IRL they started with HOAs and gated communities

They say its just for "security purposes" monitoring everyone coming and going through Shantay Pass, but I think they just don't trust those Sophanemians.

Yet there aren't any around the castle. Weird how that works.

and it’s some bullshit that South varrock is riddled with them yet there’s none on the north side. Classism at its finest

21

It's totally bullshit. The white knights say that it's to "protect against a dark knight invasion" but I don't see any flock cameras around the dark knight stronghold!

2

There's a few pointing directly into the slums of Meiyerditch.

That's shocking, thought only white knights were there?

7

u/Longjumping-Hour-292 9d ago

We need Varrock guards to begin stopping players before they enter Varrock and seizing their weapons.
“Do you need a bracelet of slaughter?”
“You cant slaughter people in self defence”
“You dont need access to weapons of war like
Ice barrage, only the military should have such things “

This will significantly reduce spell crime in Varrock and make everone safer

8

u/CarbonElysium 9d ago

Taking away the rights of the average citizen but you don’t mention any strategy to deal with the dark wizards…. You need to focus on the real safety issues here.

-1

7

u/Aaguns 10d ago

Nobody really likes them except law enforcement, it’s one of the few issues both sides of the aisle agree about. The problem is that they’re very oftrn funded and approved without the normal voting process, so nobody has a chance to speak up against them before they’re already installed.

u/RoughDraftRs 10d ago

I know quite a few people who figuratively wave the don't tread on me flag, and they are all anti-flock. I don't know what the online discourse looks like right now but it seems like this could be an issue "both sides" could find some common ground on.

2

u/MrStealYoBeef QA Team 9d ago

I genuinely would love for both sides to properly come together to accomplish something for once, our lack of any form of unity is a big reason we're in this situation right now. That's literally the biggest thing I want out of a leader at this point, a will to bring people together instead of shit talking the opposition.

1

u/RoughDraftRs 9d ago

Yeah it seems the playbook is just divide, if only we could find some common ground and stopmfighting eachother on every issue.

1

u/MarketingSpecial6604 10d ago

Yup my father has it tattooed on him but happily voted for the one responsible for ushering us in to the police state. "Cheaper taxes" was his reasoning.... Yet during the Obama years he bought into the FEMA death camp conspiracy theories, but now with actual camps being built and warehouses being converted into holding facilities nothing is wrong at all!

1

u/FreeSquirkJuice 9d ago

Nah, anybody supporting it online is Fed affiliated. I live in an extremely rural area, majority red and both red team and blue team equally hate flock out here. I meet very few people IRL who are okay with it, regardless of political affiliation. I work directly with the public on a daily basis in different cities in my state.

15

u/DevoidHT 2376 10d ago

The US kind of stopped trying to pretend. End stage capitalism was always going to be our undoing but now they aren’t hiding it anymore. Capital generating more capital while work goes unpaid.

1

u/klarge24 10d ago

Yeah I'm not certain of a great future for this country/world. There is a great cosmic war between the forces of good and evil and human suffering will be immense. Learn about the creation of the federal reserve on jekyll island in 1913. 9/11 was sketchy af at best. Big kickstarter to the surveillance state. All cellphone calls are definitely on record somewhere at the NSA. Good luck if you're doing anything illegal now with flock cameras. It's sick the only decent future I see right now for myself is becoming an electrician and wiring up data centers that might end up leading to a lot of problems on top of the problems they're already causing.

23

u/Buzzd-Lightyear 10d ago

I mean, doesn’t the UK have a fuckload of CCTV everywhere?

94

u/ricksansmorty 10d ago

CCTV just records everything and deletes it after a certain time period to record new footage.

Flock camera's are hooked up to detect cars and people and then send it to a database to record wherever you went, so they know where you were. They don't even need a warrant for this either, and also it's not just cops that can access it, people at flock can see it too, and no law is stopping them from selling data about your every move to others.

22

u/Buzzd-Lightyear 10d ago

Ah gotcha. I thought CCTV was a wider surveillance system than that. Yeah flock is fucking insane and they’re wasting no time in abusing the lack of regulation around them. Fun times we live in..

23

u/Kodai_Dreaming 10d ago

u/wcooper97 2141/2277 10d ago

19

u/Roxinos 10d ago

I thought CCTV was a wider surveillance system than that.

Just in case you didn't know, CCTV just means "closed-circuit television." We have them in the US, too. Any time you go to a supermarket or corner shop and see a camera, that's CCTV. Some countries just have a wider general acceptance of them so you get them in more places and police can access them. But it's not like Flock where it's privately-owned by technofascists.

2

u/Buzzd-Lightyear 10d ago

Yeah I’m a dumbass

23

u/Roxinos 10d ago

Nah, dude. Not knowing something doesn't make you a dumbass. obligatory xkcd

4

u/iskela45 BTW 10d ago

Also apparently American cops are already abusing flock to stalk their exes, and some higher up at Flock spent a lot of time watching cameras covering a young girls' gymnasium session and a pool.

8

u/SureIntention8402 10d ago

CCTV is just another word for surveillance camera.

3

u/Pryserk 10d ago

We do have ANPR which does a similar thing to the Flock cameras. Difference being the Flock cameras are a private for profit entity

Handful of years ago ring cameras became all the rage and everybody has one and the police historically won’t use your footage to do simple things like convict people stealing from your front door.

Everybody signed up for surveillance and they are literally everywhere.

Think the fuckin surveillance system what’s his face from the dark knight makes to track the joker.

Flock cameras were a very easy goalpost to move when you already have people opting in to mass surveillance under the guise of protecting their home.

But I’m a nut job for talking like this so don’t mind me

“I don’t know about this thing therefore nobody else does either!!”

1

u/Thundrboltr 8d ago

Is this an United States thing?

1

u/xanniballl 8d ago

Yeah. They’re these license plate readers (cameras) installed in many cities that automatically log every car that passes them; make, model, color, plate number, time, direction, etc.

Not just specific people, or targeted investigations, but everyone who passes through. Then they supposedly use that data retroactively for criminal investigations.

It’s unconstitutional, passive mass surveillance.

1

u/Thundrboltr 8d ago

When will people in the US wake up. What a shithole country it's become under the current administration

1

u/xanniballl 7d ago edited 7d ago

While you’re right about this administration, this kind of mass surveillance of citizens has been going on here since September 11th, over 25 years ago.

Also the US is hardly the only country that does it. The UK has done similar mass surveillance for years. Not that it makes it okay or anything.

1

u/MrStealYoBeef QA Team 9d ago

For now

1

u/MaxRager 9d ago

true, i cant tell what my future holds. maybe someone murders someone close to me and i seek street justice. but currently i cannot see myself turning to a life of crime.

1

u/MrStealYoBeef QA Team 9d ago

You seem to misunderstand. You think you're a law abiding citizen. The entire problem with a surveillance state that tracks your every move is that it doesn't matter if you think you're law abiding, all it takes is a minor slip up and there's evidence to get you in trouble regardless of your actual behavior. You don't have the tracking data, they do, and they can take only the parts of it that make their case against you while you have nothing to defend yourself.

And all it takes to convict you of anything is for someone who has that kind of power to decide that they don't want you in society anymore for whatever reason. It doesn't matter if it's morally right or wrong, it doesn't matter if the full evidence would even prove your innocence. The law isn't there to protect you in a surveillance state, it's there to control. You think you have nothing to hide until you do, and then it's too late. You think you've done nothing wrong until the powers that be say you have.

1

u/MaxRager 8d ago

I’m not a conspiratorial person. I don’t just jump to the evil and what could happen. I tend to focus on the actual objective of said thing. Bad people can abuse anything good, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be allowed.

1

u/MrStealYoBeef QA Team 8d ago

Well it's a good thing that examples already exist and have been given in the comments on this post. No need to be conspiratorial about it.

1

u/MaxRager 7d ago

So because something can be abused it should be banned? Why don’t we ban airplanes? Automobiles? Public schools? Police officers? Doctors? I mean I can keep listing things that evil people can abuse power.

1

u/MrStealYoBeef QA Team 7d ago

... Yes?

When something is actively detrimental to society as a whole, it's in our best interest to get rid of it. Active constant surveillance everywhere all the time, and that data being used to profile and control, is the issue. It was not exactly an issue when it was just private businesses and homeowners choosing to hand over recorded video after a valid warrant to obtain that data was provided. One has respect for privacy, the other has none. Authorities need to have a valid reason ahead of time to invade privacy, that's the entire point of obtaining a search warrant.

Also, the examples you gave are actively benefiting society. I'd argue that some of them haven't been invested in enough though, especially public schools.

1

u/MaxRager 7d ago

And flock cameras are actively benefiting society. So according to your own logic, flock cameras are good.

1

u/Magxvalei 8d ago

It's not conspiratorial when surveillance state behavior is already happening. It's kinda been happening since 9/11, but recently it's being more mask off.

Bad people can abuse anything good, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be allowed

If those bad people are in positions of power and authority and there are no effective means of holding them accountable for abusing them, then absolutely those so-called "good things" aren't actually good and shouldn't be allowed.

And, as the saying goes, "he who is willing to sacrifice liberty for security deserves neither"

1

u/MaxRager 7d ago

So you’re telling me you don’t have any smart devices in your house or daily in your pocket? Or is that abused surveillance allowed in your logic?

1

u/Magxvalei 7d ago

Nobody likes or wants that Big Tech is gathering all sorts of information through their phone/internet.

But that kinda of indirect surveillance is not at all the same as the direct surveillance of technology like Ring doorbell cameras and Flock cameras.

It's certainly easier to manage your digital footprint.

1

u/MaxRager 7d ago

That’s where you’re mistaken. You can get basic phones that don’t directly surveil your every move and conversations. You just decided in your mind that this evil is good for you.

0

u/Magxvalei 9d ago edited 9d ago

Well, I meant you're a "law abiding citizen" until the government decides you're not, such as because you have beliefs that don't align with the regime, or vote a certain way. Or you're simply deemed an undesirable.

Or, more realistically and commonly, you get mistaken for a crime you didn't commit because the camera tracked the wrong liscence plate. Actually happened to this one woman recently.
