/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Visiting? Stop Here First!)

Hi all!

Welcome to r/MontereyBay

If you're visiting, moving here etc, this page should serve as a hub to answer many of the most frequent questions we see- where should I eat? What should I do? and so on.

Been meaning to get this page going for a while now after doing the original food-based one a couple years back.

On this post, I'll be linking to a number of community recommendation threads where we've gathered / curated advice for those looking for it.

These are not exhaustive lists, as there are many great places to eat, drink and visit in the area. They are just the recommendations that users made when the threads were posted. If you feel something is "missing," please realize that is why. Other websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also helpful for finding information from a broader range.

Where to Eat - (From 2022) - Thread

Where to Visit / What to See (Tourist-Oriented) - (In progress) - Thread

What to Do / See - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Day Trip Recommendations - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Have a suggestion in regards to how to make this post better / more helpful? Please leave a comment below.

/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Where to Visit / What to See - Tourist Version)

Hi all,

In an effort to build out the new sticky post, we are back to ask for your recommendations for the following category - "Where to Visit / What to See" - oriented for tourists visiting the area.

There will be more threads in the coming weeks where we will share similar recommendations for people who are living here, among other helpful ones.

For this thread though, we would like to gather your thoughts on where to visit and what to see for people visiting the area.

I'll be organizing it in the following way (since I think it will be the most helpful based on how people usually ask questions when they post here)

-Must-See/Do (Think the Aquarium, Big Sur etc. these are the things you'd recommend first if someone has never been here before)

-Highly-Recommend / Great Option (This category will serve as the most broad catch-all. Not something you'd consider a must do, but would be a great option for most visitors depending on their preferences).

-Extras (This category will be maybe more niche-oriented. Things you want to throw out there because people would enjoy it, but probably won't appeal to everyone.)

When replying if you could include the following information, that would be awesome:

Associated Cost - (if applicable)

Time Commitment - (1 hour / Half-Day / etc)

Website - (if applicable)

Family Friendly (yes/no)

I'll post an example for the Aquarium to get things started.

Thanks!

Family photographer 10/9-10/11??

Hi there, my fam and I are going to be in town for a few days from Houston (10/9-10/11) and I would love to use the opportunity to have some professional family photos taken while we are in town. We are not high maintenance at all, and wouldn't need an extravagant session by any means but I'd love to take some high quality photos of us to capture the beautiful Monterey scenery. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, I've found a lot of wedding photographers but no family photographers. Thanks in advance.

Economical place to stay

I have a laat minute trip opportunity and need an ocean trip to recharge my soul. Solo trip, options are limited by availability and funds. Goals are hearing/seeing ocean, ideally from room, whale watching out of Moss Landing, a balcony with a book or a nature trail, visit to the aquarium. Don't care about night life and not a foodie. Not set on any particular place, will have a car. Would love feedback on the following places which appear to be my choices:

Inn at Moss Landing

Captains Inn at Moss Landing

Pacific Inn Monterey

Lovers Point Inn Pacific Grove

Cannery Row Inn

Any to 100% stay away from?

Tattooer: Dave Sinor moving back to Monterey Bay

I will be returning to Monterey Bay mid October and taking clients at Harbor Light Tattoo. I specialize in large scale tattoos with a focus on full sleeves as well as cover ups and transforming scattered spot tattoos into cohesive well tailored singular motifs. I have been a Tattooer for over 20 years and have experience with all bodies and skin types, including scar tissue, stretch marks, burns and even skin grafts. I am a huge fan of incorporating native flora, fauna, and aquatic life into a Japanese/Traditional aesthetic. My work experience allows me to be proficient in designing and drawing tattoos directly onto the skin that are tailored to naturally fit your specific curves and structure.

I am a naturalist and avid fisherman. My portfolio reflects this intentionally, and I would really love to continue doing more nature inspired projects! The more unique and personal it is to you the better! Let’s tell your story and represent your interests through tattoos!

Thank you for your time and consideration! I hope to speak with some of you soon and schedule your consultation.

Faerie Folk, the progressive folk trio from Portland OR, will be touring California Sept. 17th - Oct. 11th of 2026.

We'll be arriving to Monterey about halfway through the journey, to give a 2 hour performance unique to this night at Wave Street Studios!

A folk music group created by pianist/composer Troll Hart, Faerie Folk's repertoire is based primarily in traditional Irish reels and jigs. The group also explores soundtrack excerpts from popular medieval fantasy media, along with original neo-classical and folk music compositions.

With the incredible Jotunn Aldas on the violin/fiddle and the lovely Joy Joye on vocals, Faerie Folk transports listeners to a realm beyond the world of man with their musical air of majesty, refinement, and devotion to Mother Earth.

Sporting influence and expertise from decades of classical, jazz, and Celtic music backgrounds, Troll, Jotunn, and Joy are an inspirational group brought together by love of organic music, and are excited to share that love with you!

This 19 show tour will span the whole of the state of California, from Arcata to San Diego. From concert hall, to rock venue, to house show, Faerie Folk will be sharing their organic music magic with the people of California's small towns and big cities alike.

We hope to meet you there!

How difficult do you think it will be to find Sergio Galvez Perez and his daughter and do you think there will some sort of standoff?

I'm not sure how difficult it is to find someone on the run but since it's a serious crime and it's all over the news it seems like it would difficult to hide. I don't know if you can gauge how dangerous he is but considering the charges he's facing and what he did you can bet he will do anything.

Where to donate board games?

I’ve got a bunch of board games that I’d like to donate. Would love to hear some ideas of where they can go next to provide the most enjoyment. Pubs, libraries, rec centers? Please share a suggestion!

Crazy road rage Monterey!

Does anyone recognize this truck? This guy is driving recklessly and almost rear ended and then swerved in front of us to cut us off. He was cutting off a lot of cars, driving towards monterey, by reservation exit. His license plate is OG-5006. We have a newborn baby in the car so you can only imagine my anxiety. He even put his window down and threw some hand signs at us. Help me find this guy!

Herbal community

Hello! I will be moving to Monterey soon and unfortunately will be leaving behind my whole herbalism community and my herbal center. Obviously the first thing I did was look up herbal centers near and around Monterey but unfortunately they were only places like shops and Chinese medicinal herb shops that I wasn’t particularly looking for. Does anyone know of any events or even community centers that have the sort of vibe like Oshawa Farm or Berkley Herbal Center? Thank you!

Edit: Id also really like recommendations for farmers markets! So if you have any I’d appreciate those as well : )

Insane prizes for FREE BINGO at Otters Den (Mon Aug 31st)

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hi all!!!
How craaaaaazy are this week’s prizes?? I’m so stoked for you guys, every week I’m just in awe of what this has become 🥹🥰.

For those who don’t know what this is about, I’m Ninja (yes legal name lol), local bartender, event host, and small business co-owner. Well, I started hosting a weekly free bingo night at the Otters Den in Marina (I also tend bar there). What started as plant prizes and a few other goodies my hubby and I put together for y’all, exploded into a buuuuuuusy PACKED HOUSE and super fun community event. So it sparked an idea… why not involve local small businesses so they can have the opportunity to advertise to this amazing crowd (and beyond, like all of you who are reading this post!). Small businesses need the love, and this has been such a cool and unique way for them showcase themselves. In turn, you all benefit by playing FREE BINGO! Win win win!! Right?

Alls we ask, is please support the Otters Den and staff by making a purchase(s). Doesn’t have to be alcohol, we have delish mocktails, etc but it is only fair (to our small business) that we keep our tables and chairs available for our paying customers.

This is a 21 AND UP VENUE. I’m sorry but there are zero exceptions, please have your ID handy.

DATE: MONDAY AUG 31ST

TIME: 7pm-9ish. HOWEVER, seats fill up faaaaaaast, literally folks start rolling in at 5 to grab spots. Unfortunately I can only do reserved seating for parties of 10 or more as there’s a lot of movin and groovin that has to be done for that lol.

Location: Otters Den, 3166 Vista Del Camino in Marina (next to Wells Fargo)

For questions, or perhaps you’d like to get your business on the list for next week, feel free to text/call me. (4O8) 469-1O41 ☺️

Looking to connect with fighters/gyms in Monterey County for a video project

I’ve been getting into cinematic sports videography and want to put together a piece featuring local fighters or a gym in Monterey County. Anyone open to being filmed during training or a match? Happy to share clips/DM examples if you’re interested, just don’t want to post external links here.

Photography.

Hi I’m looking to see if anyone will share their favorite local photography spots. I’m a new photographer and I have a couple spots already that I love the lighting and views. Just curious if anyone would like to share theirs? I know it’s hard to ask this question when other local photographers usually don’t like sharing theirs spots & I totally get that.

Cannery Row restaurant recommendations

Oh boy… I’m here for the week and the food/snacks are not great so far. Bubba Gumps and Chocolate from Colorado? Tidal cafe was awful and LoiueLinguinies mediocre at best. Any good restaurants/food/snacks on Cannery Row?
