I wonder if after the first fly is dead every subsequent fly is like oh shit, I smell food. And as more die the temptation to come check it out increases.

I think thats exactly how this works. Flys are attracted to rotten smells.

Not necessarily, it appears to mimic a light source which flies are attracted to.

Flies actually avoid other dead flys and being surrounded by dead flies makes them die early. A science experiment proved this.

I'm aware of this study. I still think the flies would smell crispy insect and come check it out. They can't tell it's dead fly from a distant.

Also the OOP was probably breeding flies just to zap them with their contraption.
