Hi, all. Today (May 24) is National Brothers Day, and tomorrow (May 25) is World Thyroid Day.
In the spirit of both days, please sign & share my petition for better thyroid care--in my brother's memory. My brother Jordan was a great big brother, and like so many of us, he deserved a lot better thyroid care than he got. He should've been diagnosed a lot sooner than he was and given better treatment all around--including better medicines. The lack of good thyroid care for too long led to his downfall, and I believe to his liver failing (he didn't even drink to have a bad liver).
Because of all this, plus my bad thyroid experiences and that of my mom & others, too, I continue to work on my thyroid petition called, "Thyroid Patients Need Better Treatment NOW" on Change dot Org.
We are getting close to 9,000 signatures....Let's get there & beyond, and I am still working on other stuff to get more attention to this petition, too, so maybe in the near future it will help us make progress. Please sign it (if you haven't already) and share the petition, too.
https://www.change.org/ThyoidBetterTreatment
Petition asks for better and earlier testing of both low and high thyroid (including the antibodies tests for Hashimoto's and Graves' Diseases which hit my family badly), better and more innovative treatments, more research, and better training on all things thyroid for doctors, so they can help us better. It'd mean a lot to get more support for this thyroid petition, and I can think of no better way to honor my brother Jordan for both National Brothers Day and World Thyroid Day than to make this petition successful, sooner than later. Please help in whatever ways you can. Thanks.
From Jordan's sister, SD-starr7 (Starr D)

Would you say that waxy, glossy skin and hairless shins are symptoms of hypothyroidism? Does it ever go away?

I been diagnosed with clinical hypothyroidism. Being 73 type 2 diabetic. Rode my bike in 86 degree heat with high humidity. When I got home had severe brain fog. Blood pressure skyrocketed and felt real weak. I started 25mcg of levothyrexine 4 weeks ago. It really scared me because I felt so weak and no energy. Wish this feeling would go away
Want to work again, but so weak and no energy this has rattled me with this happening to me. Any advice or any help that can put me at ease please!!!

Hi all— I made a post yesterday about being randomly severely hypothyroid after testing borderline hyperthyroid six weeks ago. My doctor hasn’t responded at all so I am kind of bouncing my thoughts around here.
I haven’t changed anything about my schedule with taking levothyroxine and am on a pretty hefty dose for my weight, so was totally baffled about my TSH (39 and fwiw my FT4 is on the low end of normal).
I remembered something about iodine and biotin being linked to thyroid function somehow and looked at the back of the multivitamin I started taking 4 weeks ago… it has 100% daily iodine and 500% biotin. I was told I likely have seronegative Hashimoto’s, and it looks like iodine can really fuck with autoimmune thyroid stuff. Is it possible for iodine supplementation to cause such a dramatic swing in TSH in 4 weeks?

edit: for clarification, yes i’m on levothyroxine ☺️and im getting my labs rechecked soon!
guys 🥺💔💔💔💔💔💔 i’m literally in tears right now because i’m so stressed about this and i feel awful. basically, i had part of my thyroid removed in may bc of thyroid cancer, my levels were never optimal, but were “in range” but after the partial my TSH was 8 a few weeks after surgery which isn’t terrible, but my brain fog has become terrible!
it started out with me forgetting why i walked in a room more often, but last month i couldn’t think of my coworker’s name. it’s Karla, but i kept wanting to say Cara. and tonight, another coworker, i called her Bianca in front of everyone and her name is Blanca, i KNOW her name is Blanca. we’ve worked together for months now. i was like “omg im so sorry i did that with…..Kara (Car-uh) and kept calling her Cara (care-uh)” & she was like “who’s Kara?” and i was like “She has glasses? omg KARLA”
has y’all’s brain fog been this bad or should i push more at the doctor? i mentioned it to them but this is bad 😣

Not everyone with thyroid eye disease has been diagnosed yet.
If your eyes have started to bulge, water, or feel sore, and you have been diagnosed with Graves, it could be TED. A clinical research study is enrolling adults with thyroid eye disease.

Got a message from someone in r/Hashimotos they found this post helpful and suggested I post here too, so here it is.
My mom has Hashimoto's. For years she was told her labs were normal while she felt progressively worse. She's been using her own spreadsheets to track her labs, medication changes, and symptoms. Her doctor has continued to be pretty dismissive.
A few months ago, I sat down with her and built something better. We ended up making a report:
Her next appointment wasn't magically different, but her doctor did acknowledge a dose change correlation with her symptoms and has since adjusted her medication. Hopefully it works 🤞🏼
I've turned our analysis into a template anyone can use. Three tracking sheets (labs, symptoms, medications) plus a prompt you paste into Claude or ChatGPT. Attach the file, paste the prompt, and it generates a structured doctor visit summary automatically.
Template here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1m2VcoT6mdUADKo0DMUuYX2ihdB008UOv/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=107188264494532813725&rtpof=true&sd=true
Note on Rule 2: I built this for my mom and I'm sharing it because it might help people in the same situation. Not here for commercial gain.
On privacy: The spreadsheet runs entirely on your own device. Nothing is stored anywhere I control.
One thing I've learned: The spreadsheet works but it's clunky. It involves attaching files, pasting prompts, re-entering things manually. A few people asked if there was a simpler version, so I've started looking into building a proper app. Early interest list at haloscan.co if that's useful. No commitment, just a way to let me know if it's worth pursuing.
Hopefully this is helpful :) I understand how difficult dealing with Hypothyroidism is, so have been trying to make it easier for my mom and similar patients in my free time.

Hi, do these thyroid results look normal?
TSH = 3.77 uIU/ml ; free T4 = 1.06 ng/dl ; free T3 = 3.1 pg/ml ; total T3 = 143 ng/dl ; TgAb = 16 IU/ml ; TPOAb = 13 IU/ml
I know that the 'acceptable' ranges for some things (like TSH) can be a little skewed, so I didn't know if the same was true with T3 or T4, and wanted to feel more sure about my results. I know that the antibodies for Hashimoto's are negative though, but thought I'd include them anyways so people don't ask about them.
I also already know that I'm iron deficient and vitamin B12 deficient, so I'm currently working on those. I just wanted to see if I should add thyroid issues to that list or not. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!!

Diagnosed 4.5years ago and labs been stable since, last 6 months I have had a huge increase in my heart rate. It'll peak to 146bmp at least once a day and for about 20 mins then sit around 70-90bpm the rest of the time. I'm active,I go to the gym, I've no idea why this is happening but I do think it happens around an hour after taking my T3. Has anyone experienced this?

I've been on .75 levothyroxine for around a year. I went from .25 to .50, then eventually. 75 over the last three years.
My initial symptoms were severe fatigue, joint pain, constipation, dry skin, hair shedding, etc. My levels were 7.7 when I started.
For the past 8ish months the hypo symptoms came raging back, even worse than before, so I assumed I need a higher dose.
My tsh came back at 0.7. I'm 61f and I don't know if that makes a difference, but that must be too low for me.
I cut back to 62.5 three weeks ago and wow! I feel human again. I also had weird mush brain and a continuous slight headache. All these symptoms are fading.
I am so happy that this is the issue and not something more serious. I seriously felt like death.
I'm curious as to if anyone has gone through the same and do you feel better with tsh over 1, or 2?

33/F I noticed in my generic blood test results that this number was quite high - I always feel cold, have dry skin, and suffer from depression & anxiety..
Is this test worth getting re-checked with a full panel? Or shall I retest in a few months.
Is there anything I can do to help change this number?
TIA x

Does anyone else with hypothyroidism experience really bad short-term memory loss?
I know brain fog and memory problems can apparently be related to hypothyroidism, but lately I feel like mine has gotten really weird.
Yesterday, I completely forgot the name of someone I had literally just talked to. Today, I somehow forgot my phone passcode and got locked out for an hour.
And this morning, I was preparing food , and then I suddenly realized office are closed today. I already knew were no ofice today because of holiday, but somehow I still went ahead and prepared everything because I completely forgot.
It’s also starting to affect my work. Part of my job requires me to speak a certain language and communicate with people, and sometimes I suddenly can’t remember certain words. I know the word is somewhere in my brain, but at that moment, it’s just completely gone. Then sometimes it comes back later like nothing happened.
I’m honestly writing this out of frustration because it’s starting to worry me. I’m still able to function normally most of the time, but these random moments where I completely forget something are becoming really frustrating.
Honestly, out of all the symptoms I’ve experienced, this is probably the hardest one for me to deal with.
For those who experience this, how do you deal with it? Do you keep a daily list? Use Notes on your phone? Set reminders for literally everything?
I’d really appreciate hearing how you manage it because I feel like I need to start writing EVERYTHING down at this point.

I had a full thyroidectomy in 2013. Currently, I have symptoms, including, muscle weakness, stiffness, in motion, tremor, and some step hesitation. I had a lot of stress in 2020 and my thyroid numbers went upside down. I finally managed to get them in good range especially the T3 free. It was especially low for many years. I’m being told that physiology has to catch up with numbers on paper and that takes time. A neurologist thinks I might have Parkinson’s. Is it possible that a low performing thyroid can produce symptoms that look like Parkinson’s?

Hey everyone,
So my mom got bumped up to 150 mcg Synthroid a few days ago. She only took it for two days and immediately got heart racing, chest pain, high blood pressure, and a high pulse. She stopped right away and skipped the third day. That day she actually felt amazing, best energy she’s had in like 8 months.
She was scared to go back to her old dose (137 mcg, which she’d been on for about two months) after all that, so she took a lower one she still had: 75 mcg yesterday.
This morning her blood pressure was high again. Now she’s not sure if she should take anything today or which dose if she does. Doctor appointment isn’t until Wednesday.
Anyone deal with something like this after a dose increase? What would you do while waiting for the appointment?
And also, it’s like she has a dose that’s too high but too low at the same time!! She has symptoms she used to have before being diagnosed like being super cold and vision changes, but her other symptoms point to 150mcg being too high… what’s up with that!

Hi all, I am new to hypothyroidism & seronegative Hashi’s so I’m still learning how this all affects things. I was dx’ed in January after blood test showed low FT4 and a TSH of like 49. I got medicated and everything has been fine more or less. 6 weeks ago, labs showed my TSH was 0.2. We took my levo dose down to 137mcg from 150mcg (stats: 22F, 135lbs).
In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been having issues with insomnia that seemed to be random. I reached out to my PCP and thought maybe I was still slightly hyperthyroid. She never responded, but I went in for a wellness visit today with a different doc who ordered new labs.
I just got the results back, and my TSH is nearly 40. I’m so confused, because this isn’t a symptom I usually correlate to hypothyroidism. Could it be possible that my hormones are just out of whack causing disturbances in my circadian rhythm/sleep, or can insomnia be a symptom of HYPOthyroid? I’m waiting to hear back from my doc about wtf is going on with my levels but was wondering if anybody has had experience with this symptom

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has ever experienced air hunger or that feeling of not getting enough oxygen even while on thyroid meds? When I looked this up, it’s seen as a symptom of hypothyroidism but every site talked about it as if I wasn’t already on medication, saying medication would fix it.
I suspect I need a dosage change, but my last labs a few months ago looked “great,” so not sure why i might experience such a drop in quality of life.
Last labs from July:
TSH: 1.187 uiu/ml
FT3: 3.19 pg/ml
FT4 II: 0.98 ng/dl
Also, if anyone knows a way to alleviate it get rid of this air hunger feeling, please share! It’s so annoying (and anxiety inducing)!
