What your brain knows logically doesn't always translate to what your body does during an emergency. Thats why we had earthquake drills often in school growing up in a place that did experience earthquakes.

Yup. One of my professors was paid by the govt to show up after mass shootings and such to help people cope. He told me that so many people are killed because they see someone with a gun and take a deep breath in which can make them a 30% large target

Huh? So taking a big breath in makes you 30% larger? Are we talking humans or puffer fish?

I understand that to mean *stopping* to take a deep breath ...and *not immediately reacting* to the danger and seeking immediate cover or concealment.
