Mod Post Periodic reminder: rules

Post image
5 Upvotes

Rule 2 is the thing. If your post sounds like an ad, is an ad, links to an ad, etc - it’s gonna get nuked. There are (wow) 23000 accounts that are subscribed here now and it’s been growing. I do not have the foggiest idea how many of those as a percentage are actual humans vs bots, and so if your post seems fishy, out it goes.

This is a space for person to person discussion. Ask and post about the questions you have about nutrition, exercise, movement, recovery, mental health, whatever - that is the content we want, and that’s what this place is for. If nobody posts that, there won’t be much content here because …all the new posts will just get dumped for being a referral funnel into someone’s e-business. I’m all for business, but I swear someone needs to make the “help me build my wellness app” sub because THAT one would get tons of activity. Maybe all 50000 of those people can figure out how to merge into the Voltron of Wellness and make it happen for themselves.

I kid. Somewhat. Kinda. The rules posted here are directly linked in the “new post” process so they’re not a mystery. We do try to apply them with an even hand but there will be missteps. The ones who reach out get a “thanks but no” if it’s a commercial thing, or we just rip down the ones that go for it without a clearance. All your moderators here are volunteer and shag spam/ clean up as we can because we want to TRY to keep this place as valuable as we found it- but it’s an ongoing thing. For those of you who are actual people- please stay and talk. For the bots and “let me use this place to advertise,” well - we will do our best to make your post fall flat.

Happy weekend people. I’m going to get a tattoo tomorrow from an artist I’ve been following for years and she’s finally close by. It’s gonna be fun.

Seeking Advice Shoulder pain is messing wit my sleep — has anyone found a good mattress that helps with shoulder pain?

My shoulder’s been bothering me mostly in the morning. During the day it usually feels manageable but after sleeping on my side all night, I end up waking up sore and stiff on one side. What made me question my mattress is that I recently slept in a guest bed for a couple of nights and barely noticed the same pain. I’ve tried switching pillows and sleeping more on my back but I almost always end up on my side again. Has anyone noticed their shoulder pain improving after changing mattresses? I’m not looking for any specific brand, just wanna know if there’s a specific firmness or type that would be better for side sleeping and shoulder pressure.

Daily Wellness and Check In What are some of the interesting paid Wellness related activities other than a gym or massage parlor membership?

My company reimburses up to $75 a month for a wellness related membership.  I am a member at Massage Envy and lately haven't been using them much and have accumulated too many hours to keep up that I have paused my membership and been gifting the hours to friends.  I also go to Planet Fitness regularly which is something I'd always keep.  I am 57 m, thinking of alternatives.  Thoughts?

Mental & Emotional Health I Need To Get Away 👻

I have a solo Halloween weekend and I'd love to 👻 the trauma and mental exhaustion away. I've never been to a wellness retreat but feel it may do me some good.

I've read some posts about some of these wellness classes traumatizing folks even more so hoping to not do that. I'm a single mom, just drained from carrying everything on my shoulders and parallel parenting with an impossible narcissist. This mama needs a break.

Only travel solo for work a few times a year and never even go to dinner by myself so this will be definitely something new for me.

Any suggestions?

Seeking Advice Mental Health Retreat Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I’ve never posted on here before due to a fear of being seen/putting myself out there, which apparently also translates to online contexts 😅 But I'm hoping to get some advice and recommendations for a retreat or program that might be a good fit for where I'm at in life right now, as I’ve been going through a difficult period and just don’t feel well on any level—emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually. I apologise for the length of this post but really appreciate any insight, advice, guidance or recommendations :)

What I'm looking for:

  • Around 2-3 weeks (minimum 10 days)
  • Budget of approximately $3,000 AUD (excluding flights) - not sure if realistic?
  • Thinking of sometime October, or November - if not then maybe February next year (all depends when I can take time off work)
  • Based in Sydney, Australia but open to travelling anywhere - ideally within about a 10-hour flight
  • Preferably somewhere nature based that is warm, tropical, beachy, and relaxing, but I'm open to any climate if it seems like the right fit
  • all inclusive or at least easy to budget so there are no surprise extra costs once you’re there

I've been struggling with depression, anxiety, social anxiety, mental fatigue/burnout, feeling stuck in fight-or-flight mode, and what feels like a pretty dysregulated nervous system for a long time now. I'm also currently navigating a stressful/toxic family environment, and I feel like I desperately need a change of scenery, some space to reset and some healing. I’d love to feel more comfortable and confident around people again and reconnect with who I am underneath all the stress and survival mode. I'd also love support in making some lifestyle changes around sleep, eating habits, and letting go of a few unhealthy behaviours/addictions. And to just be able to completely switch off and not have to think about a thing once I arrive (or at least not too much).

I've been in and out of therapy since I was a teenager and am currently seeing a new psychologist. I also have an honours degree in Psychology myself. Therapy and my studies have definitely helped me understand myself better and connect the dots between childhood experiences and how they affect me today, but lately I've been feeling like I need something different alongside traditional talk therapy — a different modality or approach (not to replace the role of therapy but to compliment it). A mind-body-soul approach to healing— not just relaxation, but something deeper and transformative.

Ideally, somewhere that also has access to psychologists or mental health professionals would be helpful/an added benefit, but I'm not looking for a clinical hospital-style environment. I've been a patient in mental health hospitals before, and whilst that was helpful, I don't think that's what I am needing right now. I also have some physical health issues, with symptoms that vary day to day, so would rather not feel pressured to attend lots of activities or back-to-back classes - not looking for a retreat where every minute of the day is scheduled, you're up at dawn every morning, and your days are packed with psychoeducational classes. I still want space and time to rest, reflect, and go at my own pace, especially with some of the unpredictable physical health symptoms and feeling so burnt out mentally.

I did ayahuasca a few years ago and, honestly, it was one of the most helpful experiences I've ever had for my mental health. Unfortunately, due to some cardiac health issues, I don't think plant medicine is something I can safely do anymore, which makes me super sad, as I hoped to work with this medicine again in the future. I'm not specifically seeking that, but I mention it because I think I'm drawn to experiences that facilitate deeper healing, self-connection, and perspective shifts rather than just relaxation. If anyone knows of/has experienced some gentler plant medicines that may not speed up the heart rate as much, I’d be very open to hearing about it.

What would be ideal:

  • A change of environment
  • Nature
  • Time to slow down
  • Nervous system support
  • Genuine human connection/warm & gentle people
  • Opportunities for healing and personal growth
  • Potentially spiritual practices or alternative healing modalities
  • Spa treatments (esp massage) - not essential/a priority but would be an added bonus

I guess the best way I can describe it is that my heart feels like it needs a hug. If anyone has attended a retreat, wellness program, healing centre, therapeutic community, or anything similar that sounds like it might fit, I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Thank you so much and I apologise again for such a lengthy post ❤️

Did you need to cut back on activity? 45, so many injuries

I'm a 45 yo women who has been active my whole life. Not like a competitive athlete, but I build stuff like large wooden sheds climbing on scaffolds, do taekwondo, etc.

In my 20s I had one full ankle tendon tear. In the last 3 years I've had 2 partial ankle tears, a 2nd degree hamstring tear, and now I'm pretty sure I tore the meniscus of one knee.

I'm starting to worry my body can't function and I'll have to cut way back. Wtf??? I'm going to talk to my GP about it when I get the knee examined. I'm just so angry.

Employer wellness reimbursement ($500/yr, use-it-or-lose-it) — what should I actually spend it on?

I work from home right now and my setup isn’t complete — I’m planning to use next year’s $500 toward building out my dream home office/desk situation. But this year’s $500 needs to go somewhere else since it expires soon.

Here are the eligible categories my employer lists:
Financial wellness: finance-related app subscriptions/workshops, tax prep fees, debt management programs, estate planning/will prep, ID theft services
Physical wellness: health membership/classes, exercise equipment, sport lessons/fees, sport team/race entry fees, fitness technology, work-from-home/home office supplies, co-workspace rental (up to $40/month)
Mental wellness: meditation/wellness apps, personal development, enrichment classes, art/music/cooking, mental stimulation puzzles
Spiritual wellness: retreats
(Financial stuff isn’t really what I’m after, so mostly skipping that category.)

Options I’m actually weighing:
Red light therapy mask — not sure if it’d get approved, leaning toward this
Oura ring — high on my list, just not sure if I’d find wearing a ring comfortable day to day since I don't ever wear them and have been lacking on my health.
ClassPass (Pilates) — could just pay out of pocket instead, undecided if it’s worth using the reimbursement on, also haven't been in the gym and feel like this might go to waste.
Laser hair removal — already doing a small area ($60/leg), thinking about expanding, but I’d need to keep paying out of pocket next year regardless since I’m putting next year’s $500 toward the home office
Already have an Apple Watch SE2, don’t wear it consistently — don't know if I should upgrade since I already don't wear this one.
Also thought about an ultrawide monitor — they look nice, but I actually like my current dual-monitor setup since it doesn’t force everything into automatic split screen, so probably not this
Into skincare in general, open to ideas there too, though not sure what would pass
Also into traveling

I can run anything by HR before buying, so open to left-field suggestions too.

Favorite wearables?

I’m a 32yo woman, I’m healthy, active and love getting biofeedback. Lately I’ve been wanting to monitor my HRV. I’m very active, I rock climb, hike, surf etc.

I want a waterproof wearable that will monitor my HRV, fitness and potentially sleep. I don’t care about BBT/menstrual cycle tracking I’ve already mastered that.

I’d like a user friendly interface, nothing crazy expensive. I’m considering a garmin watch? I do not want an oura ring as they are dumb expensive just bc they’re trendy please don’t tell me you love yours bc it’s not happening for me. I considered a ringconn if anyone has feedback on the ringconn air?

Ideally a watch bc it’s better for climbing but I’m open.

What’s your fav wearable & why?

Seeking Advice Finding it difficult to sleep until 3 am!

Hi guys! Is it just me, or has anyone else been struggling to sleep lately?

For the past few days, I’ve been unable to fall asleep before 3 a.m. I’ve tried taking magnesium and melatonin, working out and biking at night to tire myself out, avoiding my phone once I’m in bed, playing white noise, and doing pretty much everything I can to make myself comfortable but nothing seems to help.

The strangest part is that once it reaches around 3 a.m., I suddenly get sleepy and can fall asleep almost immediately. It feels like my body has its own schedule and refuses to sleep earlier.

I’m curious if anyone else has gone through something similar. Did you find out what was causing it, or anything that actually helped?

ive become that person who talks about metabolism at parties

turning 30s is wild. i used to eat whatever and not think twice. now i have to actually consider if that second beer is worth the hangover and the 3 days of bloating lol.

been thinking a lot about how my body has changed. energy isnt what it used to be, sleep is more hit or miss, and my digestion is definitely less forgiving. im not complaining exactly, just noticing. and trying to figure out what helps versus what's just expensive hype.

more intentional about diet and movement lately. also came across oztrim which seems to focus on metabolism support. they're upfront about not being tga registered which honestly made me more curious than the ones that try to sound official.

it's just nice to see some honesty in this space for once

I cant scratch the itch like i use too

I just turned 33 and I don't know why but i am hornier than ever. I masturbate twice sometimes even more everyday. It used to be that i would have a release and be good for a day or two but in about the last year that hasn't done much. Its becoming a serious burden and chore to the point i even take care of it at work from time to time. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Physical Fitness Manage health

How can I improve my health? Since childhood, I haven't been able to maintain good health. Currently, I work as a Business Consultant. How can I manage my gym time along with my work and study schedule? My office hours are from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM. I have dinner from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and from 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM, I spend time learning new skills.

Anyone else just... stopped using wellness apps entirely?

Not because I got better, just because the streaks and guilt made it worse. I'm curious what (if anything) people still use or if everyone just gave up like me.
