I was surprised to see Tauranga Council CEO Marty Grenfell saying Mount Maunganui's disaster happened because of poor "processes, systems & information sharing" - That is literally the CEO's job

The disaster at Mount Maunganui is truly tragic - mostly because of how forseeable it was. And on the day the heroic efforts of the teacher who passed was even more heartbreaking.

People there tried to call emergency services, Council etc and nothing happened.

And now the accountability ball is being shuffled around as if it's just a game, and not human lives lost, and their families forever hurt by it.

So I was very surprised to see the Tauranga city Council CEO I think it was - Marty Grenfell - use weasal public relations words to avoid responsibility.

On TVNZ he said it was due to bad "processes and systems" and poor "information sharing"

But he is literally the CEO - that is literally his job.

I'm not sure why the Mayor is backing this individual but hadn't weighed in because I hadn't looked into it so didn't want to comment - but his comments are a pretty clear indication this guy has no sense of responsibility or accountability and is no "CEO" material - or maybe the Luxon kind

My 2c.

Evening Coffee Haunts?

G'day all,

Moved here from CHCH last year, been missing the ability to head out for a nice coffee and a slice at 9pm. Everything here seems to close early!

Anyone know of a nice coffee shop that stays open into the evening? Preferably Greerton / CBR sort of area - not quite desperate enough to drive out to Pap!

Obviously there's McCafe, but doesn't quite have the atmosphere I'm missing

Ta!

Permenant Caravan Sites

Does anyone have a permenant caravan site at a holiday park/campground in the BOP that would be able to give me an idea what the annual fees/outgoings are like?

We're thinking this would be a good option for affordable holidays but not sure what the ongoing expenses would be. Any insight appreciated, T.I.A.

Hey all, does any one one know a trustworthy Mechanic. My car failed its Wof due to the front left break pad, apparently rubbing. Notes say something about needing to be measured.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your help

To the guy who unstuck my hair in the supermarket aisle this morning….

It got caught on one of those hooks holding random items in the supermarket aisle and honestly I could’ve cried I felt so embarrassed. But to the guy who quickly helped untangle my hair I just wanted to say thank you so much. I was already overstimulated trying to do a grocery shop with my 8 month old and the store seemed to be unusually wild this morning. You’re a good human and you made my day slightly more tolerable 🫶🏼

Tattoo courses/beginner help

After giving in to severe intrusive thoughts and as part of a quarter life crisis, my partner has decided to pick up a small tattoo kit to "play" with. Just to clarify she is under no illusion that there will be any human tattooing any time soon, and this is just a little side quest for now to see how she likes it, with fake skin and templates etc. to practice on.

What I'm wondering is if there is anyone or anywhere local that offers an intro to basic tattooing? Like a crash course on inking your mates. We have both had work done on ourselves, mine was by 2 professional artists, 2 of hers were by professionals and one traditional māori piece by a family member. What we are both very aware of is the risks of poor technique, hygiene, product quality and so on. So having a bit of an introduction into how hard or deep to push, brands of ink to choose would be helpful for her before she embarks on a journey of creative expression which leaves me with a "no regerts" face tat.

One of her pieces healed quite painfully and was raised/itchy for quite some time so getting information about what causes and prevents this would be great, if anyone has any pointers or recommendations for people or businesses to talk to, would be much appreciated.

Uber scam: driver doesn't move then waits till the cancellation window is closed before messaging

Maybe not new to others but it's the first time it was attempted for me. I confirmed pickup at a restaurant from a driver 1 minute away, who had a 4.9 rating. After a few minutes I noticed he wasn't moving, just parked on a side street nearby.

He messaged me saying he was on his way but he still wasn't moving after another 2 minutes so I tried to cancel so I could summon another driver. The cancel option was not available.

My friends didn't want to leave me waiting on the street in the dark and they were concerned about some dodgy people loitering nearby so one of them drove me to my destination.

The whole way there I was messaging the driver to cancel and he refused. He said he was on his way. Only then did he start moving, then waited at the restaurant for 5 minutes and cancelled, leaving me with a no-show charge.

It was impossible to take screenshots of the map but I did get screenshots of our text conversation. In hindsight I should have used my work phone to take photos of it but I was a bit pissed off and didn't think of it.

When I reached my destination I lodged a complaint and Uber upheld his story saying I was a no-show.

It was only by using the Report Scam option and sharing the message screenshots that I got the charge reversed.

Hopefully this helps someone avoid it happening to them. Lesson: if the driver is not moving and you know he's not just sitting in traffic, cancel before the window shuts - could be between 2 and 4 minutes.

Better Standards

One final push 🇳🇿

Thank you to everyone who has signed, shared and supported my petition — and to everyone who joined the debate.

I’m asking for a few more signatures before it moves to the next stage.

Telling people to “go back to your own country” for political gain is not the standard we should expect from a Minister of the Crown.

Our elected representatives should uphold the dignity of the country they represent — not dishonour it for political advantage.

We should expect better.

If you agree, please sign. Every additional signature strengthens that message. 🇳🇿

Weekend afternoon social beach volleyball?

I have a friend who works evenings so can't do the usual weekday volleyball leagues. Would anyone be interested in doing a semi regular weekend afternoon social beach volleyball game/practice down at the mount? It wouldn't be with proper scoring etc, just gather a few people and have a bash around.

Help needed – looking for a mechanic/panel beater in Tauranga or Mount Maunganui

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable mechanic or panel beater in Tauranga / Mount Maunganui who can do car repairs fairly quickly.
I’m leaving New Zealand in about 5 weeks, so I really need to have my car repaired and sold before I leave. I’m a bit worried about the time frame and would really appreciate any recommendations or contacts.
It’s a 2004 Toyota Corolla Fielder S-Line. The damage is mainly on the front right side – the headlight is broken and the surrounding bumper/cover is damaged and a bit loose. The car is still drivable and everything is secured.
Does anyone know a panel beater or mechanic who might be able to take on the repair soon, or someone who could help source the necessary parts quickly?
Alternatively, if anyone knows someone who buys damaged cars and repairs/resells them, I’d also be very interested in that option. At this point I’m open to whatever makes the most sense, as I mainly need to have the car sorted before I leave NZ.
Any recommendations or contacts would be really appreciated! 🙏
