I’m hopeful for Classic Plus but competition creates better products for everyone

u/B4rberblacksheep 18d ago
Wait what’s Classic+. Please please tell me they’re just relaunching Classic again

u/SoNuclear 18d ago
Classic+ is basically OSRS model for wow classic, people have been asking for it forever. Basically launch classic and keep updating it a la osrs.

u/Temis37 18d ago
None of that is confirmed, ask 20 people what classic plus is and get 20 different responses
55
u/SoNuclear 18d ago
I mean, thats broad strokes the vision people are asking for. When it comes to the nitty-gritties, sure, but the basic premise of going back to classic and expanding from there is the idea and I don’t think that is a controversial opinion.
5
u/TheRSFelon Formerly Maxed 18d ago
I thought they already did this with WoW classic? Released it as it was then followed the updates?
Or will this be like OSRS and they develop new content in a totally different direction than the past?
I’m confused about the difference between classic and classic plus
10
u/helpamonkpls 17d ago
Wow classic is just literally releasing an old game and asking you to keep paying for 0 updates.
Classic plus should be like osrs where they launch Classic and you pay for updates, new zones, new classes, abilities etc. Voted on by users.

No one can agree what it should/will be, but we have had it teased and hinted at for a blizzcon announcement for a while Long with dataminers finding a new 1.6 patch which is the vanilla world that also has store products coming with it.
So yeah it might suck, but it will exist.

Never underestimate Blizzard's ability to fuck this up. It could easily just be another SoD that they abandon quickly
→ More replies (4)5
u/Smooth_One 18d ago
SoD ripped dude. They even supported it longer than they had originally planned to because it did so well. In fact I'd go so far as to say that without SoD there would be no C+.
3
u/rotorain BTW 18d ago
I know but my point was that another SoD is not what it seems like people are expecting and it could just be something like that instead of C+. Blizzard has a history of not objectively bad but disappointing announcements because they don't communicate for shit with the community.
→ More replies (1)5
u/swashfxck 17d ago
This is where they will fail.
Jagex understands that the players input towards developments or changes is vital to the OSRS experience.
Hypothetically speaking because C+ isn’t even announced OR confirmed, Blizzard has a very good track record of NOT listening to what their player base wants and that’s how they’ll treat “C+” and it will end up shit.
16
u/FuryAgain 18d ago
There is a fairly substantial hint of something called project Camelot which was the dev name for classic. The running theory is that a whole new version of classic will be announced at blizzcon.

Unrelated, but when comparing OSRS to WoW, I can’t help but highlight the insane differences between the OSRS wiki and any comparable WoW database. OSRS wiki is fucking goated, WoWhead is lacking and would greatly benefit from players using a syncing addon
84
u/Objective_Toe_49 18d ago
The runescape wiki in general is the best for any game iv ever played, it’s genuinely light years ahead that moving to other games it feels like you’re already a step behind on being able to learn new things about it

u/InSearchOfThe9 18d ago
I think it transcends beyond "best wiki for a game" to "best wiki". I'd be hard pressed to find a site on the internet that accomplishes its objective more effectively.

Thats because the wiki is essential to OSRS. There is an obscene amount of information that is not described in the game whatsoever. WoW is not like that.
20
u/Shitty_Human_Being 18d ago
As a former wow player this is the most annoying aspect of osrs. I like the game a lot, but come on, where are my tooltips?
6
u/SheepherderBorn7326 18d ago
To be fair just about everything above casual level wow isn’t explained in game either
2
u/ChilledParadox 17d ago
I'm honestly suprised there isn't a plugin that just adds 10 billion tooltips to the game, I'm pretty sure runelite could do that.
3
u/ANGEL-PSYCHOSIS btw 18d ago
theres actually kinda very little that isnt communicated, and almost all of them are items that are used on other items. if you dont know the base items it can be legitimately impossible to know. theres a lot thats obtuse because of people writing quests based off the time they were made (i hate you shilo village bronze wire) rather than having longevity, but otherwise 99% of everything important is communicated in some way
edit: and single item passives... they really should get on that
3
u/floor_wizard 18d ago
theres actually kinda very little that isnt communicated
Agreed, but it's often not until AFTER you actually need the information. New players have no way of knowing how powerful many items are until they actually obtain them. Shops and skill guides do not show item stats or passive effects.
Planning upgrade paths and deciding what to grind next in an effective way is impossible for new players without consulting the wiki.
11
u/Thanks_I_Hate_You 18d ago
There are add-ons that collect drop information for the wiki in wow to calculate drop rates. I think osrs (and rs3) has probably THE best wiki I've ever seen, but its also worth mentioning that wow has significantly more items (most of them throw away items) making it a bit harder to keep clean.

One of the reasons why modern Classic feels so different from Vanilla even if they are essentially the same game is how widespread and easily available knowledge is.
Discovery and communicating knowledge in-game is a vital part of the "magic" of old WoW. I would argue that having less knowledge available (Even if that is functionally impossible to actually do) would be a net-benefit for the game. Completely opposite of RS.
Like take questing. RuneScape quests are generally a lot of self-contained point-and-click games, and sometimes falls into the pitfalls of moon-logic that the genre often suffered from. The wiki is pretty important for questing. WoW quests (without an addon like Questie) gives you directions and instructions that aren't as clear as, say, a Skyrim quest marker, but also clear enough to get you in the right direction. Then you may stumble upon something else on the way or have to do a bit of discovery to figure out what exactly to do. So baring a few notable exceptions of badly written quests, you can figure out everything on your own from trial and error.
WoW also has a lot more of a social element, so removing the need for communicating knowledge impacts that as well. People had the choice of sharing something or keeping something a secret if they could benefit from a lack of competition, that kind of stuff. You just don't get that anymore.

u/Money_Echidna2605 18d ago
ya but they didnt release the same thing 3 more times lol, they actually improved the game. jagex also didnt have a wildly successful model to follow and were just winging it at the time, blizzard is just lazy and honestly pretty shit about updating wow.
3
u/xGALEBIRDx 18d ago
As someone who never played warcraft before, is it worth it to go to classic+ for a try? Is the issue with the current release that it's stagnant or just unfun?
15
u/Darkfirex34 18d ago
It's absolutely worth a shot. TBC Anniversary is very active and a fun experience in it's own right.
The "problem" with WoW is that it progresses in a linear vertical fashion. Raids that drop the new gear have a shelf life of 1-2 years at absolute best, and most times only about 4-8 months.
If you aren't actively playing, the gear on your character will fall out of relevance. Every new expansion is a big reset button on your stats and you begin the climb anew.
As the average MMO player gets older and has more real life commitments, OSRS' model of sidegrades and upgradescape becomes more and more attractive.
That said WoW Classic is an awesome game and during Covid it scratched an MMO itch for me that OSRS had been unable to for years. I would encourage you to give it a spin and view it open mindedly.
3
u/khatmar 18d ago
But TBC anniversary is ending in fall with Wrath Anni coming out around christmas. No way anyone starting now has a chance of cathcing up with leveling, attunes and gearing. Not unless they no life the game for the next 4 weeks, nonstop. And by then, we will be in the middle of Black Temple with Quel Danas coming out in late october.
2
u/Darkfirex34 18d ago
I mean if someone's brand new to WoW I don't think it would matter that much. By the time they're close to the end of Outland leveling we'd be close to Wrath. Gives them time to do some pug Karazhan and maybe some other raids in prepatch.
Someone who has no expectations for WoW isn't gonna be rushing to clear Sunwell I think.
→ More replies (1)2
u/choatec 18d ago
They both have their issue. Osrs also has item power creep with every new raid as well. Idk how WoW is for botting but osrs is a joke and contributes to your item value turning to nothing. When you have bots so sophisticated they can run raids there’s an issue.
→ More replies (4)5
u/zigzagofdoom 18d ago
Prime Blizzard would 100% be able to address its current issues. They were all extremely passionate about the game that they were developing. It's the same reason why OSRS is still in a good spot. Jagex for the most part is really passionate about their game. I would not say the same about current Blizzard.

24
u/monkeysCAN 18d ago

u/plok742 Historical Reflections 18d ago
almost every design decision in retail wow, from seasonality, lockouts, housing, endgame focus, etc. is intended to further the goal of monetization. It's like a runescape 3 player saying "treasure hunter was just a different type of game design". It has essentially 0 artistic merit. Classic wow, a game with genuine artistic merit, makes that painfully obvious
15
u/Yoshbyte Chompy Bird Hunter (7341 to count) 18d ago
Okay, 10 years + in both. The single largest flaw is it is a theme park. It requires removing progression from the player and devs constantly adding more. The entire system is hostile to permanent players and hostile to anyone with any fluctuations on their life situation ever. Their content at endgame beint large group is a blessing and a curse bur without alternerive is a curse. But their systems are designed such that it isn’t fixable because it would deplete the game of players and empty the world if they did
6
u/Temil 18d ago
The single largest flaw is it is a theme park. It requires removing progression from the player and devs constantly adding more.
That's not a flaw, that's a design difference.
Games that are designed to be seasonal are actively designed in a way where you play them for a month or two, and then come back when you want that progression experience again.
The progression going away is the point, if it didn't go away there would be no content for these games because of the pace they chose for progression.
→ More replies (4)6
u/SwimmerQuick1500 18d ago

u/Honolulu-Blues 18d ago
I've been playing both RuneScape and WoW since I was a kid as well. I think around 2006ish.
But yes, I agree that the theme park nature is a huge issue in WoW. But the issue I see is with the world itself and not the gear. They have added new zones for years that are dead content by the next expansion. The gear seasonal gear choice is one that many of the biggest games in the world use.
It's not hostile at all, it's just a different type of game. It's not like in RuneScape where you may be stuck in the red prison for 1000 hours.
"hostile to anyone with any fluctuations on their life situation ever"
How? You just login and play the game lol.
"their content at endgame beint large group is a blessing and a curse bur without alternerive is a curse."
There is an alternative. Play the higher level delves or M+.

Very shallow number go up progression during leveling. There are only like 4 quests with different flavor texts attached to them the same goes for mobs. Vertical progression structure for endgame is horrible for health of the game long term. I could probably go on if I really sat down but WoW hasn't been exactly taking up a lot of headspace recently
24
u/Serentity 18d ago
“Vertical progression structure for endgame is horrible for the health of the game long term” is just a baffling take, to be honest, about the game that is constantly shown to be unkillable?
If you like horizontal progression, that’s great! It’s awesome that you have an MMO option for you. Vertical progression is still fun for a lot of people, and WOW does that better than any other MMO.
Turns out, different games actually can fill different niches in the same genre!

Aside from Classic, gear in WoW is relevant for 1 patch.
15
u/Drgn-OSRS 18d ago
The only reason this isn't true in Classic is because it doesn't receive any new patches. Vanilla BIS is significantly stronger than what was in the game at launch.
WoW is and always has been a seasonal game, like EverQuest was. RuneScape took more after Ultima Online, they're two fundamentally opposed styles of MMOs.
5
u/SSFunbun 18d ago
I hope one day people can understand comparing theme parks to sandbox mmos just doesn't really work. they're different kinds of games that appeal to different kinds of players.
5
u/dreadwraith8d 2277 18d ago
Gear is a means to an end to nerf encounters over time in WoW and it doesn't take hundreds of hours to obtain.
6
u/i_like_fish_decks 18d ago
The difference is that gear is not the content in WoW, the season is. Completing the newest raid is the content. Grinding M+ score is the content. Grinding PvP rating of your choice is the content. Gear is just the byproduct.
Loot/gearing itself has not been the "content" in a decade.

Paid character level boosts, skipping effectively what half the game is
Everyone on the same ugly cash shop mount
Pumping out the exact same expansions time and time again with no effort to change things, just to milk the cash cow dry
Banning in-game boosting (with in-game gold) to push people to the cash shop buyable levels more.
In an attempt to stop people boosting (and therefor bypassing their cash shop), heavily nerfing the ability to run dungeons at a later level, in turn, ruining gold making methods and any ability to catch a friend up to your level to do content together
I could probably keep going if I kept thinking
EDIT: Getting a lot of replies, let me clarify here, I'm comparing WoW Classic and OSRS
And chill out WoW fanboys, I still love the game and the memories I have of it, I just think current Blizzard is a shell of its former self and don't do nearly half the defending of the IP that the OSRS team do when it comes to pushing back against the venture capitalists. I'm genuinely hopeful for Classic+, but I'm also being cautiously optimistic, given Blizzards recent track record

"Paid character level boosts, skipping effectively what half the game is"
This is just you fundamentally misunderstanding what WoW is tbh.
"Everyone on the same ugly cash shop mount"
Again, you clearly don't play the game lol because most peoples go to mounts are not the cash shop mounts.
"Pumping out the exact same expansions time and time again with no effort to change things, just to milk the cash cow dry"
?
"Banning in-game boosting (with in-game gold) to push people to the cash shop buyable levels more."
What are you even saying? Boosting is absolutely not bannable if you use in game gold and Blizzard has openly said this many times. But boosting literally nobody boosts for levels, or buys the level boosts unless it's on sale or they don't care about the money lol. It does not take long to catch a character up to current content.
"In an attempt to stop people boosting (and therefor bypassing their cash shop), heavily nerfing the ability to run dungeons at a later level, in turn, ruining gold making methods and any ability to catch a friend up to your level to do content together"

I play both games so its worth mentioning that rs3 also allows you to pay for level boosts effectively skipping half the game (i know this is 2007scape). Rs3 also has ugly cosmetics that everyone uses. Each expansion is wildly different from each other. Boosting in game using gold isnt against the rules only boosting in game using rwt is banable same as runescape. Wow has "level syncing" so you can in fact run with your friends at wildly different levels.
Wow has a lot of issues and is a skeleton of its former self but the issues you've listed are inaccurate or similar issues to rs3. (Again ik rs3 bad osrs good). I think its better to focus on the actual issues Wow has or the things osrs excels in rather than making them up or spreading misinformation.

Paid character level boosts, skipping effectively what half the game is
Leveling is less than 5% of the game, I'd honestly say it's less than 1%. WoW has always been a game that primarily takes place at max level and leveling basically just exists as a way to learn your class and explore the world for a bit. They added boosts because people got bored leveling alts.
Everyone on the same ugly cash shop mount
This is only true for like one day when a new mount comes out. Then everyone goes back to their old favorite mounts. There's like 1000 mounts in the game, I can assure you that if you just run around a main city you'll see people on dozens of different mounts every day.
Banning in-game boosting (with in-game gold) to push people to the cash shop buyable levels more.
They banned in game boosting because it was used for real world trading 100% of the time. Same reason OSRS banned duel arena. You can't have something in your game that exists purely for the benefit of RWT, that's not healthy for the game at all.
Sounds like all of your complaints have to do with the shop despite the fact that the shop really isn't a problem with the game at all. Having played the game for 20 years I can safely say I've never interacted with the shop once, I've never even thought about the shop.

Levelling isn't half the game in current WoW, not even close. I have a half-dozen characters at max level with under 10 hours played on them. Never bought a boost, levelling is just so fast these days that it's really just a tutorial for your class instead of half the game.

Is FF bigger outside of the states? Despite OSRS being smaller, I've known and met other people who played it since I was in middle school while I've never met anyone who plays FF.
8
u/hii488 18d ago
Assuming you're the median age of an osrs player, meeting anyone who played FF14 in middle school would have been a bit of a challenge...
But yeah, FF has the JPN (and broader SEA/kr/china) market, but it's still pretty popular in NA - it's just got a fairly different demographic.
Current osrs players will mostly be focused on osrs, but ff14 draws in a lot of casual players who sub for the story, and then unsub to go do other stuff once they've played through it.

Yeah, it would make sense to keep it on the DL and work on it quietly while slowly working towards that goal - think of how many people would have a sub to Runescape that never did before because they weren't into the point and click style.
That's a lot of subscribers on the table that... at this point are virtually untapped as there is not a single decent Action Combat MMO out - and the only ones in the view are GW3 and Riot's MMO and we still have no idea what those two will look like.
I'd bet a lot of money that Runescape Dragonwilds will become an MMO in the future.

Yes and no. They’ve teased that they’ve got something bigger planned for Classic earlier this year but nobody knows what it could actually be. Most likely gonna find out next month at BlizzCon.

7
u/Rucati 18d ago
The current codename for classic+ is Camelot if you'd like to do more research on it. There's a lot of evidence pointing towards it being real, with an announcement at Blizzcon and a release date shortly thereafter.
That being said it is based on leaks. There's court documents for trademarks and licenses for heroic and epic versions just like they do for their retail expansions. There was also a leaked doc that included Camelot as a Q3 2026 release.
Again though, it's all speculation and leaks. Anything can happen, it could be a mobile game or something. The leaks could just be completely wrong, or it could have gotten scrapped altogether. Only thing we know for sure is if it's real it'll be announced at Blizzcon, so we'll find out for sure then.
6
u/poopoopooyttgv 18d ago
They also invited a bunch of streamers to test something and made them all sign ndas. A lot of those streamers have suspiciously empty streaming schedules around blizzcon, which implies they know something will be released and they are planning to stream it
2

At this point, even if it wasn’t in development they’d be stupid not to look into it with how much hope the playbase has thrown into it

It’s not really a competition…
Very different games. Yes, both mmo’s, but way differ play styles.
If anything, I see a world in which a lot of overlap occurs in terms of player pop.

Aren't most of the WoW streamers who came over, quit for the TBC rereRelease already onto other games? pretty sure i see Pika & Xar on LoL of all things.

u/Megacarry 18d ago
No big wow streamer stayed, but a few smaller ones are still playing. Sardaco was a small streamer in wow, but is quite successful in OSRS

u/SheepherderBorn7326 18d ago
To be fair everyone except Xaryu & Soda were small time in wow, Guzu was the only other decently big name and he caters to the most turbo casual wow players

u/PPLifter 18d ago
Yeah wow is a seasonal game now
9
u/Temil 18d ago
It's been a seasonal game for almost 20 years. Wrath of the Lich King had the seasonal model where you didn't have to do previous raids to get to the current one.

Yes but the reason they put time into osrs was because the fact their progress is never deleted any of them can come back.
They are streamers they saw a drop in viewership and thus income and moved on to another game

u/Money_Echidna2605 18d ago
they put time into osrs cause they got way more viewers lets be honest, dudes all left when the views slowed down except sardacho cause no one in wow like the dude.

you guys learned nothing from the WoW exodus last year. Players won't leave WoW en masse for OSRS because it doesn't have the same gameplay ethos they like, and despite Reddit & YouTubers who want to make Blizzard feel bad thinking otherwise, monetization is not a large enough hurdle for most to make them quit. Most gamers don't care.
You guys are setting yourselves up for disappointment here. OSRS and RS3 have a lane that they are very good at, and I think both will grow over the next few years. But we're not going to see 7 million OSRS players as we see with WoW.

You may be right but just pointing out that the "7 million" number was extrapolated through many layers of guesswork and assumptions. It was never a verifiable fact.

The only true WoW killer is, ironically, WoW.
OSRS may well outlive it.

I don't think OSRS or WoW will ever "die". Much like the OSRS population with leagues, the same half a million people come back every iteration of fresh. That number will get smaller each time but it's always going to be at a playable amount. Perpetual money machine.

They're 2 very different styles of mmos. I play both and enjoy them both for different reasons.

I don't think Blizzard is in touch enough with their base to pull off Classic+ as a long-term success

u/Maylor90 18d ago
Oh oh scary, shiver me timbers...
Played both games on and off for a long time, you can't really compare them, they're each their own thing. Maybe if Runescape allows 50 characters per subscription it'll be more of a threat in my eyes. RuneScape has straight up copied features from wow for 15+ years, most noteably the infamous evolution of combat. The term "wow killer" has been floated for over a decade, time and time again it's ended up being a curse.

u/Snufolupogus 2376 18d ago
1 character without restrictions is the same as 50 characters with limitations btw.
The whole, pay for multiple characters in OSRS for different modes is fine, but people are going to want to play those modes at the same time as the people currently doing that are typically multilogging. It wouldn't really solve anything.

I think what people just don't account for is that. Games with built in different game modes that vary gameplay wildly usually have multiple characters per paid account. 1 osrs account can do literally everything in the game. There isn't 1 thing any osrs player can do that any other one can't. Gets tricky when you talk about the different irons, though. Not being able to have at least 1 game mode type per account kinda sucks

Hey if it forces Blizzard to make quality content, Im here for this misinformation.

u/UnidenifiedRarFossil 18d ago
That’s it. Competition makes everything great for everyone. The better OSRS does makes Blizzard pay attention. They do something then OSRS pays attention. And we the players do something fine dining

u/randominternetfren 18d ago
Ive always played both games, im thrilled OSRS is doing so well. Recently Blizzard survey had OSRS at the top of "what other games do you play" list.
For me WoW and OSRS scratch different MMO itches. If they can compete with each other to make both games better im 100% here for it.

u/UnidenifiedRarFossil 18d ago
Exactly. Played both and have had a lot of fun. But I’ve been loving the RuneScape direction and community

Sadly I still live in the world of osrs simply being too expensive right now, especially since I also want to try bronzeman
3
u/UnidenifiedRarFossil 18d ago
I agree. I’ve heard the talking points from both sides but I want to play the different game modes without paying a lot.

u/Soggyhashbrowns 17d ago
Will wow die on its own? Maybe, but it won’t be because Osrs killed it. They are very different games, that attract very different players. They are so different I’ve never understood why people compare them. However the two big differences is 1)Osrs is much more new player friendly (both new player, and returning player who hasn’t played in 5+years) and 2) One thing Osrs is good for is players who like to play for a while, take a short break and come back to it. Makes it much easier for casual players. If you do that in WoW you get left behind and have to play catch up on current content.

I believe too. Fucking 20+ years man. I've been here since the start (almost).
I used to play WoW back long time ago, but Blizzards greed and toxic policy combined with awful strategies which prioritize money over players have destroyed the company. That greed has seeped into their products and games, they are rotten inside out from the roots to the top. When I saw what Blizzard has started doing to their games and what the company has become. I quit playing their games, I stopped supporting the company.
I left when Mist of Pandaria released. I was very tired of Blizzards shit. But I kept playing Oldschool Runescape and Runescape 3. And I was supporting Jagex since day one. Seeing the company grow, their games become better and better. Telling people all the time that Runescape is superior to World of Warcraft. No one believed me, no one listened. But I kept supporting Jagex and I kept playing OSRS.
Now, 20 years later I can finally say I've made my choice, and it was correct. I am glad I supported Jagex all these years and I am happy to continue doing so. Today, I can point fingers at Oldschool Runescape and say, I was right.
If things continue like they do, Jagex will have the Nr. #1 largest MMORPG in the world. Which I've dreamed of happening for a long while, not because I want it, but because Jagex deserves it.
For creating amazing games, and for being the yang to the yin to companies like Blizzard. Thank you Jagex.
Anyways onto more hunter rumors. Thanks for reading my rant.

As someone who played wow from launch, OSRS has a bright future, wow does not. Even classic is limited, because the only content that is good was made way back in the day, and I have no faith the new Blizzard and dev team have the talent to make appealing new content that matches the feel of the old for classic+. Don’t even ask me about retail. I’d rather not play than play that slop. I hope I’m wrong but Blizzard has a tendency of proving me right.

u/Amazing_Hall_4948 17d ago
I feel the same, after 25k hours of wow I realised I was just playing reskins of the same content over and over. RS was my OG mmo and I've been on and off it but been playing it hard for the last 8 months.
I had a lot of fun playing classic only because I never got to experience the first 3 in full, I hope classic + explores different content, solo dungeons/bossing would be nice
