Honors and Classes

Upvotes

Hello!! Im part of the honors college and Im facing a bit of a dilemma. When i first got accepted to Honors, it came at a pretty bad time as all the honors that could work for me were full and I completely forgot to look for a FYSH that would work for me. Now, Ive already got all my classes, and one that would work actually opened up! Except that I would have to drop a class, and the one I'd have to drop I already bought a non-refundable 200 dollar textbook :,) Am I going to be disqualified from honors if I dont take my FYSH this semester? Ive already scheduled a meeting with the madame in charge of honors transfer students, but I don't want the add drop period to end before I make my decision.

Carpooling from Boston area to Umass Lowell?

Hi all, I’m a student dorming at Umass Lowell and I commute back to Revere/Boston every thursday. I was wondering if there were any UML student commuters/drivers from the boston area that would be willing to carpool and give me a ride. I’ll pay for the trip too and we can negotiate payment but I’m really open to it, commuting by the commuter rail sucks.

Always choose that off-campus job if you can

I’ve worked both on campus and off campus and I’d say that unless you have work study and you have reasonable commute then it’s almost always worth it to choose a retail or fast food service job over a departmental position.

In all of my “minimum wage“ jobs I’ve worked over the years, rarely any of them actually paid $15/hr. Its always paid more like $16.25, $17, $18.25, etc… it’s only when working and applying to jobs on campus that I’ve consistently found that they want to pay us the bare minimum. They also want offer the LOWEST hours possible (5 to 10) due to funding whereas in my experiences, managers are happy to offer you hours. Leftover payroll? pls come in. Someone called out? pls come in. Holiday season? pls come in. My bill is $9k this semester. I’d rather be working retail and be berated by idiot customers for 25 hours a week.

Other cons? Lots of competition. Everyone wants an on-campus job. You can apply to 20 jobs on Jobhawk and they likely wont reach out bc they hired someone else before they looked at your application. Employers act as funny as retail managers sometimes. I was told they’d reach back in a week. I got ghosted for at least 2 weeks before I saw the listing gone and then they told me they hired someone else days after that. Oh, and also 90% of the job listings on departmental won’t even apply to you bc the reqs are hyper specific. So basically u had no chance to begin with. Some jobs are at awkward hours. Closes at 5, Closes on weekend, etc… few exceptions are the rec center and libraries but that retail or fast food job…. That’s open until 9, 10, 11, even 12am at wegmans. and you can do closing shifts.

Pros? Some jobs you can put on your professional resume or application to grad school. Teaching assistant, research assistant, etc… and it’s on campus. U don’t have to travel far and it works best if it fits in your schedule. but if you did have to travel for an off campus job, there’s plenty of buses in Lowell THAT IS FREE that takes you everywhere in the city and outside too. But Uh, another pro for on-campus jobs is that some jobs are just TOO EASY. You don’t do anything most of the day at some on campus jobs.

Cons for off campus jobs? Managers can be mean. Customers can be mean. Sometimes you wanna die. Evil corporations. Weird policies. but like I said earlier theres bills that gotta be paid and sometimes you get PTO and free stuff.

Course workload

Hi I heard that algorithms by prof Hugo Atikaya is one of the toughest to pass. Is that true? Algorithms is a requirement for masters in cs. Is the course really that hard? Please give some insights.

I have seen a drone flying above south and east campuses last year and now this year. Who owns it? Is it for surveillance?

Adding and Dropping Classes

Some of my fall classes have their Canvas opened up. I saw the workload for a class and don't think it'll work with my schedule this semester, but I need to replace it with a different class to be considered enrolled full time.

How long does it take for you to get enrolled in the Canvas portal after dropping a class and enrolling into a new section? Thanks in advance

how is the math master’s program here?

hey all! i’m currently a senior sound recording tech major + math minor and i’m considering potentially going to grad school here for math (education focus). i’ve been a math LA for most of my undergrad, and while i applied to that job on a total whim, i’ve actually grown to really love the work. I find helping people learn so rewarding and would love to keep doing this after I graduate in some way, whether full time or as a side hustle. Ideally, I’d prefer a more involved role than essentially just being a TA’s assistant, and I could see myself being a tutor of some sort and/or teaching at a college or maybe a high school. i’m not sure exactly what i want yet, but I’ll have an audio internship in the spring that should help me solidify my overall career wants and post-bachelor’s plans more.

i’m going to talk more with the faculty i know in the math department about this, but i was also wondering if anyone here had any experience with the master’s program that they could share. is it worth the money? would i need additional pre-reqs as someone who’s already passed Calc I-III, Discrete I-II and Complex Variables I? what are you doing now with your degree if you’ve already graduated?

Is it worth it?

Hey guys! To keep everything short and sweet I recently have been looking to further my education at the sweet ol’ age of 22. I have been wanting a big life changes and move states to kinda have a fresh restart and was wondering if the school is worth the out of state tuition?

Little background, I wasn’t the best student till my junior and sophomore year so my CUM GPA is low 3.0, I want to major in History (I don’t know if my gpa meets the thresholds) I’m looking to board on campus for my 4 year tenure there as well.

Do you guys think it’s worth it or should I find an instate school?

Convocation Question

Hi. I’m a transfer student and commuter and was wondering if going to convocation was required? I already did my transfer orientation, registered for classes, got my UCard and my parking permit. The reason I’m asking is because I’m away on a trip and won’t be back until Monday afternoon so I wouldn’t be able to go, but was wondering if that will negatively impact me or prevent me from starting my classes on Tuesday. I also wasn’t able to attend the transfer welcome day that was today either so I hope that won’t be a problem either..

Changing a class / changing time of a class question

I'm trying to change some classes (and change the time of some existing classes) that I have right now but I'm not seeing any options for new classes / time spots when I try swapping them. I emailed my advisor and he mentioned adding/dropping a class? How does this work? I heard that swapping is a better idea than adding/dropping but I am not sure what to do. Any advice helps.

Housing

URGENT: Need a student who is willing to move in to housing near North Campus. You get your own bedroom and furniture and will be living with two male students. Only requirements are that you clean up after yourself and not be too loud inside the house. Rent is 850/month plus utilities.

Has anyone received financial aid for 26-27? I got my invoice dated 8/12/26 with zero aid from state, federal and school. Neither loans. Nothing and the invoice is 21k for Fall semester. I am a resident of MA. Expect Famiy Contribution is about 7k and got 0 aid. Does it make sense?
