Roach Mom, Thursdays this Fall at 6/7 Central on ABC!

642

u/whatawynn OC: 1 Apr 13 '26

sometimes you try to call your mom for help with the roach situation and she doesn’t pick up 😕

334

u/conventionistG Apr 13 '26

I'd say you might be overreacting, but there were three of them.

118

u/TurnipWorldly9437 Apr 13 '26

The mom might be three roaches in a trenchcoat, though...

12

u/barsknos OC: 1 Apr 13 '26

How would your mom have helped?

139

u/Chronocidal-Orange Apr 13 '26

Come on, we all know roaches are scared of moms

You've never asked your parents for guidance when you had an unfamiliar problem? Seemingly a college kid away from home, that's like the go to solution.

u/whatawynn OC: 1 Apr 13 '26

128

u/wormymaple Apr 13 '26

I too cried many times about dental nonsense a few months ago (crown replacements, crown failure, another replacement, root canal after that replacement...just ugh). I feel ya!

35

u/grudginglyadmitted Apr 13 '26

I cried three times about doctors appointments in the last week. I had a really important appointment I needed to go to on Monday: I have way too many platelets and might have a (very unobtrusive and unproblematic, doesn’t even affect lifespan) blood cancer.

Woke up with a migraine, tried to push through and physically couldn’t get out of bed. I had to text my mom, as an adult, to call and cancel for me because hearing sound and trying to talk hurt so bad. Cried about that (guilt, frustration). Then I got really lucky and they rescheduled me for Thursday. I left for the appointment with 5-10 minutes to spare and then hit insane traffic what should have been 5 minutes from the office in my small town that doesn’t get traffic like that. I guess there must have been a car accident. As soon as I realized I was going to be late I called them, but they left me on hold for fifteen minutes, during which I cried (frustration), and they then answered after I was in sight of the office and said 10 minutes was too late, I missed the appointment and would have to reschedule. They rescheduled me a month out. I cried again on the drive home after turning around in their parking lot (frustration, exhaustion, guilt).

9

u/Somandyjo Apr 13 '26

I feel your pain. I have absolutely cried in frustration over similar situations.

You cried because of the dentist 14 times in a 7 day period? That's gotta be a story.

32M, if it matters, but I cry on average maybe once a year. Maybe up to thrice a year if I'm in a relationship or a family member is in poor health. My dad had a heart attack a couple years back and I about filled my quota for the decade when that happened.

It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's cathartic and releases a lot of built up tension. I wouldn't say I enjoy doing it, but there's clearly a need for it now and then and I don't fight it when it happens.

I have a hard time comprehending how a dentist could make me cry 14 times in a single week unless I was getting some SERIOUS work done, or they were straight up just going to take all my teeth away.

When I was dealing with health issues and crying nonstop, I really needed treatment for depression. “Tearfulness” comes a lot more easily when seriously depressed. My health issues are real and diagnosed but felt so much more doom-y before I got meds for depression. With that medication I realized I may have some health issues, but I am okay, I am gonna be okay. But meds were absolutely crucial for me and I didn’t try them until 30 (mostly bc people in my family have a lot of medication fear and perpetuate potential myths/things that don’t happen to everyone like “meds make you a numb zombie”).

My only regret is not starting them sooner. I was diagnosed with depression at age 7 and wish I hadn’t spent 23 years raw-dogging it due to unfounded fears. Meds helped me to get myself back, and I encourage anyone experiencing depression, anxiety, etc to at least speak to their relevant health professional about options—and if you’re afraid of meds, have a conversation about your fears and questions!

My therapist at the time helped me to work through anxiety about starting meds, and helped me realize that in general, the meds I was potentially trying wouldn’t have any permanent effects if they didn’t work for me. I credit her with dispelling my fears so I could give it a shot, which was life-changing in a good way. I am not numb to feelings, and it’s not like I’m happy all the time either, but meds helped me restore balance.

Back to tearfulness as a symptom of depression—I cried multiple times per week if not daily prior to meds, even when in therapy, and whether things were going relatively well or relatively poorly (it all felt rough then). I would say I cry sad tears roughly once every 3 months now? And not because I don’t experience feelings with any intensity—rather, it just doesn’t go from 0 to 100 in moments anymore, so I’m less likely to cry and more likely to have a moment to take a breath and use my coping mechanisms.

28

u/Chronoblivion Apr 13 '26

I had the opposite problem. Depression made me completely numb so I couldn't cry.

15

u/Ok_Nothing_9733 Apr 13 '26

That’s possible too! I just mean for someone who cries often, it’s worth exploring options regarding mental health, they could make things better than one might expect. But I feel you, that is another very real and frustrating outcome of depression, too.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '26

4

u/Ok_Nothing_9733 Apr 13 '26

I would never diagnose on Reddit bc that’s insane but my best friend and sibling has bipolar disorder, which I’ve learned is just a “flavor” of depression that comes with periods of less depression or even feeling pretty good for a while. I am by no means saying this is the case for you, but maybe run this pattern by your trusted doctor or therapist if you’re able.

My therapist was able to help me rule out or rule in bipolar with mood tracking apps over time and discussion of my experiences. If one does indeed have bipolar disorder, there is zero shame in that, but you definitely gotta know about it to get meds that won’t make things worse, and can really make a difference for people.

The last time I saw my sister/bff with bipolar was like a breath of fresh air, because she’s on meds that work for her and is taking them consistently, and it felt like having my sister back! She’s been on meds for depression only that made things much worse, and that’s common for people with bipolar. I hope this comes across as a gentle and helpful idea and not rude advice, but I’m just a believer that the right meds do make all the difference for some of us, myself included 💖

31M and once a year is crazy low.

41

u/LateGameMachines Apr 13 '26

Either life is going really well, or it's bad enough for so long to go completely numb.

12

u/notrylan Apr 13 '26

i'm in neither of those boats but if you're in the latter, I am sorry for the hand life has dealt you and I sincerely am wishing you the best, brother.

5

u/Simsiano Apr 13 '26

How do you know when it's an appropriate moment to cry?

14

u/simonbleu Apr 13 '26

There is no inappropriate one if you actually feel it. Not something you do on purpose

Well not inappropiate for oyu, I mean, dont hold it back, but of course there are definitely situations you dont want to cry on. If someone says "you are hired" then it likely wont leave a good image. If you meet someone for a date and you cry, then they are going to feel like crap, but generally speaking, if you do, then you are not at a point where you should be holding back

10

u/notrylan Apr 13 '26

i've cried when I thought it's stupid to do so, and not cried when I felt I should. it's an involuntary thing. I just think it's interesting how much variability there is when it comes to how much people cry, so I am glad OP posted this.

41M and I think I've cried three times in the past 25 years.

  1. Funeral of my ex-girlfriend.
  2. Funeral of one of my best friends.
  3. Funeral of my step-father.

Nothing else really bothers me that much.

8

u/huabamane Apr 13 '26

I'm 41 and that's pretty much my experience.

34

u/notrylan Apr 13 '26

that is your experience and I don't want to tell you you're wrong for that. But I do think that that is much less crying than the average person, but that isn't to say that you're flawed or something for being obviously very stoic and unemotional.

24

u/IrishPrime Apr 13 '26

I was just struck by once per year being considered very low while I'm approaching once per decade.

I have what they call a "shallow emotional affect."

Upside: I've probably avoided a great deal of trauma and stress throughout my life because most things just don't really bother me.

Downside: It applies to positive emotions, too. The best day of my life is only marginally better than the average day.

7

u/notrylan Apr 13 '26

every experience is relative, i've made myself feel like a relatively minor setback is the worst day of my life, so maybe your relatively stable experience has its upsides?

30M here and I was never really much of a crier in general. That lead to some awful things like my own mother calling me insensitive, as if crying were the only way you could feel emotion.... but on the other hand, I never cried at a funeral either, not human's not for a pet.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/the_ballmer_peak Apr 13 '26

I'm about the same age and was about the same crying frequency from 20-35, but I found that I started feeling teary a lot more often after I had kids.

9

u/simonbleu Apr 13 '26

30M here and honestly if you don't count the chest feeling (no tears but still counts for me) with some movies, usually really tender happy momments, nor tearing up at the dentist (pain. On that aspect I tear up easily. Not just that... sometimes wind hitting my eye a certain way or when I get my blood pressure taken) then I wouldnt consider it unrealistic... honestly, I do not even remember the last time I cried for emotional pain. And I remember my uncle (30s) funeral a couple of years back, and so many bad moments that followed, including finding out my extended family sucks.

I think not everyone shows the same emotions the same way, and that is ok. The only thing that is bad is bottling your feelings, but its not necessarily the case here

I was on SSRIs for about 16 years and just got off them this January

Before them, any particularly beautiful chord in a song or emotionally charged scene movie could make me cry

While on them, crying was maybe a 3 or 4 times a year event

Now that I’ve sorted through a lot in my mental health and I’m back off them, I’ve cried more happy and sad tears in the past three months than probably the past 5 years combined

7

u/notrylan Apr 13 '26

everyone is entitled to feel their feelings in whatever way suits them but personally I am happy with being quick with the happy and sad tears.

3

u/Gamblor14 Apr 13 '26

What do you consider crying? I’ve always wondered if I cry less than the average person or if I’m just not classifying crying the same as others?

Does getting teary eyed by an emotional movie or reading some really sad news count? Or is it just when there’s full, unstoppable tears going on for at least a couple minutes?

4

u/SyriseUnseen Apr 13 '26

For a (healthy) guy? I had the opposite thought, frankly.

brutal mouth if you are seeing the dentist 9 days in succession

17

u/Dentarthurdent73 Apr 13 '26

brutal mouth if you are seeing the dentist 9 days in succession

They weren't necessarily seeing the dentist 9 days in succession. This is just the reasons they cried. They may have just cried multiple times and multiple days over a singular dentist appointment.

Just like they presumably had multiple crying sessions over seeing a cockroach, they didn't necessarily see 3 separate cockroaches.

If you see one.. sorry to tell ya, there’s far more

75

u/Momentarmknm Apr 13 '26

That's true for the little German cockroaches. But the big swinging dick, kamikaze flying around, 2.5 inch monster kind of cockroaches that make people cry are very often just single dudes who came in from the outside. If you live in the South those guys are going to get in your house occasionally, has nothing to do with cleanliness or an infestation.

14

u/lita_elf Apr 13 '26

First time I went to Florida I saw one of those things scurry out of a Taco Bell drive-thru window and fly into the car. First time I ever saw one that size in real life and I swear to god I nearly fainted on the spot LMAO …still ate my beefy crunch burrito and fiesta potatoes though, it was a 14+ hour drive

When you leave, do NOT use cardboard boxes for ANY of your belongings. Get plastic totes to store them in. Roaches love cardboard and you do not want to bring them home.

Are you okay? Like for real. Checking in.

218

u/actuallyserious650 Apr 13 '26

Of course they’re not ok. They used a pie chart to show the number of events per month and then a bar chart to show the proportion of the different causes.

32

u/whatawynn OC: 1 Apr 13 '26

i didn’t know canva could make other kinds of graphs until i’d made 2 graphs 😕

20

u/Mooflz Apr 15 '26

They’re saying it would’ve been better to use a pie graph for your first 2 graphs and the bar graph for the 3rd graph, instead of what you posted. The different graph types would better illustrate your data

3

u/caelyste Apr 15 '26

imo for a quarterly analysis a heatmap would have been really sick, going for one square per calendar day and split by month—to show parts of a whole/proportion, i would go for treemaps instead of pie charts bc it's honestly pretty hard to read pie charts esp if they're not sorted correctly. (pretty sure datawrapper has treemaps though i could be wrong)

the calendar was really nice! for the bar graph i would probably sort from greatest to least and make it horizontal (labels on the y axis) so you can see the words better :) i have also cried about roaches, they get huge and the skittering is awful, op you were so real for that

451

u/whatawynn OC: 1 Apr 13 '26

like maybe crazy to say in wake of the numbers but i think yes 😭 i generally think of myself as a content person, im just sensitive

80

u/Cornbread-chicken Apr 13 '26

Hey I'm same as you. I get extra fragile sometimes and small things can tip me over the edge.

45

u/robot428 Apr 13 '26

Some of us are just criers. It's okay.

Can I handle a bug? Absolutely. Am I going to cry about it? Maybe.

That's our right. If you can't cry about having to handle a roach situation, what is the point of living?

22

u/nostalgiamon OC: 2 Apr 13 '26

My ex cried the other day because I sent her a video of our shared dog looking out the window at the rain/hail. Some people just cry a lot.

Me too! Crowds clapping, singing in a choir did it once... people acting in unison (in non creepy scary ways) makes me feel overwhelming joy sometimes. Oh, crowds of people Christmas shopping... um, its weird.

21

u/dominaxe Apr 13 '26

seeing humans find joy in each other is a good thing to (happy) cry about imo ❤️

u/mrcolortvjr Apr 13 '26

i thought for sure the hockey entry was gonna be Heated Rivalry. that show made me cry so many times

This is like looking at a summary of my own college years hahaha. Glad to see you said you were looking into anxiety meds because that would have helped me a lot ten years ago. If it’s any comfort, from someone much older than you, once your brain finishes developing, everything stops feeling like the end of the world and things like dental emergencies and pests in the house start to be a lot more manageable.

3

u/Red_Chase Apr 15 '26

Also sleeping enough. My god I cried all the time in college and the 3.5 hours of sleep a night definitely was a massive contributing factor

12

u/Deykun Apr 13 '26

I wonder how much your tracking data about crying - and crying that often and systematically, conditions you to cry in situations where a normal reaction wouldn't end that way.

12

u/ralpher1 Apr 13 '26

At least you aren’t crying over love

For real. I might have cried less in my entire adult life than he/she did in a single month.

25

u/house_monkey Apr 13 '26

Try getting a roach

I feel like we are missing some very important information...

The way it was cropped on my phone, I couldn't see the numbers, but to make the graph work, it looked like roughly 2 in Jan, 2 in Feb, and 6 in March. Less wouldn't make those ratios.

I was wondering what could have gone wrong to cry 10 times in 3 months. Hoping you were OK. Then I saw the next graph wasnt 90% and 10%, and I clicked full screen.

Now im really worried.

27

u/Cyraga Apr 13 '26

I wish I could cry more often. It always feels cathartic after. I think I've cried 3 or 4 times in the past 20 years

31

u/cloudcats Apr 13 '26

Maybe you need some roaches.

8

u/m0nstera_deliciosa Apr 13 '26

Same; I think I cry actual tears like once a decade. Usually when bad things happen I just get so mad instead of sad, and sadness seems healthier.

14

u/house_monkey Apr 13 '26

I heard getting a roach helps

8

u/RaGada25 Apr 13 '26

Can you explain ‘ocean’ and ‘old’?

12

u/whatawynn OC: 1 Apr 13 '26

ocean: after like the worst snowiest winter ever i went down south to the beach for spring break and it was just really nice and i was super grateful to be there. positive tears

old: i turn 20 this year

12

u/Jetztinberlin Apr 13 '26

Oh, sweetie. I'm 50. Trust me, you're still a baby! You have most of your life still ahead of you.

7

u/candlebrew Apr 14 '26

as someone turning 30 this year, your life hasn't even really started yet!!! "real" adulthood starts around 27 at the earliest!

How much of a cry are we talkin here? Like tears welled up or wailing or a mix of both?

6

u/BrokkelPiloot Apr 13 '26

Here I am crying once a year at most. :o Maybe we can learn from each other:P

8

u/EarthObjective7616 Apr 13 '26

"March (idk what happened here)"

Maybe we should ask the dentist

26

u/serpentinization Apr 13 '26

A lot of men in these comments are saying things like "I only cry once per year/decade" and in case you didn't know, testosterone literally makes it harder to cry. It inhibits the physical response of tear-forming. So the level of emotion it takes someone with testosterone based hormones to cry can be significantly higher than the level of emotion for someone with estrogen hormones.

I cry probably 2-3 times per week. Sometimes more sometimes less but I am an "easy crier" so if something stressful starts happening my body will just immediately respond with tears, even if I don't necessarily feel that bad about it mentally.

8

u/Muscled_Daddy Apr 13 '26

I am still pretty high on the testosterone charts despite my age because of TRT.

But I am 100% a crier at movies. I went to go see Wicked For Good and was blubbering like mad the last half. My poor husband hates it lol.

But I’ve also noticed him turning into a softy as he gets older too.

Part of me does wonder if you just naturally become a bit of a cry as you get older… I mean, I’ve already lost so many friends and family.

And I now probably only have 15 to 20 years left.

And when I see that in movies… You know, you get overwhelmed.

What’s the “death with a question mark” about?

5

u/Gothic-lit-is-better Apr 13 '26

Get ready for the roach dentist

5

u/skoorrevir Apr 13 '26

wtf these dentists do to you?

5

u/the_3d6 Apr 13 '26

Dentist clearly wins over war. Just saying.

5

u/Grapes-RotMG Apr 13 '26

"old"

Me, too, twin. Me, too.

5

u/Minimum_Ad4771 Apr 13 '26

Cry as many times as you want to, but damn, that's a lot of crying. Look for some stress relief options. I know it's basic Reddit advice, but physical activity and meditation are two things which helped me chill out a bit. Have a good day.

4

u/kr4t0s007 Apr 13 '26

Damn lol I don’t even remember last time I cried was years ago

5

u/Aksds Apr 13 '26

Death?

Like possibly death?

Your choice of colors in your pies is making ME cry

Edit: sorry about the crying and stuff..

5

u/Cautious_Drawer_7771 Apr 13 '26

This person cried more in the shortest month of the year than I have in the last 20 years combined...I'm not sure who is more messed up.

8

u/JuiceJones_34 Apr 13 '26

Damn. That’s a lot of crying. What kind of sad cry are you doing?

I am a 36 year old male, dad of 2 of married 13 years and I “cry” maybe once a week. I get watery eyes and COULD cry if I really wanted to.

Mine are emotional but not sad. Things that remind me of my boys, my wife, the future or a special emotionally deep moment (guess is happy to an extent depending on the moment)

8

u/AceeZ645 Apr 13 '26

Friendly reminder to brush your teeth AT LEAST TWICE a day

5

u/SachielBrasil Apr 13 '26

March: "idk what happened here".

Cavities happened. Brush your teeth people.

I have a replacement artificial tooth. My original tooth opened up like the waters before Moses. It was not fun. Brush your teeth.

Had a roach land on me for the first time in my life just as I was about to sleep. Yeeted the mf across the room and made a huge bonking sound when it landed. Lit the room and it was there, like nothing happened. Fuck that was horrible.

3

u/AwsumO2000 Apr 13 '26

march was a rough month buddy

3

u/Mc_Shine Apr 13 '26

I could do a similar graph for my wife. Although her reasons would almost exclusively be "baby not sleeping".

20

u/Tanerian Apr 13 '26

The reasons for crying make me think "really young", but the quality of the data makes me think "full grown adult"

Underlying mental health issues? (Legit question, not being a dick)

12

u/secretlyaraccoon Apr 13 '26

My guess is college aged woman whose body uses crying as the release for any and all stress. I say this bc I was her as well 10 years ago lol

11

u/kiku8 Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

As a person that also cries multiple times a week. I get it. I also love the ??? Days

Today I cried because I learned that oarfish come to the surface of the ocean when they're about to die.

Edit: Dang ok I'm not saying that me crying at a minimum once a week is normal but some people are claiming they haven't cried in years is also probably not a good thing.

Shit, I’m jealous. Don’t even remember the last time I cried.

3

u/ClareFischer Apr 13 '26

You might like the How We Feel app. I use it a lot and it kind of collects data like this

3

u/xXxL1nKxXx Apr 13 '26

Dentist wanted a combo multiplier!!!

3

u/fistular Apr 13 '26

my god I cry like once every three years and I live in a fog of existential dread

3

u/mufasazapato Apr 13 '26

Idk why but I just busted out laughing looking at the calendar breakout

3

u/Ok_Programmer_1022 Apr 13 '26

Shit, I think I'm color blind

3

u/amora_obscura Apr 13 '26

So I think maybe a pie chart is not a great way to convey this information. A heat map or a bar chart would be better.

Also, I hope you’re feeling better now..

3

u/damnmanthatsmyjam Apr 14 '26

She goes to the dentist and he just throws roaches at her

8

u/Historical-Lie-8963 Apr 13 '26

Terrible use of pie charts

My eyes couldn't roll any harder when I saw crying over a ROACH 3 TIMES IN 1 DAY. And crying over the weather?! The fuck?

18

u/dannycake Apr 13 '26

Yeah wtf is this lol.

Crap data, crap science and an even weirder/sadder premise. If this is real they need assistance with regulation. This is way too reddit pilled.

8

u/Jainelle Apr 13 '26

0 = how many times I've cried in the last year.

11

u/slugator Apr 13 '26

Extremely not beautiful but it is data. Try again.

8

u/MasterPip Apr 13 '26

Do people really cry this much? Im a guy in his 40s and I think I can count on one hand the amount of times I've cried past like 21 years old.

Just never been around someone who cries this much so im curious if this is normal/average or if OP has some mental health crisis going on because this seems like absurdly abnormal. Its like they have no ability to self regulate and deal with minor inconveniences in life. I mean, crying because of a roach? Really?

Idk how OP makes it through a day.

May I be so bold to suggest this strategy in life might not be the most productive one

2

2

This reads like a horror story to me. I do hope you are getting plenty of liquids to replace what you are expelling.

2

u/tamere2k Apr 13 '26

February 15th was hockey? The men’s preliminary games? I get the medal rounds and I’ve cried happy because of hockey this year too so no judgement at all, but the preliminaries?

That is a LOT of crying. I mean seriously, that is a lot of crying.

2

u/Turtyturt7 Apr 13 '26

Do you think that tracking how much you cry makes you cry more? Or does it have no effect? (Or I guess it could make you cry less).
