Incoming freshman moving from Florida lol. Just curious about what winter gear is truly needed vs not.

I’m taking calc ibl, but got put in the section that does not work with my part time job. I want to switch to another section but my advisor said it’s already full and I just need to go in the waitlist during add drop. I was wondering if it would be worth it to email the professor or math department explaining my situation, or if that’s just obnoxious and won’t help me at all.

Do I add the course during add/drop and send the petition form? Or is there a special process to sign up for the 5th course.

Incoming sophomore, have no idea what I want to study or do. I would want to do something slightly more quantitative so was thinking of caam but that has a lot of analysis/proofs. Maybe i would switch to cs+ds/stats but have never coded before, am I cooked? Everyone says cs job security is gone+only for cracked ppl and especially if im starting so late lowkey whats the point. i don’t really know what I wanna do in future but maybe something in finance or tech. Thoughts/advice on what I should study then? 

Brown philosophy PhD programme

Hello everybody,

I'm a European student currently trying to figure out where I might want to pursue a PhD in the US, and I'd really appreciate some advice from people who are familiar with Chicago's philosophy PhD programme.

My main interests are political philosophy and social theory, particularly 20th-century and contemporary thought. I'm interested in areas such as critical theory, pragmatism, postmodern/post-structuralist theory, and thinkers like Habermas, Rorty, Schmitt, Foucault, etc. I'm still early in my studies, so my interests will probably develop quite a bit over the next few years, but that's roughly the intellectual direction I'm currently interested in.

At the moment, I'm in my second year of a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, and I'm starting my first year of a separate Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. These are two completely separate bachelor's degrees at two different programs, it's not a combined bachelor's, or double-major within one degree which I think makes me somewhat more competitive(?). I'm hoping that having substantial training in both political science and  philosophy could be useful if I eventually apply for a PhD focused on political philosophy/social theory.

I'm currently only a sophomore, so I'm not applying anytime soon. I'm mainly trying to understand the landscape early so I can choose my courses, reading, research interests, and eventually master's/other preparation accordingly.

Hello! Do you have any advice for MATH 15200? Is it worth practicing textbook problems? Does the course differ much by instructor?

Incoming first-year here. I know this is old news, and there’s nothing I can do about it since the deadline was two months ago, but I randomly thought of it today and can’t get it out of my head. When I received emails about this award, I considered nominating the teacher that I was closest to in high school, but I brushed it off. I’d already thoroughly expressed my appreciation for this teacher over the years I had them through small gifts and thank you notes, so I felt like nominating them for this award was a bit excessive. However, upon reflecting on it, I feel like this decision was especially bad because they wrote one of the letters of recommendation I used for my UChicago application. I’m assuming this award is not that big of a deal, but I still do feel guilty for not nominating them during the three months I had to do it.

I got a housing assignment I don't really like (I-House) as an incoming freshman, and I'm curious how hard it is to switch dorms next year. From what I read online it seems like the only way to change dorms is to either get really lucky or get pulled in by another group. I just don't want to get locked into this dorm all two years (or four if I want to live on campus).

What is the best wash/dry/fold service for uChicago students?

Hi all, I got placed into a double room in I-House. I already tried asking the housing about whether they could send us the most updated picture of the room (since the 360 virtual thingy showed a bunk bed but they said my room won’t be a bunk bed).

I am wondering if
1. We will have a central fan? (Since in the 360 thing it doesn’t seem to have one)
2. Will we get a rug?
3. Is there only one closet for two people?
4. How spacious will it be?

I would also really appreciate it if anyone is willing to share any pictures of the double room at I-House to give me & my roommate a better idea on what to buy/leave from home.

Guys is the dating life awful at uchicago?? I need some advice I’m nervous it’s horrible

I'm in a Woodlawn double as an incoming first year. Any suggestions for items I should bring/buy/ship that were particularly useful and/or necessary? Which can I buy locally in Hyde Park vs best to ship or pack? Really grateful for help with this list.
1. Desk lamp
2. Over the door hanging rack with hooks
3. Blankets (are Woodlawn heaters oppressively hot?)
4. Underbed storage organizer (is that really needed? If so, what do you recommend?)
5. How soon do I need my winter gear? Can I get them sent to me at a later date?
6. Anything that is not on the standard dorm packing list that you found useful?

How selective is the piano program to get into? How many ppl are there in total and are there many first yrs in it? What is the level of the members? Are there any online videos of performances? Any commentary would be helpful, thank you

Hi everyone, I'm a member of the Board of Visitors at CIERA-Northwestern and want to make sure you're aware of our hackathon sign up. Info below and a couple quick notes, especially since we have had plenty of UChicago students in the past and one of our co-leads is a current UChicago undergraduate:

• Our host, 1871, has room for 300 people.  If you want to be at the hackathon please sign up for the in-person option even if there is a large waitlist.  Given the rate of no-shows and cancellations, we expect to offer spots to several hundred people from the waiting list.  We may explore some overflow space nearby if demand warrants it.
• There is a new theme and the hackathon has moved within NASA to Citizen Science. This year’s challenges may be used to get the next man or woman to the moon and beyond.

I'm traveling to UChicago in ~2mo (mid October) for a conference and need to find a hotel. I am hoping to find something relatively affordable so that I don't bankrupt my lab, and I need to go to the David Rubenstein forum for the conference if that helps at all wrt to location since I'm hoping to be walking distance.
