First prototypes were built 1977 and full production lasted from 1983 until 1994. They were built by Talbot and designed to be coupled in a way that the fronts could be connected. For that reasons the cockpit of the train was built elevated and it got the nickname "Koploper" (from durch "head walker") because passanger could walk through the "head"/front of the train. This feature was disused and removed starting 2005 due to low usage and technical difficulties.

In service since 1977 this electric multiple unit drives all over the Netherlands, transporting 198 (NS class 4000, 3 parter) up to 257 (NS class 4200, 4 parter) passanger with a speed up to 140kmh.

Stadler's double decker solution for regional and interregional trains the Kiss is a train primarily used in Europe. Countries like Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg, Hungary and the nordics and baltic countries use products based on the Stadler Kiss product line.

"Kiss" is an acronym for "Komfortabler Innovativer Spurtstarker S*-Bahn-Zug*", meaning "comfortable, innovative, sprint-capable suburban train". Even if it isn't marketed as a long distance train, it is also used as a regional and interregional trains but also as suburban trains.

The Siemens Vectron is one of the most used modern locomotives. Used in freight and passanger service, the Vectron can be seen in multiple countries, like Germany (DB BR 193), Switzerland (BLS Re 475), Poland (PKP EU46), Czechia (ČDC 383), Austria (ÖBB 1293), Hungary (MAV 471) or Denmark (DSB EB 3200) to name a few.

With the possibility to customise the Vectron, you can get locomotives that can go up to 230km/h or as slow as 120km/h. The cheaper, non customisable Locomotive by Siemens, based on the Vectron is called "Smartron". It is a serial produced locomotive.

There is also the possibility to get a Dualmode locomotive. Built for either shunting or non electrified routes, the Dualmode can be fitted with a electric and diesel or battery powered motor.

A diesel hydraulic switching locomotive used in Germany as the BR 1271, Switzerland as the Am 842 or Luxembourg as class 1100.

Built between 2002 and 2016 as a stronger version of the Vossloh G800 BB, iping the power from 1.100hp to 1.500hp and used mainly for use on marshalling yards.

The DB BR 12 or former DR BR 01.10 are tenderlocomotives and were follow ups and upgrades from Germany's flagship steamlocomotives, the DR BR 01.

Built between 1939 and 1940, they were removed from service in 1975. Many of them now are museum or memorial locomotives, the rest got scrapped. 10 of the former 54 locomotives are still around, some are still maintained and driveable and used for nostalgic trips through Germany.

Being able to go up to 150km/h they we're the backbone of Germany's highspeed- and fasttrain network. Due to regulations their top speed got lowered to 140km/h. Backwards they can go up to 50km/h due to the tender in the back.

Being the fastest IntercityExpress (ICE) in Germany, this ICE 3 with the name "Munich" is the only Trainbow in the ICE fleet. Instead of the typical red stripe Intercity and IntercityExpress trains are fitted with, the Railbow ICE 3 is fitted with a Rainbow.

ICE 3s (BR 403 and 406 the Multisystem variant, which are out of service since April 2025) can drive up to 300km/h in Germany and even 320km/h in France. Developed and built 1996 to 2007 this was the first electric multiple unit ICE (besides the ICE T which back then was designed and built as an Intercity) after the ICE 1 (BR 401) and ICE 2 (BR 402) had power cars. Also new was the so called "Lounge" where guests could look into the cab. The clear wall could be obfuscated for privacy reasons.

The newest train in Germany's Intercity Express fleet is the Talgo produced ICE L. Contrary to the undercarriage motorisation of previous ICE generations this ICE is again a locomotive hauled ICE. Currently pulled by DB BR 193 (Siemens Vectron) and DB BR 248 (Siemens Vectron Dualmode), those trains reach up to 160kmh with the Dualmode locomotive and 230kmh with the full electric locomotive.

Planned is the use with DB BR 105 which are also produced and build by Talgo. Those are currently in testing and not yet permitted to drive on german railroads.

The dutch VIRM "Verlengd interregiomaterieel" is a doubledecker train build with either 4 (VIRM-IV) or 6 (VIRM-VI) cars built by Bombardier Transportation and Alstom with a capacity between 400 and 620 seats.

Build between 2002 and 2009 they are a staple of dutch railway infrastructure, they were extended IRMs (which previously were only 3 cars long). Therefore their name "extended Interregiomaterial (as in rolling stock)". Part of the first VIRM were extended DD-IRM and also VIRM II and VIRM IV.

As part of the electrification of the Albula railway between St. Moritz and Thusis the Rhaetian Railway (short RhB) needed new and stronger locomotives. For that purpose the RhB bought 6 locomotives of the type Ge 6/6 I, nicknamed "Rhaetian Crocodile". 1921 the locomotives 401 to 406 went into service, 1922 the locomotives 407 to 410, 1925 No. 411 and 412 and 1929 the last 3, No. 413 to 415.

No. 407 is now part of the Albula Museum in Bergün, No. 402 is part of the Luzern Verkehrshaus, No. 411 is part of the German Technik Museum and No. 414 and 415 are driveable museum locos and used by the RhB for special trains and occasions.

Being able to pull up to 150t with 30kmh at inclines up to 45‰ this locomotive made steamers obsolete on the network of the RhB. Pulling heavy and high value trains (like the Glacier Express) throught the Rhaetian railnetwork.

The german V60 is one of the oldest and smallest switchers still in service. Being built during the end of the steam age the V60 was the small form factor shunter for the former Deutsche Reichsbahn.

Being a 3 axle small shunter with a higher adhesion weight the only 11m long switcher is able to move medium weight around. Mainly used nowadays by historic railways it can be used to build passenger trains or haul small factor passanger trains.

The BR 442 (sometimes also 1442) is a german passenger train built by Bombardier (after being bought now Alstom). Talent is an acronym for "Talbot leichter Nahverkehrs-Triebwagen" Talbot being the original creators "Talbot Waggonfabrik", light regional traffic railcar.

464 of those trains were built for the german rail network. Most trains are owned by the DB, some by Abellio, National Express and Cantus. Built with a top speed of 160km/h and a capacity of up to 350 people, this train isn't an uncommon sight in the german regional network.

Due to it's crashhead it is nicknamed "Hamsterbacke" (hamster cheeks).

Since March of 2026 the dutch company GoVolta offers cheap long distance trains between Amsterdam and Berlin as well as a planned route between Amsterdam and Paris. Due to not having their own locomotives GoVolta coorporates with Train Charter Services (short TCS) in the Netherlands and therefore using ex NS class 1700 locomotives and switches locomotives shortly after the german border to german class 193 Siemens Vectrons by Railpool.

GoVolta uses fromer belgian I10 cars which they redid for their service, redoing the interioir and exterior.

Shown in the pictures is the GoVolta train on its way to Berlin in the dutch city of Hengelo, pulled by the TCS owned NS 1700.

Build between 1988 and 1993 the ICE 1 is the flagship of the German InterCity Express fleet and the german answer to the French TGV o Japanese Shinkansen. Built by companies like AEG, Krauss Maffei, Krupp and Siemens (besides others) this train was built for speed but also passenger comfort.

With a length of 358m this train can carry up to 700 people. Equipped with 2 first class, 9 second class and a restaurant carriage the trains speeds through Germany with speeds of up to 280kmh.

Build for the Luxembourgh Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, the Luxembourg national railway.

The Alstom Coradia Max is a Highcapacity version of the Alstom Coradia Stream, featuring double decker cars. Build with either a capacity of 340ish people (class 2400) or almost 700ish people (class 2450) these are the newest trains in the CFL fleet.

The SBB RABe 501, called SBB Giruno (from the romansh word "girùn" for buzzard) internally called Stadler SMILE for "Schneller Mehrsystemfähiger Innovativer Leichter Expresszug" (english: "speedy multi-system innovative lightweight express train"), is a Swissbuild and operated train servicing Switzerland, Germany and Italy.
Trains of this type services some Intercity routes in Switzerland besides the Eurocity route from Basel to Hamburg, the Eurocity route from Frankfurt to Milano as well as from Basel and Zurich to Milano, Venice and Florence. On the Italy Eurocity routes the SBB also uses SBB RABe 503 "Astoro".

With 11 cars (4 first class cars, 1 restraunt car and 7 second class cars, one of them with a family area (indicated by the Bernese Mountain dog and the cat above the door)) total the Giruno spans 202m.

Besides the SBB the austrian Westbahn also uses Stadler SMILE trains in their fleetto service the route from Vienna to Villach via Graz and Klagenfurt.

After I skipped 2 weeks due to personal issues going on, I am now continuing this tiny side quest of mine.

With the Intercity 1 going out of service this year, most of already out of service or soon to go out of service, I think this is a valid contender for this weeks Trainsbian Tuesday.

The BR 101 is a electric locomotive build between 1995 and 1999 as a Intercity locomotive and capabilities to go up to 200 kmh. Following their predecessor the BR 103 and BR 120, the BR 101 soon replace those locomotives and became a sight all over Germany in the slower Intercity service.

For the Intercity 1 the Deutsche Bahn used previously built cars and rebranded them as Intercity cars.

The DB BR V100 is a locomotive build by MaK between 1958 to 1963.

With a motor of 1'100PS the locomotive can accelerate up to 90km/h. Now sold to private companies or scraped the locomotive is a staple of private rail companies all over Germany an all rounder in hauling all kind of trains and freight.

Besides the SBB Re 420 "Bobo" the SBB Re 460 is the most common locomotive especially in swiss passanger service. Pulling trains like Intercity, the 119 locomotives of the SBB Re 460 class are one of the most iconic locomotives all over Switzerland.

Built from 1991 to 1996 the Re 460 is present as SBB but also BLS locomotives, with the latter it is mainly used in freight traffic.

Germany's most seen doubledecker multiple unit, the Desiro HC replaces the locomotive hauled double decker trains in most regions. Used by multiple companies, like the National Express, ODEG, Averio or DB itself. But also in Egypt and Israel the Desiro HC is used or planned to be used.

Able to be configured as a 4-parter up to a 6-parter the HC can pack a lot of people compared to singledecker units. Most units only manage 160kmh, while there are also some that manage up to 190kmh.

Designed and built by Alstom the class (1)440 Coradia Continental is an electrical unit used in Germany by multiple companies in regional traffic. First build as the "pug" version (due to the shorter, stubby nose) it had to be rebuilt in it's now "grinnig cat" version due to not meeting the standard for german crash noses.

Reaching speeds of 160km/h they're very versatile and used be the DB, HLB or enno.

A bit delayed because I was busy, but here is the Trainsbian Megathread.

Developed as the ICNT "InterCity Neigetechnik (Tilting technology)" is an Intercity Express train designed for slower highspeed travel on older routes. Using a bogey that is able to tilt, the train can reach speeds up to 230km/h on older, not for highspeed trains build and more bendy routes.

Build as the T7 (class 411; 7 cars), T5 (class 415; 5 cars) and TD (class 605; Tilting diesel; 4 cars), the ICE T was an alternative to the slower regional trains on regional routes. The ICE TD was mainly build for Eurocity travel between Denmark and Germany and capable to go onto a ferry to travel between the two countries and also for Intercity highspeed travel on non electrified routes. Discontinued in 2017 most TD trains are either scrapped or owned by museums. Two trains (605 017 and 019) are active as test trains under the name "Advanced TrainLab".

The T5 was mainly build as reinforcment for the T7 fleet and therefore 2 cars shorter. Officially discontinued in 2026 two trains are still in service while others are awaiting scrapping or selling.

Furthermore 5 T5 were designed to be able to travel in Switzerland. But due to being shorter than the T7 the end cars of them where swapped onto build T7 trains, while the original T7 end cars were swapped onto T5 trains because the required technology was build into the end cars. Therefore the trains 1120, 1121, 1122, 1124 and 1125 became 1520, 1521, 1522, 1523 and 1524.

There were also 3 ICE T7 owned by the austrian ÖBB which are still in service under the class 4011.

Due to its short more rounded nose the ICE T family gained the nickname "Stups" (Boop) and is one, if not the cutest train of the DB ICE fleet.
