WeatherBar7 - Weather for vintage macs

It is still very much in-development, but I am working on full desktop weather software that runs on vintage macs! It will be released once its fully built out for everyone to play with and do whatever, as a weather nerd I find this fun and itll squeeze more life out of my vintage macs. I'd like to find information on how to write custom After Dark screensavers, because that could plug into this somehow.

MDD speaker replacement?

Thumbnail

Both of my MDD systems have toasted speakers and buying a 23 year old replacement seems crazy when it’s only a matter of time before the replacement fails. I’ve taken one apart using a razor blade and heat gun (not fun) but I’m not able to remove the original JBL speaker from the mount itself as it seems to have also been glued in addition to being screwed and tabbed into place. With enough heat and force I’m sure I can fully remove it but there will be damage to the housing. This all said is there an aftermarket option I could use to replace these failed units? No I do not want to go the external pro speaker plugin option. I want something that’s original looking but new. Just trying to figure out what others have done as I blaze this path.

I recently bought an iMac G3 Snow and I plugged it in and turned it on, and nothing happens aside from these two icons flashing. I’ve tried connecting a USB mouse and it won’t show up either.

Restored a $50 Performa 578 that was left outside. The analog board fix is a literal piece of wood.

Got this Performa 578 a month ago on Marketplace for a whopping 50 bucks. It had been left outside and it showed. Dirty, gross, and it made a very concerning whining/arcing noise when it was on.

Traced the noise to a transformer on the analog board. If I pushed on it while it was running, the noise stopped. Couldn't source a new analog board or transformer, so I did the next best thing: wedged a piece of wood between the transformer and some other component and secured it with hot glue. Amazingly, that completely solved it. No noise, no display issues, it just works. (Second pic is the fix. My finest work. :3)

While I was in there I recapped the analog board and logic board (tantalum on the logic board). I also deep cleaned the entire case. The original hard drive still works, so I did a fresh install of System 7.5.3. The CRT needed some adjustment but man, these Trinitrons look awesome.

The plastics on this thing are BRITTLE. Every time I take it apart I make it worse. Tabs snapping, cracks forming around the case screws (one of the case ones completely shattered). I'm genuinely terrified to open it at this point. Is there any way to fix or prevent this, or am I destined to slowly turn the case into dust? I've heard people mention epoxy, or even baking the plastic?? Any advice is welcome.

Got a 32MB SIMM on the way to bump it up to 36MB. Anyway, 50 bucks well spent.

I last made a post where my powerbook turns on but doesnt display anything nor even whirrs and clicks within the system

now it whirrs and there appears to be clicking sounds but the screen is still dark despite looking like it turns on. Still would appreciate some help on this. Is this a drive thing or a monitor thing? What do you suppose I can do next? All tips appreciated. Thanks!

iBook G3 900mhz model

I’m looking into purchasing a very well maintained iBook g3, and was wondering if any of you on here have suggestions or tips about it. I have done some research, and I know about the hard drive replacement horror. Aside from that, anything else I need to know?

Another thing to mention, I’m doing this primarily for the Mac OS9 nostalgia.

South Bay Collectors: Performa 637CD at the Savers on Homestead

I hope this is allowed, mods this doesn't seem like it's against any rules. I was at the Savers on Homestead and Lawrence yesterday and there's a Performa 637CD for $200 in the electronics section. It looked like it was in good physical condition and had a mouse and keyboard with it.

I was very tempted but there's no room at the inn at the moment. I'm traveling so lugging around a heavy desktop isn't in the cards at the moment. But I wanted to get the word out to other collectors. I have no idea if the system works or any other details than it was there as of yesterday afternoon. Hopefully some South Bay Performa fan can snag it.

Been getting more into turn of the century Mac gaming, with a working G3 iMac and G5 Tower. Some really fun ones here, and it's cool to see how these play as the Mac ports.

Picked up from ShopGoodwill fwiw.

Recently came across this PDS card alongside a Macintosh SE (SuperDrive) I received.

So far, I was able to somewhat find about this card, but couldn’t find much information about this specific combination; 3 ports, with no switches on the daughterboard rather than the usual switch + 2/3 ports.

Do you guys have any ideas about this? Personally, it seems rather close to the IIsi/SE/30 variants.

Affordable iMac G3 DV Flyback Replacements? (LG)

I've got this iMac G3 DV 400 with power issues, and it might be the flyback due to screen-related power issues. I'm mentally preparing for the worst incase the flyback's actually the cause, as I plan to open it up to check for visibly bad caps in a couple days.

If it is the flyback, what are my cheapest options for a replacement? From what I've seen, most of them ship from the U.S so the shipping can be pretty expensive, as I live in Norway which in in northern Europe.

Getting a donor parts machine isn't viable here either as they basically never pop up for sale online.

Can you boot a USB on a Mac Mini G4?

I don't have any big enough DVDs for Leopard so I've been trying to use a USB. I've seen mixed responses, most say it works, some say it doesn't. I've personally never been able to boot a USB. Should I just cave in and buy some big enough DVDs?

The later version if this was featured in Bob Brant's book Build Your Own Macintosh and Save a Bundle and another book I think, I cannot remember the name. This is one of the first models with a hand built video adapter (TTL?, cannot remember) and a SCSI board.

Anyone out there have one of these or remember the video spec? I will be documenting it in the future, I just took some pictures while I was moving it.
