Hi there, I was born and raised in Fairbanks (but moved outside a couple times always to come back) and finally moved away for good after graduation from West Valley sometime around 1996. I currently live in Homer. Our family lived at 3845 Potter rd off of Becker Ridge (out Rosie Creek rd). When I left the area my mom and brother still lived there and had our old 1971 VW bus there, not running, on the property. The classic Alaskan storage shed.

This bus used to be our home and adventure rig for pretty well my entire life and my best happiest childhood memories involve it. I'm trying to relocate it so I could bring it back to the family. I've tried with admittedly low effort for years just because I had no idea how to accomplish this search and feeling helpless to figure it out has been depressing. But, I thought recently that maybe this vector might help?

The specifics on the van are 1971 VW Bus, Type 2 Campmobile. Distinguishing marks are few but as you can see in this old pic (I'm the kid in center/bottom) it's red with a mid-body white line that was not stock/standard that my mom had it painted after an accident when we lived in Utah. I believe both bumpers were painted white as well as the front emblem also. Near as I can tell it was sold off of the property sometime around 1998.

Any help would be absolutely great.

I drive Uber in Fairbanks, but only a few times a week, so I may not have run into some of you who read this post who use Uber a lot. Mostly, it's pretty great. I have a lot of interesting people I get to meet, some local, some are tourists, and most of the time, if there is any conversation to be had, they are pretty pleasant ones.

Twice in the last week though, I have had people get into my car and immediately start talking about racist shit. I don't even know how it's possible to be so immediately offensive to someone you don't know and who is providing a service to you, but they did it.

For the record, I'm a late 50s scruffy-looking white dude, so I probably look like someone that would love to have racist conversations in my car, but guess what? NO. I also had a bunch of out-of-town USMC members that were all super young in my car today for a ride to North Pole, and they immediately started in with anti-trans and racist talk. Like why? Why isn't that something you can't just keep inside your own damn heads? Trying to be professional and not angry, I didn't mention to them that my wife and I have two beautiful trans daughters, and that what they were saying was very offensive to me specifically and to anyone with a heart, in general.

TLDR: Get in the car, take the Uber ride, talk if you want, but try not to throw your most toxic and shitty ideas at the driver when you first get in.

I would like to have professional photographs taken of me (female) and my partner (male). After being sort of uninspired by the vibes on most couple photographers sites, I realized someone more into artsy and sensual photography would be fun. A couple portraits tame enough for the workdesk, some that get more creative.

Kinda struggling on who to reach out to. Seems like the big boudoir folks don't shoot men/couples. In fact, I realized that finding someone who can bring out the Maplethorpe-Muse in my man might be rather difficult since that's oddly niche in a world of wedding photographers and empowerment boudoir work.

Maybe I'm looking for a photographer who moves about the queer or kink communities?

It's Monday. Summer is winding down. Time to start thinking about doing all of the "getting ready for winter" you've been putting off all season. Time to be filled with existential dread for the cold darkness that will soon enough envelop us all...

So, in the spirit of ignoring that here's a place to mention any sort of event/meeting/whatever that people might not know about and might not warrant it's own post. Hopefully somebody has the something to help you keep procrastinating!

The 12–0 shutout of West Anchorage on Saturday is exactly the response the Patriots needed after their recent one-score loss to Chugiak. They did not let that discouraging result become a skid, and they showed they can win a physical, low-scoring game as well as an explosive one. The West Anchorage result is particularly encouraging because a shutout after allowing 14 points to Chugiak suggests the defense reset well. It also means North Pole has now demonstrated two different identities: a big-play team when the matchup permits it, and a disciplined defensive team when the game becomes tight.

The Patriots now look like a team with a strong floor and a high ceiling. They have an explosive win, a clutch win, and a shutout win; that is a much more complete early-season profile than a team that only piles up points in lopsided games. The Chugiak defeat remains the one blemish, but North Pole absorbed a close loss and responded like a contender.

Winter is nigh...

North Pole Flag Football's 14–9 loss to Chugiak last night is significant because it ends the Patriots’ early-season winning streak and serves as their first real adversity test after their dominant win over West Valley and their close win over Service. However, it is a nonconference-style measuring-stick loss, not a season-ending result—but it could matter later in seeding, rankings, and confidence if the teams are competing for state-positioning. The Mustangs had already faced substantial early competition, including losses to Dimond, South, and a one-point loss to Service. North Pole still has ample opportunity to build a strong record and make a strong postseason run, but it now needs to treat the rest of its schedule as consequential—particularly any games against other Anchorage-area contenders. A rematch, if it occurs in postseason play, would also carry an obvious revenge and confidence storyline.

Just curious about how much it costs to get fuel delivered before the winter hits, who did you use and did they charge out the butt for it?

Anyone have any favorites?

North Pole High School flag football player Jade Skipps scored five TDs and amassed an eye-popping 303 all-purpose yards in a 67-0 victory over West Valley to garner our Alaska Athlete of the Week honors.

Skipps, a multi-sport dynamo, caught three touchdown receptions, ran one in, and scored on a 37-yard interception return on defense.

The senior racked up 102 yards receiving, 85 on punt returns, 79 running the ball, and 37 on her pick six.

Skipps was the MaxPreps Alaska Player of the Year her sophomore year, when she led the nation in rushing with 3,081 yards to go with 21 yards. Last season, she was named a MaxPreps All-American honorable mention.

The Patriots have moved up to 2-0 for the season and have shown that their 67-0 opening night performance against West Valley was not a mis-match. They won a tight game Thursday night against an established Anchorage opponent. Service entered the game 4–4 and had already played eight games, including a prior three-game winning streak. North Pole, by contrast, was only in its second game of the season. Patriots executed enough on offense, defense, and late-game situational football to survive a one-score contest.

North Pole’s ability to beat Service at all—especially by such a narrow margin—suggests the Patriots have both high-end playmaking and the resilience needed for success in their regular and postseason games.

Hi fellow mortal Toyo warriors. I've got an interesting situation with a stove I haven't been able to solve and am looking for any advice.

I have two identical cabins, not even 100' apart, each with a brand new Toyo 734 last fall. My second cabin, which has a tenant, has had issues with the gasket on the top of the burn chamber cracking across two stoves. There was previously a 73 in there from 2012-2014 era that had 8-10 gaskets crack across the last few years I've owned these cabins. So last fall I replaced that stove, and the old Monitor in my cabin with new 734s. The Toyo in my cabin, and previously a Monitor, have never had an issue. Last week, the gasket cracked on the brand new one on one of the first cycles of the fall in my tenant's cabin. Here's everything I know:

• Fuel for the impacted Toyo is delivered by sourdough and I've replaced the filter annually and right when the new stove was installed last fall.
• Both gravity fed, no fuel pumps or anything like that. I did replace the copper fuel line on my cabin last year and not on the impacted one.
• The stove was leveled when installed, though the cabins aren't perfectly level.
• The flue was also replaced with the new stove.
• My tenant runs their stove more often than I run mine, starts earlier in the season, and keeps the cabin a bit warmer.
• Everything else should be relatively equal in terms of humidity, pressures, vents, etc. as the cabins and setups are more or less identical.

Our working hypothesis is that there is some uncombusted fuel or vapor left behind when it shuts down that when the stove ignites that residual explodes or pops and blows the gasket. I don't remember all of the dates the gasket has blown but I don't recall having emergencies at -40 when the stoves are on virtually all of the time.

The former impacted 73 stove was serviced by three of the local Toyo service teams before I gave up last fall.

Anyone experienced this or have any recommendations on what I should do?

Hey everyone,
I’ve lived in Fairbanks for the last 8 years. But I just moved into my first dry cabin. It has a Toyo 530 series.

I am worried about what would happen if I lost power at any point in the winter. I live off Chena Pump, so I don’t know how frequent power outages are here. I used to live on the other side of town near Ft Wainwright and we didn’t get them very often at all. Maybe a handful of times over the years.

Just to be safe, I want to get some kind of portable generator just to run the Toyo. I don’t really care about anything else running during a power outage. I just worry about keeping the place warm in the dead of winter.

I’ve never worked with a Toyo before either so any general tips would be welcomed as well!

With all the beef recalls and food weirdness lately, myself and some family members were looking into doing a local cowshare for beef. Ideally it would have been moose or caribou but we cant find anyone with enough to spare. Has anyone done a local cowshare? We would probably each want to do a 1/8th share. Any hints or tips or good experiences with a local farm?
