Support I need you guys
I've been a member of this group as soon as I found out my wife was pregnant. I appreciate all the posts and comments. I participated the best I could. Now I'm in need of your support.
Monday my daughter had diarrhea. From 3 in the morning to 23 at night it didn't budge with normal medication and rice. She went potty 16 times that day.
We decided to go to the hospital. She got admitted with my wife and they started testing her. They first took a test from the stool. It was not viral. And when they started testing for bacteria everything came back negative. They also started her on antibiotics.
In the next 2 days she was given antibiotics but she kept vomiting any food she ate. The diarrhea started to recede but she was still on the potty a lot.
Then Thursday came along and they found e.coli and damage to the kidneys. They immediately transferred her from the infectious hospital she was in to an all pediatric hospital (probably the best doctors in Bucharest, Romania).
Here they told us she has something called "Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS)".
It's bad. Like really bad. They told us we can be in the hospital anywhere from 14 to 60 days.
Shiga is a toxin made by a strain of e. coli that affects the blood vessels. First the kidneys. Then it can start affecting the brain, lungs, heart. She can even die. About 1-3% chance. There's a 30% chance of kidney damage. And 70% chance of full recovery.
The problem is there is no medication for this. You can only provide the body with the things it needs to help beat and eliminate it. We need to let the bacteria do it's thing. Even those that make a full recovery have to do dialysis while the kidneys are down and recovering.
Today is the day I cried the most in my life. Even more than when my mother died at 15 (my kid has my mother's name as a tribute to her). It's now 4 in the morning and I'm up reading about this syndrome, and watching my kid to not disturb her IVs (she has two). Tomorrow they will do general anesthesia and insert a catheter in her neck.
At 5 in the morning they said they will come draw some blood for the morning tests. She has tests every 6 hours. They are monitoring a lot of things. It breaks my heart because they need blood from the tips of the fingers. And it's painful, and she cries, and I cry.
She's the smartest girl. She didn't cry when they put the IVs in. She's our world. And now I'm scared I'm going to lose her.
I need you guys to pray for my girl. If you don't believe in god just send positive thoughts. A little girl in Romania needs them more than anything.

If you need a little hope, I had the very same thing happen (E-coli that caused HUS) when I was 4. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital. This was back in the early 90s. I am now healthy in my 30s with no complications or kidney damage.
Just a thought, but I have nearly 10 memories from that short period of time. Most of them are actually positive or neutral. I remember good times of people giving me candy and gifts and I had a roommate who I really liked and toys I got to play with in the hospital. Just try to be positive for her and strong and she will do great and it will just be part of her story.

u/Blapstap Jul 31 '26
Give her the biggest helium balloon of her favorite thing you can find. That will be a memory for life
33
u/Slggyqo Jul 31 '26
I will second this. When I was 7 I got a skull fracture and had to spend a week in the hospital.
The worst memory I have is that the tape for my IV itched, but all of my other memories are positive. Toys and gifts, popsicles, riding around the hospital in a wagon, watching movies with my parents-great memories.

My sister and I also had this and are fine now--for more hope. It's brutal and horrible but very survivable. I can't imagine watching my baby go through this, though. You are being so strong for her. She knows you are there and it is carrying her through right now. She'll be okay, tata <3

We are here with you brother. Kiss her tears away and give her all the love she can stand.
Be sure to rest and eat. You have to be strong when she comes home. Do not feel bad to eat and sleep. She needs you, and that's how she gets you.
Focus on the 70%. Don't let the low chances overwhelm you.
Keep reaching out here if you need us!

This is A+ advice OP. All four points. I’m so sorry you and your daughter have to go through this, your deep love for her comes across through your words. Hang in there dad.

Best advice here, she needs you at whatever closest to 100% you can muster. Be her rock and keep her spirits high. The mind does crazy stuff to those who are positive and have the right attitude to beat this.
With that said, I’m not the best at praying but I’ll also do my best to plea with you.
Godspeed from Georgia, USA

Great advice. I've been in a similar spot. It's the most exhausting thing I've ever been through. If I wasn't pushed to take care of myself, I wouldn't have been able to care for my loved one.
So choke down some hospital food, you need the nutrition. Treat yourself with some outside food, maybe have a nice lunch somewhere. Most importantly, find a way to rest, I sat in my truck and listened to music when we were between check ins.
You need to be at your best to care for your Love.
I'm praying for you brother.

Another person from PA here also sending love and prayers.
I hope one day this is just a memory, OP, of a hard time, that you can look back and laugh at the hard parts of together. Or that maybe feels like it was just a bad dream. And I know that sounds wild right now. But I’ve gone through some major stuff. Stuff that lasted what felt like forever at the time (some just week long stays in the hospital, some years long battles with medical conditions that were relentlessly hellish, some ongoing). I can say for my nightmare situations that ended, they’re like bad dreams. Some I do laugh over (remember the time all the skin peeled off of my face? That’s a laugh one. It was traumatic then, but now it’s a funny memory. The time I spent years with my hands and feet itching, blistering, cracking open, literally no end in sight? It’s just like a bad dream. Not a big upset anymore. Just a bad dream that happened and ended.)
And kids? Kids are great at adapting and overcoming so long as they have a great support system in place.
Take care of yourself. Practice your self care. Put on a brave face for her and help her. This will become a bad memory later. Maybe then a nightmare or a time with funny memories (remember that time you ripped your IV out and all the nurses came running at once?! You got the royal treatment for days afterwards!)
Hang in there. All my love to you and your princess and family, OP 🩷

I’m sorry for you and your family. Be strong, be brave, as hard as that is.
We almost lost my daughter last Christmas, she aspirated a carrot, had to be life flighted, and put on ecmo for four days while her lungs recovered. She was without oxygen for 23 minutes. The MRI shows damage to her watershed, right occipital lobe and her basil ganglia.
It’s been a year and she’s doing amazing, she has no measurable cognitive damage at all. She was 2 when this happened.
Miracles happen, no one expected my daughter to live, let alone go home after two weeks, we still had lots of PT and OT. But we did it at home!
I will pray and hope for you and your family.

My son was born 108 days premature. We had so many come to Jesus talks in the next 48 hours that I lost count. It was brutal. He was discharged from the hospital exactly 108 days later on his original due date. And now i have an amazing 3 year old with no deficits sitting next to me eating dessert.
Is there any correlation? No. Can i tell you it will all be ok? No. But I CAN tell you there is always hope, no matter what the numbers say.

Lord, I pray for this family, and especially this precious little girl that you created. Please turn your face towards them and shine your love and grace upon them. I ask that you reach down and heal this little girl, knowing fully that you are still a God that performs miracles even today. You knew her before she was even born and know the number of hairs she has on her head. You are not surprised by this condition and have coordinated and scheduled the exact Doctors, nurses and all medical personnel that will be helping her recover. Ease their anxiety, Lord and be with them as they travel this path, knowing they are not alone.

I learned about this disease in medical school and never thought much of it, but having a child and watching them with it I can see how scary it can be. You must be terrified. Try not to lose yourself in the statistics and recovery rates. Watch and be there for your daughter. She’ll tell you how she’s doing. She’s in the best place for it and you’ve made sure of that. This is hard but not impossible and the sun will shine on you both again. You got this man
