Data Center Posts

Data centers have become a fairly important topic to a lot of Abilene residents over the last couple of years. As moderators of the r/Abilene community we want to make sure the sub facilitates civil discussions allowing both sides of the issue to be heard.

Unfortunately we've received several complaints about repeated posts on the topic, and it's impossible to deny that it does seem to be kind of taking over the entire sub at times. So we've come up with what we hope will be an equitable solution for everyone.

Data Center Discussion Day will be Monday

What exactly does this mean?

  • News, studies, blogs, etc. on the dangers or benefits of data centers in contexts not specific to Abilene will be permitted as top-level posts only on Mondays. Other days of the week these posts will be removed, and you will be invited to repost them on the appropriate day. Feel free to discuss the subject within the existing posts whenever you like.
  • Items specific to Abilene - news about our local data centers, traffic, housing, situations that are actually Abilene-specific will still be allowed any time. This is the Abilene subreddit. We'd like it to focus on Abilene content where possible.
  • This is not an invitation to spam the sub on Mondays. If you've got multiple things you want to post on the topic, please try to combine them into one post where possible. A single person posting 5 similar things in a row may be considered spam, regardless of the day of the week.
  • Be civil. This should go without saying, but this situation has been devolving into claims of harassment by specific people on both sides, and looking at the comments being made the claims don't seem baseless. If you can't maintain a civil discourse on this or any topic, then we may have to ask you to leave the sub entirely.

Question Does anyone have any idea why all the traffic lights in and around downtown are blinking red all of a sudden?

I was driving out to refill my car at the Walmart by Hardin Simmons, but had to take a couple of detours because the roads I usually use to head that way were closed for maintenance, which led me straight into the downtown area.

I saw one of the lights blinking red, but didn’t think much of it because I noticed another street just ahead of me was also closed for maintenance.

I turned left where the main library used to be, and thats when I saw every single traffic light down that street was blinking red too.

As I drove, I glanced around to see that every single traffic light down every other street was blinking red.

It went all the way up to the light by the convention center.

I just want to know what exactly is going on here.

Entropy has taken its course

About 2.5 years ago I moved to Abilene, I then after about a year moved away for work. Now work is bringing me back to the ol A-Town. I guess what they say is true. This town is a bit of a black hole sucking you back in. That being said; why not make the most of it? My job has provided me so many opportunities. I’d like to make the most of those advantages. I think most of us can agree Abilene has potential however it feels it’s being squandered. If you agree please list some things you’d like to see come to Abilene.

Baseball/Sports cards shops?

I'm aware of Rick's. Looking for other dealers/store fronts in town. Walmart and Target have already been cleaned out.

My searches haven't turned up anything solid.

Demand a public hearing before the air gets worse

Local people, please join me in calling Rep. Stan Lambert and Sen. Charles Perry to demand a public hearing about TCEQ permit 182126, in which a Colorado company intends to add a "significant amount" of carbon monoxide, ammonia, and sulfuric acid mist to the air around Taylor County.

Stan Lambert: (512) 463-0718

email form: https://house.texas.gov/members/3225/email

Charles Perry: (512) 463-0128

email form: https://senate.texas.gov/memberform.php

Phone calls matter more than emails, because actual staff members will hear the concern in your voice and know that you are a real person who cares. Just asking for a public hearing at this point.

Moving here

Hey y’all I’m moving to the area from the east coast for work. I’ve been looking to try a place to rent. Mainly looking for a 1 bedroom since I’m by myself. I’ve tried calling places I seen listed on apartments.com but I’ve just been getting voicemail 😭. Any other websites or places you guys would recommend?

Question FanExpo

Is anyone from Abilene going to the FanExpo in Dallas, Tx in September? I've never been, but will be going by myself on the 12th. There's a huge panel that I'm excited to see.

What to expect?

Restraunts near by or do they have food vendors?

Dart transit system...never used, will be first time. My hotel will be at the Crown Plaza /Lovefield by IHG

Pretty proposal spots?

So in the next few months id like to propose to my girlfriend and I have all the plan except for where. We've had discussions over the years about how she wants to be asked and her only speculation was that itd be in a place that would look good in pictures. Does such a place exist? My first thought is the lake near the zoo infront of some trees with the water behind it.

I unfortunately am not much for sight seeing and am relatively new to Abilene (4-5 years). Does anyone have any good recommendations?

Haunted places in Abilene

The only place I know for sure is haunted is the old Swenson house. Are there any other places that have documented proof of a haunting? And I only want places in Abilene not surrounding small towns. Thanks

Rental market softening?

I’ve been seeing a lot of price drops for these landlords posting 3/2 homes for $2400. Seems that throughout the next few months things will get better. Is this happening or not happening?
