Announcement Update to KoreanVariety

It was brought to my attention that "reposts" weren't allowed in the group, so when I went to look, I saw other options were disabled too.

Therefore, I enabled the following features for the group:
- Links
- Images/Galleries
- Videos
- Polls
- Reposts

I'll enable them, but if others here start finding them annoying, just let me know & I'll make another post for comments from everyone.

I should of noticed something was off when other subreddits had these features and never saw them used here.

Announcement Reddit Automod Removals

Thought I'd give notice that reddit's automod is removing posts that reference or link sites, most likely unofficial ones, that stream TV shows and movies.
I noticed a lot of removal notices by reddit concerning posts asking for sites to stream shows.
So if your post is asking for a site to stream a certain show, or if your reply has a link to a site, it'll most likely be removed by reddit. I noticed that even mentioning a site's name is causing the reddit automod to remove posts.

Mods don't have abilities to override reddit's removals.

Also, apparently there are only 2 active moderators here..... hubwub & myself.

Question & Help Dice Puzzle on Busted! S2E10

Post image
40 Upvotes

I’ve been rewatching Busted on Netflix and on S2E10, there is a briefcase that needed to be unlocked using two puzzles. The cast solved the lock using the other (simpler) puzzle, and the answer was 2412.

But I noticed that they didn’t fully explain the solution for this one, except that the first number corresponds to the number of images with a pip on the center.

I tried solving it myself to no avail. I even asked AI for help, but it also can’t find the reasoning behind it. LOL.

How can you get 2412 with these die?

News The Community Season 2 is getting subbed! (+ Game Info)

I just discovered KOCOWA has a page for the upcoming season 2 of The Community! IT'S GETTING SUBBED!

https://www.kocowa.com/en_us/season/130359963/the-community-2-invisible-hand

Subbed Trailer (requires login to view)

Unsubbed Teaser

Unsubbed Trailer

Unsubbed bonus video of 4 participants from S1 taking this season's Value Code Test (spoilers for S1!)

https://www.topstarnews.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=16167234

https://blog.kocowa.com/the-community-2-invisible-hand-raises-the-stakes-with-a-survival-game-where-everything-is-up-for-trade/

This season appears to be more focused on the economy/morality rather than political ideologies like in S1, and the game seems to have been completely revamped to suit. Now, four teams of varying sizes and resources attempt to survive in a "free trade zone" where deals and negotiations are king.

Teams/Residents

White Team

In control of "Gems" ("Jewels"?), which are directly tied to the prize money (kind of like garnets from The Genius).

  • Gary Kim - Board Game Designer, President Of The Korean Board Game Designers Association From 2003-2023, CEO Of Gary Kim Games

  • KNUCKS - Dancer, College Of Social Sciences At Chung-Ang University (Bachelor's), Sungkyunkwan University (Master's), Previously Participated In Physical: 100 S2

    • Game Of Blood S2 9th Place (Eliminated Day 7)
  • Park Seseung - Influencer, College Of Business And Economics At Chung-Ang University (Bachelor's), Yonsei University (Master's), Previously Appeared On My Sibling's Romance

  • Shin Hyewon - JTBC Socio-political Reporter, College Of Education At Seoul National University

  • Lee Han - Gender Equality Activist

  • Lee Hyunseon - Former Special Forces (707th Special Mission Group), Previously Participated In Siren: Survive The Island & Steel Troops W

Blue Team

In control of "Life", tubes of blue crystalline things. As can be seen in the trailer, every resident must submit 1 Life each at the end of each day or they get eliminated.

  • Lee Soomin - Actress (Tok! Tok! Boni Hani; Twinkling Watermelon; My Dearest)

  • Lee Jina - TV Personality, Aspiring Actress, Former Corporate Executive (Startup CMO), Rich Upbringing (Father Has Assets Worth 10 Billion Won), University Of Hong Kong, The Pot Of Greed, Peking Duck, The Only Returnee From S1

    • Genie From The Community S1 (Advanced To Final Day, Joint 6th Place, Final Prize Money ₩1,793,000)
    • Game Of Blood S3 13th Place (Eliminated Day 8)
    • Jenna From Golden Spoon War (8th/Last Place, Not Selected For Final Teams)
    • NO EXIT GAME ROOM Round 1 Participant (Did Not Advance To Winner's Match)
  • Lim Jieun - Author

Red Team

In control of "Credits", which act as in-game currency and allows for production of the other resources. They're compared to arcade tokens in the article, so perhaps 1 Credit = 1 try at a game?

Black "Team"

In control of food (lol) and "information".

  • Jung Jaeho - Entrepreneur, Influencer, IQ Of 150, University Of California Berkeley, Previously Appeared On Heart Signal S2
    • G From Black Sheep Game (White Sheep, Eliminated Day 4)
    • Hexagon Game 3rd Place (Eliminated Round 5/Semi-finals)
    • The Influencer (Eliminated Round 1)
    • Synchro Game Joint Winner (Team Won Final Round)

...If anyone was wondering, no, this seems to have very little to absolutely nothing in common with season 1's format. As such, obviously barring potential references to season 1 as well as having one returnee, I think it will not be required to watch season 1 to have an understanding/appreciation of season 2, which is rare to be able to say about survival shows and in this case, a good thing, I suppose. I'm really excited this is getting subbed, season 1 is legit one of the best seasons of reality TV Korea has to offer, so I trust that they'll cook with season 2.

The season will premiere in just a few days on September 4; KOCOWA's blog states subs will be available September 6.

Announcement Copyright Infringement Notices & Removals

It's come to my attention that a certain show is being removed by Reddit due to copyright notices.

Currently, "Noona Is a Woman (Season 2)" has been flagged and all posts removed by Reddit.

I'm not sure about the future of copyright notices with regards to Korean Variety & Reality shows, but for now....I'll let Reddit remove posts with copyright notices until I'm contacted about it.

I'm not sure how I can moderate which shows have a copyright, or what constitutes an infringement.
Links to Netflix or other streaming sites, or do magnet/torrent links fine?

It's bringing me back to the old days when anime subgroups where getting nailed with notices.

Discussion I Live Alone | Ep 662 | 20260828 | Kian84, Code Kunst

We started this week with Kian who has been upskilling his cooking (with success!). He really has progressed a lot in how he's preparing food compared to years ago, but he's still Kian so he doesn't follow set portions lol. One thing that caught me off guard was the cutting of veggies on the floor and putting things in tupperware on the floor. He had a cutting board but it still felt very weird to me to do that on the kitchen floor. Then he went to fix some clothes (and Yuri calling him "shabby") and put his shoes on fire (is this some korean military technique or is this actually widely known?)

Code Kunst segment was nice and chill with some eating and then him creating a new frame for his glasses. Funny how he was geeking out with the swords/axes together with the owner of the place and the other person was trying her best to just keep focused on her project. Also got brutally demoted from "hawk" to "chicken" by the optician. (Also nice to have Ryu Hye Young as a panelist!)

Next week: Shin Young abroad in Japan and Minho taking care of his bonsai trees.

Discussion How much of the “success” in K-variety business shows is actually transferable to a normal business?

I had a bit of an epiphany yesterday while watching a C variety show and thinking about the foot traffic. It made me start questioning something I’ve noticed across a lot of K-variety shows: how much of the customer traffic and business success we’re shown is genuinely organic, and how much is because people know they’re walking into a TV show where celebrities are working?

Take The Genius Paik S1 in Napoli. I remember them putting tables outside, having the staff eat outside, using the video billboard of them eating, etc. All of these were presented as clever marketing strategies to attract customers, and they probably were. But I kept wondering: how effective would those strategies actually be once you remove the cameras and celebrity factor?

Would a random person walking down the street see a brand-new restaurant serving unfamiliar cuisine, with no established reputation, and spontaneously decide to walk in? The same thing happened in S2, where the restaurant eventually became very busy.

Then there’s Jinny’s Kitchen 2, where the queues and waiting list became almost a daily occurrence. Again, I can’t help wondering how much of that is the restaurant itself and how much is the appeal of “I can go eat at a restaurant where celebrities are actually serving me.” I thought S1 felt a little more organic because you had families, colleagues and people meeting up for dinner, so it still retained that feeling of a normal restaurant.

I think Youn’s Kitchen did this particularly well. In S1 and S2, you could actually see them struggling to get customers. People would walk past, look at the restaurant, hesitate, check the menu and eventually decide whether to come in. S2 especially showed the curiosity of people living in that remote area and how they recommended the restaurant to others. I also loved seeing other restaurant owners/staff come to eat there because it felt like genuine word-of-mouth rather than “I’m here because I know a TV show is filming.” Even that guy who joked about Park Seo-joon’s Instagram followers being higher than his while PSJ was serving him felt like such a normal, organic interaction.

Youn’s Stay is slightly different because it operated primarily through reservations, so it wasn’t really testing spontaneous foot traffic. But even then, I wonder how many people would have gone out of their way to stay there if it weren’t for the celebrity factor and the knowledge that it was going to be on television.

I started noticing the same progression with Unexpected Business. S1 felt very organic because they were in a remote village, serving local residents and regular supermarket customers. By S2, the restaurant started attracting people from surrounding areas, and by S3 the flow of customers sometimes felt almost too convenient — one group leaves and another seems to arrive immediately, to the point where I started wondering whether there was effectively a waiting list that we simply weren’t seeing.

And interestingly, the customers themselves seemed much more camera-conscious in the later seasons. In S1, we got those lovely mundane conversations you would actually hear in a small shop. Later, there seemed to be more of the standard variety-show conversations: “How long have you been in the US?”, “Your Korean is still good!”, etc. Even the atmosphere felt different.

Then there’s Bonjour Bakery. They were selling in a small town with an older demographic, and there was a reason a bakery wasn’t necessarily the obvious business for that particular location in the first place — the local population’s age and existing tastes/preferences. Without the celebrity factor and the grandchildren bringing their elderly family members along, would that business genuinely have attracted enough customers to thrive?

Same question applies to Kang’s Kitchen, Coffee Friends, Hyori Homestay, Kian B&B, Jae Suk B&B and so many other service industry/ hospitality variety shows.

The one that feels like a different case to me is Korean Hostel in Spain, because the location itself already had a built-in stream of potential customers: pilgrims walking the route. The celebrities may have helped, but there was already genuine foot traffic there.

So now I’m wondering:
When we watch these shows and marvel at how successful the restaurant/store/business becomes, how much of that success do you think is actually transferable to an ordinary business once you strip away the celebrities, cameras, publicity and curiosity factor?

And does this change how you view the “business genius” moments in these shows? Are the celebrities genuinely demonstrating brilliant business ideas, or are some of these strategies only working because the biggest marketing tool is standing right there on camera? 😂

As a SONE it seems they edited the songs out. Even the dance! It did the episode injustice in my opinion.
