I'm curious what everyone else thinks about Sailing, because so far I'm really struggling to get enthusiastic about the skill.
I'm not saying the skill is objectively bad. There are definitely parts I enjoy, but overall I keep asking myself what I'm missing because a lot of the activities just don't feel very meaningful or satisfying to me.
Port tasks
These feel like Agility with a boat to me. I'm moving around, clicking things, completing the task, and then doing it again. Maybe I'm missing something about the progression here, but it doesn't really feel rewarding or meaningful to me.
Monster tasks
I actually really like the idea of these. The way they're set up feels good, and this is probably the activity I've enjoyed the most.
My biggest issue is the boat movement. It feels really clunky and unnatural to me.
For example, if I have an NPC like "Jobless Jim" (the one steering the boat) and I'm controlling the cannon, why does attacking a monster not also adjust the boat's orientation? I still have to manually rotate the boat myself.
It makes me wonder: what is the point of having an NPC steering the boat if I'm still effectively doing all of the steering myself?
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the mechanics here, but this is one of the things that makes the combat feel more awkward than it needs to be.
Barracuda Trails
These are fun.
For about one or two rounds.
After that, I find them pretty tedious. I can see why people enjoy them, but personally I don't find the gameplay loop engaging enough to keep doing for long periods.
Salvaging
This is actually my go-to method at the moment.
I basically dump the boat, click around, and go semi-AFK. And honestly, I think this is probably the activity that best does what it's designed to do. It's simple, relaxing, and I don't feel like I'm fighting the controls.
Boat upgrades
This is probably my favourite part of the skill.
I really like slowly upgrading the boat and seeing it become better over time. The progression itself feels satisfying, and I especially like that I'm doing this as an Ironman.
Maybe I'll regret saying that later when I'm further into the grind, but right now I really like the idea of having to actually work towards the materials and upgrades myself.
So overall, I feel like there are some genuinely good ideas here, but I just can't seem to get excited about the actual Sailing gameplay.
Maybe I'm missing something that becomes more interesting later on, or maybe I'm approaching the skill the wrong way.
What do you guys think?
What parts of Sailing do you really enjoy?
Is there a piece of content I haven't reached yet that completely changes how the skill feels?
And for those of you who really like Sailing, what is it about the skill that makes it enjoyable for you?
I'd genuinely like to understand what I'm missing rather than just writing the skill off.
