‘A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You’ was the wonderful story of two virgin novices who met each other for the first time through an arranged marriage. The story outlined their purity and awkwardness in trying to make their marriage work. The drama was set in 1936, right before World War II. ‘A Calm Sea and Beautiful Days with You’ is deliberately slow as it becomes a wonderful character study of these two newly weds. Season 2 will continue the storyline. The drama was well received by the viewers, plus it won several post production awards in the Tokyo Drama Awards 2025 and the 124th Television Drama Academy Awards (Spring 2025).

I don't know why, but I've really fallen in love with Japanese stories and the way they are willing to tackle almost any subject, from completely ordinary topics to the most taboo and uncomfortable ideas, without necessarily treating them with shame or judgment.

I know Japanese dramas sometimes get criticized for their cinematography, and I agree that there are areas where they can be lacking, although I feel like there has been a lot of improvement lately. And Japan has always had some really well-made dramas anyway. But for some reason, Japanese stories give me a kind of dopamine rush and emotional impact that I rarely get from other dramas. I don't really know how to describe it, but they affect me emotionally in a way that sticks with me.

I recently watched Wandering, and I thought the premise was crazy, but the execution was fantastic. I really loved how the movie explored the way people judge you even when you haven't actually committed the crime. The protagonist only helped the girl, yet people still looked at him as if he had done something wrong. I also loved the way the girl herself felt around other people and how conscious she was of the way they looked at her. And the way her fiancé treated her was honestly awful.

What I especially loved was the platonic relationship between the two leads. It felt like they were two free souls who could only really feel comfortable and happy when they were together. Their relationship didn't need to be labeled as a conventional romance, and I found that much more touching than a typical love story.

I've watched quite a lot of Japanese dramas and movies already, and I'm going to watch Yurigokoro soon. I really love how Japanese writers can come up with completely insane ideas and still execute them in a way that feels compelling. The Village and Gannibal are good examples of what I mean.

So I really need recommendations for movies with the craziest, most disturbing or unusual premises you can think of. I don't know why, but Japanese movies seem to give me a level of suspense and tension that I usually struggle to find in K-dramas. I'm looking for those movies that make you think, "What the hell am I watching?", while still being genuinely well-written and emotionally engaging.

hello!!

i'm new to jdramas. the one that got me down this rabbit hole is gokusen, which when i saw it was newly added to netflix in my country, i just decided to randomly watch. since then, i’ve been binge-watching jdramas!! i love how fun and meaningful they are.

but i specifically fell in love w/ jun matsumoto! he's so charming!! since gokusen i've watched 99.9 criminal lawyer, the 19th medical court, hana yori dango s1 (plan to finish next week), and bambino. i plan to watch more of his works!

aside from watching his dramas, i decided to look into what the people think of him. and...it's a mixed bag??? some find him a good actor, some find him amateurish for someone so experienced. it's confusing, and i can't tell for myself when i watch him because i think the language is a bit of a barrier (and that he looks good no matter the role lol).

i'd like to hear from the people. what's your impression of matsujun as an actor? what dramas have you enjoyed/disliked him in?

>> I think for those of us who have watched the 2005 dorama, it would be more than a little disorienting to see fresh faces playing teenage Haruto and Aya. It seems like this movie's concept was crafted around bringing back Ryo to star in a movie remake of sorts. It's nice to see Haruto has made it as a doctor, but other than that, this teaser isn't convincing me to catch the movie.

So nostalgic to hear Remioromen's Sangatsu Kokonoka again though! It's still as good as ever. 🥹

I've watched The Ring: The Final Chapter, and I was wondering if there were any horror dorama series that I should watch.

I'm currently on a rewatch spree and decided to rewatch this one too. It's been some years since I watched it and I genuinely forgot how batshit crazy this series is, but in a good way. It definitely brings a smile to my face whenever she does something crazy and I honestly love how she cares so much about everyone.

new to jdramas but i’ve already watched quite a few. because i’m young, i watch dramas with young casts and coming-of-age stories. however, most of the ones i've watched had men as main leads and a male-dominated cast.

i'd like to watch dramas with a female main character/s and the story revolves around a “feminine” premise. anyone know a good “shoujo” drama?? it could be romance, coming-of-age, and/or slice of life. not really into movies. thanks 💜

Soar High is SUCH a good drama!

i picked it up to help with my anxiety and it really did wonders to calm my nerves.

however, i started to get annoyed with Haruto and his holier than thou attitude.

[SPOILERS UP AHEAD]

i get it, he was jealous of his sister mai for getting a lot of attention but she was very sick to the point where she had to be sent away. and even then both mai and his parents still loved him and supported his endeavors. his parents worked hard to send him to an expensive school and he was still unappreciative.

fast forward a few years, his dad’s successful company is struggling stay afloat thanks to the economic crash in 08 and haruto is still rude to his parents. despite that, his parents were kind and understanding, especially his dad. mai begged haruto to help her parents financially since he’s practically a millionaire but he refused! like what? at least just say it to your parents they’d appreciate the kind gesture and they’ll most likely reject your offer but it’s the thought that counts.

anywas, i just finished episode 66 and i’m SOBBING! the dad died and i’m so upset because he was SUCH a good dad and he just wants to make his dreams come true. stress killed him and i’m thinking if only haruto helped his dad or was kind to him.

of course, i’m not blaming haruto since we’ve never had his pov on the show and we don’t really know much about him but i seriously don’t like his character.

also, sorry for the long post and rant. i get too invested with a show i like 😂

a bit of a long shot but by chance is the trick series in Netflix Japan have English subtitles? I'm also interested in the Galileo movies with Masaharu Fukuyama but I'm not sure if the movies are also have English subtitles. Hi! I recently finished watching Hanako to Anne and I'm trying to find the spin-off special 「花子とアン スピンオフスペシャル 朝市の嫁さん」 (Asaichi no Yomesan) from 2014.

I'm not sure about this one.

I've liked Kanna Hashimoto in every show/movie I've seen her in. That said, she is the only person in this show I actually find amusing.

Admittedly I've only just finished ep.5, so perhaps I'm being hasty, but so far it almost seems more annoying than funny.

On the plus side, it may contain more instances of the word バカ than anything I've watched to date.

So, does everyone else like this one? Am I isolated in grinding my teeth occasionally (mostly when Konta is onscreen?).

Stumbled across the show on Netflix and fell in love with it. The soundtrack, the heart, the love story, it all was so sweet to me. Any recommendations for similar shows? I specifically liked the fact that it was a romance show (which I’m guessing most Japanese dramas are, I’m kinda new to this), but also the fact that the characters were sweet and likeable, and the beautiful jazzy soundtrack. Any recommendations (preferably on Netflix) would be greatly appreciated.
