This actually happened to my husband.

Power supply caught fire in his rig while he was playing WoW or something. He unplugged everything and carried a flaming PC outside rather than ruin everything in it with a fire extinguisher.

Nuked the graphics card, but the mother board and memory ended up being okay. Manufacturer of the power supply took responsibility and paid to replace it all.

But never again have we left a computer powered on while we're not home.

CO2 extinguisher, they aren't as effective on all kinds of fires like ABC powder or foam, but they are much much less likely to cause collateral damage

It was Antec. They said they had been having an issue with a supplier substituting inferior parts that weren't up to spec, hence the rebuild.

They gave us no problems about it, at all. And the new power supply they provided worked perfectly and is still in use today.

I mean do we really need to drag the manufacture into it when they took responsibility for it? Or were you wanting the name because they actually did the right thing unlike some companies.

EDIT: To those criticizing my defense of a company then deleting their messages. Yes, I am defending companies for good behavior. Not every company is run by a bunch of greedy assholes.

If all you do is demonize companies for making mistakes or simply existing then all you are going to end up with is shit companies. If there is no point in PR then all you leave them with is a desire to make money and no reason to care about their customers.

Yes their goal is to make money, but many companies acknowledge that the best way to do that is to not be shitty. If they get the same results feom good behavior as bad behavior, then all you do is encourage bad behavior because it is cheaper and gets the same results.

they might've did the right thing, but by not naming the power supply, my entire house would be at higher risk of going on fire if i were to buy that specific power supply.

Tbf, all he needs to do is put it on sleep mode when ya’ll arent going to be home for only a short time (still works if yall wont be home for a long time too). Also I do wonder what PSU that is because cheap PSUs will always tend to have that kind of problem within a short timespan of usage (hence why I only ever bought Seasonic or Corsair PSUs for the PCs I’ve built for more than a dozen of my friends over the years), and those friends of mine leave their PCs on for hours on end (they stream and game).

If the PSU isnt cheap tho, that’s most def a rare yet severe manufacturing defect, which sucks, and is prob why the manufacturer shouldered the whole cost.

Your ability to properly test a PSU is going to be very limited. Most of them that have defects don't fail like this.

Can you turn it on? I mean fully on. Not just turning the switch on... and preferably without using a paperclip.

Can you put a significant load on it?

Not to sound like some ad bot, but I have yet to have a fail on bequiet!'s PSU's. The oldest from 2010 (850w) is still up and running in it's new job as powering a relatives media server. This I'm typing from, is a youngin, only 8 years old 1KW bequiet. Antec used to be a good reliable PSU as well, back in the days.

Can't say the same about Fortron, Cooler Master, and so on and so on.

Same psu in my machine for the last 3 or 4 years, never the slightest problem, you'll be fine.

my old 5 year old Asus ROG 1000w is fine but I just wanted the 12v or pcie5.1 cable. I dont like adapters. Giving the psu to a buddy who has 850 and wants more powah

If it helps you feel better, my last one was a cheap 750 that had a catastrophic failure and it didn't catch fire and the only other component that seemed to get damaged was my cheapass motherboard. When I switched it on, it made this ominous growing "ooom" sound for like two seconds and then it shat out a big shot of sparks and died. Tower was only a couple of feet away from the wall and near exposed carpet and nothing got singed or scarred.

Just a 14700k and 5070ti

I always like to have a lot of headroom... As I was taught long time ago that you want to be at 50 to 60% at the most of your power supply.

So if your system draws about 550 watts you want a 1,000 watt power supply.

And then you can deal with transient spikes and keeps the power supply running at the peak efficiency.
