it all made him realize money meant everything!! It went to his head, and now he's an absolutely selfish man! Is it a common theme for villains? Yes. Is it true? Definitely, and Dale is a truly wonderful picture at what happens when you get rich without learning to have a heart to keep greed in check!

So, that's it! There are way more character for me to hate, but these are the ones that I find to be the scummiest, all in their own way. I'm surprised I only have one "bad parent" character in here!

General I absolutely HATE how common bad endings are for horror games.

Im just so curious why writers have to JUST write bad endings for characters or stories, its so boring to me. Its like they dont even have any writing skill cause after all that baggage and stuff you make that person go through you go ahead and give them the most bland white girl starbucks vanilla bean frappucino Walmart Brainfart ending so you can call it realism or its 'it MakEs sense!' And sometimes these people force plot twists out there ass so it can look deep when in reality ITS AS DEEP as my PIMPLES

I REALLY HATE. HATEE how a majority of the horror games I play: Outlast,Manhunt, Cry of Fear, Fear and Hunger, Until dawn and etc always seem to have bad endings.

I dont know why but these developers or just the game in generals piss me off, oh sure throw me the same aesthetic again and again and expect me to like it. The only reason you scare me is cause you catch me off guard. It feels soulless every game of that feels the same and never felt original to me i HATE these type of endings. I hate it so much, the need for realism so your story can just fit the themes better and we have to ask others for the real lesson and quote on quote 'ReAl mEaNInG' or 'what were they supposed to do?' Mf, they were doing insane shit before your telling me your reverting it back to realism cause you want to make a message??

Im SO done with these games and iam so DONE fighting these people who keep telling me the same thing.....

Games Danganronpa 2×2 is the only thing that I'm both excited and insanely worried about. Spoiler

Danganronpa, a unique visual novel mystery game hybrid that has a fanbase so insane it's comparable to My hero academia and gachiakuta fanbase, but unlike them, danganronpa games are crazier than the fanbase. Now moving all from that,I have some issues with the new remake that I haven't seen being discussed much in the community and I have to explain it.

Spoilers ahead for danganronpa 2

1)The game felt completed:

Danganronpa 2 for me felt like it ended in a perfect note. Sure there were some problems that could have been better or some opportunities were missed, but it felt like a completed work that didn't need a sequel to explain anything else. Now we have a new remake that will also add another new timeline with new killers, victims and survivors and it will get a new ending and this worries me.

The biggest issue with the new timeline is that we already know what happened in the original danganronpa 2,so the new route has way less to offer and some of the new motives may suck.

2) the motive problems:

Danganronpa 2 while its my favorite of the franchise, there are some parts of it that didn't age well compared to the other games and that's motivation. We had amazing and creative motives like murder syndrome and Nagito's chapter, but we also had some bad ones like despair disease (basically brainwashing) and starvation to reduce the number of survivors and that's a problem because the cast was not willing to kill other people and the story forced them to do it and with the remake,we will get 5 new motives at least and they may be even weaker because they might be forced or they could be repeated motives again and that's a huge issue and I don't know how the new game could fix that.

And speaking of Nagito:

3)Danganronpa and Nagito:

Nagito is one of the most known characters of the franchise to the point he is shipped with other characters from other franchises and this says something. He is as vital to danganronpa 2 as Monokuma(the master mind) and the more I think about him,the worse it gets because his character arc from the start to finish felt perfect t here is not a single complaint I have from him. For the remake I am way more worried about his case because every outcome of him is risky. If he dies first or in the middle, then in would be disappointing because he carries the entire game. If he dies in chapter 5 or 6 like the og,it would be seen as a repeat of his original case so that would be aslo bad and the least disappointing option for him is basically surviving because the other options are not good at all.

4)Chiaki problem:

This is the same issue as Nagito, but in a more limiting scale because we know what she was and what she did so her existence may be useless in the remake and she has the potential to be the first victim just for the writers to immediately get rid of her.

But at the same time Im still invested in the remake and I think the writers found a way to fix some of these issues by showing a new female character in the Chinese poster because they themselves realized how limiting their situation is and they added new elements to fix those issues, but im still nervous. What are your thoughts of the remake?

Comics & Literature Genuine question and discussion, why is Batman the only hero who has the reputation of "acting extraordinary violent and over the top towards common thugs and people doing petty crimes?"

Something I've noticed is that there is a massive double standard against Batman in a lot of regards and this one is it.

And do not give me the bullshit excuse "it's cause he's popular" cause nearly every other hero i mention is extremely popular as well but something I've noticed is that a hugely common joke or meme or discussion is that Batman will go out of his way to act extremely violent and insane towards people doing small things like Jaywalking, parking tickets, etc but acts gentle towards his enemies(which..isn't true)and I'll see people use the Arkham Games as examples but even that doesn't work cause wasn't he beating the literal shit out of Joker and throwing him around and all that?

Did he not literally grab the Penguin and throw him against the wall and shatter it and slam him around?

Did he not also break his hand as well first?

Like I could keep going but that's just the gameplay where he's kicking thugs Asses,it's again..gameplay.

Hell,a lot of continuties and more show him just knocking them down or out with one punch and even leaving them alone if he backs up.

I feel like takes like that are almost as stupid as "Batman is just beating up the mentally ill and should be working as Bruce Wayne" or "Red Hood is a more competent/Better Batman then him."

But my thing is..why isn't Spider-Man labeled the same way when he webs someone up and SLAMS THEM TO THE GROUND or kicks them into a truck or throws them off buildings via insomniac or even in different movies?

Why isn't Daredevil or Superman gave those same reputations, especially Daredevil who..I would argue is worse in that regard.

Like, all of these heroes are pretty popular and I just think it's silly how there's a severe double standard regarding him in a lot of regards.

Theorizer Tunnel Vision (MCU/DCU/Lanterns)

This is my term for when a certain type of theory takes over a fan community with little to no evidence, and now it’s all anyone talks about. I’m using comic book adaptation examples because thats the main place I’ve seen it happen, but I’m sure it occurs with other ongoing stories.

I find this phenomenon really annoying because it becomes borderline impossible to have a conversation about says property without someone inserting by theory, often getting angry if you say you aren’t convinced or simply don’t think it’s an interesting theory. And then if the show doesn’t “live up” to theory, people act like they were cheated or misled.

In the vast majority of cases, this is about the appearance of a particular character or concept. During WandaVision, a huge chunk of the audience became convinced thd plot was the work of Mephisto. Even content creators like New Rockstars played into it, finding “evidence“ for his involvement via Easter eggs (allegedly). This is despite the fact that Wanda and Vision have few connections to the character in source material and he was not built up to in the actual plot in any way. Naturally he did not appear and fans who had built up the concept in their head were disappointed.

History repeated with Peacemaker season 2, where a random tweet by Gunn caused numerous fans to be certain a major hero would show up in the last episode. Theorizes ranged from Blue Beetle to Superman to GI Robot, to other characters not yet introduced in the DCU. But the final episode came snd went, no superheroes appeared in the show who weren’t members of the season’s main cast, and fans fixated on this belief were furious.

Currently the same thing is happening again with both Lanterns and Man of Tomorrow. With Lanterns, any possible yellow shade or change from the comics is considered evidence of Paralax. A yellow light came on? Paralax. Hal Jordan is testier than in the comics? Paralax. The rings ask “Are you afraid?” Paralax. It can’t be that yellow is part of the normal color spectrum and is included for its contrast with other colors, or that the writers have changed some elements of the Lantern Mythos for the story they want to tell like they do for every character, it has to be in response to the cosmic fear bug. Not all of these theories are bad and I can’t yet say if he is or isn’t involved, but it has become so ubiquitiois in the fandom most of these theories as compelling as the old “What if the character is in a coma?” theories. They also will shoot down any other possibilities, including ones that don’t contradict Paralax, in part for not including him. It is annoying and monotonous.

Man of Tomorrow is more like tje Peacemaker example. With all the heroes cameos confirmed for the movie, people are deadset that another, secret cameo is being withheld. The main guess is Wonder Woman. Now there is an actress for the movie whose role has not been revealed and she acts like she will be a big deal. It’s possible she is Wondie, but it’s just as if not more possible that she will be Maxima as a news outlet reported sometime ago. The real problem isn’t if these theorize are wrong or right, it’s that if they are wrong many will act aggrieved about her non-inclusion just like they did with Peacemaker season 2.

Some fans take it even further believing MoT will be an event feel that founds the Justice League in the DCU. Again, I can’t definitively say they are wrong, but it has repeatedly been described as a Lex/Superman movie. Being an event where tons of characters get a high degree of focus is something separate than what was promised. and again, the real problem here is that anything less than a stealth Justice League will have many fans labeling this property a disappointment because of a story they made up in their heads.

It is very annoying to see a single, unsupported theory sweep a fandom like a wildfire, especially when the end result is so often mass disappointment. And they never seem to learn.

Comics & Literature The Struggle of Loving A Character's Vibes, but Then You See What They Did

Now, this isn't about people liking villains or jerks as characters - we all know some villains are cool enough as bad guys that you can love them, doesn't mean you think they're good or justified. Everyone has at least one of those.

It's about those very frustrating characters where you love the premise, probably love the looks, but they have in canon screwed up so horribly that you can't like them. Except you can't even like them as villains or you don't want them to be villains.

You need to either pretend something wasn't canon, find some way to justify it - logically or not - or just go wholescale AU.

For me there's Rhaegar Targareyn, A Song of Ice and Fire/GoT.

The guy got most of the vibe stuff - silver haired, violet eyed pretty boy prince who likes music and prophecies and is possibly a little psychic, has a political snakepit of a court to navigate with his father going crazy.

But by his canonical actions, he's at worst a rapist and murderer, and at best an idiot who didn't bother to think how his elopement would affect his actual wife and kids and the realm.

Games Thinking back on one of my favorite game franchises Dishonored I'm glad it confirmed this

"This" being that Corvo killed. I love games with choices of any kind. And I like that in Dishonored 1 and 2 the game would change as well as the ending if you killed a lot or didn't.

But what I love about the sequel is it confirms Corvo did kill at least some people people because I'm sorry true pacifist ending and routes do not make any sense in most games they're present in.

Anime & Manga Biggest issue with Tensei Slime season 4

Or rather the biggest problem with this show since the second half of season 2 is there is zero tension. Not only is Rimuru himself stacked but so are his allies. The moment he got veldora on his team it was wraps. Unless your name is Guy Crimson, no antagonist in this series can fw tempest and Guy himself isn't even an antagonist like clayman and granville.

Speaking of granville, this show is trying so hard to make bro this big threat and it only works because this season handed rimuru and everyone else the idiot ball.

"Hey guys look granville is obvoisly trrying to rage bait me so both leon and myself will pretend to go along with it instead of just jumping the guy and forcing the answer out of him cause we need to stretch this arc out. Oh what's this? Granville got a power up and reverted back to his prime? Do i attack him now? Nah. I'll just stare off into space as he attacks chloe and kills hinata instead of doing fuck all."

I swear I know rimuru was never the brightest or whatever but this season doubled down on making him straight incompetent. And don't get me started on how he does nothing about yuki. Yuki has more plot armor than the mc himself. He should have been killed a billion times for all the shit he's pulled. And this show still trying to make bro out to be like he's aizen or sum shit like lmao.

This bugs me so much because this show tries to build tension but it fails for the reasons I've listed. And I'll get defenses like "it's not a action anime it's a nation building one." Okay but the show still chooses to make these big threats and engage in politics that could threaten tempest but why should I be invested in any of that if it's not done well?

This isn't some slice of life anime like ms koboyashi's dragon maid or a gag series like konosuba, it's actually trying to be serious but in a show where all the heroes are op and can be revived so many times that I might as well be watching dragon ball hard to take it seriously when it tries to be serious.

I have the same problem with overlord and why I dropped it after season 4. And from what I heard about what goes down in slime later I doubt this issue is gonna end.

TLDR: This show's biggest flaw is that it tries to be serious and create tension but falls on it's face every time cause the heroes are too op and need to be made idiots for the villains to look mildly threatening.

Anime & Manga Boa Hancock could be one of One Piece's greatest characters if Oda was actually interested in writing her

If you think about it, Boa Hancock is one of the most tragic and mentally unstable characters in One Piece. She was a child slave owned by her world's equivalent of the guys in the Files and was physically and probably sexually abused for years. Even after being rescued, she spent years being misanthropic and distrustful of everyone in general and men in particular. Despite her self-imposed isolation from her people (or maybe because of it) she developed an obsessive and one-sided crush on a guy she barely knew.

There's so much Oda could have unpacked with this character. How she became the same kind of tyrant to her people as the World Government. How she, a victim of child abuse, fell in "love" with a 17-year old when she was pushing 30. He could have used her to depict the trauma of slavery, had her develop healthy relationships and heal from her trauma, or even made her a villain. Instead, her entire role in the story so far has been fanservice and comedy. I love One Piece, but stuff like this is why it's hard to at times because WE WERE THIS CLOSE TO GREATNESS GODDAMMIT ODA I KNOW YOU CAN WRITE BETTER THAN THIS THINK WITH YOUR BRAIN NOT YOUR EGGPLANT

[Demon Slayer] New evidence of Kanao's link to Douma

Research into the hidden plot is ongoing, and I still sometimes dig up new hints regarding Kanao's hidden plot.

She used to be Upper Moon 2 and Douma's partner, similar Daki and Gyutaro. The Kizuki is a partner system, and this was the model, not the exception; two demons who are linked mentally and physically, "two people in one". There is a mountain of clues pointing at this, but this one is the most literal I've come across yet.

In the Taisho Rumors of her databook (Corps Records) it states the following:

カナエたちに引き取られて暫くは、自分の考えを聞かれるとパニックを起こすこともありました(騒ぐパニックではなく、汗だくになって固まる)。

"For a while after being taken in by Kanae and the others, she would sometimes panic when asked for her own thoughts (not a noisy panic, but freezing up while covered in sweat)."

The phrase used to ask someone what their thoughts / opinions are on some topic is:

どう思いますか? (Dō omoimasu ka?) "What do you think?"

So, when someone asked Kanao what she thought of something, it would be phrased like this:

「カナヲは、どう思いますか?」(Kanao wa, dō omoimasu ka?)

Kanao is DEAF. I show this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DemonSlayerScales/comments/1udq9vo/kanao_is_deaf/

She lives in a world of complete silence. In order to understand what people are saying, she must READ THEIR LIPS.

That means the normal AUDIBLE linguistic cues are NOT PRESENT. It would be VERY DIFFICULT to distinguish between certain sounds in Japanese ESPECIALLY when they are being naturally slurred in casual speech. So from Kanao's perspective, the phrase:

Dō omoimasu

can look almost identical to:

DOUMA

The beginning sound is EXACTLY the same, "Dō". The slight pause preceding the next word would look and sound exactly like the extended vowel pronunciation in "Douma". In casual speech the trailing end of the word will get truncated / blended into "masu". You'll HEAR it, but it would be HARD to SEE it!

Kanao could easily interpret the statement as:

Kanao wa, Douma desu ka?

"Kanao, are you Douma?"

So now we know the reason for her initial panicking over this question. She eventually got over it but likely her "parents" never once asked her thoughts on anything so being called out on one of her most closely-guarded secret all of a sudden must have been really shocking. She was probably thinking "do they know?!" There are other linguistic clues in this sentence like the English loan-word "panikku" but that's way too much to get into here.

Films & TV The idea of a Peter x Jean Grey pairing actually makes a lot of sense for MCU!

All the interactions in the movie could very quickly fall into the "enemies-to-friends-to-lovers" category! Then there's the question of why they wanted to include Jean Grey in a Spider-Man movie. Some might say it was just to introduce the character—which might be true—but that doesn't explain the attempt to inject romantic tension into certain scenes. I'm thinking specifically of the "You have me" line; you could clearly take that in a romantic direction.

The only argument I can see is the business side of things: Tom Holland and Zendaya are a couple, so it makes sense to keep that dynamic going for future films. But I don't think that's the real issue. Sony learned something important with *Brand New Day*: making a quality film is more important than fan service. Look at *No Way Home*—it brought back all three Spider-Men, yet it didn't perform as well at the box office as *Brand New Day*. The reason is simple: people want to see good Spider-Man movies first, not just fan service. And yes, sticking with the Spider-Man/MJ pairing is just fan service for comic book fans and "Tom x Zendaya" shippers. Don't forget that, across three movies, Peter and MJ had nowhere near the chemistry or tension that Peter and Jean Grey showed in that "You have me" scene—which, again, hinted at a budding romance.

Then people might ask, "What about Cyclops? What about him being the main character of the X-Men saga?" I'm sorry, guys, but there's very little chance of that happening. Think about it: introducing Jean Grey in *Spider-Man*, bringing her back for *Secret Wars*, and centering the casting around her... plus, Sadie Sink is the most famous actress in the X-Men cast (aside from indie projects). It’s pretty clear Jean is going to be the lead. And if they make Cyclops her love interest, there's a huge chance he'll just end up looking pathetic again. ...just like in the other two X-Men sagas, because this film will need to continue developing Jean Grey's character after *Secret Wars*, introduce and develop the full X-Men team and the villain, and make all the characters interesting; so, if Cyclops is to be compelling, the romance with Jean Grey really needs to be introduced in that first X-Men movie.

As for Peter, this is the first time since Liz that one of these interactions has worked so well—which is actually quite sad. I think we’re done with the MJ character; some might argue that she seems to remember Peter at the end of *Brand New Day*, but I don't think so. You have to realize that the ending of *Brand New Day* was changed at the last minute because Peter was supposed to die in the original version, so the shot of MJ holding Peter's necklace was simply meant to show her mourning him in her own way.

Anime & Manga (Repost) Pure Copium: I already see Gerad as “Defeated” by the Gotei 13 and the Miracle is just operating in a zombie state after his defeat.

I have already come to grips that the anime is likely not changing anything about the conclusion of the Gerad vs Gotei 13 fight, but now that I have a lot of time to ponder on it, I don’t hate the way the fight turned out nearly as much as I used to.

Imo, he was essentially defeated the second Kenpachi chopped him in half and bit his foot and threw him to the ground, Toshiro froze him in place and broke his sword, and Byakuya turned him into tiny little icicles. Before he turn into a glowing shiva looking action figure, every aspect of him has been completely destroyed over the course of the fight.

Now at the final phase we see of him, the miracle morphed him into was is essentially just a mindless killing machine (that in some respects resembles shiva). Gerad at that point is no longer boasting about overcoming his damages, or explaining how the miracle operates, or declaring his superiority, or even utilizing any of his quincy abilities, his body (if you wanna count the glowing 4 armed sprit a body since that was also completely destroyed) simply acts on instinct attacking everything around it in sight.

A bit unrelated, but this also reminds me of when Griffith put Emperor Ganishka (probably the most powerful apostle around) on his knees, instead of simply admitting defeat and maintaining his pride, he instead throw all of that out the window and jumps into the vat of doom, despair, and everything unfair and became a world encompassing monster that was nigh unbeatable. He was already long defeated by the new Band of the Hawk and what happened after is him just coping.

So while yes the miracle is still operational and tearing up the new soul palace, the warrior of miracles and the elite guard of Yhwach Gerad Valkyrie was throughly beaten by the Gotei 13. It was only a miracle for the Gotei that the rampaging was forcibly shut down by Yhwach after the fight was over.

Anime & Manga Analysis of my fav character from BLEACH. The best representation of selflessness

My favourite character : JUGRAM HASCHWALTH

If i had to describe his character in one word, it would be "selfless". He is selfless to the point it lead to self deprecation and a regretful end. His power's true nature is to help people around him grow while his growth remains stagnant making him the representation of selflessness.

Background: In a world with supernatural abilities of kinds, he stood out for his inability to wield even basic techniques. Jugram is a quincy, the defining trait of a quincy is manipulating spiritual energy and Jugrams inability made him vulnerable, weak and exploitable. As a child, he lived with his uncle (we presumed that his parents are dead) and due to his "disability" jugram as a child was physically and sexually assaulted by his uncle. One evening, unable to catch a prey and fearing his uncles temperament, Jugram met Bazz for the first time. Immediately, the contrast of their characters was clear. Jugram was quiet, calm, scared and weak while Bazz was loud, short-tempered, brave and strong. Bazz became Jugram's first friend.

Backstory:

After Yhwach purged Bazz and Jugram's hometown, they set out on the mission to kill him. For Bazz, killing yhwach was his revenge. For Jugram, killing yhwach was Bazz's wish. This is the first instance of his selfless nature since Jugram was "grateful" of yhwach since his purge freed him from his uncle. Bazz allowed Jugram to tag along him even though Jugram showed no sign of growth and increase in strength after seeing his efforts.

After a timeskip,in order to kill yhwach they planned to infiltrate yhwach ranks and enroll into his new unit. After few back and forth with the recruiting officer, yhwach himself appeared before them claiming that he is here to pick his second in command. Bazz thinks yhwach is referring to him, but as yhwach steps infront of a confused Jugram, Bazz's emotions turned into disdain. After yhwach proclaims jugram as his other half, Jugram looks back at his friend expecting an expression of compassion but instead Bazz's face reflected envy and hate. Here's one more instance of Jugram's selfless nature that after realizing how bazz is feeling, he bargains with yhwach to give up his position to his friend.

Highlight of his character: Yhwach then explains that his disability was the result of his true nature of his power. As Jugram stood before someone who for the first time valued his worthlessness, Jugram betrays Bazz and dedicates his selflessness to someone who values it and Jugram swore loyalty to yhwach.

Development:

After Uryu was picked by yhwach as his successor, Jugram didnt question him or feel any remorse. Jugram also in turn of events ended up killing his only friend Bazz due to his loyalty and during his fight against Uryu, he asks him his reasoning to side with the otherside to which uryu replied that they are his friends. Jugram's face mirrored the same disdain and envious expression of Bazz as Uryu did the opposite of him, he chooses his friend over his loyalty.

Conclusion:

After yhwach "betrays" jugram by taking away his power, to highlight his selflessness he claimed that he was glad that he could be of use to the person who first valued him. And in his final moments, Jugram claims that he doesnt have any regrets and contradicting this, the camera zooms in on the grip of his sword that had bazz's memento of their childhood friendship.

First to his uncle, then his friend Bazz and lastly his king yhwach, Jugram spends his entire life giving himself to other which lead to him never experiencing a relation that doesnt balance on his worth

Anime & Manga Naruto Never Brought Peace

Never never brought peace like he said he was going to. Obito/Madara did while Naruto sat around getting beaten up and ignored until War Time. The Shinobi world is in an era of peacetime under him but he never dissolved anything of the Hyuga for Neji. He never actually ended discriminatory shit against Jinchurikis for Gaara and all of them. He never avenged Itachi or Sasuke for the Uchiha Massacre. He never avenged the Rain Village or even helped it to my knowledge for Nagato and Konan. The issues all got fixed because of the allied Shinobi Alliance and Madara's doing. NOT Naruto.

Naruto is a real-world politician because all of his words are empty and he accomplished and changed absolutely nothing in the Ninja world. He still keeps those fuckass Village Elders in power for Godsake. The Naruto that believes in the Will of Fire and refuses to change the institutions that caused genocides, discrimination, and so much suffering across the world is not the Naruto that deserves to be the Hokage. If one isn't fit to be Hokage if they can't even save a friend, one isn't fit to be a hero if they prioritize the nation over the suffering of children.

Anime & Manga A small detail in discrimination I loved in Chainsmoker Cat (les)

So Chainsmoker Cat is... well it's something, but it touches upon the subject of discrimination. In this anime, Catgirls are said to be discriminated against in Japan.

My favorite example is in last names.

See, in this anime, Catgirls don't always have last names, it's simply not part of their native culture.

One of the characters reveals that they got their grades marked down for not writing their last names on their schoolwork, EVEN THOUGH THEY DON'T HAVE ONE.

I loved this detail, and it's actually pretty accurate.

This anime is based on irl Japan, more or less, and the Japanese education system is notorious for discrimination like this. In some schools, you can actually get marked down for having... HAIR THAT ISN'T BLACK.

So getting marked down for not having a last name would totally be a thing.

It's such a small detail that I loved.

A lot of peoples take on Tenjho Tenge and Oh!Great suck (and no it’s not really a FULL defense post)

I always hear a sense of criticism about Oh!Great most two well known works: Tenjho Tenge and Air Gear that “hE CanT teLL a StoRy for Shit” or that it gets to crazy without fully explaining why and they try to portray him of some guy who can’t write for nothing but has good art and I wanna explain my take on why most of Tenjho Tenge (since this is the one I completed and I’m currently reading Air Gear) ideas don’t work

And it’s simply one word: Over Ambition

I will go on a say that I do like Tenjho Tenge for what it was, the characters were decent enough and developed, the art was obviously amazing and I will say I do like some of the story ideas it presented and the theme of what does fighting mean to the individual but during my reread of it, it felt like Oh!Great got over ambitious with the story ideas and I can rock with them but he doesn’t really implement them in a well executed way which gives off a bunch of lore bloat that detracts from the current story with the feudal japan backstory arc being the biggest offender.

I’m not quite sure how this would imply with Air Gear but that’s just my short explanation of things, what do you guys think?

Edit: but one major gripe I did have was….Oh!Great should’ve cut off some of the unnecessary and gratuitous sexual assaults, ESPECIALLY what the hell was going on with Jushi and Enma Enmi (made worse when the story try to kinda redeem him just because he had a tragic backstory when…no?)

Anime & Manga (LES) Denji dropping the Chainsaw at the end means absolutely nothing [Chainsaw Man]

In the penultimate chapter Pochita ate himself to erase himself which did a timeline reset even though in previous examples of Pochita’s erasure ability showed that it didn’t work like that anyway in this new timeline we are shown that after Denji gets enslaved with Power by Nayuta (who really should’ve been either Makima or different incarnation of the Control Devil) he and Power are sent to a high school to kill a random devil and Denji uses a blood chainsaw to kill it and in the aftermath Denji sees that girl is falling down and rushes to stop her from falling and in the process he drops the chainsaw to catch the girl who is revealed to be Asa

Now the purpose of that scene is show that in a world without Pochita Denji was finally able to make the right decision to drop the chainsaw that symbolizes his ambitions to save someone else

The reason why this action means absolutely nothing is because this is not the same Denji that was reliant and addicted to being Chainsaw Man over the wellbeing of himself and others, but this Denji to him the blood chainsaw was just a weapon that he used to kill a devil and it had no actual significance to him so it really doesn’t mean anything when he drops it to catch Asa

Now something like this could’ve worked at the end if Denji was somehow able to retain his memories of the series and he finds out that he still has a number of erased devils he can vomit out that are still left inside him that includes Pochita and he is presented with a CHOICE on either to vomit out Pochita to bring back his best friend and try regain his life as Chainsaw Man even if it means letting the world go to shit or respect Pochita’s CHOICE and this time try to enjoy this normal life while continuing to follow his own dreams to improve it

Comics & Literature No, Hyde is not "just Jekyll wearing a disguise"

Every once in a while, a new video essay or summary or analysis or critique comes out about some piece of media that no one's read but everyone loves to talk about, and it becomes everybody's go to understanding and interpretation of the work forever. This is annoying even when the video is accurate, because now you're having conversations with people about a thing that they've never read so when you reference details that the summary, however good, inevitably glossed over, you're now speaking two different languages. It's *especially* annoying, though, when the video is wrong.

Just under seven years ago, one such video was a summary of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, by Overly Sarcastic Productions.

Now, no shade to OSP, I love the channel. I've definitely had misreads, misinterpretations, or flawed analyses of works that I've read in the past. To be completely honest, there's a world where you can make an argument that Red didn't even misunderstand one of the main points behind Jekyll and Hyde, so much as she just presented it really poorly. Though I admit, I think the more likely case here is that Red just misinterpreted part of the novella.

Ok, so what am I even talking about? I am referring to a particular interpretation of the novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson that I had almost never seen before OSP's video, and which I now see in almost every discussion of the story ever, which is that Jekyll and Hyde are actually just the exact same person, the exact same mind, and that "Hyde" is nothing more than a physical disguise. That a particularly convincing mask and makeup would have the same affect, that the potion doesn't actually affect Jekyll's mind at all, and that the story is actually a telling of an evil man who pretended to be good, but who reveals his true nature as soon as he thought he could escape social consequence.

Now, some of this is close to being accurate. It is true that Jekyll and Hyde share continuity of consciousness and memory. It is true that Hyde is in many ways Jekyll, or at least of Jekyll. He's not just some random alternate evil personality that the potion magicked from nothing to ruin the poor innocent Dr. Jekyll's life. It is true that Jekyll is, in a real way, a not very good person who was only being kept in check by the pressures of society and his fear of consequences.

But it is also true that the potion, and specifically Jekyll's transformations, do change his mind and psyche. Jekyll-as-Jekyll and Jekyll-as-Hyde are psychologically distinct. Hyde is not merely a disguise, and the potion does more than shift around Jekyll's features. This is particularly true by the end of the novella.

Hyde is Jekyll, but specifically an isolated part of his psyche - all his evil brought to the fore. Or perhaps, more accurately, a version of himself where his evil desires are the dominant force in his brain, rather than the rational, as it is in his natural form. He describes his first transformation as thus:

There was something strange in my sensations, something indescribably new and, from its very novelty, incredibly sweet. I felt younger, lighter, happier in body; within I was conscious of a heady recklessness, a current of disordered sensual images running like a millrace in my fancy, a solution of the bonds of obligation, an unknown but not an innocent freedom of the soul. I knew myself, at the first breath of this new life, to be more wicked, tenfold more wicked, sold a slave to my original evil...

And while Jekyll-as-Jekyll and Jekyll-as-Hyde start out quite closely aligned, with Hyde being unique mostly just in his recklessness and lack of care for societal pressure, this becomes less and and less true as time goes on. If at the end of the novel you could change Jekyll's transformations so that, instead of changing into a completely different physical appearance, only Hyde's eye color changed, or even if he looked exactly the same as Jekyll, Hyde would *still* act radically different than Jekyll does, because he's psychologically much different. He's all of Jekyll's worst impulses and desires given free reign, without restraint. Not "As Hyde, Jekyll chooses to act without restraint because he believes he will be free of consequence" but because as Hyde, Jekyll is in a fundamentally much different state of mind and personality that does not care about inhibiting his urges or being good.

Hyde and Jekyll also begin to perceive themselves as distinct people, or at the very least as distinct personalities. This is why we have scenes like Hyde maliciously destroying all of Jekyll's stuff out of resentment for Jekyll. Jekyll/Hyde were locked in their room at this point, so it's not like public perception affects how Jekyll acts now that he looks different. The different transformations act differently because they are psychologically distinct identities. Jekyll-as-Jekyll doesn't want to destroy all his stuff, he realizes this experiment has failed, wants to erase Hyde, and wants his old life back. Hyde, meanwhile, wants to continue existing, and is lashing out like a caged beast, afraid and furious at the idea of being restrained, or worse, erased.

Hyde is Jekyll's own repressed nature physically separated and given independent embodiment. In a real sense, Hyde is an aspect of Jekyll's personality amplified (basically everything Hyde does, some part of Jekyll wanted to do anyway), but it's not just Jekyll wearing a mask. While still an imperfect analogy, Hyde is more akin to Jekyll's id put in the driver's seat detached from his ego or superego, rather than merely Jekyll wearing a mask. It's something closer to a bravery potion, honestly. You know how sometimes you want to do something you know you shouldn't, so you just decide to do it quickly so you're like "oh well, nothing I can do now, I'll just sit here and feel really bad about it" even though you still chose to do it? The potion is kind of like that. Jekyll takes it, goes out feeling freer than normal, indulges in all his evils, and then afterwards as Jekyll gets to feel all bad about it, yet nonetheless satisfied for having done it.

Yes, Jekyll is still a bad person (if you always secretly had urges to do evil stuff but felt to stifled by society to engage in them, the correct response is to simply not act on those urges, rather than concoct an elaborate potion that would allow you to get over yourself and do them anyway). It's still his urges and desires in Hyde, and he is the architect that made this situation where he-as-Hyde could engage in them. But it is still nonetheless true that Hyde is not simply Jekyll in disguise, and that especially by the end of the novel, Jekyll and Hyde are closer to two distinct identities that see the other as someone else and as an enemy, rather than simply one dude in two different trench coats.
