Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)
  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

I just adopted this sweet boy last night from my local shelter. He is 8 weeks old and weighs 18.8 lbs. Mom is a staffordshire terrier mix around 40 lbs (I will post a pic of her as well). He has webbed front paws, loads of wrinkles and extra skin, and a long body. Any guesses on breeds? I did order a DNA kit last night!

She was picked up as a stray, but the shelter estimates she’s a “retriever blend,” about 2 years old. She weighs in at 33 lbs and has very long legs, a short, coarse coat, and tons of energy.

We have a DNA test on the way, that hopefully will provide more information about my little girl. She's 6 months now, rescued — couple last pictures are from her 5 month milestone.

I tried to include as many angles and pictures as possible. I see some pitbull/staffie sometimes, specially the eyes. But I am not familiar with the breed so it could be my imagination.

Anyone want to take a guess? ☺️

Edit: She's 14kg/30.86lbs.

Hes about 5-6is months. Hes smaller than he looks in the pictures, about 8-9 lb. We got him last week at the Humane Society.

Also, maybe help us with the naming?

His name at the shelter was Papi Chulo.

We’ve narrowed his names to these:

Dobby
Grogu
Yoda
Potato
Gremlin
Potato-Gremlin
Jimothy
Edit: Tony Tony Chopper
Moose

Thanks yall! 🙏

Another edit: my wife made his insta in the off off chance he gets a following 😬 https://www.instagram.com/dobbythepugtato?utm_source=qr

Open Rescue said Heeler mix

Adopted a 2-3 month old boy yesterday. Adoption center said he was a Heeler mix with likely another shepherd/herding breed. After being home for a while my girlfriend had concerns it looks more pit than anything. While the lady during the adoption said it could be mixed with something like a pit or even a Pyrenees (we have one of those and I don’t see it) since they weren’t 100% sure on the father. Even if that were the case I’d love to try and make it work while shes very unsure about it. Like I said we have a Pyrenees who’s a 10 month old female who can’t get fixed until after her first heat. He’s a 2-3 month old who has already been fixed (he’s already trying to hump still.) We also have 4 cats so we would really like to narrow down what he is so we can better prepare and get things straight now. Attached are photos obviously. The last 2 are not him but his litter mates.

We found him abandoned a few weeks ago in North Carolina. He’s 33 pounds and the vet thinks 3 years old. We have DNA test results pending.

A Pit-la-doodle! I was surprised her "main" breed is Pit Bull, but that breed is so common here in the US.

Her Supermutt breakdown was mini Poodle, German Shepherd and Australian Cattle Dog.

Another DNA Guess!

This is my 7.5 year old gal, Navy.
(Sorry for the million photos)

If you don’t want to read the rest, here’s a TL;DR at the beginning: DNA My Dog tests suck, Embark is great, guess Navy’s heritage!

We recently got our 3.5 month old puppy, Storm, DNA tested with Embark. Having gotten such thorough and precise results for him, we were inspired to get our older girl tested. I’ve had Navy since she was 8 weeks — she was a rescue from a reserve in Washington. She has been a Canadian gal ever since!

When Navy was a year or so I did a cheaper DNA test from DNA My Dog, and have since read a lot of negative reviews of that particular test. Since having our pup, Storm, tested with Embark, we felt it would be beneficial to pay for the DNA and health screening for Navy as well — especially since she is entering her senior years now.

When I did the original testing for Navy, the results it gave were German Shepherd and Flat Coated Retriever. I recently looked back on them and there seems to be absolutely NO percentages. Weirdly, I have a very vivid memory of seeing her percentages at the time though. I swear it originally said she was 93% GSD and 7% FCR. I have since found no evidence of those numbers. Has anyone else had that experience with DNA My Dog? Confusing. Either way, the Embark test is officially mailed off and we will hopefully have the results in a few weeks.

I’d love to hear some of your guesses for my sweet Navy girl!

Some info:
- 45-50lbs, 22” at the shoulders
- Long cream coat with some more blonde/tan colour on her ears
- Her mom looked very much like a GSD and her siblings had mostly typical GSD colours!
- Hiiiigh energy, anxious, barks at anyone who walks past HER house.
- Definitely loves people more than dogs.
- High prey drive!
- Stubborn
- Overall best girl I know

I saw the mom and she was a black retriever with a white belly but my new baby had brown ripples with white parts too! the shelter said the mom and litter came in as stray with no known father. I just want to make sure i don’t neglect my puppy’s needs because i wasn’t aware of her breed.

Was told he is a beagle American bulldog mix.
He’s 6 months old, was severely malnourished when i bought him as he had a heavy worm infestation, which vet said potentially stunted his growth a little. (Last photo was a month or two ago so he was a lot smaller)

Open Any guesses for Remy? Grandma Betty’s Animal Rescue resident

This is Remy, he is a resident at Grandma Betty’s Animal Rescue in Julian, CA. He was pulled from a euthanasia list a few years ago at about 4-6 years old and there was minimal/no previous info about him from whoever surrendered him to the shelter. I think he is between 7-9 years old, he’s heavy for his size and is verrry front loaded. My guess is English Bulldog and something else, he’s got no tail pocket or deep face wrinkle, and his snout is a tad longer than full English. He’s built like a very short sausage.
