Pretty much the title, i have been a fan for some years now and would like to have the box sets of DVDs either to watch them or just to remember what i felt when first watching this series. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're a fan of Haruhi, you've probably seen at least a mention of The Genderbending of Haruhi Suzumiya, especially of the main character turned female, Kyonko. This was a fan project phenomenon back in the late 2000s, primarily during 2008: before Season 2 started airing. While I started watching anime juuuust at the tail end of the peak Haruhiism years (2010-2011), I was still very aware of the gender swapped characters. Recently, watching through the show again and feeling nostalgic, I decided to look back and do some research as to why this came about.

What I found was a very tight timeline spanning between 2/20/2008 and 3/10/2008.

The oldest uploaded image I could find of Kyonko was in February of 2007 on Danbooru, almost a year before an uploaded (and sadly deleted) NicoNIco video of full on character redraws. If you were there at the time, you probably remember them. It seems like that video, uploaded in January of '08, really introduced the concept to the wider fandom, and from there on there were a ton of redraw projects, fandubs, gender swapped character themes, fanfictions, doujins, the whole nine yards. And the turnaround from Nico to Youtube was FAST, often uploaded in the same week to both sites, or even on the same day. I also found a thread that, as far as I can tell, was the moment the idea became widely known to the EN speaking audience. This thread on AnimeSuki seemed to be the general hub for redraws, rewrites of the original novels, etc. https://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=63152

All that happened early into 2008, but that first picture goes back to 2007. People were drawing Kyon as a girl for a bit before that first Nico video where the Fanon accepted designs came to be. What I want to ask the fans who were there is... why? Does anyone know why this happened? I more or less get why it became so popular, Haruhiism was still so dominant and the wait for season 2 drummed up a lot of creative fans, but I've yet to see anyone explore how it came about in the first place, or why those Nico designs were so ubiquitous. Did we ever find out who did the original redraws of the CD covers? As far as I can tell, that's what really popularized the trend.

I recently watched the entire Haruhi Suzumiya series for the first time because ABEMA.TV streamed all the TV episodes and The Disappearance for free for the 20th anniversary in Japan. This is my impression after experiencing the series as a new viewer. 

I've been thinking about The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, and I wonder if we've been looking at it from the wrong perspective.

Most discussions focus on Nagato's wish, Kyon's choice, or the value of the original world.

But what if the story is also about Haruhi finally finding John Smith?

My idea is this:

Haruhi's obsession with aliens, time travelers, and espers may not be her true goal.

The turning point of her life was meeting John Smith three years earlier.

After that encounter, she created the SOS Brigade, searched for mysteries, handed out flyers, built a website, and constantly tried to reach the unknown.

What if all of those actions were ultimately attempts to reconnect with John Smith — the person who changed her worldview on Tanabata?

In this interpretation:

Aliens, time travelers, and espers are not the destination.

They are clues leading back to John Smith.

The SOS Brigade itself becomes a long-term broadcast signal — a way to be found.

Several details seem to support this reading.

The name of the SOS Brigade comes from ideas John Smith planted in Haruhi during their meeting three years earlier. Her flyers, website, and obsession with attracting attention can all be interpreted not merely as a search for the supernatural, but as repeated attempts to send a signal outward.

Viewed this way, Haruhi's activities look less like a hunt for aliens and more like a search for the person who convinced her that such things might exist.

The interesting part comes in Disappearance.

In the original world, Haruhi knows John Smith exists but never realizes that Kyon is John Smith.

In the altered world, however, Kyon actually introduces himself as John Smith.

That means the altered-world Haruhi achieves something the original Haruhi never does:

She finds John Smith.

This changes how I see the school gate scene.

Most viewers interpret it as Kyon finally finding Haruhi.

But perhaps it is also the moment when Haruhi finally finds the person she has been searching for since Tanabata.

Her reaction feels different from normal anime reunion tropes.

She looks like someone who has finally encountered a person she has been searching for for years.

And it makes the ending even more bittersweet.

Nagato loses her ideal world.

But Haruhi may also lose the only world in which she ever succeeded in finding John Smith.

If this reading is correct, then The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is not only the story of Nagato's wish or Kyon's decision.

It is also the story of a world where Haruhi finally reaches the destination she had been pursuing ever since that night three years earlier.

Was Haruhi truly chasing the supernatural — or was that just the path she took while searching for one specific person?
