Richard Rapport, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Dmitry Andreikin and Amin Tabatabaei spent the first half of August playing club chess in Ankara. So did Lei Tingjie, who was two games from the women's world title in 2023, and so did Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş, who is 15 and already the highest rated junior. For a league that quietly pulls five players over 2700, the Turkish Super League gets almost no coverage outside Turkey.

The club Bayegan Pendik won it by winning all fifteen of their matches, which you would think would drive big Elo gains for everyone involved. However, Rapport, Mamedyarov and Lei Tingjie all finished the event rated lower than they started, and so did three of their teammates. Ediz Gürel scored 9.5/14 and lost 7 Elo.

The people who got something out of Ankara were mostly the ones nobody flew in to watch. Khagan Ahmad is fifteen, Azerbaijani, and an IM already; against that field he scored 9.5 out of 13 for a 2704 TPR and his first GM norm, and his live rating crossed 2500 while he was at it. Xeniya Balabayeva took an IM norm and 59 rating points, the biggest gain of anyone in the tournament, and is now at the highest rating she has ever had. Afruza Khamdamova picked up an IM norm too.

Yh i have heard that the turkish federation is not good if im not wrong unly Yagiz has a sponsor and doesnt need support from federation other players like Ediz arent supported by the federation.

i wouldnt be suprised if both of them changed federations in the next few years

It also doesn't help that the existing coverage, and everything connected to the event, is solely written in turkish.
Even the event name itself.

This practically locks out the international chess community.

Tbf most chess leagues barely get any coverage. It's just the nature of the tournaments. Even Bundesliga rarely gets talked about unless someone like Magnus or Hikaru play a few games.

I wanted to follow the results and games, but the large team format made it harder to keep track. The fact that everything was in turkish, also locked out an international audience.

The only english site where you could track it was Chess.com , which is really bad at showing tournaments, and the UI was confusing, though that is out of the organizers hands.

Furthermore it was even hard to look it up, as most of the team names and the event itself were written in turkish script, so I literally could not google the team names.
