I had a $1400 macbook I had to get for school drop support for most things entirely after 5 years.
It refuses to update. Things refuse to work on it because the OS is too old. It is literally a glorified typewriter.

u/Junethemuse 5h ago
That’s wild. Every MacBook I’ve had has been supported for at least 7 years plus security updates for an additional few years.
2
u/Oddish_Femboy (my name is Bee) Trans rights !! 5h ago
Is that better?
11
u/Junethemuse 5h ago
Idk, 10 years or so of active updates and support seems pretty good to me. Not to mention the longest I ever had a windows laptop last me was 5 years before it failed or aged out and wasn’t able to support current software anymore. My laptops are MacBooks because they are reliable and durable.
But my desktop is a PC and my servers run Ubuntu because it’s better for the applications.
4
u/Whitestrake 3h ago
Yes, it is. 7+a few more years of security patches is better than entirely dropped support after 5.
That's a huge breakpoint. 7-10 years is much much more likely to last until we hit "I actually want a new device" and 5 years is much more likely to be "I could've kept this one longer". Like, that ain't nothing, that's actually important.
5 years kinda sucks actually and I totally agree you got shafted if you were forced to ditch perfectly good mac hardware at that time.
2
u/Oddish_Femboy (my name is Bee) Trans rights !! 2h ago
An extra 2 years because it was bought 2 years earlier into the life cycle than mine isn't nothing, but it's not as cool as not arbitrarily blocking updates on a device that cost more than my car would be.

Afford? You don't have a mysterious collection of USB sticks you acquired during highschool? (Didn't even steal them. I just kinda have them but no recollection of when or why.)

The school specifically required me to have a macintosh laptop because they used exclusively Macintosh software.

tbh i used to think that macbooks are overprised laptops until they switched to ARM-based chips in 2020, now there's a legitimate reason to get them over the Windows ones (and maybe a reason for them to glaze macbooks that hard lol)

The hardware is legitimately super impressive, genuinely beats most windows laptops IMO, it's just macos and the all around closedness that holds me back

I've had so many frustrations with my Razer Blade 15 that (despite my strong distaste of MacOS) it will probably be replaced at some point by a MacBook Pro because they are simply much better tools at this point.
Apple's ARM chips give them a huge lead in the areas that actually matter for using a laptop, battery life & performance on battery. Hopefully the ARM RTX Spark SoCs Nvidia recently unveiled can compete in a similar ballpark because I would prefer to stay with windows.

u/Desolver20 5h ago
Lenovo business laptops!
Built to last and with a wide selection, a good few even working very well for gaming!
And cheap as fuck if you buy them refurbished!

u/markeydarkey2 🏳️⚧️ trans rights 4h ago
I've considered those as a loooooong-time ThinkPad fan but even if hardware reliability is flawless it'd still have the same functionality limitations because the high performance hardware I need (decent CPU & dGPU) are power hogs with x86 hardware. Those tend to have a pretty limited screen selection too with panels that rarely meet my [≥120hz] + [bright] + [color accurate] criteria unfortunately.
My (2022) Blade 15 cannot do any remotely serious work until I connect it to a power outlet, it'll last maybe 2 hours web browsing. I despise MacOS and the MBP14/16 screens have terrible ghosting but they are killer for the photo & video editing work I do because of their ARM chips.
1
u/mcslender97 KPop Demon Hunters enthusiast 1h ago
Might be crazy expensive but if you don't need integrated SoC ala RTX Spark then the Zephyrus g14/g16 and MSI Stealth 16 2026 are your best bet outside this year's Razer Blade 16

u/JoJoJet- 4h ago
Tons of silicon valley companies use macbooks for everything. I'm a software engineer and vastly prefer it for development. Unix is an incredibly nice environment to develop in, and the pro models are quite powerful which is really nice. Also I couldn't tell you why, but even objectively powerful windows machines are often slow as hell. I can do a clean build of our desktop app in 3 minutes on my MacBook. A windows desktop with the same specs takes upwards of 25 minutes. Lots of this is because developers tend to hate windows so open source tooling is often worse on windows. But im sure part of it is due to Microsoft enshittification
It's not that Apple is amazing or something. Microsoft is just bad and worse every year
14
u/Fort-33 6h ago
Unix is objectively better than Windows for programming, and most business environments are not going to let you use whatever Linux distro is your favorite.
12
u/nevemlaci2 6h ago
Idk. At work we use Windows laptops but we do everything inside Linux devcontainers and have a remote machine with a lot of resources running linux that anyone can use over ssh if they want to

Tbh I tried a few Linux distros for a while, ultimately I went back to windows for Steam. I know it's better now than it used to be but I still think Windows is best for gaming. Also, the irony of referring to Windows as tyranny when you're locked into Apple lol.

As long as it supports your hardware, SteamOS is unironically better than Windows for gaming in every way. Proton is basically at the point where the vast majority of games will just run without needing to do anything, and the ones that don't can be fixed by just changing the version of Proton they run on.

my growing hatred for windows makes see why non-tech people should rather a macbook. specially given the state of most windows laptops right now. i say this as I see my Latitude's paint chipping away and the keycaps melting before her first dent.
