3DO Homebrew Programmers

For any of the 3DO programmers that are on this subreddit, can you give some insight on your experince writing code for the 3DO? What was it like starting, how many projects have you worked on, etc... I'm posting this topic because of the misconception that 3do is undocumented, too difficult to write a program/game for, or that no one is experienced enough to reference for technical support. Thanks in advanced.

Isn’t she beautiful? Anyway, I love my 3DO. She’s so clean and came in box which is pristine too with all insets, etc. And 3 controllers!

It came with everything shown on the box, and inserts, etc. The console itself was actually in the original plastic wrapping packaging but packed back up really well after testing/ playing. unlike my Jaguar box which is beat to hell and doesn’t have the cardboard tray insert) I’m not great at determining g things like this but I would say that it’s mint or at least near mint (not sure what exactly the qualifiers for that are with retro cd based consoles)

The only thing missing was the (not for resale version of) Gex -I think they just included the jewel case with disc, no long box; maybe a long manual somewhere in the box as well, I’d guess, but no Long Box with a pack-in game like that, unfortunately) However, I was able to snag a NFRS copy of Gex for under $40 on eBay, so overall I’m pretty satisfied, but it wasn’t cheap!

Also, 2 of the 3 controllers it came with are this really cool Jet-Black Logitech controllers I’d never seen before but I think aesthetically, they look the best of any pads I’ve seen for the 3DO (of ALL -first and third party controllers I’ve seen for the 3DO). It also included the original JP2X (Panasonic FZ-10 controller) of course. I actually prefer to use the Panasonic controller over the Logitech ones. Just feels better in my hands, but the Logitech controllers look better on display, IMO!

Just need to put my Jaguar next to her instead of the SNES (in the photos) or put a Sega Tower of Power (Gen 2- once I finally track down a working 32X!). If you guys could recommend any new(ish) 3DO homebrews that are actually worth getting, that would be awesome, bc I don’t have an EverDrive type device for my FZ-10, but I have an EverDrive for my SNES, Kai Cart for my Saturn and a GameDrive for my Jaguar (the only option available… and the price reflects it! However, it’s a cool little device, I love mine; I KNOW I wouldn’t play my Jag anywhere nearly as much (or, at all tbh) if I didn’t have one of those. My physical Jag collection isn’t big, but neither is the Jag library, or the 3DO library, for that matter.

I have about 25 or so 3DO games and like 6 or 7 demo discs so I’ve tried a good portion of the 3DO library at this point. None of them are from beyond 1996 and I’d like to try some newer ones!)

Side note: On one of my demo CDs, it says something like “multiple playable demos” and WaterWorld is on the list, so I thought I was gonna be able to play a long-lost cancelled game, but nah, it’s just a clip /preview and doesn’t show much as far as gameplay, just looks like shots from the film mostly and some 3D graphics that were probably part of a cut-scene bc they looked beyond 32 bit abilities; it was either that or another clip from the movie, I can’t recall lol)

FZ-1 3DO with Disc Drive - is my only option the external memory unit?

I sent this broken 3do from japan to be fixed, in which the issue was just that one of the cogs had cracked so the disc drive couldn't operate properly. The disc drive works great, and I do not use the system too often.

The person who fixed my console also replaced the internal battery. This was a few years ago, and I am aware that this will die out one day.

I am not going replace the disc drive, so is my only other option the memory unit? Is there not a usb mod for saves or an fram mod? I cannot solder and rely on someone else doing this stuff.

Also, what is the easiest way to access the memory manager?

Thank you!

ODE cable for 3DO

have a FZ-1 Panasonic player.

I bought an ODE from Crown Arcade. I checked with Stone Age Gamer and they told me that Fixel has disappeared from the 3DO scene.

Would adding a USB extension to the board and run it out the back or front of the console work so that you don't have to take the console apart to add games to the usb stick?

Something's Up M2's Sleeve (Ultra Game Players #99, July 1997)

Now we know exactly what games Capcom, Konami and Warp were making for the M2, but what games do you think the other studios could've been making? Could have some of these games been ported to other consoles after the M2 went belly up?

Did you know Genki was making a rail shooter for the M2?

In late 1995, Genki showed off pre-rendered footage of what could be possible on M2. These were all shown off in the 1996 issues of Japan's 3DO Magazine. Edge and Next Generation would report in early 1997 that there were rumours of Genki making a game akin to Panzer Dragoon.

When the M2 was being shown off at various tech expos in late 1997, one of the games on display was a scrolling shooter called "Memory Breaker", along with a port of Sega's Digital Dance Mix and the dolphin demo. This was around when they were marketing it as a professional machine and Panasonic were clear at the event these wouldn't officially release, rather they were just there to show off the tech.

I hope someday the Memory Breaker demo gets found, or at least footage of it in action.

The 3DO Decomp Project

Thumbnail patreon.com
41 Upvotes

I've kicked of a project to decomp and release any and all 3DO retail releases. All code generated will be buildable for and run on the original hardware. It will all be released under the GPL license allowing for people to port to other platforms. You can read more about the project from the Patreon post.

You can watch the work (a bulk of the initial work is automated using custom tooling I've built + clankers) at https://twitch.com/3dodev I'll also stream the manual work necessary to complete each title once it gets to that point.

Those who support the project financially will get a say in the direction via voting on what should be worked on. To start however I chose Need For Speed.

I used Road Rash, PDWT, and Return Fire as test beds for my tooling which you can see over on YouTube: https://youtu.be/U4gIbjwjQW8 I'll be releasing those once I'm finished polishing them off.

Crown arcade ode booting problems

I recapped my entire 3do, no trace rot or anything. When I boot up my 3do it doesn't always turn on and the green light flashes on and off. I have to cycle the power multiple times in order for it to show video and boot up the menu. I've tried multiple usb sticks/sd cards and it has the same exact problem. What's weird is that with the cd rom drive connected the unit works flawlessly. I'm at a loss. Reflashed the firmware and everything.

FZ-1 Black screen issue

Ive just picked up a faulty (i knew it was when i bought it) FZ-1 and im trying to figure out why this one stopped and if someone has experienced the same or similar.

It has a black screen when switched on, and after about 30 seconds the 3do splash screen comes up for about a second before going black again. The unit has previously been recapped with quality caps (previous owner had this done). The laser diode does output but the disc doesn't spin. Ive since replaced with an ODE, but this still hasn't changed anything.

After a bit of research, it seems that this issue is something to do with the disc drive not being recognised by the system. My issue is I dont know where to start looking to find out why.

Edit: The unit was working after the recap, it had only recently stopped working.

RGB Mod

I know this is a recurring question but is there any way to get an RGB mod board in 2026? I'm willing to pay a pretty high price for it honestly... 3DO is new to me and my last retro console to not use SCART in my SVS.

Anybody got any extras, leads on one, or advice?

Japanese FZ-1 overheating saga

The full story is in oldest to newest chronological order below, but the tldr is that my Japanese 3DO has issues after 15 minutes or so regardless of the game (I initially thought it was limited to Road Rash, but that isn't the case). I replaced the 2 common problem caps (C35 & C36), I removed the factory power supply and did a USB-C swap, and I installed a 20V fan in the factory location (Japanese units didn't come with fans). I've even tried removing RF shielding and running with the top removed, but nothing seemed to help.

Then, for fun, I pointed a pedestal fan right at it with the top removed, and wouldn't you know it I can play for hours on end now. I let it overheat again, and used my laser temp gun to read temps of every component on the main board and everything I could get line of sight to in the CD drive, but the hottest thing I found was only 120* F.

At this point I'm at a loss. Is it worth it to try replacing the rest of the caps? Find a replacement disc drive?

Looking for a recommendation for ODE for the 3DO. I have a FZ-1

Got me a 3DO for $6…kinda.

Post image

A couple days back, I bought a pack of Pokémon cards for $6 at Target and ended up finding a card worth $300.

Since I was already saving up for one of these beasts (hyperfixations are fun), I sold off the card and bought an FZ-1 and Gex at my local game store, making up the small difference with my own money.

They also had a North American FZ-10 for $175. Did I make the right choice?

Regardless, I’m happy to have joined the community and look forward to my future 3DO-based ventures!
