NATURE Seems we are the last generation to witness fireflies. When last do you see them?

I was thinking about these bugs few days ago and I struggle to remember when last I saw them.

I remember I did a paper in my AP Biology class on light pollution and fireflies and the sudden student teacher we had failed me because ,"The assignment was to write about some kind of pollution".

She literally told me "light pollution isn't real". and treated me like a conspiracy theorist the rest of the semester.

I litwrally had to bring a recorder to class to record her lectures and how she'd go after me for my paper on light pollution.

I'm now starting to realize she was super maga and purposefully put herself into school science teaching to muddy the waters.

Mind you, this was duing 9-11 when these cretins had carte Blanche to commit atrocities.

Recently failed my Calc class because of a powertripping calc professor. He enjoyed failing students and literally only 2 people in my class passed his final. The rest all failed. Reported him to the college and they didn’t give a fuck

There is a bit of wiggle room in my experience. In my exams we had to show every step we did to get an answer, and could get partial credit on problems we didn't get the correct answer on, or points off a correct answer if something in our work was funky (like forgetting to put + c at the end of an indefinite integral). How much partial credit you got was generally up to the whim of the professor. That being said, failing almost an entire class just reeks of malevolence.

Light pollution is a very different kind of pollution. Just because it uses the same word doesn't mean it's the same thing.

Yeah it was weird.

I was straight As all through every grade and suddenly when this student teacher appeared in my AP class, she kept giving me Fs and Ds on all my assignments.

I had to bring up that the normal teacher was there for the first 4 weeks and I had an A.

We had another student teacher in my AP English class who wanted us to listen to Rage Against the Machine - The Ghost of Tom Joad when we were reading Grapes of Wrath. Got straights As with her too.

They ended up hiring the lady who just would fail me no matter what I did.

Like literally I graduated with honors and I had to explain how one semester my grade was a D. AP Chem and physics whoch were after AP Bio, straight As.

LoL I feel your pain. It reminds me of the time my grade school science teacher had everyone naming plants they knew and didn't believe me when I said there's such a thing as Joshua Trees and scoffed. 🙄 No internet at our fingertips back then to prove them wrong immediately. The state is currently competing for dead last in education so go figure.

I had one in my 7th grade when I argued with my physics teacher that we can't see light itself, what we see are the objects that light reflects off of. If we can see light, then we can't see objects at all, only the pattern of light they reflect/emit.
My argument was that if I shine a laser(not directly into our eyes), we can't see the laser unless there's smoke to make it visible, so we are seeing the smoke not the light itself. Anyways, my teacher laughed at me for that without explaining why I was wrong. The devastating thing was my crush laughed at me asking if I was blind in front of everyone which made me completely lose confidence in asking anymore questions to any teacher. I didn't know about photons and shit at that time so I didn't know why I was wrong.
Took till university to regain that confidence where I had to ask questions or else I'd not understand anything.

The teacher asked us to name trees we knew the name of. I was sitting in class, coincidentally behind a classmate whose name is Joshua. And I said there are Joshua Trees. I lived in California before and moved to Oklahoma a few years before this, and we visited Joshua Tree National Park all the time. The Oklahoma teacher looked at me like I'm an idiot (at the top of my class in grades), the Josh kid spins around in his chair and looks at me really hard and I'm not laughing. Why is such a thing trivial just a few states over? I said I'm serious, there are Joshua Trees in California! And the teacher said No there's not!, and then moved on while everyone was still staring at me trying to figure out what just happened. The teacher was wrong. I still think about that every time I see a Joshua tree, decades later.

My mom got me an English tutor in 7th grade because I truly did need one. Once a week I got one on one instructions and it really helped a lot. At the end of the year, my English teacher in school pulled me aside and asked me “where did you get this paper from?” When I informed her I wrote it, she told me that I couldn’t have wrote it, “because this is what smart people write.”
After my mom called the front office and spoke to the principal. Then later my tutor came in and verified that they watched me write it, my teacher gave me a C. Apparently smart people get Cs.

I had the exact opposite.

I was in remedial English in freshman year because you picked your classes graduating from middle school.

I hated myself and "applied" to all remedial classes.

Within 2 weeks in each class, they "promoted" me into Advanced Placement, etc.

It is so sad that unfortunately people with inflated egos seek out positions where they can wield even as little power as a teacher has. Instead of realizing that their job is helping students to learn to and grow and one day cultivate a better society.

There was a class I always ditched in HS because it was boring, the teacher was dead set on failing me, went out of her way to do so. I literally had a 4.0 in that class even without being fully present. A good teacher would realize that a student is not being challenged and advocate for them to be promoted to a more stimulating class.

lol I failed my HS English class because some pretentious teacher put a copy of Great Expectations in front of a 13 year old and gave me shit for not connecting 😂

I grew up and became an English teacher to not have kids have to deal with that- and I now like Dickens, but that novel was not it for younger kids lmao.

You should have told them light pollution is a real thing, you should look it up you might learn something.
