Alternative OS Why does it feel like Linux is suddenly exploding in 2026?

I’ve been seeing more and more people switching to Linux this year, especially gamers. Bazzite, CachyOS, Linux Mint, etc. seem to be getting mentioned everywhere.

Why didn’t we see a massive shift like this earlier? What changed, or what finally pushed people to make the switch?

I know the Steam Deck was probably a big factor in showing people that Linux gaming is actually viable and that Linux isn’t as painful as it used to be.

But what else changed over the last few years that made Linux suddenly feel like a realistic alternative to Windows for so many people?

We're taking off... right up until all the "influencers" suddenly and inexplicably start making videos titled "Why I'm going back to Microsoft Windows".

And it always comes down to "No Adobe software."

I mean, I get that content creators kind of live in a bubble, like everyone else, but not everyone on the planet uses Adobe software.

No, but everyone uses professional software that isn't available on Linux.

In their personal life? Definitely not even close to all people. Tons of people just game and do some web browsing.

It was an example, my man. Most people don't use professional tools on their PCs. Most people use web browsers, maybe Spotify or similar, some light MS Office tools etc. And yes, some people game. A lot more people game than use professional tools on their personal PCs.

I mean, "media creator" is one career that has a long way to go for Linux. Like yeah you have DaVinci resolve, but you don't have any of the Adobe stuff or Premiere or anything like that.

And no. GIMP is not a Photoshop replacement.

Agreed. I have played with Linux for ten years and it’s still not a Windows’s replacement for me. I want it to be.
