Dart frog feeder options

Post image

I have been feeding my juvenile tincs fruit flies - and I was curious if feeding pinhead crickets every once in a while would be a good way to mix it up for them. Or any other feeders for that matter, just to give em something new. Any thoughts or recommendations?

Broken Water Feature?

The bottom of my tank is sponge, with a water pump buried in it. That way, I can have a waterfall without any standing water. The problem is, the pump is driving me a bit crazy with the noise. If I turn it off, I'll just have stagnant water under the sponge, not circulating at all. There's a bunch of plants rooted in the sponge, as well. Can I turn it off, or would that be risky?

Suitable enclosure?

Hey folks, I recently got my hands on a 45x45x30 exo tetra enclosure and was wondering if it'd be suitable for a frog or two? I know the surface area seems OK but is 30cm/12 inches tall enough for them?

DART FROG FEEDING

Hello everyone! Just a keeper who likes to find alternatives here. I was thinking about ways to feed some sort of man made food to dart frogs, not live pray. That would make the keeping this amazing animals a lot easier and even from a conservation standpoint. I was thinking of some sort of vibrating dish that you put pellets or other types of food and it gives it movement like a live prey. Has anyone tried anything? Or why is this not a good idea?

Help me decide on inhabitants!

This is my newest dart frog viv, 18x18x18. I’m letting it cycle and grow in for a while before adding any frogs. I have some leaf litter and food for the springtails but I wanted to see how the plants would grow in in case I needed to rearrange before adding the bulk of it (live oak). Also planning on getting a few finishing touches once I have decided on a species. There’s a reptile expo near me at the end of September, I’d like to have an idea of inhabitants before going. I have a d. Auratus pair and would maybe like a little bolder species. I originally was dead set on a phyllobates terribilis mint pair, but now I’m looking at ranitomeya imitator, ranitomeya variabilis ‘southern,’ phyllobates vittatus, phyllobates bicolor ‘uraba’ (questions about the morph of this one?), and phyllobates terribilis mint. A loud call sounds really cool to me, but not totally necessary. What have your experiences with these species? Would one of them be particularly suited to my set up when it grows in? I have melanogaster breeding supplies already, is making the swap to crickets particularly difficult? Also, any suggestions for this viv? Thank you guys for the help! I was impatient when setting my last viv up and am trying to make this one more intentionally.

Frogs are about 2 years old. Only ever seen one call. Could this be a pregnant female or is she just eating a little too good?

Suggestions for new enclosure

I started my first vivarium about 18 months ago and it has grown in very well but I'm really not happy with the factory foam background. I'm thinking of buying a new enclosure and going the custom background route and then just transferring these two over once it's grown in a bit.

Anyone have any good links or tips before I start building?

First Dart Frog Vivarium, would love some advice or critique

I'm brand new to dart frogs and I've been putting together a vivarium for the past couple weeks with plans to get a pair (or potentially a trio) of Dendrobates Tinctorius towards the end of september, the tank is from Habistat and is 60×45×60cm (24×18×24 in inches).

I still have some things I need to pick up (thermometer, hygrometer, misting system etc) but so far, does this setup look okay? Is there anything I should add or remove?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I want to have the best for these new little friends, so don't hold back on any critiques. Thanks in advance :)

Feeder fly Question, mold in culture

I am a newbie when it comes to culturing fruit flies i have no idea where to look or who to ask so if anyone could point me in the right direction thank you!

I made a homemade fruit fly media mix

Using ingredients :

Water
Vinegar
Instant mashed potatoes
Powdered sugar
And nutritional yeast

And place it inside this container with my baby fruit flies from the store bought container.

To my surprise not much long later there is black and green mold-like growth atop of the mix! Curious as to whether this is a normal part of the process or bad and what i can do to change it. My flightless fruit flies ended up laying eggs in here which is exactly what i wanted, there are larvae crawling around and the population has noticeably increased.

Are these safe to feed my frogs?

Legal keeping in Massachusetts

Hey all! I’m considering relocating to MA, but I’m trying to clarify something about the legality of keeping my frogs. Specifically, I see that in MA it says you’re not allowed to keep anything listed on the IUCN red list without a permit. It doesn’t say specifically what the listing must be, but I’m assuming that’s referring to some degree of threatened status as it would be crazy if they included least concern. I have a population of captive bred Phyllobates terribilis, which are listed as endangered by the IUCN. If I move to MA, will I have to part with my terribilis to stay clear of the law? Or is there nuance here that I’m missing? Thank you!

Here is a better video of the babies. I suspect the one on the left has SLS and won't make it. The one on the right is healthy. Please excuse the calling Sylvatica in the background. He never shuts up lol.
