Help!
Hello Everyone! I am a new owner of a 2002 Boxster Base. It was my uncles who owned it for 13 years but barely ever drove it.
After I bought it I sent it to a local shop to get the IMS bearing upgraded. After picking the car up I drove it home where it immediately started dumping oil. I had it towed back to the shop where they are now saying there’s a little aluminum piece inside the oil pump connecting to 2 O-rings that sheared off and caused the leak. According to the shop, they called LN engineering and they stated that sometimes that just happens. Now the shop is quoting me thousands of more dollars to repair it. This whole situation seems a little fishy to me, can anyone advise me what this part that broke could be caused by or anybody who’s experienced this before?

Welcome to porsche ownership!.
Its a 23y old car sat in a garage with old rubber and plastic everywhere that will break once you start using it.
I’d be prepared for more repairs within the next 12 months if you start driving it more, like AOS, coolant tank, suspension (bump stops etc will be rotten and falling apart once used), oil filler tube leak etc..
Thousands of dollars does also not sound strange, most shop repairs will fall in this range unfortunately. Thats the porsche tax, and but shops have labour rate making you think that Ferdinand Porsche will raise from the dead to repair your car personally. So check with your porsche club and get a second opinion.
And what kind of shop is it? Porsche centre or independent specialist , or local wrencher?
I did a quick check and here in sweden (costs and rates are ofcourse different) replacing an oil pump could easily cost 3-4kUSD at a specialists, and between 5-7kUSD at a porsche centre.
I’d the shop for:
And itemized quote incl labour.
A photo of the broken aluminum part
If they are just replacing the oil pump or need to do additional repairs, and if there is any “while you’re in there stuff”
A photo showing exactly where it came from
Whether they found any aluminum debris in the oil/filter
Take that then and contact LN yourself to see if its the shops fault, or of it is unrelated to the IMS repair.
Also you can see if your local porsche club can recommend a good honest workshop for the repair and a second opinion.

Where are you based? In most countries the garage would be on the hook for the repair as they were supposed to do it right the first time, unless you supplied the part that failed yourself.

Based in CA; shop is saying it’s unrelated to the work they did and it “just happens sometimes”

I would still consider asking for legal advice. A friend of mine was in a similar situation (broken turbo replaced with faulty part) in my country of the Netherlands and it was determined that the quote for the work was a valid contract, and therefore the work should be fully completed as expected for the agreed upon price.

The part that is broken is the metal coolant housing which sits on the front of the engine, it has a chamfered nose which holds the end of the intermediate shaft in place.
The oil pump sits inside the housing and with an 8mm hex pin it drives the pump off the int shaft.
When you fit the new bearing it involves hitting it into place with a dead blow hammer and as such you are transferring that force through the intermediate shaft and into the housing.
The new bearing goes in really easily with a few good taps but if you get it off square then I guess you could end up hitting it way harder than needed.
The housing I think is cast and it can be brittle, never broken one fitting a bearing but have had one break remove by it as the two seals can make it really tight if it’s never been out before or if excess sealer has been used at any point.
If it were in a weakened state then fitting a new bearing may be enough to break it and it’s probably going to be difficult to prove it either way.
