Admissions Megathread [Megathread] Prospective Students, Applications, and Admissions For September 2026

Dear prospective students,

We appreciate your interest in NYU! Feel free to ask questions about the school and the application process in this weekly post!

Do take advice about your chances of admission with a grain of salt:

  • An application is a holistic process and we can’t see everything you submit.
  • We don’t actually know what standards the admissions office uses and what they care about, we just have anecdotal evidence.
  • Please direct information-sensitive questions to the NYU Admissions Office.
  • NYU's admission rate drops every year, so even the anecdotal evidence we do have may not translate well to this year's applications.

NYU paused CPT - here are a list of internships you can do without it

Upvotes

Hey! Wanted to share this list of cool things you can do without a CPT. We handpicked almost every single thing (not a dead AI list).

https://rootsimmigrationhelp.com/internships

We're two international students ourselves - hopefully it's helpful :) Let us know what you think!

90% of the list is public, but for a few parts we charge $4 to cover the cost of maintaining the list / protect against scrape. If that's an issue, please DM me and I'll send you the list for free.

Academics & Research Waitlist for Math Course

Upvotes

Why is a class like Calc 3 so full?? I’m on the waitlist at position 16, just a day before classes start. Usually for such a low position, I’d be immediately doubtful but because it seems like a popular math course and big lecture, what do you guys think my chances are to get in?

Grad student at courant, are there any places where table tennis is being played on campus. Old Reddit posts say that there are tables in BAF but when I checked they weren’t there.

NYC buddhist organizations/resources on or near campus

hi guys -- i'm a senior from nyu steinhardt, and for context i grew up in nyc metro area and queens with a lot of older chinese (specificially sichuanese) relatives that practice mahayana buddhism; while my relatives aren't that devout as other chinese buddhist people, i did grow up going to my fair share of temple visits/taking care of my aunt's guanyin altar/celebrating things like ghost festival, etc. i mainly identify more as spiritual now, but i want to make an effort to learn more about and participate in the very regional buddhism my extended relatives practice. i know that nyu global center of spiritual life has buddhist prayer rooms, but when researching buddhist life on campus all i only see are student clubs that went defunct years ago or bobst archives/professors that focus more on buddhism from anthropological/research perspectives. there is a chinese buddhist charity group on campus i know of and i love a lot of their programs, but i want to find specific opportunities where i can learn more about religious stuff or find prayer groups whereas that club focuses less on religion and more on cultural stuff. i want to go to chinese buddhist temples in manhattan, but the majority i know only do services in cantonese or fujianese whereas i come from a mandarin-speaking family; while i know of temples i grew up going to in queens, they're a little bit far (~1-2 hours) from where i live rn. i know from experience a lot of nyu students who grew up with buddhism tend to be more culturally buddhist rather than spiritually buddhist, but if anyone could point me in the direction of mahayana buddhist temples/religious organizations that are nyu-affiliated or operate anywhere in manhattan that would be so great. i would prefer chinese buddhist orgs/temples, but as someone who's also prayed and done religious stuff with tibetan and sri lankan buddhists, i would also be open to more multicultural/inter-branch stuff too! feel free to connect with me if you are buddhist yourself as well; i would love to go to temple with new people ^^

CAS taking ORGO at Tandon

Hey, was wondering if any 2nd year CAS student has been able to successfully take Orgo at Tandon?

I checked online and I think CAS students don’t get to register at the same time for it so classes fill up before they can get a seat

fav spots on campus

not "i love studying at bobst" but best bathroom on campus? a misc room people walk past? sketchy restaurants near campus that have best food you ever tasted?

they dont have to be secret places, just somewhere you wouldnt have thought to visit as a freshman you ended up loving.

Student & Alumni Life is the lowest meal plan as a commuting grad student worth it

im a first year grad student commuting from westchester and i wasnt planning on doing a meal plan but i just saw the promotion that they're doing for extra dining dollars so now i just am curious whether its worth it. i have in person classes 3 days a week, one of those being stretched from 9 am to 7 pm, and i am looking to have an on campus job as well. id like to tell myself im going to make food at home but knowing myself unfortunately thats not gonna happen as often as i hope lol. does the 95 flex plan w/ 200 dining dollars make sense at all or is it just better to pay with a credit card to eat at on campus places/just eat off campus?

Othmer microwave

Is there any shared microwaves anywhere currently in Othmer? I’m not trying to walk all the way to dibner to heat up my food. I thought there would be one in the shared lounges on our floor but it’s under construction. Matter of fact are all the lounges under construction? I haven’t explored the building

What's the future of CPT for MS CS programs — will we still be able to do internships?

Starting my MSCS this fall, and the thing I actually can't get a straight answer on is whether internships are still going to be a realistic option a year or two from now.

Quick context: SEVP's Aug 24 broadcast message took the position that CPT tied to an elective course — one not required of every student in the program — doesn't meet the approval requirements. It has to be an integral part of an established curriculum applying to all students. A lot of schools paused course-credit CPT in response, and most MS CS programs don't require an internship to graduate, so the standard "register for the internship elective, then file CPT" route is the one that got hit.

So the forward-looking question: when summer 2027 comes around, are MS CS students going to be able to apply for internships at all?

A few angles I'd like people's read on:

  1. If your program is in the pause, is your department saying anything about a fix — adding a required practicum, a co-op track, restructuring the internship course so it counts? Or is nobody committing to anything yet?
  2. Has anyone heard how recruiters are reacting? Wondering whether companies start filtering out F-1 candidates for summer roles if CPT looks unreliable.
  3. For those further along — does this push people toward on-campus research/RA work or unpaid stuff as a fallback, or is there a route I'm not seeing?
  4. Realistic expectations: does this get walked back, litigated, or formalized into a rule? Anyone following this closely have a view on the timeline?
  5. If internships stay closed off, how much does that actually hurt full-time recruiting later? Curious whether people think it's a real dent or something you can work around with projects and referrals.

How hard is it to get approved to study abroad at NYU Shanghai? I am a New York student and I submitted the application for spring 2026 study abroad at NYU Shanghai. I applied before the priority deadline and I meet the gpa requirement.
