Has anyone here tried a Miyawaki microforest here? I saw that there's a group who made one in the lower 9. I have a 16' x 50' side yard and am curious if it would be feasible down here.

Would you have plants or plant clippings you'd like to share? This can be herbs, ornamental-like plants with big flowers, plants who have made New Orleans/Bulbancha home and any others. We are happy to pick up this Friday or weekend or over the next weeks!

The plant space is a mix of speckled sun, full sun and a little spot of shade. We have a mix of plants in the ground and potted plants so can easily follow your guidance on care.

Context: Our garden has not fared well this summer- first some incompetent tree people cut down our neighbor's tree destroying the neighboring gardens and backyards in the process; second that shock along with the strength of the summer sun burned more plants than previous seasons. Thus, we are in the process of rebuilding and would like to include plants from our community, especially people who have already tended.

The catch: we work in the garden with beautiful young children a lot and are big on relationships with plants. Basically you and the knowledge you share about the plants will live on for awhile (and likely beyond) as we learn the plant personalities.

I need to chop this golden pothos because 1. It’s lost leaves in the middle and 2. It’s dragging on the floor. Unfortunately, my prop skills are lacking so I thought I’d offer the bounty to someone who could put it to good use. Does anyone want the bottom few feet of growth? I’ll be in town on Wednesday and will happily deliver.

Hey y’all, I planted these seedlings for my fall raised bed. Only problem is I didn’t label them and now I can’t tell which is the cabbage and which is the collards. I’ve been looking at pictures online but I’m still clueless. They both look exactly the same to me. Can anyone help me identify these lil babies? Also, would appreciate any growing tips as this is my first time trying these veggies.

Was curious if anyone has any tips for slowing down the growth of a well established creeping fig vine. I do not want to kill it. I would just like for it to stop growing as fast. Is this possible? Anyone have tips? Thanks!

Just wondering how the shortening daylight affects them around here and also just love to hear others’ more general experiences growing sunflowers in New Orleans.

This is my first year getting them to grow, and I did a mixed packet, and I did a little succession planting of the procut variety in the early summer. The procuts are the pollen-free kind that are often used in bouquets- a one bloom and done plant. (I was a little let down by their short vase life!) Once I try a plant, it’s like I can never have enough background info about that plant, you know?

I have a conundrum. I generally plant my garden for the butterflies and caterpillars. I love watching them and helping them out by having lots of unsprayed food and host plants.

However

In the last year or so I've gotten into citrus , I was planning on indoor outdoor trees.

The grapefruit dropped all of its leaves in late spring just before I brought it outside and has recently grown some very nice ones. Not a lot.

Now I have found more eggs and caterpillars than there are even leaves to support if they all start eating.

Plus this might kill my little tree.

May I ask help with an alternative food source I may offer them to get them to stop 🤷🏻‍♀️😖🙃

Jefferson feed & HD/Lowes are the only place I’ve really found around here that has veggie starters.
Even if starters aren’t available currently (it’s too hot for starters isn’t it??). For future reference would be fantastic!

I’m relatively new to gardening and this is my first time growing eggplant. The leaves on my Japanese eggplant have started looking off and I’ve noticed there’s tiny bugs and these black dots under the leaves. I did harvest 2 eggplants from this plant yesterday. Should I be worried?

Hey y'all, I'm sure you've heard about the cold and wet El Niño winter that is coming. What are y'all doing to keep your plants alive over the winter? I mainly have a container garden with succulents and I'm concerned my plants are going to rot. We've mostly survived previous winters with only bringing them inside when it drops below 40. Any other tips? What are y'all doing?

Wanted to level up my plant skills and knowledge for a long time. Can't figure out how to make the house plants I have thrive and looking to increase my native plants. Can anyone recommend good in person learning opportunities and one to get new plants on the cheap? Thanks for any help!

I just purchased a house a few months ago which is on a double lot, and also has a decent sized back yard. Property was unoccupied since Katrina, and the owners only kept the front maintained, leaving the back an overgrown mess. I’m realizing I am in way over my head, it’s been such a struggle just trying to remove the invasive trees and vines. I have a vision for the land but I’m feeling increasingly lost on how to get there. Should I just scrape out everything with a bobcat and start over? Sheet mulch everything? Or keep slowly removing unwanteds and installing desired plants? I really use a consultation with someone who has dealt with this type of situation and could help me jsut get it under control.

It kind of made my heart ache to tear down the wild morning glory vines that draped so rustically and archaically over this beautiful old greenhouse. Like something out of a forgotten garden. This little hidden away ruin in the Irish Channel that nature reclaimed.

However, pragmatism did get the better of me and we were able to transform this forgotten backyard pottery studio into a space where something creative could happen once again.

Sometimes gardens ask us to choose between what is practical and what is poetic. My favorite moments as a gardener are when those two things find a way to become the same thing. New Orleans and her gardens sure do capture the heart. Wanted to show yall!

Not a fan of grass. What would be something good to replace it with that doesn’t require as much upkeep as grass? Not sure about flowers/fragile plants since people will getting in and out of their cars. Thanks!

Had to get the measuring tape out. I planted this is March or April, can’t remember. It was about 7 inches tall when I put it in the ground. Apparently it loves my yard and heat. This is an east facing front yard.

EDIT: I topped it at like 7 feet maybe 2 months ago to encourage it to grow wider and thicken the trunk.

I’m looking at buying a peach and persimmon tree. I know persimmon trees do well here so I’m curious if anyone has any recommendations on varieties to get. I haven’t had a perfectly ripe persimmon so I’m not totally sure yet that I love them but some people swear the flavor is excellent. For peach trees I’m curious in anyone’s experience growing them….varieties, maintenance, pests, etc. Thank you!!

I think I have a fruit tree problem. I’m currently working my way toward every possible fruit tree New Orleans can handle.

Looking for some advice here. Left for 3 weeks for work in July, just got back and while my BF was watering the garden/plants etc they seems to just get scorched still and are now half dead.
It’s mostly tomato plants and summer squash. Should I rip it all up maybe get it ready for fall or anyone think adding various plant foods and water they maybe can bounce back? Feels like watering is a waste of time now but maybe I’m just feeling defeated ATM. Any advice would be appreciated 🙏 also side note any plants, vegetables, flowers etc I can plant now suggestions would also be welcome

The lower leaves of my fig are all covered in this white fungus, withering and attracting flies. The leaves at the top of the tree look fine. I am not sure if this is because all the rain, or what? The yield of fruit was normal, if not more than usual, even though the fungus had already started by then.

How do I treat it? There is a lot, literally the full bottom half of the tree's leaves. I'm not sure if I could cover it all with neem oil.
