Local Area Made a Local's Guide to Claremont for Incoming Students

I run a hyperlocal Claremont website and put together a guide for incoming 5C and graduate students from someone who actually lives here. It includes information that may not be in your orientation packet.

It covers:

  • Move-in dates for all 7 colleges — Pomona/Pitzer Aug 22, CMC Aug 23, KGI Aug 24, Scripps Aug 25, HMC Aug 27, CGU varies (with links to each college's official page)
  • Getting around without a car — Foothill Transit, what's actually walkable, Lyft reality check
  • Where to grocery shop (spoiler: leave the Village for it)
  • Farmers Market schedule and what's worth buying
  • What the Village is actually good for vs. overhyped

Guide: https://iloveclaremontca.com/Guides/claremont-student-guide.html

Move-in specifics: https://iloveclaremontca.com/Guides/claremont-colleges-move-in-2026.html

Happy to answer questions about the area too.

Where to actually eat off-campus without blowing your budget (5C Cheap Eats Guide)

First, a huge thank you to everyone who checked out and shared the Welcome to Claremont Student Guide! (Also thank you to the moderators for making it a Community Highlight! <3) For anyone arriving on campus or getting settled in, that guide is still live as your essential starter manual. It covers local transit hacks, car-free grocery routes, banking, and practical day-to-day logistics around the Village.

Next, I asked you about, and promised FOOD. While your dining plan is your best budget tool, there are nights when you just need real tacos, study fuel, or a break from campus dining halls.

To help you navigate food off-campus without getting hit by the Village markup, check out the new Cheap Eats & Student Deals Guide:

  • Confirmed Student Discounts & Timing Hacks: Specific daily windows where you can score $5–$7 bowls (40–60% off normal menu pricing).
  • Everyday Meals Under $15: Walkable Village spots where standard menu items (tacos, wraps, bowls) won't blow your weekly budget.
  • The Pomona Taco Run: Reliable budget spots 10–15 minutes away for authentic $2–$3 tacos and legendary fried shrimp.

Read the full breakdown, maps, and hours here:

What are your go-to budget spots around town that belong on the list?

Studio Available Near the Claremont Colleges - Oasis Apartments

Hi everyone! I’m looking for someone to take over my studio lease at Oasis Apartments in Claremont through the official relet process.

The studio is approximately 429 sq. ft. and is in a great location right across from the Claremont Village. It’s about a 15-minute walk to Pomona College and just a few minutes by car from the 5Cs.

Some details:

  • Studio apartment (~429 sq. ft.)
  • In-unit AC
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • $50 monthly utility allowance for water/electricity
  • Free on-site laundry
  • Pool + gym
  • Free parking
  • Furnished Kitchen
  • Lots of natural sunlight
  • Quiet community
  • Restaurants, coffee shops, and Claremont Village are a ~2-minute walk away
  • My lease rate is lower than what Oasis is currently offering for comparable studios

This would be a relet rather than a sublet, so you would take over the lease directly through the Oasis leasing office.

I’m looking to have someone take over the lease as soon as possible. If you’re a Claremont Colleges student/staff member or know someone still looking for housing near campus, please message me! I’m happy to send photos, pricing, lease details, or connect you directly with the leasing office.

Information on PhD and atmosphere of the university

Hi everyone,

I'm a grad student right now, and putting together universities to apply to for PhD programs. I just noticed Claremont Graduate University has a PhD in English, which is my focus. Can anyone give me any information on the program? How are the faculty at supporting your research? How much funding is there? Are there department dynamics to be aware of? Just wanted to know in case I add this school to the list of schools I am looking at. Thank you!

Mudd, CMC, or Pomona for math/CS as a student athlete

My son plans to major in math and is interested in double majoring or minoring in CS. He will also be an athlete (swimmer). The Claremont Colleges are his top choice, but he is undecided between these 3 schools. Which would you recommend for a math major?

Can a math major at CMC do an off campus major/minor in CS?

Is Mudd a lot more rigorous? Do athletes at Mudd have a hard time balancing everything? Can they have fun or just work and be stressed all the time?

What are outcomes like across the 3 colleges for these majors? I think he may be interested in grad school in CS or employment in either software engineering, quant finance.

Local Area Cheap Eats and Student Deals in Claremont

Hi all,

I'm working on the article on cheap eats and student deals/discounts in Claremont. Do you have any spots/recommendations worth adding where you like to eat when you don't want to have a meal at your dining hall? Thanks!

Where can I find wasps (and other bugs)?

I absolutely adore wasps and was really looking forward to seeing tarantula hawks in particular! However, nothing in the student garden at Pitzer is blooming right now, and the only bug I’ve seen is a dead ten-lined June beetle. Does anyone know the best place to see wasps? Or any bugs, really?

Thanks!!

Hi I’m bringing an electric scooter to campus. Should I buy a lock for it? Or is it normal to just leave one outside buildings and it won’t get stolen?

Pitzer for a non-activist?

Hello y'all! I'm currently making my college list and I'm unsure if Pitzer should remain on it.

A lot of what I have read makes Pitzer seem like a wonderful community and genuinely home-y. I also love the thought of being in the Claremont Consortium and interacting with people of various backgrounds and interests.

The main reason why I hesitate to apply is because of cultural fit. What I've seen online is that Pitzer has a reputation for social justice and activism. While I do support equality and justice, I don't see myself as the sign-holding type nor do I constantly think about change-making.

For anyone who felt similarly before attending: did you ever feel culturally out of place or pressured to act? Does the diversity of the 5Cs make that less noticeable in practice? Is Pitzer not as extreme as its reputation may suggest?

Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks!

Pitzer Pitzer Mattresses

Hey all. Totally random question - and I know most of you are in deep with class registration, so I appreciate your input. Looking to get a bed extender for my daughter's dorm bed. Does anyone know the thickness (in inches) of the mattresses? I'd like to order the additional padding needed for the extender that is the same thickness as the mattress if I can. Thank you all in advance.

Title: Best/easiest Area 4 classes at Pomona?

I’m trying to figure out some classes for my first semester and wanted to ask about Area 4 (geology, physics, astronomy, biology).

What are some of the easiest or most manageable Area 4 classes you’ve taken? I’m not a science person really so I was looking for a class that might be more simple or just enjoyable.

What are the Scripps Intro Bio 1 Lab classes like?

I know it's required to take the bio lab if you're taking an intro biology class but I'm wondering what exactly you do in that class that takes 4 hours? Does it always take that long? Also are you graded for it separately even though it has no class credits?
