Experience

Until my early 20s, I grew up working for my dad's roofing and construction company. So, I can handle the basics of roofing, demoing, plumbing, drywall, and finish work.

I've worked in tech for 20 years, the last ten managing people and projects. I feel that may be relevant.

Why am I looking for work? With AI came layoffs and too few openings. 8 months without a gig.

The offer

I leveraged my home demolition and remodel project photos to land an offer at a local Florida water remediation and construction company.

The offer is to contract the work or W2 $20/hour with a minimum of 40-hour week. For central Florida and my experience setting above apprentice (as I understand it) and journeyman - what route should I take? If W2, what is a fair wage starting point while I settle in?

I'm currently 24 looking for new work. I've done landscaping for a few years now and have reached the wage ceiling without getting into management positions and all that. I want my physical labour to translate into more cash, it doesn't feel worth it doing 12-18 hour snow removal shifts and with how inconsistent the work is, it not giving me anything substantial over the long term. I also don't want to go to school and do really technical stuff so It seems like floorhand might be the job I'm looking for. I'm just curious if anyone has got any tips for going into it, I am good for physical labour, as I said doing landscaping for some years, and I've also done commercial bricklaying so I'm used to getting yelled at and all that good stuff. I'm located in Alberta so I'm sure finding companies won't be too hard I'm just hoping they will be willing to do on site training as I have not done any O&G work. Another question I have, I don't plan on doing it forever and I'm wondering if I did get into it, would I be able to translate it into different jobs in years time that maybe isn't so physically demanding? I don't really want to be a broken vegetable in my later years I just want some good paying work for a couple years at least. Gotta make that bread for the wife.

I came across a breakdown of how AI is being used in construction, and I’m curious how much of this is actually happening in the real world vs. just tech companies selling the idea.

They’re talking about things like AI-assisted estimating/takeoffs, scheduling, predictive maintenance, analyzing project data, documenting jobs, identifying safety issues, etc.
But I’m much more skeptical about trusting AI with things where experience and judgment actually matter.

Proper posture is to dip your balls into the bucket before lifting.

How often should these open gears on *MEWP be lubricated and what is an efficeint method? The OEM's are vague but 100-250 hours is stated. Often when I see the gears on these MEWP, (aka mobile elevated work platform, boom lift, genie) the gears are bone dry. I am thinking a heavy solid open gear spray but the other issue is cleaning off the old grease. Thanks in advance.

Feels like work is gatekept from me

Hi everyone, I am 22F, 1 year into the workforce and believe that I am subtly being discriminated against. I’d like to get others opinions on my situation though before I jump to that conclusion.

I currently work in construction engineering and am the youngest and only female in a team of 15 men. For the past year, I’ve been asking for work but have been told there’s no work or given nontechnical work such as annotating drawings to “make things look pretty and aesthetic”. If I do get technical work and I screw up, I get berated pretty heavily mostly on the aesthetics of my drawings even if the work is technically correct. I get told things like “your drawings make me want to throw up” or “you need to put more effort into the job” even though I was already trying my best and seniors were too busy to answer my questions. Additionally I found out that my manager has been asking my male coworkers if they believe I am “capable” of doing a task despite them being hired around the same time or a year ahead of me whereas I have never been asked input on whether male coworkers are capable of a task.

Last week there was a team meeting where we talked about work distribution and since I had the lightest workload, the senior vice president told the project manager to put me on a task which is highly technical. However I found out today that the project manager gave the task to the other two male junior engineers who are at the same level as me and I was just told again to “update the tags on the drawings”. This situation confused me because that project manager kept saying how the project needs a lot of help yet he is just not giving work to me.

This whole situation makes me feel like I suck at my job. Even though I admit I have screwed up at times my male coworkers have screwed up too, yet they still get assigned the more technically complex and challenging work. I should also mention that these male coworkers both have “mentors” assigned to them whereas I have no mentor assigned to me because my previous mentor quit. She was also a woman on my team who was given the construction admin work mainly instead of technical.

What do I have to do to get those same opportunities as my male coworkers and earn trust from the project managers? At this point my career is suffering because I am not being given technical work.

How bad is it?

Oh yea, no plans or permits just straight "I got this bro".

We are using Milwaukee towers but they can only do so much. Im thinking of buying a couple of Seedevil lights only down side is they have to be plugged in.
This would be used for a street project.

I (35F) am looking for solutions to stay cool, I get very hot very fast and it makes me really sick. I live in SW Florida and the most heat exposed people that I see are the construction works here so I was hoping you had an answer.

I have bad acid reflux and it spikes when I get hot, I'm starting a new job soon and I'm worried I will get too hot so I'm looking for fans, ice vests or really anything you use to stay cool. Im going to possibly be doing biohazard and being in a full suit will make me so hot I know. Ive done this work before, the heat and environment are so unprdictable. I need something that's dependable and won't crash out half way through a decomp job so if you know of any durable things I could use I would appreciate any advice.

I've seen ice vests and harnesses but I'm looking for personal input and experience with stuff you have actually tried or has good reviews. Im sorry that this isn't construction related and I appreciate any advice.

My first Idea was to drive some nails with the initials of the coworkers somewhere hidden in our storage depot, but that's kinda obvious and since I'm the last one left Boss man would know it was me.
