General Small drama afternoon: people are just now discovering that NTE's dating system only allows you to date women (making it probably the first Chinese yuri gacha)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It's been known in China for a while, since the last beta (in February), but just today a video by iYatoOfficial is getting viral on Twitter and lots of posts gathering over 100k likes in total have brought it to the general public's attention that in NTE you can't date men, but you can date women as female MC.

It's actually a bit of a flirty friendship, but very clearly intended to be seen as dating since the interactions are a bit too intimate. You can set up to 5 girls to date.

While it flew over my head in February (even thought I often browse xhs and bilibili) due to its neutral reception, the negative reception today is really hard to ignore bc it's everywhere if you follow any gacha fanpage, with several reposts and retweets bashing it (and a couple praising it as well).

This is making some people a bit bitter, specially because the info comes to the public attention a week after Mongil's announcement that they won't release more male characters after releasing the game with a small amount of them (https://www.reddit.com/r/gachagaming/s/Fkub1W2Yyh).

Well, at least they aren't baiting their players into playing a game that only caters to male players (and bi/lesbian women, even if by accident and it ends up being patched in the future).

Probably to hit certain internal benchmarks for launch, ToF did the exact same thing.Ā

132

u/SuperDementio Apr 19 '26

So all men are DEI hires?!

26

u/kaori_cicak990 Apr 19 '26

Lol we got our asian version of DEI hires

8

u/HybridTheory2000 Apr 19 '26

"Why do you call yourself a minority?"

"... Because I'm a man."

9

u/Panzaro Apr 19 '26

Practically a web novel about a guy getting reincarnated into a waifu gacha game and males are all low rarity shitters.

10

u/davidpain1985 Apr 19 '26

It might work 5 years ago but now, not so much…

8

u/Hakul Apr 19 '26

ToF still adds 1 male character per major version, so it's not just for launch.

3

u/GraveXNull Apr 19 '26

Tof, Wuwa and recently Mongil...

89

u/Kinoris Apr 18 '26

To bait normies to promote the game for free so more of the target audience can see it and hop into it and spend on it as well

u/Davidsda Apr 18 '26

"Hoyo does thing and Hoyo makes lots of money, therefore we should do thing" - Some exec

Of course the they never copy Hoyo's production budget, because that costs money.

54

u/Choowkee Apr 19 '26

???

Despite the ration favoring females, HSR and Genshin both have steady additions of male characters.

WuWa has a worse male:female ratio than Genshin.

12

u/kidanokun Apr 19 '26

and then there's ZZZ

1

u/AdAcrobatic371 Apr 19 '26

How is ZZZ now? I heard it had better ratio and well written males a year ago.Ā

15

u/Ok-Will-168 Apr 19 '26

zzz treat male character good in term of marketing, however none of them have really impact in story or leader of faction, and there power feel clunky if you compared to Void hunter (what a concidence all female for now). Can said it not bad treatment, but never a priority unit.

3

u/Kir-chan HSR | Arknights beginner Apr 19 '26

A bunch of them are faceless robots, furries or actual animals too. Don't get me wrong, the characters are cool as design diversity reps, but they're clearly not designed for the same straight female audience Luuk, Flins and Dan Heng are. I think the last one they tried marketing to women was Hugo.

4

u/kidanokun Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

There's already a 7th female after the last male... But i dunno much either, i haven't touched the game since when there was just 2 yet

2

u/UwUSamaSanChan Apr 19 '26

From who??? We had to wait 7 banners for 2 guys (one of which was free) and it's only gotten worse. The last dude has the worst kit and investment among the 5 stars and the shortest banner in the game.

It has nothing to do with budget. It has everything to do with history, genre, and reputation.

Unlike most AAA gacha developers, Mihoyo has a large female audience. This is due to a number of factors - from their history as a yuri company (GGZ & Honkai Impact 3rd), to their deliberate choice to go with a gender neutral aesthetic & "fairy tale fantasy" vibe in Genshin, to their commitment to supporting both male & female banners through hell & high water, to their continued commitment to female-targeting "cozy" games (e.g. Petite Planet, Honkai Nexus Anima), they have earned the reputation of being a female friendly company and so are able to effectively deploy the duo genders strategy.

By contrast, their main competitors - Hotta, Kuro, and Hypergryph - have always been more male-focused. For Hotta and Kuro that was obvious just from the banners release ratio (~10% for both). With Hypergryph, it might seem at first that Ark Knights classic released a lot of male characters, but in actuality from a sample of Tik Tok followers their male-to-female ratio was also something like 75-25. So when it came time for End Field, where the stakes were higher & characters took more resources to make, they too went with the "1 out of 9 limited characters is male" strategy, not surprisingly.

Among big budget gacha developers, Mihoyo should be seen as an exception to the rule. Cultivating a mostly balanced gender ratio is not easy and is rarely what happens naturally with action-oriented games, which intrinsically have a higher male to female ratio.

You can't just "copy" Mihoyo's production quality here. To have a true 50/50 gender audience, the game needs to be designed in a certain way from the start.

u/TetraNeuron Apr 19 '26

You can also see in the dev livestreams Hoyo actually employs women whereas the other studios are sausage-fests

3

u/draconic_tongue Apr 19 '26

pretty sure women work at kuro and they have an insane amount of fanart done by women. the quality delta compared to genshin fanart is pretty big, even though they got like 1/5th the amount. btw quality delta in this case refers to artists that put a lot of effort into their work (which tends to be women, usually) and don't just spam 1girl white_background which is what you'd expect from games like wuthering waves if you looked at the sentiment of this sub

Also devs you would think would be the biggest sausage fests like azur lane/azur promilia not only have women employees but the ceo is one as well.

does that make them pickme employees

14

u/Augustus3000 Apr 19 '26

It’s also worth noting that Hoyo has only been doubling down on this approach. For Honkai: Star Rail, they gave male characters like Ashveil and Dan Heng: Permansor Terrae ASMR videos (Phainon also got to narrate a date like video). For Genshin, they emphasized Flins’s gentlemanly side to the point that it became an essential part of his character. Hoyo also does a good job of having these male characters interact extensively over numerous quests and events in ways that are popular with female audiences as well (same goes for many pairings of women within the games of course). And in ZZZ with its often date-like Trust Events and Quality Time, interactions are often similar regardless of whether you pick the male or female MC.

3

u/Kir-chan HSR | Arknights beginner Apr 19 '26

For Honkai: Star Rail, they gave male characters like Ashveil and Dan Heng: Permansor Terrae ASMR videos (Phainon also got to narrate a date like video).

Small correction in that several characters get this, not just male characters. The only unusual thing is that they only translate the male character ones to the EN youtube channel, god knows why.

3

u/MaleficentEcho2669 GI / AG / PtN / LC / AK Apr 19 '26

Nowadays genshin's female to male ratio is more like 66-33.

3

u/planetarial P5X(KR)/IN/Prosekai(JP) Future: Petit Planet/Silent Whispers Apr 19 '26

Hoyo also has their own otome game although it definitely feels like the middle child

9

u/JudgmentAlarming977 Apr 19 '26

Major delusion going on. GGZ and hi3 both have like 80% male playerbase these are not why hoyo got a more balanced playerbase. They launched during covid, was the first 3d open world gacha, and had more balanced ratio.

-4

u/Davidsda Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

You cant claim it has nothing to do with budget.

Hoyo has the best models, the best animations, the best art, and the best music. Even people who don't like their games as a whole will admit that.

And they have those things because they're willing to invest lots of money.

Hoyo has an easier time getting a more balanced gender ratio because their production value allows them to pull from the general gaming audience rather than just people that play weird JPG collectors.

27

u/Bobson567 Apr 19 '26

Hoyo has the best models, the best animations

Many will strongly disagree

17

u/rzrmaster FGO / Nikke Apr 19 '26

I fully disagree, I dont know where you got everybody thought hoyo is the best at everything lols, if everyone thought that then everyone would play their games haha.

Get a grip with reality mate.

3

u/Davidsda Apr 19 '26

I didn't say everything or everyone. And there's a difference between something matching a personal preference and being technically high quality...

I would personally describe genshin as a slog with annoying characters, tedious gameplay, and awful writing.

But that doesn't prevent me from acknowledging they make high quality art.

-3

u/WhyHowForWhat Apr 19 '26

Best model but all they can make nowadays are variation of humanoid character not straying away from female children, medium female, medium male, tall female, and tall male without any variance in looks like how someone when pass a certain age will look old. All of them always looks skinny and never stray too further from that. Varessa is just tweaked from the base medium model. Varka is just a tweaked high model. No variance, no creativity, only repetitive bs. Also ffs more than 5 years and still no child male model. Wtf.

Best model? More like recycled model.

1

u/Cintax Apr 19 '26

Not that Hoyo deserves defending or anything, but literally the banners running right now are both guys, one of which is a new character.

-29

u/Atzumo Apr 18 '26

I sure fucking hope they don't copy hoyo budget, their games look cheap as shit, and play even worse. Cut to HSR ONE HOUR scene with a static background, not even live2D, just a static image. Lets not even get into the black screen white text stuff.

12

u/HakaYonder Apr 19 '26

I don't think it has anything to do with budget tbh. HI3 which is older has (partially) stopped doing story in its old VN format, having characters in the world instead with more modern text boxes, and they have more animation variety than HSR despite earning much less.

They even make animations that are used a single time, like this one, that are just never seen again.

I really think the HSR team is just fine with the story presentation as it is.

14

u/LmaoXD98 Apr 19 '26

Lol, at least its playable in all the medium its available in, and not run 15 FPS in literaly high end phone ON MENU UI and constant FPS drop from 60 to 20 in high end PC.

Performance optimization>>>>Presentation.

Mainstream baiting, it worked on WuWa so...

going on typical male MC + all female cast wont attract much mainstream attention and will get immediately shot down as a "gooner weeb game" and get avoided by normies like NIKKE for example, unless it's Uma Musume which is still kind of one (has a lot of ML enabling and the fanbase pushes the Umawife Umapyoi agenda)

130

u/Rayuzx Apr 18 '26

I think Uma Musume gets away with it because it's not overtly sexual about it ala Nikke, Snowbreak, Horizon Walker, etc.

2

u/fbiguy22 Apr 19 '26

Nikke has a larger proportion of female players than people might expect. I’ve seen surveys with results as high as 25%, but those were in Asian countries. Globally it’s probably lower. Still higher than the numbers I’ve seen for Uma, though.

1

u/drafan5 Apr 30 '26

That and explict fan art of the characters are strictly forbidden, part of which is because some of the horses these girls are based on are owned by Yakuza.

59

u/Falsus Granblue Fantasy Apr 18 '26

You can pick your gender in Umamusume and the characters reflect that. Calling you ''Big sister'' instead of ''Big brother'' as an example.

And there is a whole lot of yuri in the game also.

4

u/kidanokun Apr 19 '26

you can also pick gender on WuWa and NTE tho, but they're still harem ML regardless

1

u/AdLife589 Apr 19 '26

ML is for ?

-2

u/draconic_tongue Apr 19 '26

mid L

W is when it's girl player with guys or girls only

1

u/AdLife589 Apr 19 '26

But how is a ml only game if in the game both male and female rover are canon are use in promo ecc at the same level ?

-12

u/ReverseRt Apr 18 '26

There's not yuri in the game, all the characters are after their Trainer

41

u/RUS12389 Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

It's not true. Some Umas aren't after the trainer and have more platonic relationship.
Also, there's some legit Uma x Uma shipping done by the game, like recent ballroom event in JP, with marriage proposal between Bakushin and North Flight. And also far more shipping between Uma x Uma by official anime.
Uma Musume caters to both trainer x Uma and Uma x Uma. Some Umas are very into their trainer, like Golshi and Super Creek. Some aren't that much into the trainer, like Bakushin and Shakur (atleast from what I read from their dialogue).

17

u/Sero8 Apr 18 '26
  1. I dont think thats true
  2. The trainer can be a woman

2

u/draconic_tongue Apr 19 '26

2nd point supports what he said

11

u/CulturalGolf1135 Apr 19 '26

I don't think that's true, I mean the latest ball room event have Bakushin confessing her love to North Flight. Or ball room event in general always seem like a Yuri shipping fest.

-6

u/ReverseRt Apr 19 '26

"confessing her love"
Girls can't be rivals anymore without tourists calling them gay, also you should only take the official japanese version as real.

They censored and changed a lot of dialogues where the umas actually confess to the player.

Like Rudolf's using the whole "the moon is beautyful this night" romantic phrase with (You). The Global version is unironically localization bullshit

20

u/Falsus Granblue Fantasy Apr 19 '26

Bruh, she went on her knees, they exchanged brooches, said to always be there and so on. If that isn't a proposal I don't know.

6

u/RUS12389 Apr 19 '26

Imagine seeing this and thinking it's just 'friendship'. Game does both yuri shipping Uma x Uma and trainer shipping. Not all Umas are in love with trainer.

17

u/MycologistBoth2610 Apr 18 '26

You never played the game have you there are ton of Yuri in uma musume

1

u/draconic_tongue Apr 19 '26

ton is an overstatement, maybe in the western community

-11

u/ReverseRt Apr 18 '26

Been playing the game since JP dropped, and I've been following Umamusume since 2016.

What you call yuri, is what anyone who didn't discovered anime in pandemic call it CGDCT.

7

u/MycologistBoth2610 Apr 18 '26

Then saying there’s no Yuri when the trainers can also be girls is crazy especially when the evens and the uma own stories have them doing a lot of blushing around each other and stuff just cause you ignore everything doesn’t means there’s no Yuri and thy only like there trainers is crazy if you played it since 2016 like you said

-3

u/kidanokun Apr 19 '26

The Umas are just MC-sexual like any other gacha games waifus... and the fanbase collectively agreed the trainer is male, just look at all those T-faced ass "can be female btw"Ā dudes

0

u/MycologistBoth2610 Apr 19 '26

No their ain’t and that’s also not true the reason they dude that cause the trainers can be both male and female you also never played uma musume

2

u/kidanokun Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

Me an ex player tho, i dropped the game coz MANT burnout... Yea, there's a choice, but that's pretty much where the female self-insert trainer existence ends...Ā

yeah, every time i see a rare female trainer fanwork, it's just them getting remembered... at least female trainers do exists as NPC or in adaptationsĀ

-10

u/ReverseRt Apr 19 '26

"B-but yuri is real because trainer can be female" But you whole argument is that they're gay towards others umas.

I love how you move the goalpost pretty quickly.

And if you seriously consider girls being cute and acting almost like sisters to be gay, then you probably think 100% of anime is yuri. Really speaks how you don't know nothing about otaku culture or anime culture in general.

And I've never said I played since 2016. The game didn't existed back then. But the IP was announced at that time.

5

u/MycologistBoth2610 Apr 19 '26

Yes cause saying all the trainers are male and that all the uma only like the trainers when their own anime mangas even the game itself prove you wrong and I know the anime isn’t 100% Yuri you dunce nice knowing you speaking of anything anime culture is hilarious and you only thinking they only doing that as sisters when saying they only like their trainers says a lot about you

1

u/RUS12389 Apr 19 '26

Especially with Sheval Grand in Season 3 confessing her love to Kitasan mid-race.

1

u/Arachnofiend Apr 19 '26

Kind of person who thinks Yuru Yuri doesn't have any Yuri in it lol

19

u/SuperSexo569 Apr 18 '26

Thankfully Nikke is doing pretty well regardless of what normies think, I hope this eventually make these companies see that there is a large public for these games and just be straightforward about their premise

6

u/Hakul Apr 19 '26

Hard to not do well when all your characters are likely AI generated and they bring in pure profit with nearly zero investment, just gotta write another sad story for the character.

1

u/SuperSexo569 Apr 19 '26

I'm sorry but I don't think you've played Nikke, and tbh the same could be said for a lot of these famous gacha games (Except for the ai shit, which indeed suck).

3

u/Hakul Apr 19 '26

The CEO of Shift Up has spent literal years praising AI and posting AI slop on social media, there's zero chance they don't use it for Nikke, Nikke models are simple enough that they can sneak in AI-generated models and none of you would realize.

1

u/SuperSexo569 Apr 19 '26

brother I didn't said they don't use AI. Idk if the problem is my english but I tried to say that a lot of gacha games also suffer from the things you wrote, and that I also don't like at all how they use AI in Nikke

-4

u/Introverted_male Apr 19 '26

Haha. Way better hearing paimon yapping and run errands in the story quests instead of telling the story. The characters are just products to sell who loses all relevance in the story once their arc is done while in Nikke characters do appear in often and have more relevance than when they debuted.

Also not all stories are just sad. I guess you never played the game. The recent event was so good with its galge like various endings. Devs know their audience and did such a based move by pulling a full on heterosexual romance in the high 2026. And it was super rewarding. Just gotta say Arcana is the best girl.

0

u/GraveXNull Apr 19 '26

I think you confused Genshin with Wuwa.

3

u/Vokoca Apr 19 '26

I think the difference with Uma Musume is that it focuses way more on relationships the characters have with each other than relationships with the player self insert, which only really come into the forefront in the raising scenarios.

As a result it feels quite different from stories that follow the ML format.

Husbando lovers spend money, free promotion and publishers hope to get some of that.

But because they don't do much with them, it doesn't go anywhere and husbando fans quit (if they believed in the first place).

Meanwhile something like Genshin does commit and gets the benefits - even in Natlan, which had least of them, big chunk of events had prominent/lead male characters: Ororon with scrolls, Ifa and Saurians, Fontaine (Natlan's trio, Wrio and Neuvi), Paralogism and summer event being Bennett's SQ.

-37

u/zodiac8458 Apr 19 '26

The big fujos spend money wrong. For example the Caleb stans from lads:

They rent out hotels and billboards. This money isn't going to the devs.

They only go for caleb. So devs have no incentive to make their game better, release new characters, etc as long as they throw a bone every now and then.

In contrast, the average waifu player will whale in game, on official merch, and are also promiscuous so they will whale on new waifus and also gamers that care about the game, at least somewhat

41

u/Beelzebuuuuub3 Genshin/HSR/Epic7 Apr 19 '26

well lads is still one of the leading mobile games in china soooo:/ they consistently top the charts every month, so saying they dont spend money on the game is wrong.

the gundam director in the 90s already acknowledged young women as a core audience and why the gundam series became successful. attracting them gives you a high chance of success, its one of the reasons why JJK even blew up in the first place, it was heavily underrated when it first released but the gojo simps were so loud. and why a lot of shounen especially sports are fruity in a way.

also fujos (or people that likes male characters in general) spends more on merch.

-10

u/JuggernautNo2064 Apr 19 '26

ONE GAME is high on mobile, facing tons of waifu dominated games

and that one game has no PC or console playerbase meaning that in reality that ONE big game might not even be in the top 10 vs either pvp games or waifu games

but SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE the reddit loser that think they represent the playerbase know better than those exec that have the data lol

women mostly spend on candycrush type games, not gachas

9

u/planetarial P5X(KR)/IN/Prosekai(JP) Future: Petit Planet/Silent Whispers Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

Have you looked at the other husbando only games? They are low budget and low quality, girls don’t want to play low quality games so the sales reflect that. Even now new/upcoming husbando games like Reign of Nightfall and Zero Wakes look pretty bad for current year. LADS is the only one that has good quality.

Even then other husbando gachas have had decent success like Twisted Wonderland and Enstars.

You can also look outside the gacha space

The Sims is one of the best selling franchises of all time and its primarily played by women and inZoI, the closest thing it has to competition is doing very well too.

Tales of games notoriously have large female fanbases and this can be seen in that most of the merch is made for them.

In the visual novel space, some of the best selling VNs are Ace Attorney ones (notable for having a large female fanbase), otome VN localizations went from a few to hundreds in the past decade because they realized they sell well, and in more niche spaces like JASTs store the BL/yaoi VNs outsell the galge ones.

As Infold’s CEO said ā€œIts not that women don't like to play games, but there are no good games for women to play."

12

u/Beelzebuuuuub3 Genshin/HSR/Epic7 Apr 19 '26

The fact their fans can spend so much on birthdays, should already prove the game is a mega hit. Mobile gaming is massive in china, largest revenue comes from mobile for the general including multi platform games. It being mobile only doesn't make it smaller in rankings.

-6

u/JuggernautNo2064 Apr 19 '26

endfield proved you so wrong, made 30 M according to sensor tower while it made 170+ according to other sources, even CZN made 11 M on mobile while devs confirmed it made over 30 total at around the same time

you undersestimate vastly PC and console revenue lol, ZZZ is topping PS5 chart quite often too

i'd bet ZZZ in fact make more money in total than LADS

2

u/NoKameron Apr 21 '26

Yeah, and also ZZZ cost MUCH more to develop) and LADS have their own shop too, and top ups there are moro convenient... and LADS also sell tonns and tonns of merch, guess what, devs getting money from this too... Nah, while ZZZ has more in peaks, LADS much more stable and never fall of, so im sure if we will look at gain per year, LADS bring more money to devs than ZZZ)

22

u/Ok-Will-168 Apr 19 '26

Female player is most loudest part fandom, even when they are small amount, if game can use that a game always get ā€œheatā€, that why no matter how good zzz and ww is, they can never beat a fame of GI, only HSR which use same structure can get that high. And in modern market, fame and heat can really earn money, alot money.

18

u/some_random_weeb_88 Apr 18 '26

To bait people for money.

7

u/Chadworth_5401 Apr 19 '26

They use them for marketing so that the wider audience don't think the game is one of those gooner games pandering to "incels" (because some people see a game with no males and assume it's one of those games like Snowbreak and avoid it)

Also they use males for brand collabs, like how you see Kuro using the male characters in WuWa in brand collabs all dressed in casual wear. That's it, that's literally why males exist in these games and for no other reason.

3

u/MaleficentEcho2669 GI / AG / PtN / LC / AK Apr 19 '26

It's their version of DEI quotas.

4

u/Superb_Walrus3134 Apr 19 '26

Because they're cowards. They don't put forth the effort to make them interesting and they don't remove all together. They've chosen the weak middle ground

33

u/EtadanikM Apr 18 '26

Nobody is answering you seriously so I will.

Every "AAA" gacha game has a % of players who are female. Take WuWa, as an example. WuWa's estimated gender ratio is something like 85% male / 15% female. Multiplied by the number of players, it's not an insignificant population, and consequently developers "try" to keep them around through inserting some female-targeting characters & story lines, once in a while.

Hence Luuk, for example, was a female-targeting character release in WuWa. You know this because camera angles in Luuk's trailers & story are designed with the female gaze in mind, and not the male gaze - with shots lingering on his lips, eyes, crouch, etc. Which is definitely not something you'd do for a straight male gaze.

Why the 15% audience remains despite 90% of the character releases being female and made for the male gaze, who knows? But they exist, and so companies choose not to ignore them.

Of course, 15% of the audience can never match 85% of the audience in spending so female audience-targeting banners are always among the lowest in revenue. That's why they rarely get made. But since they do still make money and do still want to retain the 15% or so female population that they have, they keep at it.

NTE and End Field are doing the same thing.

36

u/Beelzebuuuuub3 Genshin/HSR/Epic7 Apr 19 '26

not being able the date the men is kinda just ignoring that 15%, 15% of let's say 30 million players is a lot of women

women will stick to the 1 or 2 guys that they like and the rest they wont even pull

Games like Genshin and HSR disprove this, women will pull for multiple guys given the game is an actual hero collector rpg with decent resource distribution and not a dating sim with heavy progression bottlenecks that railroad you into one or two guys.Ā

10

I can tell that only a game that have fair treatment for male character and have nice story like a9, gi, hsr… can sell male character that sick, otherwise nope. And it reflect to gender ratio, which reflect back to revenue again, it a circle is fucking hard to break if you start it.

Because most people still prefer classic male + female stuff

They try to hit a bit on the female playerbase, which is why men are bait and rarely get a good treatment
