I got to visit Rodondo Pier for the first time last weekend, took some pictures of the core four's favorite spot!

I have a friend who lives in San Diego and I went out there last week to enjoy my first vacation in sometime, we took 1 day to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway (a bucket list item for me) to hit Rodondo Pier and visit some filming spots of my favorite TV show! We ate dinner at the diner (I order the cheeseburger, extra fries) and enjoyed some time exploring afterwards!

We got the the beach/pier around 6pm as the sun was beginning to set, I can see why the kids loved going to this area.
We took a quick walk around the pier first, ran across Old Tony's the spot best known as the clandestine meeting spot for Neil Roberts and Julie Cooper during their season 3 budding romance.
The famous sail structures of the pier often seen in the show.
I'm not 100% certain on this but I believe this to be the pier Jimmy Cooper gets beat up under for not paying his debts (again.)
The famous Diner itself, known in the real world as the Redondo Coffee Shop and Bait & Tackle Shop. It's been repainted and age is starting to show but I was beyond hyped to be here.
The corner booth is off limits to eaters but you can take photos sitting in it, etc. Some cool memorabilia on the wall here.
Booth part 2.
The "You know what I like about rich kids?" booth, picture taken from the booth seen in the painting on the wall in the corner booth picture.
After eating we headed back out, a lot of establishing shots were taken here, including the famous season one shots of the gang on bike and skateboard.
This is where the Bait Shop used to be, it's now a skate park.
"They call them 'Balboa Bars'." "It's just ice cream."
Sandy's beachside office is still around! I wanted to find the office used fr Planned Parenthood but security was floating around.
"Whoever you want me to be." (The person also happens to be sunburned from a 5 hour top down convertible trip.)

I had wanted to hit some other filming spots but just did not have the time with a 2 hour trip back to my hotel in San Diego, next time!

Discussion What’s your earliest memory of watching The O.C.—the first episode, a specific scene, a song, or watching it with someone?

I vividly remember being in the living room sometime around 2003 or 2004. I was 13 at the time when I caught the TV spot for “The Truth.” It was the one with Oliver holding a gun and basically taking Marissa hostage, and I remember thinking, “Dude, what?! How do I watch this show?”

It may have even aired during American Idol. 😂 I honestly don’t remember how I got invested or caught up on the series after that, but I do remember watching the rest of it live on Fox every week, and I was hooked.

This was also my first introduction to the world of online forums, which… yeah, I probably should not have been on at 13.

Did Ryan invite Marissa to his birthday party?

I am confused. He told Sadie he decided not to invite Marissa. Then Kirsten advised him to tell Marissa in person about his decision. He then goes to her trailer with the invitation but she wasn’t there. Before he goes he flips the picture with them together down but he leaves the invitation there. So does this mean that he invited her and if so why did he change his mind and why didn’t she go? And why did he flip their picture down?

I did the same thing a week ago for Marissa and some DM'd me to do Adam so here he is. I think I might do the core four, might as well.

First-Time Watcher I cannot stand theresa

Okay so I recently started the show, say a week ago and I'm already done with season 1 cuz I'm crazy like that but anyway, I actually loved theresa in the beginning cuz she seemed like the only nice person from Ryan's old neighborhood but with her constantly throwing it to Ryan's face about having a better environment now while she knew he always grew up in an abusive household kinda sent me off. But that was only the beginning cuz I've come to hate her at the end of the season!! Cuz wdym you sleep with a guy after being proposed to and then take off to be with the said proposer and then show up being pregnant not knowing who's the father? I'm no one to judge but I honestly discourage teenage pregnancy especially when you're working a minimum wage job and can barely afford to live yourself!! But again, after you spring that decision onto a 16 year old boy why does hollywood expect teenagers to be responsible and step up when there are adults who still fall short and are total assholes? It's bloody frickin normal to be scared shitless at the prospect of being teenage parents!!! Also, ik it's not really her fault but I hate how she asked ryan to move back with her! They could've provided better to the baby had she stayed with the Cohen's. Ughhhh, I'm barely able to make it through the episodes, should I drop or continue cuz I can only imagine how it's gonna be after the baby comes along. Spoilers are encouraged. Thank you.

Season 3 One of the Most Irritating Characters!

I saw a clip on TT from The Dawn Patrol (3x21). The episode involves Ryan going to Albuquerque to invite Dawn to graduation. Ryan meets Chloe, a waitress friend of Dawn's, played by Nicole Garza.

This episode overall really annoyed me, but Chloe irritated me the most. She inserts herself into a situation she knows nothing about and judges Ryan up one side and down the other, then somehow manages to sleep with him.

She claims that Ryan never really wanted to know about Dawn's current situation (AA meetings, her boyfriend, etc.), but she doesn't take the time to actually learn anything about Ryan's background or the abuse he endured at Dawn's hands. She basically decides that she knows exactly what Ryan's problem is without bothering to find out what actually happened between him and his mother.

Then Dawn herself kind of irritated me. She gets mad at Ryan and claims that she was never ashamed of her family, but she was the one who kicked Ryan out in the first place! That's literally what she was ranting about when she pulled up in her beater and picked Ryan up in front of Sandy in the pilot. She was ashamed of the situation he and Trey got themselves into and wanted Ryan out of her house and family.

Dawn also seemed to expect Ryan to immediately be ready to make nice-nice and become a loving, happy family again, when she wasn't even ready to go visit him for his birthday not that long before.

It always drove me nuts when Ryan was made to feel guilty by other people for actually putting himself first and removing himself from unhealthy relationships. IMHO, I think he should have done that with certain other relationships, too—but that's a story for another several dozen posts. 😂

Ryan spent most of his life being taught that his needs didn't matter. When he finally starts setting boundaries and choosing people who actually treat him well, the show sometimes seems to treat him as the problem for doing it. That's what really bothers me about this episode.

Discussion Rewatching and noticing how bad the writing is

How many times did the writers have to put “look…” “hey…” before every single line? It’s so bad. Meanwhile I’m almost done rewatching and I still love it despite this fact.

Discussion Loved the balance between the kids and the adults/parents storylines!

From afar the show just looks like it’s for teens (and for the most part it is) but the writers do a great job incorporating dramatic real world drama/problems for the parents too! Some of the issues that arose in the Cohen household really hit home for me. 😔

Ok let's talk about Sterling Point

I was two or three episodes in last night when I realized it was a Josh/Stephanie show––the likes of which we have not seen in the teen genre (if I'm not mistaken) since Gossip Girl in the Aughts.

A few observations:

  1. This show is like Alex/Marissa on steroids in a future world where their relationship is respected and makes sense.
  2. The main character is a female Seth. Her brother is the least annoying of all the men on the show outside of JDM, but you aren't watching the show for the men. You're watching a teen version of the L Word set on a Canadian island with teenagers.
  3. I was already 2 or 3 episodes in before I realized Josh/Stephanie made it(!) It's quite addictive!
  4. Oona feels like a more breathable Jessa from Girls.
  5. Lol at Oona's little sister for reading The Body Keeps the Score at age 10. Must be some real trauma regarding the Brits' parents.
  6. The class divide is more pungent here than on The OC. In a good way.
  7. Why are there no cast members from The OC? Josh, if you are reading this––please bring Rachel Bilson or Mischa Barton for season 2.
  8. The only thing I really dislike (aside from the obnoxious wealthy pianist teen) is the title of the show. Why not just call it The C Word. C for c*nt. Lol. RIP Dawson's Creek.

Who else didn’t Marissa being removed at the end of S3 coming

Just putting this out there but, given all the attention that Marissa got, how literally crazy every was over, I was so shocked when she got in the car crash. It was like the one person that got the most attraction from literally everyone in the show, was just gone 😱

Season 2 Marissa/Trey:Ryan Spoiler

Ok so I have a problem with Seth telling Ryan. Wait, let me back it up first. When Ryan told Trey he had to leave Newport for good, Ryan DEFINITELY would have told the group! I mean, that’s HUGE news! So if he had told them that then he never would’ve found out! But I get it I get it, there’s no drama there for the show rendering the whole storyline a mute point in the first place 🤷‍♂️

Marissa is amazing but also the worst

I know this discussion has been beaten like a dead horse but I just wanted to add something because I recently started watching the OC and it’s turned into my ultimate comfort show. My brother died last year and I stumbled upon this show and for some reason this show just makes me feel at peace and is such an easy watch.

I love Marissa, she’s so kind and empathetic and has had a really rough life. But I also don’t like her at all. I think her empathy gets in the way of the relationships she already has. Ryan and her both have savior complexes but Marissa always finds people who she wants to “save” and she puts them above everyone else in her life. It’s totally okay to care for people but caring for people to the point of upsetting those people who are already in your life is problematic.

I believe her when she says she would never cheat on Ryan but she put both Oliver and Johnny above Ryan so many times. When you’re dating someone there are boundaries and I feel like your partner should always come first (as long as the person you’re dating is being reasonable and isn’t just being territorial). Ryan had valid reasons to be worried about both Oliver and Johnny and she still chose them over him every time. When your partner is uncomfortable with a situation you should put their feelings at the forefront as long as they’re being reasonable. Caring for others is an amazing quality but it isn’t anyone’s job to save anyone else. All you can do is be supportive and love people but still have boundaries when necessary.
