The implosion of the Titan submarine (OceanGate) was so rapid that the pain wasn't even registered by the brain. They didn't feel anything at all. Utterly instantaneous.

Damn, the Medical Findings read like a Quentin Tarantino movie scene.

Don't look at it, trust me. There are some animations of what exactly happened without the gore if you're really curious but suffice to say it's nightmare fuel.

Hopefully they were gone before they realized what was happening. That right there is why that career path pays extremely, extremely well.

i usually handle gore pretty good and it doesnt startle me a lot but im only in that situation when it catches me by surprise. 99% of the time i will refuse to look at it.

i really do not want to literally see what happened here, but i do want to know how it looked like

I don't want to ever witness that but at the same time I kind of do out of morbid curiosity.

The crazy thing is that it's so insane that I don't think a simulation showing it would be believable. Like it just simply wouldn't do it justice, it's hard for our brains to comprehend something so instant.

I can look at pretty much any photo. Though, I imagine that would be different if I knew the person. Otherwise, it takes video... and even then it takes sound unless the video is truly egregious.

Ive seen some crazy shit irl. The worst was probably the murder scene when I was 6. That's the only time I've seen someone that was killed. He was leaning on his steering wheel having been peppered in the back with a shotgun. It was half a block from home. I followed the first few cop cars and got there before they set up a perimeter. I was on the treelawn right next to the passenger door. I understood what I was seeing, but not the magnitude.

I was also severely abused. I had a bunch of friends die as a teen, and I was around to witness several severe injuries, So, I have experienced trauma first hand. So, maybe that's why pictures don't bother me.

It comes off as trying to sound profound/intelligent when they're just copying what they've read. And the reality is that these people just got pulverized. They didn't become "physics", they just fucking died. When you see it parroted on every thread about Titan it comes across as performative, like upvote my super profound intelligent comment, but you know they're just repeating the same thing they saw in 50 other threads about this. It's basically a meme at this point.

"Become physics" just means that the normal ways you discuss people dying - suffocation, poisoning, organ failure, blood loss, etc, become irrelevant compared to there just suddenly not being a body there anymore due to an extreme physics event. In the Titan implosion, the difference between the human body and the ambient seawater would have almost instantly been rendered irrelevant, as that amount of pressure collapsing in would liquefy the body and disperse the molecules.

You missed the point entirely - nobody was confused about the physics. In the context of the original xkcd it was lifted from it's a clever/funny way of describing an absurd physics problem. In the context of basically turning the deaths of people into a meme it's dehumanizing and cringe as fuck. Those are two completely different points.

I think part of what is irritating about it, at least for me, is that physics is always happening, the implication in that statement is that you "become physics" when you die but you are always "being physics", you don't convert to physics upon death. So it sounds smart, but the moment you think about it it stops making sense

To me it just reads as a pithy way to establish which lens is most relevant to analyzing the scenario. They don't have to be mutually exclusive for a biologist perspective to lack the same relevance a physicist perspective has

Idk seems to me like biology is nested within physics (with chemistry in the middle). Like all biology is also kinda physics, but in extreme situations where this joke is made the biological processes are just irrelevant and all that’s happening is physics playing out. So yeah I agree it’s overused, but it’s pretty accurate

From my research we appear to be energy. Bound together by molecules reduced to slow vibration. Darwin was incomplete in his argument, it appears evolution is more guided by the harnessing and dissipation of energy.

I think I'd fundamentally agree with that notion, my understanding of physics (being neither a physicist nor a biologist) is that physics is the study of how that energy behaves and interacts, but i could be wrong

You can make that argument about everything though, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are all so closely interlinked. The separation is more for our own convenience than anything else.

The point, in the original context (being in the way of a laser powered by the sun's entire output), is an event happening so rapidly and with so much energy involved that biological processes don't matter at all..

Given the timescales involved here, it's just about applicable.

I guess that quote has been solidified in the "Reddit Smart Guy Stock Phrases" portfolio now. travoltaswinkinbhole (what a Reddit Smart Guy name, btw) saw this post and thought "Oh shit, this is my chance to say the physics thing."

1 - Lack of originality fucking sucks.

2 - the parrots undeservingly want the credit for having the wit come up with that. (I've seen one person repeat it mentioning they deserve no credit).

3 - It's boring as fuck reading the same thing over and over again when it contributes nothing to the discussion.

4 - when facing the same fucking comment multiple times you begin thinking it through and realise it doesn't actually make all that much sense. It only worked in the original setting because it was profound and witty, when drawn out into the cold to be observed over and over again it fails in it's profundity.
