First finish “demo” song ever, I have mixed feeling about it but couldn’t pin point exactly why I felt this way so why not bring it to the internet.
I’m pretty much mumbling the lyrics here because i haven’t flesh it out yet but all the melodies are done.
All feedback welcome!

Edit: Felt kind of nervous while recording so my vocal is crappy

Hi,

I've commented on several songs, but never before posted a song for others to review. Here's an updated version of a song I wrote several years ago (I'm taking this approach with several songs in my catalog).

This is just a phone video of a practice session. While certainly not flawless, I think the performance is passable. So please, don't comment on the production as is, but I welcome ideas on how to further arrange and produce the song. But as of yet, I've not even loaded the audio into my DAW, so it's raw and completely unprocessed.

I'm most interested in thoughts regarding the lyrics and music. Thanks for listening.

Discussion Topic Difference between stealing and interpolation?

I had a chord progression that i later realized was almost identical to frank oceans white ferrari (the guitar part). I play it with guitar but have heavy distortion on it. White ferrari also uses a melody by the beatles which i guess is interpolation. Could i say that chord progression is also interpolation if i use it? (Also frank oceans song goes C/G->G->F5 and mine goes C->Em7(no³)->F5 in the same rythm as white ferrari) Is it too close to use?

I struggle quite a bit with objectivity while listening back to my own music that I've written. In fact, I absolutely hate it, and have for a very long time. I'm a musician that has been playing instruments for over twenty years, and spent quite a bit of time in cover bands, but never was able to bring myself to sing on stage. Always attempted to hide in the back ranks and had difficulty even doing backup vocals, and even at that, only did so when it was absolutely necessary. Needless to say, to get to this point where I'm sharing on the internet is quite a huge step for me. I would say that it's even more difficult for me to do than it is to play and perform my own songs on stage.

Two years ago I set out on a mission to create MY OWN songs. I didn't have a particular sound or genre in mind, nor did I have any idea what I was really doing or where I was going with it. All that I knew was that I needed to make things that were important to me, and show my kids (That I've been raising entirely on my own for 7 years) that fear is not a reason to not do the things that you want in life.

When I play gigs/festivals, I get pretty positive feedback, but there's part of me that thinks that the feedback that I'm receiving is simply out of kindness for my solo effort on stage. In any case, I'm hoping that I can get some objective feedback on structure, flow, and lyrics on a completely raw phone recording of one of my "Folk'ish" songs.

I appreciate your time in listening to it, and I hope you have a wonderful day.

Apple Mountain Crows

-

(Verse 1)

-

'Bout to sell everything I own

And make my way from this road

That knows no names

The rabbit won't know the bills

Are needing paid

Or that he's late to getting better

-

(Pre-Chorus)

-

So how about you baby,

What you running away from?

-

(Chorus)

-

Let it out and go

You let it out

When you roam

You roam

You roam

Let it out and go

Find your ground

Near those apple mountain crows

-

(Verse 2)

-

There's a little truth in everything,

You know?

It's just like I say

But I'm a fella today

The river wanders off its beating way

And washes away everything

We'll ever say

-

(Pre-Chorus)

-

How about you babe,

Where you heading off to now?

-

(Chorus)

-

Let it out and go

You let it out

When you roam

You roam

You roam

Let it out and go

Find your ground

Near those apple mountain crows

-

(Bridge)

-

Low mourning bird

Sing what you know

That when you run

you're running towards a home

Just part your hair

And sing along

'Cause you'll never know

You'll never know

Let's Collaborate! Reddit Songwriters Playlist (September)!

Hello song writers! We are back for month two of the Reddit Song Writers Playlist. We had a great response in August! Throughout the month, I reached out to many independent artists on the platform to compile another collection of songs. There are 31 songs to listen to this time around (I may add a few more today and tomorrow). I kept the same playlist, so those of you who already saved it, can access it quickly. I have created an archive where I will put songs previously featured (link at bottom).

As you listen, if you enjoy a song, I encourage you to click on that artist and check out more of their work (almost all of the artists selected have multiple releases to check out including albums, EPs, and singles). As of right now, the playlist will only be available on Spotify (sorry to those of you who do not use Spotify).

Here it is: Reddit Songwriters Collection

Let's help this community build upon itself by...

  1. Listening to the 31 featured songs.
  2. Saving the ones you enjoy.
  3. Checking out more releases from the featured artists.

If you want to be a part of future playlists, or potentially added to this one, send me a direct message or comment your release on this thread.

Happy listening :)

Disclaimer: My personal taste in music may have impacted the featured songs on this playlist, and I apologize for that.

Feedback Request I think its good, but is it?

this is a new song ive been working on. It started with the simple question of "if as above, so below...what the hell are they doing up there?" It eventually got into history repeating itself, projecting humanities flaws onto unmet aliens, and a quick snap out of it with the goodness of grandma. I just included the first verse and chorus in the recording, but I'll leave the full lyrics here:

As Above, So Below

If as above, then so below

What's Heaven hiding past the glow?

Do angels fight to save their homes?

Does the Son of God default on loans?

And if he does, where's that leave us?

Said he'd pay our way, did he leave enough?

It's like salvation ran past due

Lapsed in '22

If as above, then so below

Then where'd Olympus ever go?

A much more grounded godly throne

The greatest gift from Greece or Rome

In all their decadence, they knew

Gods fall to their temptations too

And the ages leave no yarn to spin

Whose image we were built in

Say yes to me

Say yes to destiny

The things we live to see

Or not

The things we live and die for

If here again, and so before

And the arrow only ever points to more

But abundance can only be so true

With some poor soul that's under you

But so I've heard, they're just as free

To be doc or judge, miles above me

They just simply lack my will

I won't ask where that got killed

If as before and so again

Will new battles fought match old wills to win

If after every failsafe we exhaust

The next ones along forget their cause

A despot's reach, a rich man's tricks

Fall to calm, soft speech and a big ole stick

But that white fleet just ran aground

Without a peep from folks in town

Say yes to me

Say yes to destiny

The things we live to see

Or not

The things we live and die for

And if as within, then so throughout

All caught in the same social droughts

Any greater dreams amongst the stars

Spurned by the truth of what they are

While the gluttony choose who benefits

The filth and greed always eclipse

The primal urge to reach beyond

So none ever leave their pond

But if as within, then so throughout

Then what's your grandma all about?

Does she sit on boards with sleazy men?

Would she starve a kid for three percent?

While there's no order, very true

You are the cosmos seeing you

And sure, throughout may all be fools

If it's just the apes with tools

Discussion Topic Best way to combat writers block?

I’ve been trying to sit down and write some lyrics, but I’ve struggling to, y’know, actually come up with any, I have general ideas of what I want to write about, but when I actually try to write them out, nothing. What are your best tips to get the writing juices flowing?

Discussion Topic What do you actually have open on your screen while you're writing?

I've been playing for years but I only recently started paying attention to my own setup, and it's honestly a mess. I usually end up with two things open side by side and a notes app on my phone for whatever I hum in the car. I have no idea if that's normal or if I'm just doing it the hard way, so I got curious about how other people actually work.

If you write your own material, I'd love to hear:

- What do you have open while you're working on something? DAW, notation software, an app on your phone, paper, nothing at all?

- Where in the process do you tend to get stuck, and what do you do to get unstuck?

- Have you ever stopped using a tool you'd been using for a while? What made you drop it?

- Thinking about whatever you use now — how long was it before it stopped feeling like work to use?

Happy to answer all of the above myself in the comments if anyone wants to compare notes

EDITED:

Thanks to all of you that have spent time to share their experience. It would be cool to know how young musician or people that have ideas but not the knowledge of any musical instrument, how approach to songwriting

Discussion Topic Can anyone else only write songs when they’re going through something?

I only seem to be able to come up with ideas when I’m feeling despair. I’ve only ever written songs as a means of making sense of my own feelings, and trying to turn them into something beautiful.

The problem is sometimes I want to be able to just… write a song. Without having to be actively going through some sort of strife. But when I’m feeling fine, it’s like I have no creativity at all.

I can come up with music and melodies just fine, but my lyrics always sound so contrived because I have no idea what I’m talking about.

Feedback Request Song for a wedding in a war zone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi guys, it's me, old Mundane Goal, with a wig on, because this is the internet, it's 2026 and I can do whatever I like. ( I am saying this to myself)

This is a song I made last Friday as a wedding gift to a young couple in a war zone I happen to correspond with.

There Are Loves

There are loves that will find you

And guide you through the night

There are loves that can blind you

And make everything feel alright

And the enemy on the border line

Green with jealousy - can’t make it go away

And the enemy drunk with fantasies

Won’t know what it means

To really love

There are loves that will find you

And guide you through the night

There are loves that can blind you

And make everything feel alright

Bright Summer day Wouldn't know if you hadn't told me

Wanna run, run Get away Don't belong here yet I stay

In a cage Heavy chains Made of all the years gone to waste but

(CHORUS) ******* In many ways I know they're part of me Won't be long, I'll be gone If better days come back to bother me You'll know I made it out through a hole in the wall *******

Hey By the way Did you see that the date might have changed

And did you see Me beg and plead For the one thing that I needed

To be had To be held To be someone you could tell That

(CHORUS)

Discussion Topic How to write balanced lyrics

I have my notes full of small snippets and short paragraphs but I never seem to be able to write a whole song. Firstly I struggle with finding what I feel and compressing it in a single sentence. (This are sometimes thoughts that take hours of internal conversation so how do you compress it so small…). If I find what I want to say I can get a quite nice sentence on paper. The problem is that if all sentences are figuratively and abstract, it becomes cringy. I struggle to make it vague enough to not be too revealing but common enough to not be cringy or overdone. Then I find it hard to write more than a few (good) sentences about something I feel or find. After looking for that perfect one, most of it is capsuled in that one sentence and saying other things about it would be just repeating. Anyone some tips?

Edit: here is an example of an unpolished start where i tried to be less abstract. But even if i’d add things/make the flow better I still find it super cringey and “amateuristic” but I don’t know how to change it. (I don’t really care about the “structure” of a song. I like songs without clear structure)

Candlelight and voices
Laughter all around
Smiling at my choices
But my eyes are on the ground

Talking about nothing
When I have so much to say
Questions to be asked
Is it normal how I play

Thoughts that seem to long
For the acces to my tongue

My tear for a soul who sees the depth
Of the lake inside my head

Who brings chaos to a rest
And numbs my anxious chest

Am I looking for myself
Am I looking for the one
Am I looking for perfection in a world where flaws are born
