Proof that modern games just, do not give a fuck about optimisation

The biggest performance boost of the last decade was the swap to SSD's

The rest has been underwhelming for me

I remember the Sony crew hyping up Ratchet and Clank because of the SSD, and was thinking, we've been doing this for a while...

But I was glad more games would finally make use of the tech.

The only problem now is a lot of my games load so fast, I can't read the info screens.

Haha

I've had that issue too

to be fair before the ps5 we didn't have directstorage on pc so most games don't really have huge benefits from nvme ssd

they were hyping up their equivalent of direct storage. Not the SSD itself. I still can't think of many games that have Ratchet and Clanks equivalent to rapid traversal. DirectStorage also took a while to come out on PC.

It's not just that it was an SSD, but a NVME as baseline hardware to be developed on. I'm sure it's gotta feel nice knowing you don't have to develop with platter drives as the lowest common denominator anymore on a platform.

No, it's proof that developers dont get the blank check resources and time that Rockstar games do. smh

Not time enough for > 30 fps

Redditors go above and beyond to dismiss/deny R*'s credibility, whenever somebody presses R* even a bit.

Yeah, because we should totally ignore the 200 million budget and the 8 years development cycle.

RDR2 ran like ass on PC when it first came out. It’s like the example of an unoptimized game.

It only runs decently now because newer PC hardware has enough power to brute force run their dogshit code.

This is just nonsense, RDR2 can run at like 40-50 fps at 1080p medium settings on even iGPUs like Arc 140V or Radeon 780M. Those iGPU are basically equivalent in raw performance to something like a 1050 Ti... IE: A $130 entry level desktop GPU from a decade ago.

Objectively wrong

The game runs decently even on low end hardware from 10 years ago

RDR2 is also a game with forced TAA that looks extremely blurry until DLSS4.5/FSR4 came out. 7 years after it's released on PC

Brother I was running it on my 2060 Super at 100fps average like 6 years ago. For a game that is still arguably one of the best looking games out right now, that’s insane.

My hot take: the hyper-fixation on graphics is an albatross around the neck of gaming. Developers seem to care more about pushing graphics to the limit than providing fun gameplay. And you can't really fault them, because overall games seem to share that preference.

It's gotten to the point where I can tell that these games from different studios are using the same game engine due to the same clunkiness/jankiness from the gameplay and movement.

Like they just use a lot of the default settings of the game engine out of the box and don't take the time to customize/optimize things to make it "feel" better.

They're basically just re-skins of the same game and gameplay mechanics sadly even though the graphics look good.

I'd say this is definitely a hot take. You like a in world where games like RDR2 and Spider-Man 1/2 and Horizon exist side by side with Balatro, Minecraft, Vampire Survivors, Roblox, Ball x Pit, Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom and more exist. Some games absolutely push graphics, but not necessarily at the cost of gameplay, and some games focus on gameplay, while either leaning into their graphical limitations (Minecraft, BOTW/TOTK), embracing the "outdated" graphics as part of their identity (Balatro, VS, Ball X Pit), or focusing on neither but still being phenomenally successful (Roblox, which has neither good gameplay nor good graphics).

This isn’t at all true. Rockstar IS this by definition and intent. But there are hundreds of unique games released every year that do not strive for graphical fidelity. Weird take.

People were saying that about games when RDR came out as well.

art direction, too. Ghost of Tsushima looks incredible and was also for those same platforms.

That's a very random comma

Lazy devs that rely on ai, dlss and fsr. I can’t stand it.
