Question How do you know if a horror game story is actually good?

I recently finished the first draft of the story for my new horror game. However, I'm not sure if it's actually effective or fits the horror genre well.

How do you evaluate whether a story works for a horror game? I'm looking forward to hearing your advice.

Discussion Playing Silent Hill f for the first time. Am I the only one that feels like this ain't really a Silent Hill game?

Game's good, combat's fun, exploration's good. Narratively though, it really only has some surface level similarities to Silent Hill, no? Fog, monsters designed around the protag's trauma etc.

But like, kinda just feels like a dark japanese folklore j-drama more than Silent HIll. Anyone else?

Discussion I'm curious what are your thoughts on a gears of war inspired Sally Acorn cover shooter?

It would be a sort of horror game where you go through a story based on the SatAM Sonic cartoons where the main character is Sally Acorn having to survive and complete tasks to beat Robotnik

While having to escape different robots he's sent after the freedom fighters

It would be a somewhat darker story and I'm curious on your thoughts on a game like this?

You can download the game on indiedb, gamejolt, or itch.io
Dive to depths of over 100 meters and carry out orders from above. The task will not be easy, because you are not alone.
Currently, there is one mission, one location, and one enemy available, but I will release an update with new content soon.
The game is completely free, so I would be grateful if you could write me your thoughts.

The Iron Shell demo is out now — free to download!

Hi everyone! I’m a solo developer working on a sub-nautical horror game about piloting a bathyscaphe on Cocytus, a hellish subsurface ocean world.

Extreme pressure, crushing isolation, claustrophobia, and much more await you. This is a short snippet of the gameplay, and I would love to hear your feedback. Since the game is still in development, I'm really curious to know what you think.
I’m a huge fan of this genre, and please don't be put off by the similarities to a certain legendary game—that exact masterpiece is what inspired and fascinated me to create this.
The premise: You are trapped inside a cramped bathyscaphe at an unimaginable depth beneath the icy, hellish world of Cocytus. Your mission is to retrieve data that is worth more than your life. Find the data, transmit it, and they will pull you back up. At least, that's what they said...

I’m happy to share that the demo of my game, \\\*\\\*Iron Shell\\\*\\\*, is now available for free!

If you give it a try, please let me know what you think. Your feedback means a lot to me, and honest criticism is welcome.

What did you enjoy? What didn’t work for you? What would you change or add?

I’m making this game for you to enjoy, so hearing about your experience will help me make it better.

Thanks for playing!

We’re releasing Museum 8 this Friday, September 4.

It’s an anomaly horror game set in a museum after closing.

Memorize the exhibits, spot what changed, and pick the right door.

Some anomalies are obvious.

Some are already watching you.

Here’s a new gameplay clip.

Discussion What upcoming or lesser-known horror games are actually on your radar right now?

I’ve been looking around at smaller horror games lately and I’m curious what people here are actually excited about.

Not necessarily the big releases everyone already knows about, more the indie games, upcoming Steam releases, weird little projects, Kickstarters, demos, or games that barely seem to have any attention yet.

What have you found recently that actually looks promising?

I’m also curious what makes you decide a horror game is worth following or wishlisting in the first place. Is it the atmosphere, monster design, story, graphics, a really good trailer, an unusual mechanic, or something else?

Feel free to share games you’ve found, or your own project if you’re working on something.

Question Barely ever dabbled in horror, but I want to try- which games would you recommend?

Hi, I’ve never really touched any sort of horror stories in my life, but I do want to try some of the classics I’ve missed out on.

The only sort of horror-adjacent things I’ve tried are Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel, Omori (which uses psychological horror elements), and the final route of Fate/Stay Night (which uses some body horror elements).

I feel like with the (mild) horror elements of Omori and F/SN, I sort of get a feeling of unease deep in my stomach, which can feel thrilling at some moments but overwhelming if it gets to be too much. How do you all look at your favorite horror games and prevent things from becoming ”too much”?

As for the games I’ve been wanting to play: Resident Evil series (especially 4), SOMA, Eternal Darkness Sanity’s Requiem, Silent Hill 2, Higurashi When They Cry, Signalis, and maybe Alien Isolation

Question What are the best horror games that you recommend?

I searched and I'm not finding anything that's really scary other than games I already played (like almost all FNAF, Alien Isolation, SOMA, Phasmophobia, etc, etc).

I would really appreciate it if you can recommend any horror games so that I can play with my friends/family on my home
