I just wanted a hot dog Doctor’s appointment scheduled at 9:00am, still waiting almost an hour later

Post image

I have a lot of doctor’s appointments, and I know how busy and hard these people work. I’m not mad at them and I’d never be rude. I know it’s not on purpose. Nevertheless, it’s still a bit infuriating to make time for a scheduled appointment, arrive 15 minutes early (required), and then wait this long with not even an acknowledgment of the delay from anyone. Sigh. 9:55 now, still waiting.

Edit: I really appreciate all the comments! The doctor ended up coming in shortly after 10. This was a specialist ortho appointment for my shoulder. Still no acknowledgement of the delay, which would’ve been nice, but I’m more annoyed that my concerns were pretty much brushed off again during the whole 3ish minutes he spent with me. I know waits can get long, I wouldn’t care as much if the doctor had at least seemed somewhat concerned with my issue. Sigh… gotta love American healthcare!

I always left with a pair of glove-udders after an appointment as a kid

I’ve had nurses take them from my kid due to hospital policy. Bs.

When I got my wisdom teeth out I hugged the nurse and told her they did a great job… I also asked if I could take home a pair of gloves from the recovery room. (I was obviously well medicated) They put a bunch in my purse. My brother was my ride and was laughing his ass off.

I imagine looking into the purse the next day after the drugs wore off and being like “why tf are there gloves in here/ why did I want gloves!?”

I was like what do I need these for?! And then they ended up being used for random stuff like when I cut hot peppers etc. I think I was like 16-17 or so.

I occasionally go by restaurants and ask the kitchen for a box of gloves. It's so nice to have on hand.

I mean, you can just buy them.

Easier to just ask nicely

When I got mine out there was a puppy calendar on the wall in the room where I woke up, I guess I asked the nurse to remind me to get one cause I liked it so much, when I got home I found a note in my pocket it was a prescription paper that said “reminder— get a puppy calendar!!!”

The 2 things that can ease my anxiety

Same! I mediate in the morning after yoga before I begin my adulting and before bed to chill myself out before bed. My dog is also my favorite person (other than my husband) in the world. She’s an old lady now and I can’t even fathom losing her.

Love your user name too.

I find it so strange at the lack of standardization for dental care. Like why was I allowed to keep my wisdom teeth but others were told they couldn't because it's a biohazard?

u/MartinisnMurder 1d ago

No idea! I know they wanted to take mine out because I previously had braces and there was a concern that as they grew in more they could alter my teeth etc.

I had an urgent care give me a little baggy with nearly a full box of gloves and some tape, to make showering easier, when I sliced my entire thumb open. Thought it was very sweet of them lol

I had oral surgery a couple weeks ago and I stopped on the way to buy a deck of cards. (Long story.) I had taken Xanax, so by the time I got to the office I was feeling really nice. For some reason, I took the deck of cards with me into surgery. I remember saying “I probably won’t need these” and handed them to the assistant right before the IV sedation kicked in.

A few hours after I got home and panicked and asked my husband, “Did you get my cards?”

Some people have emotional support animals. Some people have comfort blankets. I have a deck of cards. 😂

That’s so funny! It’s crazy what we find comfort in when we need it. 🤣

When a hospital makes a rule that seems stupid, it’s usually because of a complaint, incident, or lawsuit. There was a hospital sued for an incident where a kid swallowed the glove and asphyxiated to death. Now we have to guard the gloves.
We also recently had to take hand sanitizer out of the ER rooms because patients were drinking it, thinking it’s only alcohol.

u/SchuminWeb 1d ago

Yeah, it's not like the hospital can still use them at that point...

My mom did this once. We went for some pediatric appointment for my 5 year old self.

I remember my mom was getting pissy that we had been waiting almost an hour and there was literally nobody in the waiting room. Honestly, my mom is awful and rude, and I think they may have been making her wait on purpose.

Eeeeeither way, she handed me the box of gloves and told me to start blowing up the balloons! We were going to have a surprise party for the doctor and nurses!

Girl, I turned that entire box of gloves into goofy hand shaped balloons. The doctor wandered in just as I was asking my mom for another box of 'balloons'.

Doctor was visibly upset lol He told my mom we would need to reschedule with no explanation. We never went back to that doctor. I don't know if we were let go as patients, or if my mom just decided to switch my doctor, but I think about that day every time I put on my mechanic gloves to work on something. The goblin 5 year old in the back of my head is just screaming "BALLOOOOOOOONS".

Honestly even if your mom was a bitch, it's also incredibly unprofessional to have somebody waiting 60mins past their appointment time without an explanation. Like after 15 min max the office admin should have stepped in to say "I'm sorry the Doctor is late coming back from their shift at the hospital" or "I'm sorry the doctor is with another patient who needed more time than was initially planned".

52

u/jerseygirl1105 23h ago

Your mom may be rude, but waiting almost an hour would cause anyone to become a bitch.

32

u/Your_Cat_In_Disguise 21h ago

She's naturally a bitch. Under the right conditions, she can be a super bitch.

7

u/Resident-Gold-3446 1d ago

Yes, especially if there wasn't anyone in the waiting room.

9

u/Ordinary_Ad_7992 23h ago

Yeah, I'm also with your mom on this one! Bitch it no bitch, no one should wait that long at a pediatrician's appointment. Kids do not have the patience for that!

5

u/Impressive_Clock_863 1d ago

Good idea! Just love that balloons all over. 😂

3

u/Your_Cat_In_Disguise 21h ago

They covered almost the entire floor lmao

Those rooms you wait in with the table are super small, though, so idk if that's worth anything

Haha love this story! Doctors think their shit don't stink. Eff 'em. Your time is money too.

2

u/Hydroborator 12h ago

Eff that doctor. I would be so elated and join in the fun if I walked into that room! Life is too short!!

I had to take my 3 year old to urgent care the other day, and THIS was the thing that was able to get him to calm down.

5

u/RetiredBSN 20h ago

When I worked in the ER and kids were involved, I'd blow up a glove, draw an eye on each side of the fingers and a smile underneath the thumb. It usually got them calmed down a bit.

My kids’ doctor has a sign that says “please don’t make balloons out of the gloves.”

Yeah, you may have gone to medical school, but I went to clown college, and you can’t stop me.

8

u/Ordinary_Ad_7992 23h ago

Usually my daughter-in-law or son are able to do the appointments, but on one of those rare occasions when I had the honor of taking them, my grandkids' ear doctor was making balloons to keep them busy while we talked! He was fun!

Just float one out into the hallway every 5 minutes or so.

I did that once!
