Buying Advice Should I Buy?

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hi all,

New here because I have never owned a Jaguar. I am in the market for a new daily vehicle and am looking mostly at classic old cars. I love the look of this 1986 Jaguar XJ6, but don’t know the warning signs to look for or what constitutes a good deal on this kind of car. Any thoughts, insights, or experiences are appreciated. The listing for the car is below and includes a video that shows off the engine.

Check out my Jaguar! New to Me: 2000 Jaguar XJR

Post image

I posted a few days ago saying I could not feel much of a performance benefit from an XJR and was leaning towards a VDP....well since that post, I found a clean low miles XJR that I could not say no to, and thus, now I own a 2000 XJR. (Perhaps I will get a VDP as well).

What are must do maintainence on these? I have no records relating to the secondary timing chain tensioners so I intend to do those right away, and replace waterpump, maybe transmission oil change.

Owner said plugs and coils were done last year.

What else is a must do?

Mechanical Help 2021 F-PACE electrical/electronics issues

Hi everyone, I have a 2021 Jaguar F-PACE and I’m having a few strange electrical/electronic issues that I’m trying to figure out. First, the fuel flap pops open immediately whenever I unlock the car, and I can see the actuator extend when I lock it and retract when I unlock it. However, I’m having an issue with the car locking/arming properly, and I’m wondering whether the fuel flap system could be related to that or to an issue I’m having with a Pivi Pro software update. The car is offering a software update that takes around 35 minutes and requires the vehicle to be locked with the alarm armed, but the update keeps refusing to start (assuming its from the fuel flap not closing when car is on).

I’m also noticing that the side mirrors sometimes fold or unfold randomly when I turn the car on or off, even though I’m not touching the mirror controls. On top of that, the A/C isn’t working properly across the vents. The two vents on the left side blow cold air normally, but the two vents on the right side don’t seem to blow cold air properly.

Has anyone experienced anything similar on a 2021 F-PACE? I’m wondering whether these issues could be related to a low 12V battery, a faulty module, wiring/electrical problems, or perhaps a software issue. Any advice on what I should diagnose first would be greatly appreciated.

Mechanical Help Secondary timing Chain Tensioners Upgrade - Guidance needed

Upvotes

I have been trying to research the secondary timing chain tensioner's replacement. My car has the plastic tensioners, and this is a common fail point. Research from forums and online indicates that some people only change the tensioners from plastic to the upgraded metal ones, not disturbing the existing chains and guides because the originals are better than any aftermarket stuff. However, some people suggest once you're in there to change everything. For those that have done this, what do you recommend? Further, the kits go from a hundred dollars to nine hundred dollars. Is there anyone that has done this and recommend a specific seller?

Buying Advice My late father’s pride and joys. Am I foolish to auction them with no reserve?

Post image

My dad died a few years ago and was a jaguar fanatic all his life. He had over 50 cars at one point and pretty much owned every model they made a some point through his life.

He died leaving 10 of his favourite cars as he couldn’t part with them even though he couldn’t drive them much in his later years. I’ve sold 7 privately through Autotrader etc as they were more modern and easier to value.

The last three are the oldest and more niche cars. I found them almost impossible to value accurately with people giving vastly different opinions so I decided to go down the auction route and put them on Car & Classic.

When listing they suggested reserves but said if I took the gamble of listing without any then it generates a lot more interest and their figures say overall selling prices are higher. They’re now listed but the family are very worried that we could undersell them and they could sell for fractions of what they may be worth.

Grateful for any opinions if any has experience of this and whether it paid off or backfired. Thanks.

Buying Advice XK8/XKR X100 for fun weekend car

I've been wanting XK8/XKR X100 for a long time and now I feel ready to pull a trigger. However, I am still kind of afraid.

Is XK8 X100 really that bad in terms of reliability as people say about old Jags? I know that this is 30ish yo car so anything can happen but does the maintenance really differs that much than let say Mercedes or BMW from the same era with V8 or V12?

I've watch numerous clips and read numerous articles about buying used Jaguar XK8. Apart rust and electrical issues (which I think would be universal to any 30 yo sports car from a premium brand or am I wrong here and XK8 is somewhat special here?), every soources list also nicasil and timing as potential weak points. I am interested especially in nicasil part - is it really that bad? Many sources add that if the car survived that long and runs good it means that the nicasil issue has been taken care of, is that true? Also is there a way to tell during pre-purchase inspection that particular car might have problems with nicasil and timing?

I know that the solution to these issues is to buy facelifted XK8 with 4.2 but there are some problems here. First I like pre-fl looks more. Second problem is that where I live fl XK8 are extremely rare. XK8 is very rare car to begin with but there is a dozen of ads listed anyway and maybe like 5 coupes which I exclusively looking for. Facelifted XK8 happens maybe once-twice per year in the listing and usually it is convertible. Third problem that stems from previous one is that fl version is much more expensive - prices match or even exceed pre-fl XKR prices.

I do have a sensible, still fresh, fuel friendly daily so I don't really care if Jag will have to sit for a few months in a garage. Besides, I have a toddler so I won't be driving XK8 that often anyway. In the past I had a plethora of stupid cars, including daily driving American muscle V8s for 8 years that weren't even officially offered on my continent let alone in my country. However, cost of maintaining such whim is still something to consider so I'm curious about others experience with XK8/XKR X100 in 2026

Discussion The Type 01 will be a larger longer F-type with 4 doors.

I was walking back to my f-type convertible yesterday and thought I should vomit my opinion here.

I have said this elsewhere online before, months back. And I am now more convinced. I have watched every recent camo video and used some tools to try to analyze the curves and what not.

The new Type 01 will be very similar to an F-type coupe, especially gen 2. Just way longer, wider, and 4 doors. Edit: this is about physical looks only.

At the end of the day all that controversy will be for naught. I think I am still going to get one. I am also convinced the company is destined to close shop.

Cheers.

Mechanical Help Jaguar F-Pace 2022 Loud buzz sound

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Recently I've noticed my Jaguar F-pace 2022 UK Petrol model when idling making this buzzing echoing sound that sounds like its coming from the back, I would have said near the petrol tank area or somewhere near the back.

I hope the sound comes across on the short clip but its bit hard to hear, so apologies.

It seems to be a new noise I've noticed but then I have recently got in the habit of driving with music off so might have always been present and just as Its silent now I noticed it.

Any ideas what it could be or anything to worry about? Had some service done in May and no issues.

Thank you

Bought my very first Jaguar - found a 16 plate with 34K miles! Feels totally brand new.

Absolutely blows away by the quality and features, there’s more than enough power when you need it, it’s super smooth at low speeds.

I’m still in the honeymoon period but can anyone advise me on any preventative care I should be saving up for?

I saw some Apple Car play mods that would bring it right up to date and was thinking of some light exhaust mods to increase the exhaust purr.

I also saw some black grilles and wing mirrors on the official Jaguar site, might look good against the red?

But all in all a properly outstanding car - couldn’t be much happier with it, really wish I made the jump sooner.

I detail as a hobby so will post pictures of when I get it looking brand new.

Husband's 2017 XE 3.0 started having coolant leaks we couldnt track. We just refilled the resevoir and made plans to diagnose it. Well, it got really bad really suddenly. At 125k miles he was having the Low Coolant warning 5 min after driving at operating temp.

Well this is the issue. The seams failed on the thermostat housing and it was spewing coolant quicker than we could add it. Luckily, there's an aluminum upgrade for cheaper than the dealer cost ($60 v $295). Dont wait like we did and we were forced to pay 5x for a shittier part. Just take the 3 hrs and replace it.

Here is the upgrade https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DK2Y1R2C

Im not getting anything from this besides the joy that Jaguar wont be ripping people off as much, hopefully

Mechanical Help Jaguar XF 2.0d timing chain advice needed

Dear all,

I'd appreciate your advices please.
I got Jaguar XF 2.0 diesel, year 2017.
189K km.
I have an audio of engine cold start.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/11-yjJtosPgOG4Uj8JFGBJKtSzQgHIEcg/view?usp=drivesdk

Do you hear a timing chain issue? I am not sure. But what i am sure that sometimes during first 3-4 minutes driving i hear some "different"/harder/harsher kind of engine noise than normal engine noise. It goes away after 3-4 mins.
But since it has 189K I should get the timing chain replaced very soon right?

I please need an advice about which brand of the timing chain set should I purchase?
Original set is around 1000+ euros.
While other brands are around 400-500euros:

FAI - FAI TCK357VVT / DA3413 set
or
Febi Bilstein set

These two are fine brands I think, but still I wonder the quality comparing to Original JLR parts?

In meantime I googled out that BorgWarner is actually the JLR supplier for timing chains.
I see there are different sets to purchase.
There are ones with: 2 chains, five chain guides, 2 tensioners. I found a Borg Warner one.
The other kits (Febi Bilstein and FAI - FAI TCK357VVT / DA3413 ) include additional parts like gaskets, three sprockets and VVT unit. But I found no full Borg Warner set like this.

Anyways, what is recommended to be replaced here? With or without three sprockets and VVT unit?
What about other brands? I know original JLR is best, just wondering about the quality and recommendations of other aftermarket brands for timing chain kits.

Thank you so much!!
