📍New rules and subreddit update

Hello!

Just wanted to update the community on what's going on and to get some feedback. For those who are unaware, we are a new modteam put in place after Reddit locked r/TorontoDriving down. Last week, we reopened the sub to submissions and we have made some changes.

In our first community post asking for feedback, a big problem you guys pointed out was the rampant racism and toxic comments present here. We want to assure everyone that we are here to fix that while not being overly restrictive on discussion. The point of this subreddit is Toronto DRIVING, not politics and especially not race baiting culture wars. There will be no tolerance for prejudiced comments making sweeping generalizations. Feel free to shit on the person's driving but not on their race! (doubly so if you can't even see who's driving!!) We have already handed out a bunch of temporary bans for such comments and will be moving to permanent bans for reoffenders so be warned!

Anyway, we have created a set of rules that we hope can keep this sub clean. Please let us know if we missed anything or if you have any feedback, thanks!

Proposed New rules:

1. Must be relevant to driving in Toronto

Your post must be related to driving on the roads/highways in the City of Toronto and the municipalities bordering Toronto - Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham and Pickering.

Exceptions can be made for exceptional videos but should be in the GTHA area.

2. No racism, prejudice or hatespeech

There is zero tolerance for hate.

Do not make prejudiced comments or generalizations targetting a particular group of people.

Do not make assumptions about race or gender (especially when it's not known or relevant).

Do not use any toxic language that is associated with racism such as slurs, epithets, name-calling, stereotypes and dog-whistle terms.

3. Be civil to other members and mods

Do not use excessive profanity or name-calling. Attack the action - NOT the person. Threads that devolve into a personal attack back and forth will be locked and removed.

Sending abusive modmail will get you muted without explanation.

4. No doxxing or witch hunting

License plates and faces recorded in a public place are allowed but posting private info like names, addresses and social media is not allowed. Do not speculate on or ask for such info. Only information confirmed by verified sources such as police and reputable news outlets are allowed. Do not post license plate info or pics of people with unsubstantiated stories (video or it didn't happen).

If you have private information that is relevant to an accident, please use private chat and contact the user or police directly. Do not post it publicly.

5. No low effort submissions like parking pics, memes, recent reposts or other spam

Low effort posts like parking pics and memes will be removed. Please check if your question or submission has already been posted recently. We will remove repetitive submissions.

Do not post any advertising, self promotion, irrelevant links, videos with excessive overlays, social media memes or story plus photo posts.

6. No editorializing or misleading titles/comments

Titles should be descriptive of the video or article submitted. Posts with overly dramatic or misleading titles will be removed.

Comments and titles that push misinformation or agendas not relevant to the post will be removed. Posts with unsubstantiated back stories may be removed at mod discretion.

7. No illegal or extreme content

Do not post anything that breaks Canadian law or Reddit Terms of Service.

Do not threaten violence or incite violence.

Do not encourage others to break the law or abuse legal loopholes.

Do not post anything that is excessively disturbing (please use Death/Injury flair if posting a bad accident).

Change log:

  • New flairs
  • Submitters can now lock comments (comment "!lock the comments" on your post)
  • Text posts are now allowed
  • No longer required to add text (body) to video posts
  • Pictures and gifs allowed in comments
  • New automated filters against racist comments
  • Heavily reported posts automatically filtered for manual review

Please let us know if there are other changes you would like to see in this subreddit. We are open to ideas!

Thanks for reading :)

Crosspost Dear Toronto Drivers: Cyclists are not your enemy.

Dear Toronto drivers,

I am a long time Toronto resident. I get around the city mostly by walking, taking transit, and biking. I am not here to criticize you. I get your frustration. Many of you need to drive to get to work, take your kids to school, get groceries, and just participate society. Unfortunately, the roads in the GTA are incredibly congested and driving is an absolute pain as a result. And it's only gotten markedly worse over the last few years, so I hear you. That is why I often walk, take transit, and/or bike whenever I can. However, I get that our situations may be different. I get that you may not be able to do the same, and that's okay. I still want to support you, because at the end of the day, we are actually the same. We both just want to get to where we are going quickly, reliably, and safely. Unfortunately, Doug Ford is preventing any of us from doing that.

His government continues to underfund the TTC resulting in a service that is incredibly unreliable. At the same time, the new transit projects they were responsible for have been so poorly managed, that the end result was over a decade of delays, billions of dollars in cost overruns, and travel times that were often slower than the busses that were being replaced. And just to add insult to injury, we just recently learned that his government is making massive service cuts on several GO Transit lines. All of this results in even more of us having to drive through an already congested core. Those who still can mostly get around by biking are now being forced to find alternates or risk their lives biking. For many, that risk will not be worth it, and their alternative will be to drive. However, some will still have no choice but to bike as they may not be able to afford a car and cannot rely on transit. The only difference is that now, they will be forced to bike in front of cars. In either case, traffic is going to get a whole lot worse...

You would think that a government that is so insistent on forcing all of us to drive would at least make it safer. Instead, Ford's government can't even be bothered to properly enforce the highway traffic act as many of you know. Removing bike lanes may make it seem as though they are trying to support you, but make no mistake, they don't care. I genuinely believe they would prefer congestion to increase so they can make their so-called "solutions" like tunnel under the 401 seem more reasonable. It would certainly benefit Ford and his buddies who would be building it.

If his government truly cared about congestion, they wouldn't have forced public servants to return to the office 5 days a week in 2025. Instead, they would have encouraged other employers to consider remote positions whenever possible. They would actively fund the TTC so that more people can rely on public transit when they do need to come down. They would encourage cities to install more bike lanes so that public transit could be used in conjunction with biking to make it even more viable, and so that they don't get in the way of drivers. They would crack down harder on rule breakers so that rule abiding drivers could feel safer on the roads. They would do whatever it takes to ensure that most people can get to where they are going without having to drive so that those who need to or want to can do so easily.

If any of this resonates with you, please contact Doug Ford and/or the Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria. I will not tell you what to say, but I do encourage you to consider that we are not your enemy. We have no fight with you, but the government wants to create one for us. They want us divided, blaming each other for our problems so that we are too distracted to notice their corruption. Please do not fall for it. Please join us in this fight.

Sincerely,

A fellow frustrated commuter.

Wasn’t sure who threw this when I was in the drive thru as I only caught a glimpse. I usually confront people that litter but this was pretty upsetting to see. There are several garbage cans in this plaza and in the drive thru.

Mildly infuriating Stop Signs Are Just a Suggestion…. Apparently

I know that this is not a new phenomenon in Toronto or the GTA, however it does seem to becoming more common than ever before. When did Stop signs and Red Lights become a suggestion rather than a law? Did I miss the memo? Like, are people in that much of a hurry to get to work that badly that they feel entitled to risk the lives of pedestrians and other drivers?

Who else hates it when you see cars with single riders cruise by in the diamond lane during rush hour? Who else gets tempted to break rules? Does anyone ever gets fined?

Close call Yielding and safely merging are optional requirements to drive in Toronto

Yielding and merging seems to be optional qualities to drive in Toronto nowadays. I guess driving in Scarborough means this is the normal standard now.

This was at Morningside Ave and Military trail.

Caught this on the 403 driving through Mississauga. Needless to say I have witnessed the same dumb move multiple times this summer.

Edit: I was in the HOV lane, not the left lane!

If you’re the grey Ford F-150 that was rear-ended by a black Nissan SUV August 29th at 5:40pm on Dufferin (northbound) at the 407 Westbound on-ramp, please DM me!

If you’re the driver of this black Nissan, you’re a real piece of work for fleeing the scene.

Happy to post a pic of the offending vehicle if someone could please help me out! Tried linking to imgur but no bueno.

I was focusing on the pedestrians crossing and with this being an all-way stop I wasn’t expecting him to just go right in front of me and I had to stop suddenly. I gave him a honk just to say please watch for the stop sign and he confronted me and said “get a life”.
