Reed College Questions Thread for Prospective Students

Hello all,
It is college applications season once again, so I thought it might be a good idea to throw up a thread where people can come ask questions about Reed or applying to Reed. Fire away prospies.

Portland Marathon

Is anyone else from Reed planning on running the portland marathon in October? I’m trying to see how hard logistics would be, but it would definitely be helpful to plan on commuting with others if anybody else is going?

Printing posters at print center ?

Hey Reedies! Has anyone used the print center in Eliot 132 for personal stuff like posters and wall art? Curious how much it costs and if they’re chill about printing non school related things. Incoming freshman trying to plan my room setup. Thanks!

Parent question regarding orientation week

We're excited to be bringing our kid to reed next week and just because I like to over plan, is there a good time to plan for a final good bye? It looks like the agenda on Tuesday night is free, so maybe a dinner and then just let them go. But I also don't want to take them away from whatever else it going on and new and exciting.

Does it matter who teaches my Hum 110?

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post about PE. It’s really cool that PE here won’t be as boring and torturing as in high school.
Now I checked out Hum 110 and there’s a bunch of options and I’m not sure if different professors teach it that much different

MCAT study buddy?

Hello reed Reddit page. Hopefully this reaches a premed!

I just graduated from UCSC and moved back to Portland for MCAT prep. I’m sorta hitting a wall studying by myself and am hoping that someone else in the Portland area is taking the MCAT in Jan/feb and wants to study together! My worst section is C/P, best is CARS and B/B. If you want a study partner pls message me!

What PE class should I choose?

I’m an incoming freshman and the whole thing seems kinda confusing, though I still haven’t had a meeting with my registration coach.
I am really lazy when it comes to physical activity, so I wanna choose a class that won’t require me being physically fit or athletic

Rejected Waitlist Reapplying

Hi everyone! I applied to Reed this past cycle as an Art Major, was waitlisted after applying ED2, and got the rejection email last week.

I ended up not enrolling anywhere because I couldn’t afford it and decided to work and save money. I’m thinking about reapplying thought ED1 this year.

How much does Financial Aid really affects Reed admissions decisions?? I know they say it doesn’t but if you are waitlisted I’m pretty sure they have a budget in how many Financial Aid kids they can have. Would the ED1 make a difference? Has anyone here been admitted to Reed with a very high level of demonstrated financial need? Would taking a gap year before reapplying make me look weaker as an applicant?

Any advice or comment is appreciated

Is Reed fun?

from what I’ve heard about reed it seems like it’s a school that’s full of a lot of really cool people and a school that has a cool countercultural vibe. Plus it’s in Portland, a pretty artsy and progressive city. But I’ve also heard that it has really intense and rigorous academics that require like all your time and effort. is there a real trade off there? do people value their classes more than their social lives? or is there still room for cool adventures, outings, and getting to know people?

(again, I’ve never visited the college or talked to anyone who goes there, this is all just from reading stuff online)

Waitlist

Hi! It’s the day before waitlist finals, have any waitlisted folks had any movement/gotten any feedback from admissions? August 1st (their “notify by” date) is tomorrow, and a Saturday! I haven’t heard anything for months but was told not to bother anyone in the admission office so I figured I’d reach out to the community :)

ANTH 211 recommendations

There's a few different professors offering it. Does anyone have any recommendations from their time at Reed? I'm sure they're all great, but maybe yours was exceptionally amazing? I'd love to hear about it! Thanks so much!

Hi any current students or incoming people know how high the clearance is under the beds (in Trillium)? Trying to figure out storage options to go under. Thanks!

Physic’s Placement Test

I am planning on signing up for the physics placement test to skip PHY 101 and 102. I’ve self studied both AP Physics C exams and received a 4 on Mech and 5 on E&M. For anyone whose taken the physics placement, what topics are on it and how different is it from the AP tests.

Math Placement Conversation?

I signed up for a math placement conversation and I do legitimately think that I’m capable of moving to math 112 (2 years of calc coursework beforehand). However, I can’t find anything on what’s actually in the conversation. Should I be prepared for on the spot problems or detailing the curriculum of what I’ve been doing?

I want to give myself the best chance possible, and going in unprepared would not be that. So, anyone who’s had it, what was your experience? (And also were you able to be placed?)

can recent/current student answer some questions for me please

  1. I see a lot of people say it’s easy to get cancelled, but what exactly do you get cancelled for doing?

  2. How is the food?

  3. What is the social scene like for quirky and less quirky people?

  4. Is it really that cliquey?

  5. What’s the best part about reed?

Psych or Neuroscience?

Hello! I’m entering Reed as a freshman this year with 2x associate degrees (one in film and one in psych, most of my credits will not transfer rip) and while I deeply enjoyed my psych classes I am curious if Reed’s neuroscience classes are preferable, and if I should major in the department.

I am intending to go on to get a PHD, hoping to focus on neural networks or aging/geriatrics and I am aware that if I major in psych I can still pursue neuroscience or vice versa. Based on my research interests, future plans and academic history, as well as others experiences in the programs. I am curious which program would be more beneficial.

Furthermore if I do pursue psych is cognitive science, computational science or something else entirely a preferable allied field? Thank you all so much for your help!

Non-traditional students at Reed? (read: old.)

Hello! I'm an old (34) looking to potentially transfer to Reed. I'm a normal, leftist, social person.

I'm aware that the majority of the student body is 15 years younger than me, but are there any older students on campus? I don't think it necessarily matters if there aren't, I'm just curious!

psych / perf. arts / hum110 professors ?

I am an incoming freshman and am looking for professor recommendations !

I have an associates degree under my belt and the best professors I worked with during that time were the ones who took the time to connect with me personally, and supported me through my research and how I pursued my interests and academic prowess in and out of the classroom. They were personable, and funny, and struck a balance of challenging me academically while also making sure I understood all the new information.

Who are some professors at Reed in the psych department, performing arts (specifically theatre and dance), and HUM110 who you might recommend ?

Housing Q

Can anyone tell me the dimensions of a single room in Sullivan? My sister can’t find them and refuses to ask herself.
