I just realized Sofia is rarely talked about even though she is one of the most impressive European gymnasts we saw appear in the last year, so I thought I would create a thread to discuss her gymnastics.

Sofia really impressed at Euro last year (1st TF, 9th AA, 6th UB, 3rd BB), and I was sad to see her miss this year's tournament, especially given she was the 2025 bronze holder on BB behind Derwel (retired) and Barbosu (NCAA/suspended?). She deserved to be able to defend her BB medal.

So it was so great to see her prove her Italian coaches wrong and lead Italy to gold, and today win AA bronze at Mediterranean Games behind 2 world class, all time talents like Kaylia Nemour and Alba Petisco.

I feel Sofia has now earned her spot for Worlds this year (and hopefully 2028?) alongside Giulia and Manila.

I have no idea what this choreo looks like but I hear it all the time on the gymternet. I REALLY WANT TO KNOW!! I browsed through a lot of the 90/00s romanian routines but didn’t see anything that looks like choo choo-ing lmfao. A timestamp/link would be greatly appreciated.

Aerial + Split Jump Connection

- Upon landing the Aerial, Melnikova immediately bends her knees in preparation for the Split Jump. However, 'Poor Rhythm of Connection' deduction potentially assessed because she does not immediately take off for the Split Jump. Discretion permitted.

Double Turn in Tuck Stand

- Melnikova slightly rotates in the direction of the turn and reverses the direction of rotation before starting the actual turn. Therefore, apply deduction for ‘Excessive Preparation’

- Medium Balance error due to 1) Slightly off axis during turn + 2) Turn/Lean of Torso at the end of the Turn

Side Somi

- Knee angle must be less than 90 Degrees to avoid deduction for 'Inexactness of Tuck Position' on single saltos

- For landing posture, Melnikova's chest has a deep lean despite still being above horizontal. Deduct for deviation from ideal position

Pause, Prior to Round Of

- Simply performing arm or preparatory movements is insufficient to avoid pause deduction.

Notes - Artistry Deductions

1. Amplitude of Movements

Melnikova displays sufficient amplitude of movements in the routine through the elongation of her body and use of larger movements such as the kicks of her leg slightly above horizontal and extension of her body into a brief scale following her 'Close to Beam' choreography sequence.

It's interesting to note that prior to 2022, Melnikova performed these same leg swings, but with much more limited amplitude. However, instead of only hitting 45 degrees as she did in the past, her free leg now reaches slightly above horizontal. Similarly, she had minimal choreography prior to her acrobatic series, but has now added a body wave before it.

1. Involvement of the Body Parts

Melnikova's use of her head and torso are limited in the choreography of the routine. For example, in her 'Side Choreography' passage, the majority of movements are performed by her arms, with the use of her torso being much more limited in terms of quantity and amplitude.

1. Poor Footwork in Releve

This deduction can be assessed even if there is only a single instance of poor releve in the entire routine. Prior to and following her acrobatic series and before her Kochetkova, Melnikova could show more extension through her feet so a straight line can be drawn from her shin and down through her foot.

1. Variation of Rhythm and Tempo

The movements and steps within the routine are primarily completed at the same tempo and could show a greater contrast of fast and slow movements.  In addition, both the brief hesitations in preparation for elements (e.g. Acrobatic Series, Kochetkova), along with the actual pause before the dismount ( > 2 seconds) break up the flow of the routine to a degree.

1. Close to Beam Choreography

Satisfied with one choreography movement touching beam with two different body parts and one element touching the beam in the sequence following the Double Turn in Tuck Stand:

Movement 1 - From Cross Straddle Sit, Melnikova lies on her back and tucks her knees. She rests her head against the beam and extends each leg to vertical. She returns her legs to the beam and immediately moves into a Backwards Roll.

Satisfied as follows:

A (From Side Stand following Side Somi) -> Side Step to B

Body Movements

At A, Melnikova widens her stance, while extending her arms with the hands held at head height. She brings her right arm in front of her body, while performing some small rotations of her torso and hips.

While traveling from A to B, Melnikova performs various arm movements. She also slightly extends her right leg, with the foot being placed in tendu. She turns her torso to the left while tucking and extending her right leg.

Melnikova crosses her right foot behind her left foot and performs various arm movements as she travels along the beam. She takes a final step, with the left foot remaining flat on the beam and the right foot in releve. She raises her right arm over her had, her head and torso turned to the left at C to complete the sequence.

Very impressive how well this 10.0 quad beam routine composition holds up 21 years later. Such gorgeous form too

I'm happy to see her statue will be returned to it's original spot at Lake Phalen. The neighborhood around the lake and surrounding park has a large Hmong population with Hmong cultural events that occur at the lake and park frequently, so it's almost like Suni coming home to train brought her statue back to it's home.

Well, this is an exciting nominative roster for me! We have Elena Colas, Maiana Prat, Lorette Charpy, Morgane Osyssek-Reimer, and Anthony Mansard is back out there for France’s MAG’s which I’m happy to see! Along with this, we have Ruby Evans, Abi Martin, and Alia Leat for Team GB’s WAG’s, and Elliott Vernon who is the sole MAG on the roster for Team GB currently. With that in mind, I’m excited to see Elliot on this roster after his impressive display at CWG’s for Wales, and I love to see Welsh athletes receive international call ups for the GB squad ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧. So I will be crossing my fingers that we’ll see him compete here 🤞.

Lastly, this is along with the American athletes that are being sent here (words can’t describe how excited I am to see Cooper Kim compete here, as we love him representing us queer people out there ❤️🏳️‍🌈), as well as the US WAG’s in Lila Richardson, and Izzy Stassi (KJ Kindler’s first elite assignment internationally in her career :D).

Keegan Soehn, 2x Pan American Trampoline champion, world champion in DMT team, has been expelled by safe Sport Canada.

Soehn was expelled from gymnastics on June 1, 2026 after being sanctioned by Sport Integrity Canada for Physical Maltreatment, Sexual Maltreatment, Grooming and Boundary Transgressions.

Permanently ineligible to participate in any sport program, activity, event, or competition,
in any capacity, organized or sanctioned by Gymnastics Canada, any Adopting Sport
Organization, or their members. This sanction was imposed for conduct involving minors
that included engaging in inappropriate sexual touching , sending sexually explicit
messages, making sexual comments, and administering massages with no specific
training or expertise.

I want to thank @SarahZi1998 on X for alerting me to the news, and I will provide my own rough translation below, as well as type out all of the English parts for anyone who can’t read from the image: (@SarahZi1998 also provided a translation, so check that one out if you can as well)!

“And the European Championship is over. Everyone saw the loud result, medals and beautiful picture. But now I want to tell you what was really behind the scene of this result.”

“Due to the lack of proper conditions for training, one and a half months ago I made the decision to go to Germany to prepare for the European Championship.”

“All this time, I have repeatedly appealed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation to request material support for the training fee. In return, I was getting "tomorrow".”

“Eventually, I came to terms with the fact that the first half of the preparation will have to be paid completely by myself: housing, food, fuel and all other expenses.”

“After that, I asked for only one thing - to pay the official training fee in Kinbaum. I was told they would help. But as a result, there was no help from neither the Ministry nor the Federation.”

“Instead, the German Gymnastics Federation, upon learning about my situation, voluntarily helped me pay this fee.”

“I am genuinely surprised that all my actions, aimed at preparing the best, showing the maximum result and raising the flag of my country, have not received adequate support from people who hold responsible positions and are directly responsible for supporting Ukrainian sport and athletes.”

“So for this result I want to thank exclusively to my coach Gennady Ludwigovich Sartinsky, the German Gymnastics Federation, Rolandos, my friends and family who were there and supported me.”

“But certainly not to the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation or the Ministry of Youth and Sports. There's nothing more worthless than doing nothing to achieve a result, and then shouting about victory louder than everyone else.”

“It's a pity that 900 € to prepare sportsmena for the European Championship is, it turns out, too much.”

“But at the same time, members of the Federation can afford to fly business class. And then everyone wonders why athletes start thinking about changing their sporting nationality.”

“Don't be surprised”

Well, I don’t think I need to say how frustrating this is. The Ukrainian federation is already crumbling as it is, and it’s getting to the point where they don’t want any gymnasts competing for their country. It sucks that he had to pay for the first half of preparations for Euros, and then the federation/ministry couldn’t even pay for the training fee in Germany, I mean what is going on here?!

Moving on, I do wonder where Nazar could go if he were to change his nationality? It would honestly be in his best interest at this point with how great IIIia and Radomyr are doing at their respective countries after leaving Ukraine, and the Ukrainian federation quite frankly do not deserve a gymnast of Nazar’s level with the way he’s been treated by them, so I hope he makes the best decision for himself there!

Lastly, I’m glad the German federation were there for him, and helped him to pay the fee! Radomyr seems to be thriving in Germany, and it’s great to see for him, and I can’t wait to see more of him this quad! Of course, Radomyr and Nazar competing for Germany together would be a dream, but I don’t know if that would actually be realistic, or if he’d even want to do that, so I’m not going to say a lot there (as I myself am not the most knowledgeable on this topic).

Anyways, let me know all of your lovely thoughts and opinions below, and I’m wishing Nazar all of the best in this situation, as he deserves it and more ❤️.

The naturalization of elite athletes at the highest level is governed by section 8 (Discretionary Naturalization in the Public Interest, Ernessenseinbürgerung) of the Nationality Act (StAG). It generally allows for the reduction of residency requirements down to 3 years but for an athlete at the highest level it can be waved to as little as 6 months (or entirely but that's very very unlikely). Generally the language requirement is a major stumbling block because the German immigration language exam is no joke, but the StAG also allows the Ministry of the Interior to wave it down to B1 (conversational German) for a person of paramount public interest. Chepurnyi's 2 individual world medals, his Paris 6th place, and his recent European Championships all place him squarely within the "paramount public interest" category. Radomyr Stelmakh was given a "fast" by German standards path but Nazar would be a higher level than him.

IN THEORY: If he went right into intensive language programs he could get German citizenship in as little as six months, then be held by the Ukraine at FIG for one year. That would remove him from any chance to participate in qualification for LA. GerMAG isn't out of the running to qualify a team for LA, but they aren't a safe bet. They did reasonably well at Euros this year but no team they beat in the Euros team final qualified for Paris and they currently sit at 11th on the combined continental championship list (a list where the USA sits 23rd and will obviously do better). The IOC also requires a waiver from themselves and both federations for an athlete who has competed at a world championships within 3 years of the Olympics for their original country. Would you bet on Ukraine being accommodating? I wouldn't.

So the consideration is that he certainly couldn't be sure that he could go to LA even if the German bureaucracy moved as fast as it could move if he started today.

Ukraine repeatedly threatened not to send Illia Kovtun to competitions when he was in fights with the federation, but those were always empty threats as they need medals to insure funding. However that was a previous head coach who while not ideal was... significantly better. They also kept putting him and Stelmakh on their national team despite changes being announced and requests not to be included respectively. A bizarre move given that it assigned salary and budget space to two men they already knew were gone. There was even a point when Stella Zakharova claimed Stelmakh being named to the German national team wasn't REALLY him being named to the German national team but was really about Bundesliga [Narrator: The German Kader announcements have nothing to do with Bundesliga, he was in fact named to the German national team].

There is also a personality element to this. Chepurnyi has no problem speaking his mind and has left an abusive coaching situation before (which is why there is no chance in hell of him ending up in Croatia). Kovtun let his coach speak for him and Stelmakh said nothing at all. The fact that Chepurnyi refused to answer the direct question about if the German's have made an offer for him to compete for them is as good as saying yes. To me this all feels like, in general, it could move faster than with Stelmakh but it depends if Chepurnyi is willing to risk LA28.

The assumption should be that he isn't willing to risk not going to the Olympics but it's not impossible that he may view the situation with the Ukrainian fed to be so bad that he'd rather not go than be trapped in this situation for the next 3 years.

Chepurnyi has said he is not returning to Ukraine to train for Worlds.

Of Historical Note: The German gymnastics federation traveled, trained with, and funded Oksana Chusovitina for years when she was competing for Uzbekistan, at least as early as 2003 Worlds (when she was World Vault champion), and was effectively a member of the German national team.

TDLR: Yes he could, if everything aligned, compete for Germany in LA. But practically he either competes for Ukraine in LA or he skips the Olympics entirely. Given how bad the working and personal conditions are said to be at the Ukrainian national training base (he did not want to compete at Euros at all under those conditions) I don't think people should entirely dismiss that he may bypass LA28 by his own choice.

Now I'm thinking about it the past decade gave us some of the most iconic moments in the history of this sport:

- The Mustafina era

- Gabby Douglas breaking down barriers

- The two best MAG (Kohei) and WAG (Simone) gymnasts of all time competing practically at the same time.

- L.N being sentenced.

A lot of things were going on !!

I saw this a while ago, and was really surprised, but I haven’t seen it pop up in the sub so I’m assuming it’s not even remotely newsworthy lol. So I went back and started looking at the previous worlds’ wikipedia pages and noticed North Korea isn’t listed as participating in them. I watch such an insane amount of gymnastics along with other sports, so much so that I honestly can’t remember what they as a team have and haven’t done competition-wise, but I know it’s rare to see them internationally to begin with.

Can someone enlighten me a bit on whether this is standard practice for them? Or why they do it - if so? I know they’re not particularly medal contenders, especially on the international stage, but they had some lovely gymnastics at Asian Championships in June.
