Gameathlon: Age of Mythology LAN (Athens, September 11-13)
Hey r/AgeofMythology,
For those who don't know me. I've been playing Age of Mythology since as long as I can remember. I got into competitive Age of Mythology when I was 14 and have never looked back since. I went from tournament competitor, to top finisher to tournament host and from the outside looking at other titles like Age of Empires 2, Starcraft 2, League of Legends ect. and seeing the crazy LANs they would throw I was always like... one day, one day AoM will get put in the spotlight.
Well, wait no longer. I've already put out an announcement video where you can see what the event is all about but let me just tell you a few things here.
For those unfamiliar with Gameathlon. It is Greece's largest gaming convention. We're talking 20,000+ attendees over a weekend, LAN party setups, live tournaments, cosplay and much more. It's been running for years and it is a proper event. Not just some small local thing.
This year it is running from September 11-13 at a literal Olympic Arena in Athens. The Tae Kwon Do Olympic Arena to be specific. The qualifiers will also be hosted online on my twitch channel starting in Late June/Early July
The reason I'm excited beyond belief is because Age of Mythology made a name for itself partly because of the Greek mythology, because of the connection to the rich history that Greece has and because it made a generation know about things like the Trojan war, Achilles, Odysses and many other ancient war heroes.
If you're in Europe or thinking about a trip to Athens in September, check in, this is real. I'll be there, Moose will be there and the highest profile Age of Mythology competitors will be there as well.
The more noise the AoM community makes about events like this, the more of them we may get so leave a comment, share the news and lets get hype.

Retold Learnings about the Egyptians after +- 100 games
1 - Eggy's main problem is definetly scouting. 100 Gold is a hefty price to pay on a slow moving, fragile, useless in combat scout that can be picked off by literally any stray soldier and even MU's. You simply don't have an option and have to play preventive of rushes if your opponent has a strong rush, going into classical, making a barracks and training a spear is way too slow and your only other option is scouting with your free Anubite or Sphinx, still late for the norm. In classical, free tower upgrades definetly mitigated this problem.
2 - Linked to the first problem, Priests are by far the worst hero in the game and it is straight up impossible to win a fight against a lot of Myth Units without Nephtys when they die so easily and cost so much precious gold.
3 - Your God Powers don't do a lot by themselves, you have to use them very conciously in order for them to be good.
4 - You will need some wood in Classical Age in the vast majority of games to research Watch Tower, Husbandry and/or the Sphynx upgrades, but overchopping is useless and you should only get what you need. You don't need slingers, forget that garbage (at least until Heroic).
5 - For Ra and Set, the most important thing to know is if you're gonna go Ptah - Sehkmet based on matchup (and map) at the start of the game or not and plan accordingly.
6 - Chariots are yout best friends and Camels are your enemies. With good micro, CA's win a lot of fights they probably shouldn't, but DO NOT trust Camels to win close fights against other cavalry, mix in spears or you WILL be disapointed.
7 - Upgraded Sphynx is your only good MU option in Classical, making Anubites or Wadjets will extremely rarely be a good investment of your limited favor.
8 - Both Tusks of Apedemak and Book of Thoth are priorities over Valley of Kings (imo) as they don't require Pharaoh duty, don't cost a liver in gold + 40 favor and Elephants are still slow to get going even with VoK, you will very probably need more than a Migdol to actually get your army going and only one of them can benefit from VoK.
9 - There's no need to rush in using your favor, as the 3 MU options you have in Mythic Age are quite good, specially Avenger with Crimson Linen.
10 - Scarabs are way better than they seen, getting your Siege Workshop and Ram of the West Wind is an absolute priority as Sehkmet, it's even worth to empower building and researching the technology as Set for a better timing.
11 - Don't rush for a second TC if it's risky or you don't have information. Make some army and a second monument (or even third) for economy instead of risking so much gold investment then grab your TC when it's safer.
12 - Wall yourself everywhere you can. Yes you are a coward and yes it is worth it.
13 - Make Axemen against Atlantean. They will pump amout destroyers to raid your buildings and Axemen is your only option against them
14 - If you don't play Set to it's limits and use every bonus you have, you will lose.
15 - Against a classical fighting Norse, you have to build all 3 types of human soldiers you have and micro your mind out of it, there's no other option
I think that's it, i hope this helps or intrigues someone enough to correct me!

Retold Campaign worth playing?
I played and completed the original age of mythology and titans campaign back when it came out. I tried replaying the original a couple of years ago but it was kind of janky and the AI gets weird on the longer maps. Been looking at the remaster and was wondering if it's worth playing? Is the AI stable for the enemy? Is it tough at all on higher difficulties?
edit: well you guys convinced me I'll keep a look out for a sale or lose patience and buy it tonight. Thanks for the replies!

Retold Blood Pact Ayotachli combo Too strong
The combo of using an ayotachli & blood pact is too good. There's often no way to stop it from killing a TC or fort because the unit has so much HP and damage. The fact that this unit it virtually unkillable makes it very un-interactive and makes the only counterplay scouting it in the middle of the map or picking a specific god/Myth unit. (ex frost/frost giant, use bolt)
Example at bottom of Ayotachli killing A citadel in front of an entire army. There is earth monster used but it's just demonstrative and normal opponents use their army when they do this.
Suggestion: Remove or significantly reduce the HP boost for the blood pact unit so you have an incentive/reward to focus the high dps unit down.
Alternatively could try to adjust this Gp so that it's better on Human units/Heroes and less effective on MU, but there is already an interesting dynamic of using it on army vs Eco if you aren't doing this cheese to kill TC.

Retold Are build orders from a year ago still up to date or did stuff change?
Haven't played for a while and while I really dislike copying strats and build orders from YouTube and instead prefer to come up with my own stuff, it doesn't feel viable in RTS.\
Atleast not in pvp

Funny question but is there a pacifist mode to Age of Mythology?
I.e. can I just farm and build and improve the economy without getting combat involved

Retold Mods for building more house?
Is there any mods for building more normal houses? I enjoy building cities across the map and it would be nice to build houses for cities and not just military bases.

Report Cheating Players
I want to report cheating players. Check the screenshots. No way they both can have all these god powers at the end. Itβs like fire all the time for like 10 minutes! And though I am f*** killing them. The first player is called PolarDeaths and the other is PowerOfDad.

Retold New Age of Mythology Retold Website for... well, pretty much everything.
Hey what's shakin everyone!
So for the past several months I've been working on this, and I'm finally at the point where I'd like to go ahead and finally announce the launch of Prostagma?
Things had initially begun as me just playing around with some of the game's internals and seeing how much raw data could be extracted, and eventually just snowballed to the point where I had created the skeleton of a real functioning website.
AoM has been one of my favorite games since even before TT, and after the release of Retold I made it a goal of mine to upgrade my status beyond n00b. But I found it pretty frustrating at the lack of consistent/reliable resources, beyond knowing some of the more popular content creators and following them on Twitch or YouTube.
I think we can all pretty much agree that aomstats is basically the GOAT, but there were certain small things I found mildly annoying βΒ like the inability to hide AI games, for example. The site also obviously focuses strictly on stats, so for Build Orders and other info you have to find somewhere else. The guys over at the DoD Clan did an absolutely amazing job of documenting and cataloging I think at one point over 100 different build orders, but that is essentially the extent of their site.
So once I had finally committed in my head that I was gonna do this, my goal was clear:
One site. For everything. And make it reliable.
With my background in Statistical Analyses and Machine Learning, I also wanted to see exactly how much data I could collect to provide users with a straight up, written in plain text answer to a lot of the burning questions I know we all have.
(e.g. IS HUITZLOPOCTLI ACTUALLY OP??!)
Building the site I really wanted to give it that native AoM feel, merging the old with the new, and I think you'll see that across the site.
But so what I think makes Prostagma cool and unique:
HOME
The homepage is really pretty straight forward, the top most card is reserved for the latest game news updates and/or major content creators currently streaming, and you can also view a quick snapshot of live activity and other players streaming. The background is actually an exaggerated version of our live activity map.
LOBBIES
The lobby browser is pretty straightforward. You have your standard list view, and I've also added in a much richer card view display. Here in the lobbies you can also view some cool stuff like win probability, with a clear interpretation like "Boit is heavily favored to win". A subsection of the lobbies page is the live activity monitor. Here you can see a breakdown of who's online, with a real map showing where everyone is playing from (shoutout Halo 3). We've been collecting data for weeks or months (who knows at this point) and here you can see whether AoM is busier than normal, or mostly dead. And yes, changes in the near future will expose more data so you can see things like when exactly is AoM the busiest? (It's exactly when you'd probably think β Sunday 17:00β20:00 GMT and 7:00β9:00pm GMT in general).
AGORA
One thing I missed personally about AoM Vanilla was the global chat where you could just kind of hangout. In Prostagma? I've added a similar live chat browser (The "Agora"). And just because I can, and because I think I had seen some DoD guys mention it in their Discord β I also added an exclusive 1800+ room. There's no cheating to get in. You'll just have to work your way up through the ranks. I'm also really not big on censorship, so the chat is largely unfiltered, but that doesn't mean that it isn't monitored or have rules. What say we just keep things clean, and not figure out what it takes to earn yourself a ban, eh?
BUILD ORDERS
There's lots of build orders, one way that I plan to keep the site up to date and useful is by building a Build Order Creator. I played around with a ton of ideas and this is the most optimal way to display all the nuances that come with writing out build orders, making them immediately easy to read and understand, and aesthetically pleasing. I believe it may still be currently gated, but eventually users will be able to add their own community submitted build orders for display on the site (pending approval of course). The BO creator makes it really easy to quickly create a build, and insert icons where preferred.
TOOLS & MORE
There was a handful of random ass shit that I felt worthwhile to document and share like "how do I change the color of my name?", you'll find that here.
I also added in an incredibly simplified Compendium and Tech Tree drawing from the best of Retold and Vanilla. Right now I know it probably doesn't give you all the hidden details of each tech or unit that you might be wanting to see, but rest assured, we've parsed that data directly from the game files and I'll be figuring out the best way to add it in here. Same with the Combat Simulator. I fully intend to make it much more detailed, so you can expect those updates in the coming days/weeks.
MAP OVERVIEWS
These also live under Tools, but it's one of the coolest and original things that we created and I think it really deserves special mention. On these pages you can view a FULL BREAKDOWN of maps. This includes an overhead aerial view, with resource totals, how they compare to other maps, exactly where you can find gold/food/wood and how much of it, as well as the amount of relics that can be found on each map, and an underrated metric - the map size (I don't know how many of you have noticed this, but Cloud Forest is fucking HUGE. It is literally 1.35x larger than almost all the other maps, and these types of details matter. You might now understand why raiding is so hard on this map).
STATS
And yes, finally βΒ the stats. Stats, stats, stats. We all want to know. I'll be transparent here and admit that the Stats are not fully implemented. Yes, I know I promised answers to those burning questions like Is Huitz OP'd? The answer is yes. But not by nearly the amount you probably think he is. I don't analyze RTS games for a living, but from what I can tell you from the data β is that overall the game actually is REALLY fairly balanced. The nuances really come down to relaying this information, and what it really means. For two nearly evenly matched players, if one player is Ra and one player is Huitz βΒ yes, Huitzlopochtli is gonna have the edge. But really not by that much. Skill is almost always going to be the deciding factor. So again, in the coming days and weeks, expect to see updates to these pages and how balance is shared/conveyed.
Basically right now a standard ELO only formula is proving to be roughly 65% accurate at predicting the match winner, which is the calculation that you'll see across the site. Eventually we will be working our ML balance stats into these figures to provide more accurate predictions.
REPLAYS
This was another one of the really big things that I wanted to implement, and with the help from Soup, jerb0t, and some other guys β you can now search for replays based on player strategies. If you want to find 1600+ players going full single TC aggro as Tezcatlipoca, you can now do this.
The bigger implication:
With strategies mapped to advanced replay match analyses, we will eventually be tying these to individual player profiles, and so again β in the coming days/weeks you can expect big changes as we begin to identify and label players by their play styles i.e. "Prefers aggressive early military", or "Prefers to Boom". One trick ponies β you're on notice. Your days are numbered. If all you do is spam Eagle Warriors, it's gonna be listed right there on your profile.
There are so many other really cool (I think) features that I just don't even have time to get around to, so I heavily encourage you guys to check it out and do some exploring. One such thing is Clans and a "Friend's/Following List". From here you can see exactly what your friends are up to. If they're in a match, you can quickly copy the match ID so you can hop in and observe it, and from the lobbies β I've even added a filter that allows you to view only games Friends/Followed players games. And yes, if noticed I keep saying Friends/Followed β that is because I have not quite found a safe and reliable method of syncing your in-game friends list. For now, you can add a player by viewing their profile. In the near future I'm also considering a method of sharing replays with other users (and yes obviously there will be a way to ignore messages from players you don't know).
I've also recently created a Discord if you'd like a way of getting in touch.
But so again, expect even more in the coming days and weeks. For now, enjoy the site, and let me know if you have any feedback. Your thoughts and concerns are always valued.
