A note in slurs in the subreddit

Slurs of any form are not permitted in the subreddit by any person. Use of slurs results in a permaban. You can and will get a perma ban for single time slur use

The mod team has been extremely disappointed in the amount of people we have had to ban for use of sulrs and racist language surrounding the issue of Brooke using the N word in 2016 by both those who think Brooke should be forgiven and those who think otherwise.

We are working hard to respond to reports, monitor threads, and investigate accounts to eliminate bad actors, troll, and racists from the subreddit. We thank everyone for their reports, (please keep them coming!) as well as their patience as we work through everything.

We have noted an alarming number of people who do not understand why slur may be ok within the group that it's used against but not by outsiders. I hope this explanation can help some of you understand.

People in minorities often report that they have experienced fear of being killed due to discrimination multiple times in their lives. People who perform such horrible acts often use slurs as a signal. "You are not safe. I can and will harm you.". So when you as an outsider use those words, that is what someone the slur is against will hear. it doesn't matter the context, it doesn't matter if it's in a song, it sounds. like a threat every time. It's not nice to have to hear threats all the time, and I'm sure most people here would not wish to come across that way.

If someone who is part of that group uses a slur you know they're probably not going to kill you for being that minority, though I remind everyone that we have 0 tolerance for slurs in the subreddit as on reddit no one can be sure who you are.

Does Kelly know the difference between typecasting and stereotyping

Like yes, by definition, Brooke was typecasted as an acro dancer when she was capable of a lot more. Nia was typecasted and stereotyped as a Black dancer. She was never given pretty lyrical or pretty acro like Brooke. She was given solos with really bad jazz/blues/soulful music, her solos always revolved around being emancipated or some form of working class style, or was given solos were she had to wear an Afro. She was a stereotyped as a dancer bc she was Black while being typecasted. Those are not the same thing

Maddie should have been on broadway

Hands down. I think she’s great as an actress. She would have been phenomenal on broadway. She should still try for it

Question/discussion No matter what you do, you can’t win - improvising when you forget you dance

Abby was always so frustratingly hypocritical when dancers forgot their routines on the show. She would yell at and humiliate the girls when they forgot their routines and froze on stage (like she did to Paige, Chloe, and Mackenzie), but if the child improvised when they forgot, she would berate them and act as though they were choreographing their own routine. The only time I can think of off the top of my head when a child was celebrated for improvising when they forgot was Kalani.

I think everyone understands that the purpose of competing is to perform the choreography that you’re given, but when you’re learning multiple numbers in less than a week, it’s understandable that literal children might forget a few steps. I’d understand Abby’s frustration more if this was a situation where the children had been learning those dances for weeks or even months, but they were often learning their routines in just a few days and usually recycling combos from other numbers.

It just seemed incredibly unfair. I don’t think anyone would have ever thought the children were choreographing their own thing knowing Abby would crucify them for doing so afterwards.

People are so uncomfortable seeing the girls all grown up.

Some people are so awkward seeing the girls doing mature things because we watched them grow up on tv, like every other child star. I get it they're adults now and they grow up like every regular kid. Just like Drew Barrymore for example, she was a child star and became a sex symbol in her 20s during the 90s and Miley Cyrus during her Bangerz era. When Fitting In came out people were shocked seeing Maddie having a sex scene, Jojo's Snapchat pics and Kenzie being a cigarette smoker. The thing about being a child entertainer is that now matter how old you'll get people will still see you as the kid they watch on television.

Question/discussion Jill, Jess, Melissa and Holly were extremely hypocritical in s5

I’m rewatching dance moms and one thing that made the show almost impossible to watch on season 5 was how unfair the moms were to Ashlee.

And I know sometimes Ashlee would also say stuff to trigger them (specially Jill) but one thing is true: Jess and Jill were ALWAYS personal on their insults. Jill was ridiculous screaming in front of Brynn saying that she had no brain in her head just because she was mad that Abby made Brynn learn Kendall’s solo. She should be mad at Abby, but instead she’d blame it on Brynn all the time.

And what shocks me the most is that Holly didn’t say a single thing. She’s usually really honest to stick up for what she thinks is right and when she thinks the moms are in the wrong she expresses it. But in season 5 every time Jill, Jess or Melissa would start talking about Brynn and make fun of her she would just sit there and make faces as if they had the right to do it just because everyone hated Ashlee.

And even tho Jill insisted in saying that Ashlee talked about her kid, EVERY TIME Ashlee opened her mouth to talk about Kendall in a choreography she was being technical and it only happened like 2 or 3 times max. Jill kept talking bad about a child and every time Ashlee tried to defend her the moms would start throwing a tantrum and calling her a horrible person. Kira literally made fun of the way jojo talked, Melissa was always being sneaky to get her daughters ahead, Jill would constantly talk about Kendall being too good to dance with Nia or Jojo. But they acted like they were victims while Ashlee was a mean girl. (Not to mention Kendall’s mean girl allegations and Mackenzie saying there was a bully among the girls and one time she had to stick up for her friend because it was getting insufferable)

I seriously can not get it into my head because Jill was literally bullying a child to the point Brynn would start crying on rehearsals saying “they” were going to make fun of her. Mackenzie CRIED when Jill was being unfair to Brynn and even she said “what adult talks to a child like that? She can’t do this” and instead of acting like a grown woman and sticking up to her kid and her friend, Melissa just took Kenzie out of the room and started scolding her for defending Brynn.

I feel so bad for the two of them because Jill and Jess were making her every day hell and Mackenzie’s mom wouldn’t take her kids side because of a stupid rivalry that Abby created.

When Brynn’s trio (w/ Mackenzie and Kalani) won against Kendall’s trio (Maddie and Jojo) the moms started telling everyone that the results were rigged, and they did it to the kid’s face. Later they tried to deny it and make it seem like Ashlee and Brynn were making it up but there’s a scene were Kenzie and Maddie are in the car with Melissa and Kenzie said she was sad about the moms lying saying the competition was fixed, Melissa literally told her kid to shut up and said they shouldn’t talk about it and that it didn’t happen. Like WTF is wrong with her her daughters trio WON a competition and she can’t even be happy for her ?? I won’t even mention the episode where that boys mom lied saying Brynn didn’t want to dance, Kalani and Nia confirmed Brynn was telling the truth and the moms still chose to believe a woman who barely spoke English.

This made me sick to my stomach and can’t get pass it watching season 6. Holly’s definitely better than this and I wish she wasn’t so silent about Brynns mistreatment because usually she was the mom to advocate when people were being unfair to children.

Abby and the moms

I’m on season 6 right now right after Abby’s been charged by the government. Particularly the episode where she gets a call during the competition and leaves.

Sorry but Jill getting so mad about it is so annoying 😭 Babes. Abby is facing years in prison and obviously got an extremely bad call about the case, i’d say that takes priority over Kendall’s solo. Honestly in general how mad the moms get over Abby’s whole situation is so annoying, i cannot deal with them getting annoyed at her leaving completions or just being a wreck in general. Obviously it’s annoying she’s not tapped in but she has bigger fish to fry 😭😭

Melissa comebacks

Sometimes when I rewatch I get so annoyed at Melissa because there were so many ways she could’ve argued against the other moms (even tho I do disagree with the broader favoritism). Like the drop dead diva roll, the magazine, literally any lead role or solo win. Yes abby inappropriately (extremely inappropriately) favored maddie. But like. If the moms were mad every time maddie got something, if I were Melissa, I would’ve been like “Ok so if anything maddie gets is rigged then, should I just force my daughter to stop participating out of fairness and not allow her to do anything? What would you guys like me to do.” Like genuinely the way they took away any accomplishment by just saying oh abby made that happen. Like yes she probably did. I’m not excusing abby. Sometimes I just get annoyed Melissa never even had a good or logical comeback like girl stand up oh my god. Stand up for your daughter’s talent! Or literally say to the other moms “ok so I should tell abby to stop being nice to my daughter because that won’t result in abuse towards her”. This is a nonsensical post because dance moms is a nonsensical show where there was probably no correct response ever due to the impossibility of drama, producers, contracts, Abby’s abuse. But like I just wonder what the show would’ve looked like if she really stood on business earlier on lol. Anyone else ever think this watching back?

Question/discussion Moments where Abby was right/had a point

In Season 6, when the girls didn’t want to do Mohammed Ali dance, and just took over did their own dance, and excluded the new girls, it was kind of rude

This hangs in my classroom and makes me think of the fact that Melissa can't sew (which means she has zero talent) 😂

Question/discussion Kelly’s willful ignorance

Listening to BTTB and Kelly has continuously made so many comments about Abby being “right” about typecasting Nia. Just because Nia is part African American doesn’t mean the only times she’d be cast would be due to her ethnicity. For whatever reason, Kelly keeps making comments about it “making sense” that Nia gets jungled themed and ethnic type dances. It’s so weird to me.

Melissa Abby

so do you guys agree that it was Melissa that smuggled the money and Abby was the fall guy bc i think that’s what happened so they went to Australia and came back with a bunch of Australia money i think the signs came a few episodes later when Abby dumped out her purse and MelIssa came and tried to put it back and hide it so everything was normal for until Season 6 and the beginning of season 6 was when Abby started getting into legal trouble with the law I think it was bc it was tax season and Abby had to pay all that money back and she claimed she didn’t have the money even though she did that’s when Melissa started acting weird and her and Abby relationship started to go downhill and Melissa tried to play it cool so Melissa announced in S6 E15 she only had 4 weeks left and it seemed like everyone knew bc rumors were already circulating that she was leaving and said her girls had a lot going on i don’t think Maddie and Mackenzie were all that busy with stuff in 2016 the reason why Melissa left was bc things were getting bad for Abby and She knew Abby would tell on Melissa and Melissa would probably go to jail so her leaving was a way to get out of trouble i think that is why Abby treated Melissa girls differently bc Abby i think figured Melissa was going to try and get out of it I think Melissa was a huge liar we all know she was what your thoughts about this do you guys agree with me or no

Question What DM Moment Would You Class As Iconic?

Dances, arguments or interviews that would make the history books for reality TV gold!

For mine it has to be fight between Cathy, Jill and Abby. When Abby was smacked with the purse I lost it.

Question Which OG mom had your favourite style?

Melissa's style was the closest to mine (feminine, frilly) but somehow every single piece was as ugly as that style can possibly be. I think I looked Christi's outfits the most but Kelly's hair and makeup was so chic (it's literally the Karen cut but it's iconic on her). I think Holly's outfits were always professional and sleek, there were no lows, but there were no highs either. What do you think?
