General Extreme Chinese players send cow dung, funeral chrysanthemums, curse banners, and ritual items to Papergames/Infold office as Love and Deepspace controversy escalates. LADS Chinese social media accounts have reportedly lost around 1 million followers

Love and Deepspace has been facing one of its biggest controversies after the official reveal of its sixth male love interst, Ao Yin/Valko. Since the teaser was released, the game's official Chinese social media accounts have reportedly lost around 1 million followers across platforms.

The controversy has also drawn attention from Beijing Daily, which published a commentary arguing that the backlash reflects a growing crisis of trust between Papergames and its core player base.

The backlash has also spread offline.

As part of Ao Yin's promotional campaign, Papergames installed a giant Valko wolf-print display and a large themed balloon outside its office.

According to reports circulating on Chinese social media, some extreme players placed cow dung inside the company's delivery lockers, with visitors claiming they could smell the odor.

Processing img s8sk5zyjv1ah1...

Others left white and yellow chrysanthemums, curse banners, glutinous rice, and pomelo leaves around the promotional display outside the building. Some visitors also posed outside the office while making middle-finger gestures for photos.

In modern Chinese culture, white and yellow chrysanthemums are closely associated with funerals, mourning, and paying respects to the deceased. Sending these flowers to a person or company can be interpreted as wishing death upon the recipient.

Meanwhile, glutinous rice and pomelo leaves are traditional folk items used in spiritual cleansing rituals to ward off evil spirits. Some protesters used them sarcastically to suggest that Papergames had been "possessed" after introducing the new character and need to ward off this new evil spirit.

One protester also reportedly delivered a banner reading "The new male lead is a wild boar" to the company's office and later claimed that Papergames threatened to call the police. Online, some players also joked about destroying the giant Valko balloon, although there is no evidence that anyone actually attempted to do so (now).

Following the protests, Papergames reportedly increased security around its headquarters. While visitors were previously allowed to enter the building to take photos, recent reports claim that public access has become more restricted, particularly to prevent provocative photos or obscene gestures inside the office.

According to the article by Beijing Daily, the issue goes far beyond Ao Yin's appearance. While some players criticized his more Westernized character design, the main source of frustration is that many longtime players feel the existing five love interests have been neglected. Main storylines of a love interest have reportedly gone over 500 days without updates. Many fans believe the company's resources have been redirected toward introducing a new character instead of continuing content for the existing cast.

Beijing Daily noted that Papergames' global expansion strategy is commercially understandable—Love and Deepspace has seen strong overseas revenue growth—but argued that otome games rely on a "trust economy." Players invest not only money, but also years of emotional attachment. When that trust is damaged, commercial success alone cannot easily repair it. According to the editorial, Ao Yin became the catalyst for frustrations that had been building for years rather than the sole cause of the controversy.

Papergames issues a midnight apology

At around 12:00-1:00 a.m. (China time) on June 27-28, Papergames released an official statement responding to the backlash.

The company stated that:

  • Ao Yin (Valko) will remain the sixth male lead.
  • The main story updates for Caleb and Sylus are currently in development.
  • All players will receive compensation consisting of 10 Limited Wish Tickets and 10 Standard Wish Tickets (20 pulls total).

However, Beijing Daily published a second commentary shortly afterward titled "Six Questions for Love and Deep Space."

The article argued that the statement failed to answer several key concerns, including:

  • Where was the apology?
  • Why did the company only respond after millions of comments and tens of thousands of complaints?
  • Was the 20-pull compensation a genuine apology or simply an attempt to reduce player loss?
  • How will Papergames fulfill its promise not to neglect existing characters?
  • Has the company truly changed its attitude, or is it merely responding to public pressure?

The editorial concluded that the controversy is no longer just about Ao Yin, but about whether paying players can still trust that their time, money, and emotional investment will be respected, but about whether paying players can still trust that their time, money, and emotional investment will be respected.

Processing img tq4cd4p4w1ah1...

Ao Yin is scheduled to officially release on July 9, and his performance may determine whether this controversy has a lasting impact. However, many observers believe the situation has already become about more than a single character—it reflects years of accumulated frustration over story updates, resource allocation, and communication between Papergames and its longtime player base.

I'm always impressed by the intensity of Korea / China gachadrama.

u/AntonioS3 Genshin Impact, Pokemon Masters EX Jun 28 '26

Sometimes it gets creepy though like this drama, I worry they might go after the devs... there's so much parasocialism here.

448

u/Equivalent_Ad_5860 Jun 28 '26

It also doesn't help this game pretty much encourage  parasocialism than the more general gacha game. Well they dig their own grave tbh

u/YellowAppleCinema Jun 28 '26

It would be funny if the game shuts down because of this, these female players don't realize how good they have it.

LADS has all types of oral sex, simulated sex, showering together with characters, groping the character in sexual ways, and so on.

If that game had even a single female character you could do these things with, it would immediately get mass reported until it gets censored or taken down entirely. I believe the phrase is these players are "eating good" with the amount of hyper-sexual stuff you can do to the male characters.

u/Xarxyc GFL2, Morimens. Jun 28 '26

The joke about censoring woman's nipples with man's is no longer looking like a joke, innit?

63

u/YellowAppleCinema Jun 28 '26

I mean, you can take it way further than that in 2026. Think about Thor Love And Thunder: Thor gets stripped completely naked, against his will with no consent in front of a huge audience, and the camera literally zooms into his pecs, his butt, everything.

The double standard is more like a triple standard at this point, men get sexualized all the time in ways that hasn't happened to any woman in over 40 years. It's weird because on one hand, we keep on being told "don't sexualize others"... but then you look at what happens to men in media

33

u/Xarxyc GFL2, Morimens. Jun 28 '26

40 years is too much. Women were sexualised in 1980-s and 90-s quite a lot compared to now. Even early 2000-s

But I can agree that while sexualisation of women was toned down over time, that of men hasn't changed.

-10

u/YellowAppleCinema Jun 28 '26

1980 was 46 years ago, but yeah I agree, that's why I said 40 years ago.

And while you're correct that women were sexualized in the 2000s, I couldn't think of a single time a woman was treated like Chris Hemsworth was treated in Thor Love And Thunder from 2022. Non-consensually stripped naked, camera zooming into all his private parts, and its played off as a joke.

The actor himself even said he was "extremely uncomfortable" and did NOT want to do the scene but was repeatedly asked into it.

I don't think anything like that happened to any woman actor in the past 40 years, but again, correct me if I am wrong. And since this happened in 2022, imagine if this had been done to a woman? There would be lawsuits, the movie wouldve gotten cancelled, there wouldve been a massive uproar and drama.

But it happened to a man, and nobody seemed bothered. You can even easily look up the scene by typing "naked thor" into youtube. And once again if this had been done to a woman, there would be NO WAY that you could simply find it on youtube (also jesus christ it has 50 million views on youtube, what the fck)

41

u/Xarxyc GFL2, Morimens. Jun 28 '26

Look up music clips from 2000-s. Plenty of that there.

17

u/TYGeelo CZN | ZZZ | SwordxStaff | Battle Cats Jun 28 '26

😂 you literally just explained how the porn women is for most women without realizing it, yet there's no major outcry to "cancel" the industry.

34

u/nanimeanswhat Jun 28 '26

You'd maybe wanna check out Euphoria if you want a recent example. Women are still highly sexualised in media. It has eased compared to the past but that's only because the women revolted against sexual harrassment in the workplace during the MeToo movement. So many women were coerced into doing things that they are uncomfortable with. I suggest you to do a research about the movement and read victim testimonies starting with Harvey Weinstein himself.

I suggest you look into Britney Spears' life as well. It's hella creepy what she has gone through.

8

u/YellowAppleCinema Jun 28 '26

I didnt see Euphoria, does it have a scene with a woman being stripped naked against her will, while the camera zooms into her privates?

Since thats what happened in thor

American pie and other teen comedies. But I do agree with your thesis

26

u/CulturalGolf1135 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Dude there's several women full frontal shot exist across several media and they certainly more then one shot of thor being stripped naked, what is this argument?

Not to mention the Thor scenes that you're talking about is censored and the dude was never even naked since he's just wearing a skin colored shorts.

Edit: this guy point is completely nonsense as he conveniently ignore the myriad of female sexualization across all type of media, over exaggerating or straight up lying about the facts and the way people upvoting it, is concerning and need a reality check.

Historically women have always been more sexualized, though there's some truth of them being less nowadays, they're still make up the majority of the media, hell it's literally the Staples of a gacha games female design.

Meanwhile games like Lads is 1 in a million while all the other gachas guys are forced to dress up covered from head to toes and somehow he try to argue then men are more sexualized than women ffs.

-10

u/uwuphobe Jun 28 '26

What “triple standard” are you even talking about. There’s even a thread here proving your wrong.

https://www.reddit.com/r/gachagaming/s/AKTr8Ne6O8

14

u/YellowAppleCinema Jun 28 '26

How is your link proving me wrong? The pictures in that topic have girls wearing bikinis.

Meanwhile LADS has straightup nudity and sex and oral sex

18

u/CulturalGolf1135 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

"Meanwhile LADS has straightup nudity and sex and oral sex "

No they don't, Jesus Christ people just be upvoting anything without fact checking.

And the reality of the situation is men is still never as sexualized as women. like look at fucking Brown Dust, Azur Lane and several gacha and media out there. lads in comparison is 1 in a million on the male side.

Also dismissing a thread of several women from several different video game with some provocative bikini and posing that you would rarely ever seen with male characters as just "women in bikini" like you guys can't help yourself but make up shit to justify this "double standard" delusion.

8

u/YellowAppleCinema Jun 29 '26

"No they don't,"

If LADS doesnt have  straightup nudity and sex and oral sex... which ones does it have, and which ones it doesnt? Clarify. Dont just say no, clarify what it does have.

They complain about sexualization of women in male centric gacha games meanwhile the most profitable gacha game is LADS atleast according to sensor tower

10

u/Big_Coconut8630 Jun 30 '26

This is gonna blow your mind, but women aren't a hivemind. Crazy, I know.

-31

u/Core_Of_Indulgence Jun 28 '26

But, Lads is one game, one that managed to breakout and carter to women.

Look at that Same list, How many other games are like that? What think you wil see mostly  see in the top 50 most profitable gacha games?

49

u/Solid1111111 Jun 28 '26

My point is you don’t see anyone criticizing LADS for being oversexualized or how it’s morally wrong or objectification or saying it should be censored like people say for other games. It’s wrong for ZZZ to have clothed characters with suggestive poses or outfits and yet no one cares when LADS is way worse than that and makes several times more money than most of them.

0

u/Core_Of_Indulgence Jun 30 '26

LADS is a exption, one Very sucefull game that oversexualizes man in against dozen of  games that do só for women.

The whole  reazon is so sucefull is cause there's no competion.

18

u/FerGSL013 Jun 28 '26

That's not the issue, the game can be as succesful as it wants to be,its players continously call for the censorship and eos of games that cater to males

2

u/PessoaHeteronimo Jun 29 '26

Damn, I would immediately comeback to Azur Lane ...

8

u/kyrades Jun 29 '26

What the actual fuck are you talking about.

1) LADS has no explicit scenes showing genitals or nudity, it is not an R21 game. It is rated 16 and above due to the adult themes of a DATING game.

2) It is a DATING game, the key gameplay is to DATE THE CHARACTERS. Why would the target audience not expect objectification????

You comparing a Dating game to a mainstream gacha like Genshin/wuwa/ZZZ is asinine. The other gacha games are, at their core, not a dating game. And they are not marketed as dating games. They are RPG games that have player bases of all ages.

If you want to compare, compare LADS to the MILLIONS of eroge/dating sims for men you have out there. Do you hear anyone complaining about objectification in those erogames? NO. Because that's what the eroges are meant to do.

Freaking brain dead gooners can't think for shit before jumping on to the women hate train.

24

u/PatheticAndTragic HSR, WuWa Jun 29 '26

Freaking brain dead gooners

Hahaha I legit feel bad for you. LADS players used the insult so many times towards other games that they need to do everything in their power to dissociate from the word.

The truth is that LADS is the biggest gooner game of all the ones you mentioned by a mile, its ok to admit it, wear the gooner title like a badge. But you can't because for you it's been an insult for so long that you now need to find any excuse to make it seem like your game is not the most mainstream gooner game of all.

21

u/YellowAppleCinema Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

This. Its doubly ironic because the person compares LADS to eroge games, while saying gacha games arent eroge games..... and then says gacha gamers are gooners while LADS gamers arent gooners?

If LADS is comparable to eroge games, then LADS is far more gooner than any gacha game, by the persons own words.... and yet they dont realize it themselves, even after saying it themselves, its incredible how blind these people are.

And being a gooner is ok.... but then the person also insults gooners nonstop in their entire post, crazy work

18

u/YellowAppleCinema Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

If you compare LADS to an eroge game, while saying gacha games arent eroge games, buddy i think YOU are the gooner, not the gacha gamers

stop being so gooner brained please and calm down, think with your head for once.

It's crazy work that you insult gooners, you keep on insulting gooners, but then it turns out you are a bigger gooner than the people you are insulting, what does that make you? by your own words?

7

u/PlotPlates Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Uhm women actually complain about those. Refering to your last paragraph...

In fact we have so many articles from women movements trying to take down Pornograph and erogames.

Then we have games like Stellar blade, which is popular and mostly fanservice with no explicit r18 is being ridiculed ever since it came out, even its new Iteration or sequel is getting bashed by feminists.

Imagine a game that only has Sexy women, is getting bashed so hard for objectifacation, but a Complete softcore ecchi gacha game made for women is actually not even receiving actual intense hate from the opposite gender.

The comment you replied to isn't hate to women. Its just a banter to society as a whole with its ridicilous standards of morality.

I am Kinda appalled you think Slight fanservice for men are never criticized, when Genshin right now is on a drama train about Sandrones short skirt...

The reason why most Erogames dont get called out, because erogames stay behind the Dark web, and isn't popular enough to be talked about by people.

If people really knew the dark web that much, oh the amount of articles will come from seeing the amount of rape, slavery porn in those games scatter around in the dark web. But alas it doesn't because bringing up dark games isn't a good idea. Better to keep them on the dark.

1

u/kyrades Jun 29 '26

I think you give too much credit to that poster above you I was replying to. The fact that a Dating game was compared to a non-Dating game itself is a moot discussion since (1) there are no dating mechanics even if there is fan service, and (2) the target audience is not the same. LADS in itself is a game made for the explicit purpose of recreating dating experience, it is not fan service. The poster was also blatantly sprouting false information about the game, while complaining about 'how good female gamers have it'. So no, I do not think he is commenting in good faith.

My point was not to argue against the fact that regular games get too much noise and censorship due to fanservice but that LADS as a game should not be compared to 'normal games' with no intention of being a dating game. To whine that LADS has too much 'fanservice' and crying about why other games don't get the same grace is ridiculous, because you are comparing apples to oranges.

My reply was not a commentary on the state of censorship in mainstream games. I certainly understand that there is an excessive amount of censorship in current games, but using LADS as a counter-argument is not the smoking gun that many of these pitchfork holders think it is.

Dating games for women, much like the eroges, were an extremely niche and unknown genre of games (to the western audience) that has existed for at least 20 years. It's just unfortunate that LADS is being talked about as if it's a new thing, and used as a weapon in the discourse of game censorship. It just happened to get extremely popular in recent times, and should not be discussed in the same vein as Genshin/Wuwa/ZZZ. Also there are literally thousands of eroges on Steam, so it is not just on the dark web.

u/A12qwas World's biggest Heaven Burns Red glazer Jun 29 '26

if only there was a ftp yuri gacha like that

2

u/lookupthesky Jun 30 '26

look man the people in this post is crazy sure, but lads as a game is greedy as fuck. the game presentation is high quality but players of this game do not have it good simply because the gacha/resources are even stingier than hoyoverse games and lads barely has any competition

lads is also targeted towards straight female players so yeah they don't want female characters/LI in their game? just like straight male players probably don't want male characters in their waifu games??? weird take tbh

2

u/rinuskoe Jun 30 '26

i already said in the previous post about this drama. if you go out of your way to court the crazies, you can't suddenly pretend to be shocked when you get all the crazies lol.

applies to both female and male players, not just hating on one specific gender.

160

u/BASED_Take_Machine Jun 28 '26

they reap what they sow. this is the playerbase they cultivate to milk.

205

u/Oceanshan Jun 28 '26

It's the price to pay when you're making money by sucking off every penny with very predatory models from very a dedicated niche fanbase. It make consistent high money even compared to the top dogs like Genshin but if they piss the playerbase off? These gals are much ferocious than the guys

24

u/a__new_name Trickcal, Zenless, WuWa Jun 28 '26

Something-something hell hath no fury.

20

u/Koanos Jun 28 '26

Which is something interesting. Genshin is much larger but haven’t seen such backlash this intense.

216

u/Dragoncat_3_4 Jun 28 '26

Genshin is too normie, and contrary to popular belief, not nearly gooner enough. The audience it cultivates is much less parasocial and more chill in general.

42

u/MichaelCrossAC Jun 29 '26

And if a controversy starts to get intense, usually the only victim is the community itself trying to ragebait its own members, or we take it out on Google Classroom.

91

u/Equivalent_Ad_5860 Jun 28 '26

For Genshin most of the playerbase is normal and they don't lean too much into ultra parasocialism like Lads does with it's"scenario", it also help that Genshin had a large cast and more focused to it's main story so most player is usually not THAT attached to a character. Lads unfortunately lean soo much into parasocialism and they seem to neglected their main story, it create a situation most player has an unhealthy attachment because of the emotionally intimate story that they keep releasing instead of a more neutral/narrative one

30

u/Oceanshan Jun 29 '26

Yep. Price to pay when you design these hot guys like players ( mostly girls) virtual boyfriends. Many of these girls are, let say, inexperienced in their irl relationships or too young, so they're pretty vulnerable emotionally. Now throw them some handsome, good body, good occupation, with personality traits that specifically created to suit girl interests, with unrealistic expectations romance. Well, they would ready to throw their money with unreasonable amounts compared to their expenses to get everything for these guys. Male host bar, idol,...all follows some form of this. But what if you piss off these girls, feeling that they and their boy get betrayed, mistreated by the company? Oh boy, you can even see many irl stories about this with different scenarios.

It's not like Genshin don't use predatory tactics ( which every gachas games do) and make people emotionally attracted to characters ( which every gacha do to make them pull for these characters). But they don't do to this extent and specifically carved to one playerbase that can be, well,....more extreme than other

2

u/NafaTheA Jun 29 '26

This is the most accurate statement I've ever heard. Basically if you're too attached to a character, they literally means a world to them. I've been there before, but thankfully I broke through that unhealthy attachment, lol. I know there's quite a number of other otomes, but I guess the others don't stick as much as LADS. But yeah, most LADS player devoted their life to this game

5

u/Koanos Jun 29 '26

I’m curious how neglected of a main story are we talking here? Like 8 weeks?

19

u/aerie_zephyr Jun 29 '26

Up to 500 days for the newest two characters out of total five because they update main story every half year, two characters at a time, as I recall.

They do get focus in other areas/stories though, just not the main story and since a new character is coming out, the main story update will focus on the newest character, delaying the main story updates for the aforementioned two

9

u/Koanos Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

500 days feels like too long. I know Hoyo and Kuro Games are held to much higher standards, but it makes me wonder about the average for a game as big as LADS.

10

u/Equivalent_Ad_5860 Jun 29 '26

Honestly I think the reaction won't be that bad if the update size was at least like FGO

5

u/Koanos Jun 29 '26

Ah, so what you're telling me is they don't update the main story, and this character essentially got content instead?

→ More replies (0)

38

u/slash197 Jun 29 '26

LADS is a romance game with a very small cast of characters. The entire point of the game is to get players to feel actual romantic feelings towards the guys and to then devote their bank accounts to their fave.

18

u/Koanos Jun 29 '26

Ah, so while LADS is smaller in sheer size, their ratio of players with the willingness to do these unhinged things is much higher.

Like, instead of 1/1000 unhinged players, it’s closer to 1/10 unhinged players?

37

u/Wodstarfallisback Jun 28 '26

Genshin plays it safe and keeps expectations very low for pretty much anything, so when they do good things (Music, Zone art, etc.) they get all the praise.

-6

u/genshin4ddict Jun 28 '26

Some people in China went crazy over Scaramouche's banner because they hated that character. Those people killed real life cats over this.

44

u/Economy_Pass5452 Jun 28 '26

The cat part was a hoax

10

u/Desperate-Owl-4830 Jun 29 '26

Bro still living from the past full of hoax🤣

-2

u/ArcanumRealm Jun 28 '26

You prob started playing Genshin recently. I still remember the ... Zhongli incident. Neuvilette spin fix. Scaramouche was also not that well received in CN let's say. And while it was not Genshin there was also the og HI3rd bunny girl incident. And let me tell you. If the Tsaritsa turned out to be a Bronya/Elysia/Kiana expy. Forget about design itself. But the community would have gone balistic with them having a husband and child XD. There would have been a new word for backlash.

13

u/Fuzzy_Astronaut_3420 Jun 29 '26

The audacity to talk about genshin, you clearly don't follow the game anymore, let me guess you're following it in agenda impact. As a 1+ years genshin quitters, let me tell you tsaritsa isn't any bronya/elysia/kiana bs. Get out!

-7

u/ArcanumRealm Jun 29 '26

> If the Tsaritsa turned out to be a Bronya/Elysia/Kiana expy.

Read my comment again. And search the meaning of the word if. I know she isn't. I just spoke of a hypothetical scenarion if she was.

13

u/FerGSL013 Jun 28 '26

Well the zhongli and neuvillete were about meta and damage numbers,HI3rd bunny girl thing was mostly because the CN and Global servers are not in sync so the anniversaries were sepparate events the bunny girl video was for global(don't know if they planned more content),but the CN guys got mad that they didn't get anything during the global anniversary inspite of them usually getting more freebies during their server's anni, then about Scarra I don't know what happened

11

u/Chaostomb Jun 29 '26

Scaramouche is just a lightning rod for Mihoyo antis on the CN side. They've being on this crusade for 6 years already, ever since Genshin's release, but Scaramouche and any plot or characters related to him was the the first time they created a pretty big drama. By nitpicking and outright spreading misinformation regarding his plot arc, they got some minor success in creating drama and decreasing Mihoyo's image to outsiders. So they've being trying to get the same drama every time he appears in the game.

-2

u/ArcanumRealm Jun 28 '26

Eh. Somewhat but not really.

Zhongli was more about him being the the Archon of the CN region. They took that as a matter of national pride more than anything. Klee was bad too at launch being worse than Diluc with Xingyu but you did not see this outrage.

Neuvillete was more about him being nerfed after launch than anything. If he was released with the fix in place people would not have cared for the most part.

Correct about the bunny girl incident. But it was not about freebies per say. The only thing global got over CN was the possible bunny girl event. Which could not be released in CN due to censorship. They got salty about it and mass reported it as destroying national image as one of the characters involved represented CN (again).

Scarra was just disliked. Becoming Anemo from electro. The whitewashing. Them changing his outfit etc.

2

u/Harunomasu Jun 30 '26

If you are not Genshin players or even following Genshin CN, like many others including me, who also read Weibo, XHS, Miyoushe, and Bilibili, you shouldn't write your comment as fact. Write it as "in my opinion"

Zhongli and Neuvi's case both the same, that they're being advertised "wrongly" instead of just a case of "we don't like this guy and we decide to boycott it."

Zhongli is advertised mostly as damage dealer back then, and the comment in Weibo mentioned that his petrification lasts 7seconds but in actual game, it's around 4seconds and done (yes, someone count it). There are other things as well, like how he's weaker than Venti, and he's the "Warlord General" and shouldn't be weak. Yes, it comes from the CN believes that he should be stronger, but that's not the only reason. If you follow during that day, you will know. Apparently, you just heard someone says something and you say it to others without checking on facts

Neuvi's case was always about how he's being advertised as "spin to win" but then they decided to take that feature back. The people who buy him with that mindset think it's a scam, and they're rallying the spenders (and I emphasis on this, the spenders, not the f2ps bros or whatever), to stop paying and file lawsuit. This is why Neuvi got reverted back to his "spin to win" function

Scara hate is always something that people blow up out of proportion. Anti-Genshin or Anti-Hoyo in CN love to use him as their reason to hate Genshin, but as you can see, during his birthday this year his fans collectively create a beautiful art celebrating his birthday. So no, the hate is never about the whitewashing or anything. He was just seen as an easy target by the Anti-Genshin in CN. Especially during 4.8 Simulanka when they forced hate on him for his interaction with Nilou. Again, if you don't know what you don't know, don't say it.

I don't know about HI3 so I won't say anything to that.

0

u/ArcanumRealm Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

> Zhongli is advertised mostly as damage dealer back then

How? Because he was hitting enemies? Every character was marketed as a damage dealer then.

> There are other things as well, like how he's weaker than Venti, and he's the "Warlord General" and shouldn't be weak. Yes, it comes from the CN believes that he should be stronger, but that's not the only reason

Never said it was the ONLY reason. I said it was the main reason. Which it was. They did not want the Archon of CN to be weaker than Venti or other characters. The entire outrage was OVERWHELMINGLY about Zhongli being so weak while representing CN. The burst duration was just a ballpoint in that list. Easy proof of that is the very fact that they never changed the duration of his burst. And nobody cared after the overall buffs.

> If you follow during that day, you will know. Apparently, you just heard someone says something and you say it to others without checking on facts

Maybe you should first fully read peoples comments before replying.

> Neuvi's case was always about how he's being advertised as "spin to win" but then they decided to take that feature back.

Are you making stuff up now? Can you show me hoyo using the "spin to win" tech in their livestream or in any of their promotional materials? Can you show them advertising it?

> The people who buy him with that mindset think it's a scam, and they're rallying the spenders (and I emphasis on this, the spenders, not the f2ps bros or whatever), to stop paying and file lawsuit. This is why Neuvi got reverted back to his "spin to win" function

And again what is your point here? That people were upset Neuvilette got "nerfed" after launch? Did you read my comment? Asking again.

> Scara hate is always something that people blow up out of proportion.

Doesn't change it happened.

> Anti-Genshin or Anti-Hoyo in CN love to use him as their reason to hate Genshin, but as you can see, during his birthday this year his fans collectively create a beautiful art celebrating his birthday. He was just seen as an easy target by the Anti-Genshin in CN. Especially during 4.8 Simulanka when they forced hate on him for his interaction with Nilou. Again, if you don't know what you don't know, don't say it.

"It was not the Genshin crowd it's the people that hate Genshin that do all the bad stuff!!!". I guess anyone complaying about anything in the game is anti-Hoyo and a Genshin hater to you. That's not how it works though so tnfortunately no. It was the Genshin community. A part of it of course. Take less cope for future. Stuff is not good for you. There were people that disliked him and people that loved him. And both sides made themselves loud and clear. Just like there are people that love the relation between Sandrone and Arlecchino and people that call it a retcon. Nothing more than that. And again. Does not change the fact it happened.

> If you are not Genshin players or even following Genshin CN, like many others including me, who also read Weibo, XHS, Miyoushe, and Bilibili, you shouldn't write your comment as fact. Write it as "in my opinion"

You prob should be less condescendant in the future especially when it is so ironic you talk about people not reading when you clearly did not bother to fully read my comments.

u/Desperate-Owl-4830 Jun 29 '26

Bro while im not into expy even if they go with the bronya expy with tsaritsa only the loud minority would go crazy about it, you clearly dont know a thing about the whole community. Stfu.

2

u/ArcanumRealm Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

It looks like you are on some cope. Do you think the CN community would have reacted positively to a bronya/elysia/kiana expy having a lover and a child? The EN side will probably not care since few played HI3rd. But the Asia side? Be real. If Remielle dropped in ZZZ and it turned out she has a relationship with one of the male original void hunters? Oh yeah. I can imagine.

But maybe you are right. After all they never reacted strongly to particular shipping in the past right? Huh? What's this? Kaveh is calling to report his stand being vandalised?

Oh wait a second. I get another call from Cyrene. :)

u/MarsupialMisanthrope Jun 30 '26

I always assumed Alice was a test case. Very flirty, sensual woman with a (absent) husband and a child. I haven’t heard widespread outrage about it (although there are still people coping about Klee being a clone, get help guys) but I also haven’t heard the kind of gooner excitement Lauma got. And that’s with her having always been positioned as Klee’s mom, which doesn’t bode well for dropping an expy of a major existing character with a brand new lover and child.

There’s some clear inspiration from Bronya in the Tsaritsa, but she’s also very clearly not an expy.

1

u/Harunomasu Jun 30 '26

He really didn't know. I read comments on bilibili and weibo, and 90% are positive. But if he go to tieba maybe, but looking at him, he didn't even know how to access tieba anyway. Just let him be

1

u/Sadcelerystick Jun 29 '26

But the Devs don’t choose to do this, it’s just their job. It’s no different than a person throwing something at you while you’re working as a cashier.

7

u/Dyuujen Jun 28 '26

Wouldn’t be surprised i remember there was that one guy in China that went to mihoyo headquarter with a knife to assassinate on of the execs because of an outrage of global getting a exclusive cinematic of characters in a bunny suit for an anniversary the best part? They cancelled the outfits and gave compensation to the china players 😂 like “im sorry you guys almost killed me let me recompensate you.”

This game was a mistake. Thanks to LADS, we have an entire generation of goonerbrained women who think men should all look and act like Caleb the master manipulator or some shit. Like WTF?

49

u/scoutscope hyperglazer + bluepoggers Jun 28 '26

i really don’t think that’s the lesson here

As if women did not read trashy wish fulfillment romance fiction before it's release. And I think you overestimate it's audience by two-three degrees of magnitude.

1

u/tabbycatcarnival Jul 01 '26

Lmao you men genuinely think this is the same thing as abhorrent objectification of female bodies and expecting them to move in unrealistic ways

54

u/AndroidPolaroid Jun 28 '26

would you also say the same about waifubait gacha games and their effect on goonerbrained men?

28

u/My-Internet-GF Jun 28 '26

100%.

16

u/Dragoncat_3_4 Jun 28 '26

I respect the consistency, even if I disagree on both counts.

31

u/AndroidPolaroid Jun 28 '26

fair enough then

0

u/Arcares07 Jun 28 '26

It’s literally the only sane take. Both are bad.

0

u/tabbycatcarnival Jul 01 '26

No it fucking isn't. the most gooner of women oriented shit does not disrespect men or humiliate them.

28

u/quiet_frequency Jun 28 '26

I still sometimes think about that reddit story about a woman who allegedly went on a date with a hentai addict who got mad that her tits didn't leak milk and it apparently meant that "she wasn't sexually attracted to him" even though she was minutes away from, y'know, having sex with him.

But yeah, LADS is the shit responsible for ruining society, lmao.

That's funny.

My thoughts go out to the one person who normally works the mailroom at their company. Probably normally a bit of an odd job but not like a bad one or anything. But suddenly now it's probably like a warzone or something.

139

u/Sabrac707 Jun 28 '26

Indeed, however, I do find hard sometimes to sympathize with the dev companies when they are the ones fostering this extreme parasocial relationships their audience tend to develop with their games.

2

u/Appropriate_Crew_825 Jun 29 '26

I dont think its fair to blame a game of the parasocial problems of their playerbase. Thats akin to saying Twilight novels predates on whatever twisted fantasy their readers have or something like that.

By that rule of thumb no VN or romantic book should exist I think.

10

u/Elissiaro Jun 30 '26

I mean in LaDs case, they do very much lean into the parasocial aspect.

You interact with the boy of your choice on the homescreen from your pov. And you can like, pet his head, hold his hand, listen to his heartbeat, from your pov...

There's a feature where you can work out, nap, or study with him.

There's a big interaction thing with your ingame phone, where you text him, and interact with his social media posts, and when you log in for the first time of the day you might get a random "phone call" from him.

There's even a bit of the game that's set up to have you "talk" to him in various ways. Like, talk about your day and he'll give bland reactions based on if you selected to talk about something good or bad that happened. And one option thee is literally him introducing himself to your friends and family lol.

In fact, one of the new features they showed in the latest livestream was AR stuff where you can take photos of the boys in the real world.

2

u/Appropriate_Crew_825 Jun 30 '26

Ok. I dont know what to say.

I'll post an unicorn instead:

6

u/rinuskoe Jun 30 '26

it's fair. they obviously are pushing it to the limit with each update, to keep the players hooked.

if you court the crazies, you have to deal with the crazies. they could have kept the game less risque, but obviously that didn't make good money so yeah. want the benefit? manage the risks too.

but i also think this is just a passing issue. i doubt it'll make players stop playing. they are way too deep in the hole lol.

-32

u/BusBoatBuey Jun 28 '26

That is a stupid argument. All popular media will naturally develop a parasocial link with its audience. Not to the fault of the creator but instead the audience. You think George Lucas was to blame for those insane Star Wars fans destroying the kid that played young Anakin's life through constant bullying?

If people become attached to something, naturally they will try to preserve it. It is human nature that has repeated since before recorded history. Even that earliest recorded history has fanatics going crazy over its interpretations.

48

u/AlekRhader Jun 28 '26

One one hand, you're not wrong that works of fiction will naturally stablish a link with it's audience.

On the other hand this is a gacha game, it's not only stablishing that link but also exploiting it to it's maximum and on purpose. It's kinda like idol culture....on one hand yeah, it sucks that idols get into a carreer where they can't even have a public relationship, but on the other hand they know what they're getting themselves into and willingly do so in order to get money from that kind of parasocial fan. Same thing from the devs here, it sucks that they're getting through this kinda shit, but let's not pretend they're saints that aren't sucking every last bit of money possible from it's fans.

LaDs in particular is known for being terrible in that regard and extremely exploitative, so yeah, there's a world of difference between something like Star Wars and LaDs.

29

u/EtadanikM Jun 28 '26

I think otome games (basically dating sims targeting women) go a step beyond your typical gacha media in fostering parasocial relationships.

12

u/Equivalent_Ad_5860 Jun 28 '26

I honestly think Lads is a different beast... the amount of fan service it had will put most otome game to shame

79

u/AtalanteSimpsonn Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

they cultivated their own fanbase to be this parasocial.

like i know in gacha spaces eastern fans are seen as the superior gigachad fans that are chill and nice and right about everything while west is just messy but at the west really doesnt fall for parasocialism compared to east

stan(twt) culture doesnt get half as messy as idol culture

i know this is happening cuz of reward and story drama but this is how you get fans that send you cow shit

5

u/usernames_required Jun 30 '26

being someone whose had her foot in both asian and anglo fandoms, this is true. anglo fandom are only ever surrounded by their own discourses so they look to The Enlightened Easterners for an ideal fandom environment. since asian fandoms have a lax reputation about more controversial topics (e.g. incest) they love to use the former as some sort of bastion for free speech or whatever - but those who know about their absolute batshit insane tendencies beg to differ. it’s annoyed me then and it annoys me now. (this behavior exceeds fandom spaces too, see: self-hating orientalists who think they would be happier if they were asian.)

24

u/No_Food_447 Jun 28 '26

But it’s on par with the intensity they spend on the game as well as fan promotions, right?

7

u/djsekani Nikke / Star Savior / Zenless Zone Zero Jun 28 '26

I'm impressed y'all are able to parse and comprehend this shit. No matter how many Chinese drama threads I read I've never been able to make sense of any of them.

-4

u/prettypickely Jun 28 '26

Yeah like why are they upset about a new character? I thought the game was an otome or some shit.

20

u/RinTheTV Jun 28 '26

I mean the post clearly says it. Existence of a new lead being advertised "confirms" player fears that their favourite character is no longer relevant, with the post saying that some characters haven't had a story update for over 500 days/well over a year.

LADS pretty much advertises the romancing of the characters as an integral part of the game. When a character you're crazy about (to the point of spending money on it just to max them) hasn't had any relevance for nearing 2 years now, I can sort of understand why they'd feel "scammed."

Though the degree of the backlash is still pretty insane to me tbh - but hell hath no fury like a woman scorned I suppose.

8

u/prettypickely Jun 28 '26

Ahhh thank you for clarifying. I didn't realize it was also an issue with the other character's stories not been updated. The best thing upset players can do is just quit the game but I know people will not do that.

5

u/RinTheTV Jun 28 '26

Ye. Unfortunately these people are parasocial as fuck, but to be expected when you exploit lonely women who only have this gacha going for them.

3

u/HellfirePassion Jun 28 '26

last thread about this issue had someone clarify that main story isn't updated in general, it has nothing to do with 'your favorite is neglected'. All characters got story updates regularly, they were just side-stories.

So the 500-day point is misleading.

2

u/fishyronin Jun 29 '26

What a weird time we live in.

LADS fandom karma for what they've  done to Snowbreak😂

32

Snowbreak fucked itself 😅 I feel like 95% of LaDS players have never even heard of it.

-2

u/ArcticTyphoon Jun 28 '26

That would depend on how much of a percentage LADS players use social media.

26

u/LunaProc Jun 28 '26

Snowbreak would still fuck itself over due to incompetent devs

CN population equals to double (2x) of all countries in the whole europe continent. The significance of their voices are big enough and legit.

1

u/Delicious_Corner_611 Jul 01 '26

Same, I can never fully understand the colorism and paranormal para social relations that's the develop for pixel characters or even real life actors and idols. It's honestly scary how awful they can be, lots of people glorify Chinese culture and their ways of not take no for an answer, being assertive, and just being a "if I want it , I'm gonna do anything to get it" type of behavior 😭 like there is nothing wrong with these characteristics but they take it to an extreme level

Not to only blame the CN fans, infold srsly has NO backbone, plus wtf is going on with the 731 stuff, like there is close to no way that global fans could have know about such news, for the CN girlies that reason is valid, but it's no reason to completeley get rid of valko and the creative team behind him. it's like they are trynna sabotage the game on purpose sometimes, infold takes money from players that have emotionally attached to the characters in game, then exploit such emotional attachment by giving the bare minimum to the players, like bro as an f2p girl farming diamonds is so fxxing difficult for no reason, they take in all that $$$ just to give out crumbs.

For the "women's safety" bull 💩 they keep complaining about, why TF didn't they complain about that earlier, like Caleb literally drugs and stalksMC, sylus is a literal crime lord that also stalks MC, Xavier is basically a stalker, zayne is a heart doctor b/c he knew that MC would need a heart doctor so there is a power dynamic there, rafayel ( rafayel is my main so I basically have rose tinted glasses on) BUT when it's not taken for fun he is manipulative, not really manipulative but kinda, he keeps secrets a lot. But the hypocrisy is when they are like oh valko broke into MC's home. Tf?!?! We have barely know valko, since his whole personification animal is a wolf, I interpreted as like MC's scent domesticated valko and he followed her home. And going off of the standards and privileges the other LIs have in game, that's basically just a norm.

Plus, fxxking infold, and CN girlies, like y'all bring up issues that valko is too tan. Like that boy is just warm toned due to his hair and eye color, remove that and he is gonna be as place as paper. Like they are so racist, as a black girlie. I really can't stand that. Calling him ugly cuz he is too "tan". Their racist and colorist ways have been so glorified, like when I first saw valko he was really cringe and funny, then his personality was revealed and I folded HARD, plus he wears glasses.

Anyways enough, in just trynna say CN girlies are taking this too far in the world direction fueled with hypocrisy. Imagine going to the government over a fictional character 😭 zamm never in my life.
