Old railroad bridge vs U-Haul

I do realize it's my responsibility to know what I'm driving under but I'm an idiot. It didn't even dawn on me until the truck came to an immediate stop while I was yanked in the seatbelt. Thankfully the rental place had another truck so I was able to swap it out.

Why doesn’t that bridge have any height markers on it? I can tell it’s stupid low but normally bridges should have posted on them what the clearance is.

it's 2 way on the left side, one way on the right

I’m only 5’7” and I’d worry about hitting my head on that bridge.

I’m also curious how much that was in damage.

It'll likely be $3-5k in repairs at a truck shop, more with U-Haul prices, and that's assuming it's just the front that's damaged. A full re-box could run him $10k+.

I work at a truck rental place that used to be an agent of the yellow competition to U-Haul...full re-box on a 16' truck was ~$20-25k back in 2017, I'd bet its quite a bit more now...

And no, insurance won't cover it. Collision waiver expressly excludes roof damage due to being overheight, and personal auto insurance usually requires a rental rider specifically for the roof to be covered.

You know I never heard back from the place I rented it from or their insurance. I expected someone to ask me about it.

Worth remembering that when you see someone driving a U-Haul, there is a very high likelihood that they do not know what they are doing.

I've been under that bridge on WV 17 outside Logan before. It always felt kind of low even in an SUV. It has a signed 9' clearance.

Something similar on an I-40 access road around Memphis or West Memphis. May be less than 9 ft.
