Having a shipload of fun designing the lighting for the first community theatre production of Pirates! the Penzance Musical. This is the look I’m working on for the top of Act 2, the Nightmare song. Since we have a thrust stage that makes things interesting but very immersive, I’m using the WHOLE theatre as my canvas.

When I saw it on Broadway last year, I told my spouse that I really wanted to do this show when it went to licensing (which it did last October) We secured the rights in December, and we open at the end of next week. Added fun: my spouse is the stage manager.

So to be honest, this post is essentially just a hail mary. A group of friends and I are trying to compete in small group musical as an event in our upcoming district thespian competition / festival. However, we have really struggled in finding a number that fits our group well, and we need to make a decision ASAP. We are comprised of 3 girls and 4 guys, making 7 (which as many of you man know is the limit for small group, meaning we can’t add another person). Our voice parts are as follows: 2 Altos, 1 Tenor, 1 Soprano, 1 Bass, 1 Baritone (I believe), and I am a Baritone/Tenor.

We are hoping for a fun and unique song choice, but we also want to get a superior. We all really want a more talking, rhythmic, and dance heavy number because only two of us are great vocalists. We really need suggestions and fast. We are open to any suggestions but we also have to have our choice approved by our director. We are also open to songs with a few main parts and backing vocals and just using some of our cast as ensemble. WE NEED HELP 🙏🙏🙏

Random question, but preferably a name that doesn’t include the word “Bible“ but is still commonly enough used that people will probably know what I mean if I mention it.

Lots of our cast and crew are Catholic/Christian and today when I mentioned referring to the show bible for the first time for something a couple people got quite upset at the term. Yall have any suggestions I could replace it with?

If you cant tell, I ask reddit a lot because financially I am not able to support getting a coach. I do however go to a performing arts school, so I get my training from there.

Today we had our auditions class where she helps ready students for auditions. She started the class off by telling us how competitive it is, which I assumed, but she gave us a guidelines of signs we shouldn’t audition, the main one being if you’ve been a lead only a few times in your high school time.

I’ve only been a lead once just this past summer, and my first show was my sophomore year. Should I let this be my sign to stop?? If theres anyone who’s gone through the process that can help me I’d greatly appreciate it.

I auditioned for a highschool version of Hello Dolly! i auditioned for ernestina money and i thought i did so well especially on the axting front. Having gotten a ton of laughs and gasps during my monologue from the production team.

i know the saying that sometimes you see an actor who you love and don’t need to call them back. Also maybe for hello dolly there isn’t sides for that role.

However no callback and i know maybe i can still get cast in that but is it really a good shot or do i not get my hopes up?

My school is doing the official version of The Little Mermaid musical. Ariel, being my dream role since I was 4, is who I am auditioning for. It is currently me and one other girl in the running for Ariel (and she happens to be the "favorite"). Are there any tips anyone has to really pull Ariel through?

Note: I have already learned all her songs and have been since 2023, so I have a long history with them. I also already have done character research, this is truly just topping it off.

I just got cast in my first production! I’ll be Linda in Evil Dead, the costume committee doesn’t have specific shoes for characters to wear, only that they will be okay walking around/dancing on fake blood.

Does anyone have any recommendations for shoes (ideally sneakers) that might work? All I seem to find are copy and pastes of generic sneakers or work crocs.

Hey y'all, I have an amazing opportunity to perform in a masterclass for a well-known composer at my college, and my professor asked me if I would like to sing a song of the composer rather than what I was originally assigned in the course. I told him I would consider it because that feels like too cool of an opportunity to pass up on. He gave me two options, one being a very sexually confident/aggressive song, and the other being a very pretty, ingenue style song. I think I have decided to do the sexy one because I have a lot on my plate, and while they are of similar lengths, it feels easier to memorize and work on. Plus, I think it matches my casting essence well in MT as I am often put in "mature" or "confident" roles regardless of the theatre I audition at. (Helena Landless, Melpomene, yada yada)

My only problem is that I haven't done a lot of legit sexy roles. It would be more of a challenge than the singing or receiving feedback, so I would love to know if anyone has advice on how to feel confident when singing about something like this. I'm known for making bold choices, but I'm certainly not well versed in this area and would love some tips to not feel creepy when my peers may see me shaking my butt or crawling on the floor haha

I'm auditioning for drama and MT courses this year, and I've spent way too long looking for that "divine intervention" material that would magically show off my range. Workshops start soon, I need my package ready, and I'm completely stuck.

To anyone who's actually been through this and gotten in: how long did you stress over your choices, and how did you finally know they were right? I have this mental block where if a piece doesn't come with months of agonizing struggle, and searhc for it, it somehow doesn't feel earned or right for me.

i am a senior in high school and currently navigating the mt audition process. i’m only applying for around 4 bfa programs (but applying for many ba programs) as i would like to stay near home, but im looking for advice on the dance portion of the audition. i am a “strong mover” and have dabbled in many types of dance but mastered none (im a beginner in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, folkloriko, filipino traditional dances). i am most confident in my tap skills, and continuing tap classes this fall, but through research ive seen many people say that’s more of a wildcard skill. does anyone have any tips or recommendations on where to start? what styles of dance are best to audition with and what types of songs should i be looking at? the choreographer at my high school is willing to help me workshop something, but i’m not even sure where to start. help!!!!

So my college is doing Rocky Horror, and I’m really hoping to get cast as Janet. I was looking for some audition songs that fit her vibe? I tried All the Men in My Life from Evil Dead, but I wanted to see my options!

I've been auditioning for local productions over the past couple of years and I've yet to be cast, but I don't know where I can improve. My main concern is that I don't know where I should be looking during the audition. I've tried picking a spot above the heads of the director and looking at each person like they're the audience, but I don't know if either of those are the right approach. I also tend to be very stiff while I sing out of nerves, but if I choose a ballad should I be moving much anyway? If anyone has any tips or suggestions, please let me know l.

I am a musical theatre performer and singer and I am going to drama school to train professionally in 2 weeks (which is a large reason why I am making this post). I have been singing my entire life and consider myself to be at a strong level going into full time training - I am a mezzo soprano with a contemporary tone, and my forte is usually belting, whilst my head voice is sometimes weaker and unpredictable, though it is something I am improving and working upon.
Over the past year and a bit I have been suffering bad sinus issues, almost like chronic sinitus, which has really affected my singing. At first I believed it to be allergies to dust or hayfever which caused post nasal drip and dryness in the throat, but after several doctor visits, nasal sprays, and a camera down my throat, I am still having the same issues. Some days it is worse than others, but it feels as if I constantly have phlegm stuck in my throat affecting my head voice (I usually sound quite breathy when my sinuses are flared up) so am always having to swallow, as well as post nasal drip. My voice also feels really easy to fatigue, usually giving up and giving me throat pain in an hour or so.
I have tried several methods to alleviate these symptoms which are beginning to affect my mental health, such as daily sinus rinse, nasal spray, air purification etc. I don’t know what to do anymore, and I’m fearing this will affect my vocal development at drama school and moving forward into the career that I want to go in to.
If anyone has had similar issues and could offer advice, I would really appreciate it. It is really frustrating that I am unable to practice or do what I love due to this issue that never seems to go away. Thankyou 💕

I (13f) recently did 13 the Musical at my local theater and after closing, I realized my high belting isn’t as strong as it was. I used to be able to sing songs like World Burn easily, but recently I’ve been straining when I belt high. For context I played Charlotte, and she has to sing very high strong belty parts and I think it may have damaged my voice. How can I “heal” my voice?

hey everyone! as the caption says, i’m wanting to audition for orin scrivello from little shop of horrors for my school’s musical. but there’s two problems;
i am a trans man with a high pitched voice and have been placed as a soprano I.

i have the audition tomorrow and i was wanting to know what song i should pick and how i can sing a bit deeper/gritty.

the theatre teacher explicitly said it cannot be a song from the actual musical thought and it HAS to be from another musical. what songs and advice would you recommend?

I am a junior in HS and have a really strong background in singing and acting and consider myself to be very strong in those two areas, but I definitely lack dance experience and training. I’ve been taking some lessons but am planning on apply to school for musical theater, and I know how important dance is for that process, and was wondering if anyone has tips to become a better dancer fast? or if anyone knows how much that will ruin my chances of getting in to a school?

I’ve been super worried about it so any advice or just ideas would be greatly appreciated!
